I wouldn’t beat yourself up about the lake freezing and taking the whole thing too lightly. I’m sure I would have done the same thing. You had an unexpected scenario, you adapted to you situation in a safe way and came out of it. To me that’s partly one of the thrills of being outside and in nature. Top job fella! 10/10 for not going into a tail spin and just getting on with the job that needed to be done. Happy Christmas!
Thanks Craig!! I never thought people would understand it the way you have but nobody has really given me grief over it. I love the outdoor community. Thanks for watching it and weighing in!
You sound so defeated! What an adventure Mark...you sorted through what you had to do and DID IT!! Great idea about the pizza dip (smellavision needed though) ...the glass door on the stove is unreal. Also, love that you brought a real lantern too. Another great Backcountry Paddler episode in the books! Cheers Colleen and Jonny
Just couldn’t resist another Backcountry Paddler film. What an amazing experience Mark. Yes I realise the lake had frozen over, and you had to haul all the gear back to the car but look on the positive side. The tent looked amazing as did the wood burning stove not to mention the food which also looked good (not as good as that steak though). Your making such wonderful films which you can look back on when you get to my age (74), and can relive these adventures. I wish I had been able to record such things in 4K. Brilliant film once again Mark FIVE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wow! That was wild for sure. I’m surprised the pond froze as well! Definitely brought a new element to the video. Full on survival mode activated lol glad you made it out safely!
So right! I haven't lived many of the things I'm out doing before doing them. But now I'm better for it. The lessons I learn the hard way are ways the ones I never forget too. Cheers!👍
Respect brother, adventure begins when shit goes wrong! LOVE IT! I know the feeling though, it's humbling and you feel pretty silly, but you overcame it and you're stronger for it bro!
Great video Mark! Enjoyed it and had a good laugh. Yes, the pond can freeze over. A few things to note, it's small, shallow, and no current. So with below zero temps (C), it can easily freeze over night. If you were on a big deep lake, likely only the edges would have froze. That's why with late season trips, I also use a Royalex canoe to break through the ice. Most importantly with late season trips and freezing temps, think about an exit plan on land if the water freezes. You were lucky. And also consider snowfall. If it was a lot, you could also get stuck in there with your vehicle. So also consider a communication device. Otherwise great trip and learning opportunity. 🙌 Loved the pizza dip! Would definitely try it. Cheers Ps. You're definitely a UA-camr. And a good one at that. Don't be so hard on yourself. We all have to start somewhere. We may not be superstars, but we enjoy what we do and love sharing it. Keep it up! 👊
Thanks David! Truth is I'm still quite raw to doing all of this outdoor stuff! I didn't grow up doing it and I basically do everything alone so I'm bound to make mistakes, but I'm also cool with it. I definitely didn't realize a whole pond could freeze like that overnight but i can look back and laugh now! 😂 I take your words to heart so thanks for watching and checking in with me my friend!
Awesome beautiful spot ... The pizza dip looked so good made me hungry. Wow that ice storm was intense... It looked beautiful though. I'm glad you made it out even by having to make several trips.
DUDE!! I've been waiting for a video from you brother! Nice to see you out and well!! I'm gonna try hot tenting with a stove. I've just done so with a mr buddy! Awesome video brother loved it! Was this public land you were on? I think we are somewhat in the same area. I'm trying to learn how to live that canoe trip life haha! What an adventure! Cheers! and thanks for the censorship I watch with my little ones :)
Definitely get yourself a stove..it's so nice to cook on and you can't beat having a fire inside your tent at night! That said, I actually want to try an overnighter in a 3 season tent with a Mr. Buddy heater. That or a car camping overnighter with one, just to try it out. This was on state forest land. Oh and I promise I won't be swearing in many videos, I'd like to not do it at all, but that moment was real. 👍
Great idea on the pizza. I love your videos, keep em coming! Way to adapt and overcome on the freezing of the pond. I think it's a great reminder to everyone to be extra prepared. Thanks for putting these together!
Dude...............I long for adventure in these videos. I love a little danger as opposed to a solo overnighter with a a meal. You did nothing wrong, but you handled the struggle like a champ. That's what I'm talkin' about. We don't need you to have all the perfect gear.....we just want to ride along with you!!
Thanks Scott!!! I was really hesitant to post this one because it isn't like the norm. I wish I had been able to film more of the struggle in the way out but my GoPro had broken. I hope to not face adversity on EVERY trip but I'll be more apt to film it going forward!
Great video. The intro was top notch. I love all of the interesting camera angles and audio overlaps. One of my first winter hiking tips is water freezes! Great adventure. Love that stove, better than the other model? I like that it doubles as a place to make food and boil water.
