- Shaun Martin, a solo jazz, gospel, and neo-soul artist and long-time member of the band Snarky Puppy passed away this week at the age of 45.
I've interacted with Shaun a few times over the years. Here’s a brief story and some encouragement to check out his solo records and everything he recorded with Snarky Puppy.
Album: 7Summers - 2015
Album: Focus - 2018

This video is not monetized out of respect for Shaun.
The end screen in this video has a typo in the dates. It should read 1978, not 1987.
I wish I could fix it, but that’s not how UA-cam works. 😢
Hi Josh. Thank you for this tribute to Shaun. Did you try adding an annotation to cover or comment the year number? I heard these annotations/ cards can be added after upload, but I may be mistaken
@@JoshWalshMusic thank you
@@JoshWalshMusic i 1st heard of him on UA-cam ( of all places) when he was doing a tutorial of one Kirk Franklin's songs. He's an incredible brother. Wish I would have met him. From your description of him, seems like like was a great man. Definitely learning some piano 🎹 from his videos. Thank you for giving him some flowers 💐
@@frederickweeksjr.1189 he played keys for Kirk Franklin. So that was a perfect tutorial.
@@JoshWalshMusic it was. .....a REAL musician.
I didn't realise Shaun had passed. I'm now super sad - going to call my wife right now and tell her how much I love her.
Shaun and I went to the same elementary school, Mark Twain in Dallas. He was three years behind me. Back then, the school offered piano lessons for whoever wanted to take them. When I heard that Shaun passed, I immediately remembered him as a little boy wearing his glasses with a little grin walking down the hallway headed to piano lessons. This hurts. Rest in heaven, Shaun. And, beautiful tribute.
Shaun was always such a kind soul. Rest in peace
That end video of him playing the rag time piano is what made me want to play piano, even his video of Hosanna... I listen to his music so often, its pure joy, love power and such a musicality. I've never had the chance to meet him but I'm so grateful that I have the chance to listen to his music. Feels good matching this, take care beautiful people
The end of Quartermaster is such a "Shaun" moment. Not really the vibe of Snarky Puppy in general, but I love that Michael gave him a chance to be his quirky self at the end of that session.
It's so wonderful to know and see how much he inspired people. Thank you so much for sharing, we miss him dearly
When I was young I listened to Kirk Franklin and saw the credits on Shaun Martin as a Church musician myself he inspired me to pursue great music for the Lord. He was a really big part of my sound and how I approach music for the ministry Absolute Legend.
FFS 45 is too young .... so0 sad ... thanks for celebrating his legacy ! And much comfort to his nearest and dearest ... .he touched many hearts with his music !
I saw mr Martin on a live gospel dvd recording of Kirk Franklin some couple of years ago ...
To this very day , i keep on watching that dvd , just to hear him play the background sounds and synthesizers....( There was a guy referred to as ' big Mike ' - he played the piano )
But mr Martin was absolutely , positively , 100 % , the main engine behind that awesome sound of Kirk Franklin on that night ...
He sounded AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!
Sad to hear he passed on so soon ...( just like ' big Mike ' who also passed on not long after that recording ) ...
Shaun Martin was a very humble guy who could appreciate the contribution of every musician ( based on what i have heard and seen on some recordings ) ...
A beast in his own right ..May he keep on evolving in the afterlive 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I also saw Shaun twice with Snarky Puppy, including the released Albert Hall concert. The crescendo to his solo on Sleeper had me on my feet, roaring for joy, tears rolling. I didn’t even remember getting to my feet. It was the most intense musical moment of my life, and I still tear up when I listen back to it, it was once-in-a-lifetime special. So sad to hear he’s passed, the world is a poorer place without him.
Me too, I saw him at the Albert Hall, the night they recorded the album live. He was awesome. 😎🎹
@@martynramsden it was an incredible night wasn’t it. I saw them in Brixton too, two of the best gigs I’ve been to!
He was such an incredible performer. Such kind words
Yeah, Shaun was a great guy and musician. I discovered him on UA-cam in 2014, since then I became fan of his playing, music, and humor. May his soul rest in peace!
He was an inspiration to us all... RIP, Shaun.
Shaun was a friend of mine. Miss him dearly. Thanks for your video. He's easily one of my favorite people. Never mind also being one of the greatest musicians ever. Rest easy Shaun.
Sorry my friend. Taken from us much too soon.
