Coronavirus: plan to ease lockdown as UK "past peak" of pandemic - BBC News

- Boris Johnson has declared that the UK is past the peak of the coronavirus outbreak, and said that he will set out a comprehensive plan for gradually lifting the lockdown.
But his announcement came with a warning, that the country mustn't lose control and "risk a second spike" of the virus.
It was the first time the Prime Minister led the daily briefing since himself becoming ill with Covid-19. Among measures being considered to restart the economy are the reopening of schools and public transport.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg.

If he's worried about a second wave surely opening schools is the last thing youd want to do

Stay Safe lol
This is more for those children whos parents work in nhs to give parents room to work and allow kids a return to normality
They are only looking at the startup plan for schools , they don’t want to risk anymore lives! They will open schools when they are sure that it won’t risk more lives. Also schools won’t ever be the same, year groups will go in only on certain days with high hygiene policies! They are only looking at the plan to get the schools to open, schools will probably only for years 7-10 open in late June! But everything can change
Schools should be at the end of the list to reopen.

We haven't even had a proper lockdown like Spain had.
Now they have fewer than 200 deaths a day.
Keep schools closed, as a teacher it's impossible to control social distancing even when a few kids are in.
Do the government really care about it's citizens.....NO!
@Albert Pike Duh. Since when did any government care about the _people_ ???

Opening schools now after what the country has been through is just madness. How are you gonna social distance? Ppe for all staff? Vulnerable staff? Are another few months really gonna make any difference to the children's education? Better to be safe than sorry and look forward to a safer return in September
with schools closed nobody can work..... they want people back in work so they dont have pay out
@@carlabreedon5841 The government are under pressure to open school , if school remain closed parents can't return to work, I'm a key worker at a school we should have had a lot more children come in to school but they have not turned up ,but parents have ask if there children can come in but are not not key workers , but no me matter how they try it will be impossible to social distance especially in the playground children don't understand especially younger ones .
The information about the properties of COVID-19 and its infection and death figures have been so inconsistent, contradictory and sometimes nonsensical that I think many people have chosen exactly that attitude, _"better to be safe than sorry"._ Few of us are virologists. Therefore, trust, plausibility and instinct are all that we have.
@Wuotans Krieger I did not say they should open schools I don't where you live but the school I work more then half the pupils come from one parent family's in some homes you need two wages coming in not everyone earns a good wage most key worker don't but when children do go back to school it will be hard to tell them they can't go to the park or out with friends especially teenagers .
Couldn't agree with you more!
Opening schools, I’m a school teacher in Beijing and only this week our eldest students returned under very strict conditions. Uk is nowhere near ready to open. Schools would a Petri dish for the virus.
Children can't pass the virus onto adults, this is accepted now.
Jeremy Fielding I’m not sure if that has been scientifically confirmed or not. However, schools do not operate without adults. Adults can pass on the virus to children, who then in turn can pass it on to anyone else they come into contact with. Opening schools back up is far more difficult to do safely than with just a politician sound bite.
Jeremy Fielding people even can give virus to cat. How children cannot transmit virus to adults?
@@jeremyfielding2333 litterally fiction.
1.5 million die every year from motor vehicle collisions never once had a lock down
I recommend schools don't open until September because if they open earlier the virus might spread
I agree with you
Wise words 👍🇬🇧 I miss my little girl but it is absolutely the right thing to do. The more individuals who have the common sense to follow the instructions given by the best and most experienced the greater the chances we can have a sense of normality by Christmas. 👍
Kaleb Tyacke I disagree I don’t think schools should even be open until next September
Agreed but I guess it's no our choice..
Especially nurseries as children that young wouldn't understand social distancing and children that young tend to touch things then put their fingers in their mouths.
On a table showing coronavirus cases numbers, the UK has moved up to fourth place.
Almost into the Bronze Medal position.
Already 3rd place the UK reached it is about 2nd place race.
@@UldisCrystal I am taking the numbers from the Roylab Stats page on UA-cam.
The UK is definitely heading into the top 3 but America are streets ahead and will, as usual, produce numbers that are bigger than everyone else.
I think we take gold for deaths per 100 000 of population
Eddie - We're ahead of you on the scoreboard of dead bodies per capita. The US population is 5 times greater than the UK. We're gonna win this world cup game of death with less bodies.
The borders are still open. What did you expect?
Re-opening schools boris is going down the wrong route, in my school there are 1,300 people going everyday which is very social, kids coming from different areas which come to school and socialise with other kids which go back home to there elderly parents, grand parents and siblings (younger and older).
Oooo...I'm so scared!!! 🤣
It is amazing how fast everyone online have become epidemiologists. Modelling is more complex then just considering the number of people in an area, so can we just allow the scientists to make their decisions. I trust the expert epidemiologist more then UA-cam or twitter.