Love the stove! Most of the ones I have used/seen have no window! Super plus benefit! Looks sturdy too! Waiting anxiously for my Swift!!!!! The best way to learn is through mistakes. Glad you were safe and dry.
Gotta be the biggest window I've seen on one yet. Makes for nice ambience in the tent! I'm excited for you to get your Swift. Give me some details on what options you chose!
I loved the intro to your video... I love your swift! I'm trying to get my hands on one of those... I love your content too.. I'm a UA-camr from Northwest Washington. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Stay safe out there, Brotha!
Thanks so much! The Swifts are really good boats I have no complaints. They do deliver all over the U.S. just as an FYI. I'll check out your channel too! 👍
Awesome! Justin is a great dude. And you're absolutely right on that adventure part. What's funny is I'm literally just about to put his video on now, I haven't seen it yet! 😆
We don't have snow either!! I had to drive a few hours to find it that day. I'm jealous of everyone else out playing in it! Haha. I picked up a Luxe Miniprak XL to try out next.
Wife and I were watching Jeopardy last night and I got the question right. The answer was Magellan. 😂 must be in my blood or something! Lol Let's go winter camp. I've got 2 stoves, 2 tents!
Wow, I am really shocked at how fast that pond froze! I would have expected it to start with a thinner layer over night that you could have pushed through; not a think hard covering! Live and learn. I will be even more worried about my late fall trips now; glad to be forewarned thought. Your new stove is beautiful! Nothing like the slow of the fire to add to the warmth of the heat alone. Good on you for making the video and sharing it despite the challenges; that's real life - it doesn't always work out!
I would say " I'd do it all again just for the pizza dip," but I could totally just make that at home in minutes! 🤣 definitely stumbled on a good and easy camp meal!
@@BackcountryPaddler ahahah it's true to scale right??? I've been good buddy had a great humbling experience on my last trip managed to wrap my canoe on a tree and fall into the cold winter water! As we said, these tend to be the best adventures!
Came here at your recommendation! That snow coating the surface was the catalyst to the quick freeze. There was probably a heavy snowfall at one point. So, how thick was it? Might have been able to ice-breaker through it, but that canoe looks a little too nice to be doing that.
Loved the video man. Can’t be too hard on yourself. Like we discussed the other day.. I almost put myself in the same situation (but on an ISLAND!) Glad you were able to get out of there well enough, despite a little bit of heartache. Pizza dip looked excellent. I’m sitting here watching you eat it and I’m like, “aww man I want some of that...” and you’re like “you know you want some of this..” lol cheers man. Mother Nature likes to throw curve balls. This is a trip you’ll remember. Little bit of that type 2 fun!
We're both better for it now! Everything is a learning experience that's for sure!! I'm also certainly no longer afraid to make mistakes now that I see people are receptive to it and encouraging about it! Keep getting out there TK 🤘
Pizza dip looked great! Really nice tent and woodstove setup. That was a bummer about the pond freezing up, must have been pretty shallow water. We opted out of a trip last month because of a turn in the weather, and we don't have dry suits yet. When the water is that close to freezing it doesn't take long to succumb to hypothermia if something goes wrong. Nice video, thanks for sharing. Now the long wait for spring paddling. Safe travels!
That's why I didn't want to attempt to break through it with the canoe either. Not worth the risk of getting stuck in water where Hypothermia could set in quickly. I'm excited for Spring to get back out on the water again! And I'm glad to hear you made a good decision and didn't risk it. 👍
Don't feel too bad. When I was a kid I decided to go winter camping. Hauled all my gear on an old sled. Easy going and fairly mild weather. Too mild. Overnight all the snow melted. I was in the woods with a sled full of gear. Pulled it home thru the mud.
Ugh yeah that doesn't sound fun pulling a sled through the mud!! I plan on doing my next winter camp with a pulk sled and this isn't something I really thought about... glad you commented Steve!
Haha true and true. It would have been worse had I not been able to carry everything out. I was sore for a few days and broke some gear, ripped my jacket etc. They're just things though! Thanks for watching it bud.
great video! Hearing those wolves was wild!sucks about the pond freezing up on you ! At least you weren't to far from your truck! Count that as a small blessing and a memory you won't soon forget! Seems like the hard stuff always leaves a lasting impression!