He was such an incredible person. What an incredible friend and performer. Thank you for your kind words
Quennel Haskins last week, now this. As a musician and a passionate lover of the art of it, I recognize the times and season we are in. Legacy.
Quennel was such a loss too!
Damn, that’s a shock. A beautiful musician and of course the Lingus moments will forever resonate on here on UA-cam. A sad loss of a great musician and human being.
Thanks for honoring Shaun and his amazing music legacy. Though I never met him, his music deeply inspired me being a pianist, producer and recording artist as well. RIL to this incredible musical gentle giant 🙏🏿
Man, born in '78 - so young to be gone!
What a sad shame I was literally learning one of his pieces just the other day ...a great loss to the world of music..R.I.P sir and thankyou for the music 🎶
Ouch. what a loss. seriously. thanks for this video, lovely tribute. be well.
One of the greats, he had such incredible energy. He will be missed and we are so lucky to be able to revisit the great music he was involved with
Thank you for this heartfelt tribute. I am lucky to have met and chatted to Shaun at the first GroundUp Music Festival in Miami in 2017. I was sitting on a step enjoying the vibe and Shaun sat on the step. I said hi and asked where I was from and when I told him I was from England and had come to Miami just for the festival he couldn’t believe it. We talked about how music is the universal language. I had a few ‘meaning of life’ conversations with some of my other musical heroes during the festival, but Shaun was so easy to talk to. As you say, he came across as a very genuine, humble human being.
This is so wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing. Shaun was such a kind, caring, genuine person and your story is such a testament to that
Oh man, I'm VERY sad! I didn't know this brotha left us so quick! Damn it! Make it worth it peeps! Don't waste time, let's go!!
Nooooo! Shaun is my hero! I am saddened to hear this terrible news! '7 Summers' It's an album that I love madly and that I listen to on my headphones when I'm running. Above all, I love the spirituality of 'Madiba' and the genius of the composition of the other songs. Thanks Shaun, rest in peace and play for the angels ❤❤😢😢
Shaun was such a wonderful talent I saw him play on a twin bill with John O’Leary two years ago. I didn’t know his music with Snarky Puppy and I really didn’t know his solo music. I know John’s music with his band La Lucha so I was excited to see him with another pianist. They played grand piano’s on stage together and solo. I haven’t forgotten that concert. I loved the blend they both brought to their playing. Sean played Jazz , R&B and Gospel while John played Jazz with a Classical influence. It was a wonderful evening of great piano music. God bless you Shaun RIP.
What an amazing story. Shaun was such a beautiful force both musically and personally. Rest in powerShaun Martin
Man this really sucks, I watched so many clips of him and he always seemed so full of energy. One of my favorite videos of him is at a jam session in Las Vegas where he's having fun playing with Justin Lee Schultz. He was an amazing musician and 45 is way too young...
That Vegas clip is incredible.
This is such a wonderful video of Shaun Martin. Very well done. He has touched so many people. And yes he was this kind and inspiring to everyone. I will miss my friend.
Thank you for this beautiful tribute to such a fantastic talent. Gone far too soon. Rest in peace Shaun 🙏🏾 ❤
Sadly I’ve never heard of Shaun, but I’m definitely enjoying his music. R.I.P. I will definitely listen to him now
This is a wonderful tribute. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the tribute. I will miss him ❤.May God comfort his family, friends and loved ones. Amen! ❤
I can't believe it.... We lost a very great musician and a very kind and funny guy I have the chance to meet in person when Snarky Puppy played in Paris. So sad new....
So glad he inspired you and so many others. I only met him filming backstage at a Kirk Franklin tour. He was so funny, humble and talented. R.I.P. Shaun!
Thank you for making this. I count myself lucky to have seen him live with Snarky Puppy a couple of times, he was a once in a generation creative talent. RIP
A nice tribute. Very sad time. He was so young.
Beautiful tribute to an amazing artist ..
I'm a Snarky Puppy fan and i'm shocked. Rest In Peace, Shaun Martin.
Typical of Shaun! Such a beautiful soul! Gone way too soon. Rest in the Highest Praise Shaun!!
Beautiful tribute to Shaun and legacy. Like you, I met him a few times but didn’t really know him. But that didn’t stop him from being friendly & warm in the moment. Definitely left us too soon. Thankfully his music and spirit live on thru all those he connected with in this world.