In no way can we suddenly lift the lockdown right now and ease all restrictions and see everything returning as normal on Monday morning. We have to be prepared to be extremely patient and be very cautious right now. Johnson delayed lockdown and implemented social distancing ridiculously late. And now in last Thursday's briefing Johnson jumped rhe gun suggesting that we've got it more under control than we really have. Introducing the lockdown and putting in restrictions far too late meant that the R rate of transmission here in the UK was not going to fall anywhere near as quickly as other countries who locked down sooner and applied it far more strictly than the UK. That means we will remain in lockdown with social distancing in place here for a lot longer than all these other countries have.
6201 cases today is the 2nd highest daily count for UK.

I’ve been incredibly impressed by Boris during this crisis despite voting Labour, but I’m sorry this HEAVILY feels like a catastrophic mistake, they say the peak is over but we’re still getting 600+ deaths per day! And opening schools means sending high risk and less disciplined (because they are children!!!) individuals into constant contact and proximity with one another. Just a few children with the disease and it will spread horribly fast. I know this is financially crippling and emotionally draining for everyone, trust me I’m feeling the effects as well, but it just feels far too quick...
Though those numbers will be the conclusion of those who got hospitalised maybe up to 2 weeks ago . I think it depends more on new cases .
Remember when it was just 4 deaths, i miss my family
If you open school's what about the vurable kid's.
Keep them off and let the healthy ones go back.
Kids are the least vulnerable to the virus. They're most likely to get the virus, have no symptoms and recover quickly
Steph yes but you forgot to mention that they're the quickest to spread it to their vulnerable parents and grandparents, then we will have a catastrophe on our hands. Yes maybe the government don't have enough deaths so let's just send our innocent young kids back to school early so they can infect all the vulnerable adults and kill them. How about that eh?
Scouse Mouse lol that statement does not hold water. With what's going on around us, no sane parent would want to put their kids in harms way. I know I wouldn't. They can open the schools as early as they want, but if I had young kids they would not step their feet in any school. I couldn't live with myself if something bad happened to them. And please for the record, don't believe everything the government says. Something is not adding up and the public are not stupid to not realise that

I think schools should be last or one of the last things to re open. Kids will be vulnerable and schools like my secondary school for example are very crowded places. Kids will spread illness easily and take it home without realising. If they are so worried about there being a second wave then opening schools should be at the end of the list of things to re open
schools were the last place to go on lockdown... they may have been mentioned first but many jobs had already said that staff could work from home which allowed schools to be closed.... so in reverse they will have to go back first to allow jobs to go back to normal, no way around it.

It would be utter madness to ease all restrictions any time soon. Surely you don't want to risk death to yourself, your family and friends from a still rampant virus.
Travelling to and from work in an overcrowded commuter train carriage with the virus still at large is not worth the risk, surely.
@@dvidclapperton The destruction of the economy will be far more detrimental long term than this virus. If you're OK with saddling future generations with vast levels of debt then that's fine.
@Jane Samaldi
No other country (apsrt from ourselves and probably the US and is lifting all restrictions this soon. They. are all easing restrictions a bit at a time.
Australia are maintaining their distancing rules and restricting travel to no more than 50km from home plus only be out with one other person in the first phase of them easing their restrictions. Yet doing such a thing is not good enough to do here in the UK that we must do the full monty of lifting all restrictions by next Monday.
Who on earth wsnts to risk death from a still rempant coronavirus by travelling to and from work on overcrowded trains. I'm not saying the lockdown must stay 100% as it is until a vaccine ihas been develooed, but we have to surely ease it s bit at a time and monitor things like most other countries the rest of the world are doing. Yeah, but there are a lot of thickos about
I know it's a hard pill but the UK can't afford to pay furlough indefinitely. The lockdown can't be permanent not just because of this but because peoples willingness to cooperate is also limited.
Deaths may still be relatively high but deaths lag around 10 - 14 days behind infection. If the plan is schools open in 3 weeks but face coverings are required I'd be fairly confident.
Just showing some progress will give people hope which ideally would mean they continue to be careful rather than giving up.
@@goa139 I was simply pointing out that he is calling people 'foolish' for wanting to lift the lockdown while making an assertion for which he has no evidence for. It is slightly hypocritical.
the real tragedy is those people who have been completely forsaken by the NHS. Suffering from cancer or bleeding out of your arse? Nah you have to wait 12 weeks to even think about being seen by a doctor, even though there are thousands of empty beds. Who is the NHS for if it ignores all but a few thousand OAP's?
it only cost 9 US dollar for one test in some hospital in China now, the UK government shall put into more tests for the people live in high risk area. the most important things is that all the people have to wear face mask when they are in public area. Johnson should wear mask in public, for many people from the world will follow his behavers.
So you say what we're doing is working? Hmm... better stop doing it then...
Extend the lockdown till first week of June?
No can do. People need to work. At that point most of europe would have partially reopened
Yeah we still get 800 dead per day and 6,000+ cases per day. If they lift the lockdown too soon that’s just reckless.
@@anniemose4977 we actually get around 400 dead in hospital and the rest from care homes. Care homes deaths rose during lockdown and it seems clear that the spread there isnt really affected by lockdown. What you have is residents and workers. Really they need ppe and testing.