You couldn't be more right Brian! I won't forget it because of what happened and the struggle!! They were just coyotes not wolves though or I would've made a bigger deal of it. 😆
This is awesome man! Just found your channel channel! I live in the Syracuse area and planning some truck camping up to the ADKs as we speak. Solid video 👌
Syracuse, nice! Where are you going to truck camp in ADK? I'm buying a Jeep and may get into that soon... We're so lucky to be in driving distance of the Adirondacks. I've got a couple videos there. Glad you found the channel! Mark
@@BackcountryPaddler That’s awesome! Looking forward to those videos once you get your Jeep. Yes, we are very fortunate to live so close! Not exactly sure where I’m going to truck camp yet. In the process of figuring that out now.
Man, you put a ton of work into producing and editing this presentation. I'm amazed and very impressed. Not a camper, but you sure know how to sell it.
scary to see the frozen pond but it looked beautiful and silent. I would have not thought about that pond freezing overnight that fast. well I learned from you for my next winter adventure.
That was my hope that other would see this and know it's possible!! You and me both will be more cautious for it next time! Thanks for watching Christian!!
Good going, Mark. "Adapt and Overcome". Thumbs up on the pizza dip. Did you consider taking the canoe back across the pond and breaking ice with the paddle. I can't tell how thick the ice was, but it looked thin. In any case, you got yourself out of a pickle in good spirits.
Haha believe me when I say I wanted to and tried, but it was thick enough to not risk it. I was out there alone and if something happened and I went in it would be bad news... so I decided to take the difficult but safe route. 🙂 that pizza dip was good thanks for the reminder I need to make that again soon. So simple but so good!!!
I'm so happy to see people appreciating the honesty!! I was not expecting it so much. It makes me really excited to keep filming and just being myself. I'll keep telling it and filming it as it is, and if I make mistakes... so be it!
The beer jinxed you. Next time you go camping in the late fall bring margarita mix lol A couple of quotes for you… “But did you die?” “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” “You cook good rabbit pilgrim” 😆 Thanks for another great video
That was rough. Nice setup, cool camp. The Weather Channel APP on your phone might help understanding the conditions you’re getting into. I’m all over the weather with several sources for my snowmobile info 😊❤️🇺🇸❄️☃️🛷🔥⛺️🌄
Wow. No, I would not have thought the pond would freeze so completely overnight… maybe a thin skim that you could hack or push through, but not so thick. What a ‘surprise’ . Good for you for keeping it cool -“It is what it is so now how am I gonna approach getting myself out” . I appreciate that. I’ll keep watching . I like your humble, friendly approach to UA-cam. Just one camper sharing stories with other campers. And about that pizza , how was cleanup on the pan?
Thank you Vicki, you don't know how nice that is to hear! I don't know why that pan is so non-stick but it is.. hardly any cleanup at all, it all comes off clean. Just a standard bread pan from Walmart too.
the more gear struggle is real with some of their stuff.... great video man!! love waking up to a winter wonderland - but I guess you could say you were lucky to be ABLE to walk it out that easily and not have been somewhere more remote. all the best to you from the Mountain Time zone!!!
Haha yes definitely better than being much further out into the backcountry for sure. I would've never done this on a bigger or more remote lake, especially without a dry suit. Hey at least I'll remember this one! 😆
I had something similar happen to me in the Adirondacks by Moose River plains when I was deer hunting many many years ago. Bright and sunny 70’s in the daytime. When I got up 20’s and snow covered. Coffee with twigs never tasted so good 😀
Really enjoy your videos, and I know that feeling.. Not with freezing but with getting my truck bogged down.. Too late on to do anything but portage in to the lake and make three paddles across to take in gear in the dark.. In a gale.. Shit happens fast man, but you don't let it get to ya.. Great stuff, love your canoe too btw!
It makes me really glad to share a video like this because it's relatable in that people have gone camping and had mishaps happen, such as yours. That sounds like it was a hell of a time...! I appreciate the kind words Joe!!
Hey Mark! Nice to see your tenting upgrades!! I have been looking at the hammock hot tent and the stove with the oven from Pomoly. They look like the best stuff out there. Glad you made it out without much trouble. Drysuits are a must if you are going to be paddling in the extreme shoulder seasons, I know from experience, ask sometime when we run into each other.
Totally agree! If I thought there was more risk I would have just stayed home seeing as I don't have a dry suit. Got a little extra exercise that's all. 💪🤣 I'm impressed with the quality from Pomoly. Top notch gear! The one with the oven would be awesome for camp cooking!!
@@BackcountryPaddler another thing that I learned was that not all dry bags are created equal! Some do not hold up when submerged! The best ones are ones with zip-lock security and the Blue Barrels are the ultimate for dry storage!
