Rebecca is a passionate Singer-Songwriter/Vocal coach/mentor /impressionist/photographer/creative junkie /self- development lover not a hater.
“I want to motivate and inspire others to follow their dreams…corny? Well, maybe but it’s true. So what’s motivating me?? I had a huge tumour removed summer 2016. However, despite not being able to walk for a few weeks, and feeling generally awful…. It has made me create and do what I love! It wasn’t an easy time but I won’t let fear dictate my life. I didn’t think ‘why me’, there are plenty of horrific issues people have to deal with…it’s not always smooth sailing. It’s true when you hear, ‘Life is short’, the crazy thing is, I am glad it happened…I appreciate life even more and try to practice gratitude everyday…It’s so easy to get caught up with the little things…and I do sometimes, but look at the bigger picture, will it matter in a year or two…we are all specks of dust…Also, thank you for all your support. It means a lot. I have suffered from anxiety from the past and self-confidence, (yeah hard to see now right) didn’t think I was ‘good, or worthy enough’ but I feel I have a new lease of life, don’t really care as much and want to show you guys what I have! : ) You are all awesome and without you, there would be no channel.

Interesting that you mentioned colours a lot because Marina has a condition called synesthesia: musical notes (as well as days of the week) are associated with colours to her.
She is about to release her fourth studio album, I can't wait. Her debut album, The Family Jewels is very deep and introspective. The second one, Electra Heart is built around a character and is about female archetypes. The third one, Froot, is the most reflective and most cohesive in sound. All of them are masterpieces in my opinion.
Her discography is awesome!
I'm not an expert, but as I understand it synesthesia isn't a condition so much as a natural phenomenon when one sense trigures another. It could express as F# feeling red, for example, but it also is why people describe colors as "warm" or "cold."
remplidefeux i've got it and i know people with it as well. for me, it's the "feeling" of a color (associated with numbers), but i know people who can visually see the colors associated with different things. i know someone who also tastes sound, so it's really different for everyone, especially because there isn't a whole lot about it in the medical world. it's basically just that senses are crossed. sound-color synesthesia are the most well known due to musicians and artists who use it to their advantage. for me, it is just a little quirk that happens but doesn't effet me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm so happy people stopped sleeping on Marina. She's such an unique artist. She's actually unique and different in a industry full of people trying to be "different / rebels" and ending up all being the same
If you are curious: the parts where she looks very girly and with the blond hair and heart on her cheek are from her album Electra Heart. Here she tells a story of the character Electra Heart (indicated by when she wears the cheek heart) that isn't happy with herself and takes on different personas (housewife, beauty queen, homewrecker, idle teen) to try to find who she is.
There is a lot of love and broken hearts involved, and the possible suicide of Electra Heart at the end.
It's such a sad and dark album, packaged in pop-y tunes and appearance. She's a real inspiration, been to 2 concerts of her. She's lovely, and an absolute genius (and you're absolutely amazing as well!!).

I appreciate your acceptance of her quirks/oddities; there's another vocal coach on here that's very stuck in her opinion of how a vocalist should sound and it makes it awkward to watch. Your references are on point as well (Kate Bush, e.g.)... I feel like you would jell with a singer like Marina as a vocal coach! Embracing and guiding the wild registers and "vocal references" vs. trying to buff out the oddities.
She's not always my taste but Marina is definitely underrated as a vocalist... with how she sings (really playing with her vocal tract from vowels to laryngeal adjustments) it could easily be a hot mess; but she is actually very musical about it and her consistency in live performances shows how much control she really has

Trust me, you WILL absolutely cry. I saw her in Birmingham in the UK back in May, I was crying during the show and days after the show. It is such an emotional experience. I am going to see her again in Wales because how can I not.

Fka Twigs, Lana Del Rey, Marina & Florence are literally the four horsemen of the gay apocalypse; mainly because these girls are not only friends but also a share a level of aesthetic / vocal level beyond the other pop girls. i think it's almost safe to say that marina could've been a main pop girl (alongside gaga, bey, rih, nicki, etc.) but chose to leave the scene shortly after realizing that fame isn't always sunshine & rainbows. if there's any good artist / band that go head to head with marina that's definitely melanie martinez, cruel youth (band) & lana del rey but we're not going to go down that lane because their artistic choices are so on par & also so different that it's almost a lane on it's own really.
if there's any artist i could let you react to that would be cruel youth! i think their debut +30mg would be great both reaction & how you're going to critique the band's lead vocalist's (which is teddy sinclair) vocals. please do it thank you!