It's a good sign. Weve upped testing. And less of those people are showing any serious signs enough hat they're dying. It means heyre recovering. And were catching the asymptomatic spreaders. Really not a bad sign at all
@@totally_a_spy That testing is up is good but in Germany we were on this level for the last 3 weeks.
And the number of new cases dropped despite the increase in testing resulted in the UK a rise in the number of new cases this shows it isn't over the top jet.
@@paxundpeace9970 germany has handles this better than us. Teatsin ghas been up for weeks with them. They've been doing half a million a day from what I've read. And they started this earlier so they watched that fall. We only upped testing his week. Were at he initial high and were not sure if that's an increase or decrease from earlier weeks. I'd guess we presume a decrease along with fall in death rates. But cant be too sure. We'd have to extend things for a couple more weeks to be sure. But people are getting sick of lockdown and its clear we should have been doing this during lockdown not now when things are being eased
@@totally_a_spy More then Half a million a week since early april and just 5.5% of them were positive in the last week. The capacity is 900,000 tests per week.

While the UK has had tested 9 per 1000 people Germany has had tested already more then 33 per 1000 people.
@@paxundpeace9970 I'm aware. That's why I'm saying the two situations are different. For us more people tetsing positive is a good sign because they were always there, they just weren't being tested. Now they can quarantine. And we can figure out how many get it and are recovering

Worldometer is telling a different story for the UK. Do not let the gov open to soon..........

Good decision . The people un UK should be patient on it
If this started from a small handful of cases in the uk,how will it not begin to spread again if lockdown is lifted with more than a handful of people infected.
Why open schools again, start with smaller groups and then schools should be the last - what's the point when there's only a few months left till summer holidays?

Hi arifali wood like be friends with me
I bet they will immediately bring it back since this is a very bad idea like 674 deaths in a day that’s not low amount that is VERY high
The scientist that advised Johnson to lock down the UK has now resigned. Now he won't be there at the nriefings any longer, and as Johnson and Cummings never wanted to lock down at all, it's inevitable that Johnson will announce on Sunday that the UK will return per normal Monday morning as per pre lockdown. But it will be a catastrophic mistake. We would never have remained below 20,000 deaths maintaining the herd immunity throughout, in fact we would have seen a 6 figure uk death toll by now. We should have locked down much sooner. The mistake was not locking down, but locking down so late after too many people got infected and it developed in their bodies far too much to save a lot more people's lives.
Why doesn't the gov temporarily employ people whom need to go back to work to feed their families in farms, NHS, police, grocery shops, delivery etc. Places where they can enforce H&S standards more easily rather than the 'guidelines' with these private businesses and also ensure these essential places are well staffed in case we have a second wave? Also surprised we haven't come up with a temporary pass system for people going out to beaches parks etc as they are packed atm...it's disgusting. People have/are DYING or seriously ill. If you have a garden use that to work out or enjoy the sun. If you are holed up in an apartment with 3 kids then I think you should be able to get a pass to go out somewhere spacious if needed. But unless absolutely necessary for your mental health/wellbeing people should only be going out to work...we don't even know if this is seasonal or if there will be a cure at all! Let's learn more about it over time before we give everything the green light. 👍

She interestingly said '674' deaths linked to coronavirus, not 674 caused by coronavirus. I'd like to know what percentage of people actually died of coronavirus with no co-morbidity. Plus why were care home deaths not included in the death-toll originally. There is so much inconsistency!
I felt for that cancer patient with 3 children. His life is important too. There are other deadly conditions which are being overlooked. I think this lockdown could have been better handled.
I'm asking the same questions. If we could know the number who dies with bo underlying health issues, then we know the risk for the average person. And we need to know how many recovered. Then people would find it easier to send kids to school and get back to work. They're giving us half information so we cant form our own minds up on the risk and if lockdown makes sense
@@totally_a_spy Yes I fear the same... Plus we can't be naive about this. There are many to take advantage of this public health emergency, especially while people are confined to their homes. We must take a critical look as to how long the Coronavirus Act should be in force.
I feel that the government has not done sufficiently to prevent / minimize the spread of this disease. The government introduced the lockdown too late. There was sufficient time in January to buy PPE for hardworking NHS frontline workers. High rate of fatalities in UK could have been prevented.