Shaun is just that. Thank you for posting this will share with his sister/cousin. I grew up in NYC. Moved to Dallas. I had to explain to me friends in nyc in Dallas Grammy winners shed and chill and jack each others sounds 😂 Gonna miss my guy Shuwhun
Big Shaun Martin fan, and a huge Snarky Puppy fan. Life’s short - go to the concert, eat the cookie, write the letter, say the words. That reaction Shaun had to Cory’s solo on Lingus also makes me smile every time. I’m 46. 45 seems way too young. I didn’t know Shaun personally but his playing, personality, and prowess on the keys will surely be missed.
R.I.P Shaun M, a giant in this music. Hugely respected by fellow artists and listeners, and a great guy...and thanks for this vid Josh. 💔
Thanks Peter.
I had not heard of Shaun or Snarky Puppy. I took your advice and listened to 7 Summers. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of some great music! It is so sad when such a talent and a kind hearted soul, leaves this earth so young. Beautiful tribute, Josh. 🙏🏼
Beautiful.
This one hit different
Rest In Paradise
Beautiful tribute! Rest in peace Shaun!
Great tribute. It was great to include his reaction in Lingus, as being a keyboard player myself, I can only imagine how I would have reacted in that moment, and a great nod of respect to Cory, despite Shaun also being such a monster player.
Thank You for Reporting this (Sad as it is) ... Im sad, but I will forever Lift him as ONE OF THE GREATS!
Thanks for posting this. RIP, Shaun Martin.
Seeing this video just now is how I found out that he died. Snarky Puppy is one of my favourite bands. I’ll never forget his fantastic music. May he rest in peace.
Que triste noticia, snarky Puppy fue una si no la banda de jazz moderno que me hizo admirar y amar el jazz, que lamentable noticia.
Darn, that’s a shock. Of course his Lingus moments will forever resonate here on UA-cam, as will his body of solo and other collaboration work. A sad loss of a beautiful musician and human being.
This was beautiful.
Shaun did something similar for me. What a great dude. I will miss him dearly. Aloha
I am so sad to hear this, Shaun was such a bright light, Godspeed my brother.
Thanks for making this clip. So sad news, far too young to pass. R.I.P Shaun.
thanks for making and posting this thoughtful tribute. RIP to a great human and a great musician, Shaun Martin. Condolences to all who knew him and his music.
WooooW!!!! May his soul rest in peace
What a tremendous loss.. he was a brilliant musician
I hate I found out about Shaun after his death! I have been listening to the jazz channel on Sirius radio for about 3 years and I have grown to love it. He was masterful on the keys, but what he did with Kirk Franklin is true soul food to me. I heard that New Orleans inspired song just yesterday and I imagined I was on bourbon street dancing in a second line the intensity in this song is sheer magic. Oh Shawn, you left a void that will not be duplicated. God bless and thank you for your works. I will be purchasing all of his solo projects on Apple Music to support the family. I also created a pandora channel called Shaun Martin Dallas’Finest on yesterday 12/31/24. I added snarky puppy, Norah jones, and Erykah Badu to the channel as well. Music is a love language. LLSM🙏🏽💚🎹🪗
Only caught some of his stuff later in life. A great loss...
Wow! I’m shocked seeing this video. I had no idea he passed. I’m so sorry to hear this.
Thank you for your tribute! Shaun was amazing and I had the pleasure of knowing him through church and for years he was Minister of Music at Friendship West Baptist Church. From Praise Team to the choir he always made sure we sounded good and were ready to go. His praise was for real!
Now, Shaun gone to soon but take you rest!
Rest in power! ❤️🙏🏽😢
How fortunate you are to work with him so closely.
@@JoshWalshMusic It was a blessing! He will truly be missed! I am still in shock by the news
Shaun was such an incredible person. It's so beautiful to hear of all the amazing things that he did in his life with music and without. Thank you so much for sharing these kind words
Thanks. Beautiful tribute.
This is awesome.. I got to meet him in Atx and we talked on the sidewalk like we’d been old friends seeing each other for the first time in years catching up..Take your rest
Extremely shocked hearing of his passing. RIP

Man… what a legend that will be so missed. I remember meeting him and he acted like he knew me for years. He gave me his number and told me to hit him up anytime. We would see each other in the city from time to time. He was a real personable human being so full of life and love. The musician community will forever remember and respect you. RIP my brother. ❤