Aurora, Hayley Kiyoko, Melanie, Allie X are all alternative pop girls, Marina isn't an alt-pop girl, she's a main pop girl who _had_ a shot at being as popular as Gaga but denied herself of being one because it wasn't her dream anymore.

girl i was agreeing with you until you said melanie was on par with the other girls... i used to listen to her for a while but then the concept grew tired for me... i think she definitely has potential to maybe become close to the level the other girls are on, but right now she just seems a little simple. and her lyrics aren't anywhere near the level marinas are.

Actually she really takes inspiration by Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Annie Lennox and of course Kate Bush. But she didn't know Kate Bush at first because she didn't listen much music when she was growing up. But then she became successful and everybody compares her to Kate and she discovers her music.
Marina is one of the best songwriters of this generation, such a pure and raw artist. She's gonna release her new album this year. Thank God. You should really listen to her albums especially Froot, since she wrote it all by herself and co produced it with just one guy.
Also her amazing debut The Family Jewels where she really show her potential, very eclectic and unique sounds in there. And Electra Heart which is an album more pop mainstream but with such a strong concept. Marina created a fictional chracter to show and explore the differents arquetypes of women.

I discovered her a bit after Froot. I started with Electra heart and kept listening from there.

Saw her live last fall. Genuinely one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. It was so beautiful and artistic, and she’s such a great performer. She’s also super “quirky” and humble, at one point she was sitting on some stairs and slipped and almost fell and then just made fun of herself. Later her dress ripped and so she just laughed and kept going. Her backup dancers were so talented and it was just overall a great experience! If you still haven’t yet (because I know this is an old video) I definitely recommend seeing her live!
I remember seeing her live, HONESTLY RAW TALENT. Every song she sang was as good as the recording if NOT better. Like such an experience 10/10 recommend seeing her live.

I really love Marina, interestingly Marina and the Diamonds isn't the name of her band, it's her stage name. Her last name is Diamandis, very similar to Diamond. So that became her stage name. However, recently she changed it to just Marina, so no more Marina and the Diamonds. You should listen to her performance of Baby by Clean Bandit featuring her. The original soundtrack is very beautiful and also features Luis Fonsi (the singer of Despacito) and the music video for it is stunning.
Tyler England, All of Clean Bandit's videos are ... STUNNING. That's where I first became aware of her, and have since been scouring her past work. I was gonna state that fact about her name, since I thought it was a band at first too, and most new people will. I saw a clip of her, saying ... that "Marina" was her name and the "Diamonds" refered to her fans. I can't wait to see what new material she puts out, but the ton of her older stuff will keep me busy for a while. Thanks, for taking the time to post good info on her.

My recommendations are Oh No! and Hollywood from The Family Jewels (her first album), Primadonna, Homewrecker, How to Be a Heartbreaker and Radioactive from Electra Heart, and then Froot, Blue, and Savages from FROOT. But by far Electra Heart is my favorite album.

I love Marina!! I'm surprised you hadn't listened to her before haha. Majestical fairy tale is true of her voice. Her songs are pretty sarcastic at times, sometimes very depressing, but I have never heard a song of hers I didn't like!! Her pop is my favorite kind tbh. Her vocal range is so exciting and I love listening to the differences between her live performances and her album releases.
Lovely video as always!! The comparisons you make of her voice to other styles, and to other singers was so interesting! And you can nail the sounds the singers are making which makes me so envious lol. I love Marina. I actually found her by looking for ridiculous and weird music videos years ago. Her MV for Robot popped up and I enjoyed the song so I looked more into her and have followed her since.
Her acoustic performance of Lies is one of my favorites from her.

The performance that just made my head explode was Marina and the Diamonds at Lollapalooza in Sao Paulo, 2016. The crowd was so excited it really ignited Marina and her band. She worked that stage like she owned it. Great sound and great photography as well. If's on youtube about an hour long. But you can skip to any point in the video and it will be great.

She's putting out a new album soon so you have perfect timing!! I love the way she experiments and manipulates her voice, there's so many cool details she puts into each song and it expresses so much emotion. It always makes me admire her courage to use her voice to put so much emotion out into the world for the public to see. I also always look forward to her live performances because she usually changes some things, puts a new spin on a phrase or note, and it's so exciting to see her give an alternate interpretation. I feel like she's physical embodiment of the fact that music and singing is an art form. It makes me so happy that by like the 3rd song you were like in love with her. Her honest and reflective lyrics really helped me get through high school, I connected to her lyrics and felt like I wasn't alone.
Also yeah! She has conversational bits in a lot of her songs, it's really neat!

I'm happy you're discovering one of my favorite artists. My favorite part of Marina other than her incredible voice is that a lot of her music sounds bubble gum pop but listen deeper and the lyrics are all woman power and so intelligent.