Hope this doesn't sound snarky because it's not intended to be that but this is why we call it experiential education. The best way to learn things is through experience. Unfortunately, not every experience would be considered a "positive" one but typically, they're the ones you learn the most from. I'm sure that will be true for you based on this trip. That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.
Not snarky at all. The best way to learn is through experience. I'm not very experienced in the outdoors yet (grew up in the suburbs, never camped as a kid) but I'm learning as I go. I'll be better prepared for the next one! And maybe someone else will be too from watching it. 👍
You are a You Tuber and just made another great video. Your dinner dish looks delicious but boy would the acid reflux kill me the rest of the night. Looks like you went to the school of hard knocks trying to get out of there. Luckily it was just a small pond and you want miles into a remote location. Chalk it up as a learning experience.
I had a tent with pole in the middle. It was ok for a while but that pole got old. Didn't like it. Why don't any of these hot tents have a floor? Is it because of the stove?
I get ya about the center pole, I'm not big on that either. I prefer a free standing tent with a floor. Your right, they either are floorless or have a cutout for the stove. I use a big tarp as sort of a floor but it's not the same.
"Winter couldn't come fast enough..." Well, that comment looks different the next moring... 😂 Loving the conoe trips and the hot tent vids. We have a similar style of trips. Now I have to add the Adirondacks into canoe trip possibilities rather than just the backpacking that has already hit my radar. Thanks for introducing that option... Just curious... What made you change the hot tent setup?
😂😂 that was ironic now that you pointed it out!! Canoe tripping in ADK is the most addicting thing there is. You'll love it!! Let me know if I can help in any way. As for the hot tent, I needed a bigger tent. The Lux Hexpeak I had was incredibly small. Back to ADK.. got anything lined up for next year?
@@BackcountryPaddler So far I've got a week in the Wind River Range in Wyoming and a week in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on the books. I'm also planning a hot tent trip in Jan or Feb... Maybe in northern Michigan. I'm also looking to add at least 2 other trips sprinkled in between somewhere... Maybe an ADK trip would fit well in the plans...
Another lesson learned after the fact! I'll be wiser for it next time and backpack in rather than canoe at this time of year if the pond or lake has a possibility of freezing!
I live on a small lake and yeah, it can freeze up pretty fast if it’s calm and cold. I am curious if you tried to break it at all and how thick it was. Many times it won’t be very thick the first night, but that’s easy to say from my warm easy chair. Way to rally and take the lumps. I will definitely try the pizza dip on my next paddle! Cheers.
I tested it with my paddle and felt it was too thick to risk trying to get across and possibly getting stuck. Just wasn't worth the risk with being alone in my opinion. The pizza dip couldn't have been easier, give er a try and let me know how it was!
I have never used a barrel but have heard good things about them. I do like my waterproof dry bags. They're water tight, light and keep everything nice and dry. I use both an EarthPak and a SealLine.
That was a stressful way to start the day. How many miles were the 10 trips? I need to start a cookbook of ideas from youtube. Pizza dip looked simple and awesome.
Not sure how many miles but it didn't end up being too ridiculously far. The pizza dip is definitely a quick easy trip food. The queso dip I made in the Adirondacks was even better. 👍
Out of curiosity do you have a dry suit or anything? My thinking was that it wasn't worth the risk to get back into that water and try to break my way across. It was also thicker than I imagined. Especially right near camp.
@@BackcountryPaddler no dry suit. I’ve broke through thinner ice with rocks and a limbed pole but I’ve never gotten in. If it’s too thick for a good size rock to break through you’ll have to bush wack out like you did though.
A part of me regrets not attempting it, but being alone I probably did the right thing. I did get myself and everything out though. I guess I'll never know if it was worth all the effort. Lol
@@BackcountryPaddler you said at the end that you need to see what you did wrong. You did nothing wrong. You went on a canoe trip, had some adversity and figured it out. Logan and I have said to each other that adversities make the trip sometimes. Those are the ones you’ll remember. Dont sweat it.
Love hearing that from a fellow tripper and one I love watching in particular! I honestly thought a lot of people would kinda scoff at this video, but instead I'm seeing a lot of people who have been in similar situations who love the honesty. Definitely feel compelled to keep showing it how it is!
Great video, that looked rough going through all that forest. Ok I have a stupid question, do you think you could hack through the ice in the lake? Glad you are ok. BTW I think you did great I wouldn't tear you apart for this. Cheers, Dave.
So, the ice was thick enough that I didn't want to risk getting stuck or falling in without a dry suit. Could I have? Maybe.. just preferred to play it safe.. thanks for watching it Dave. Always value your opinion!
Wow, how far were you parked from your campsite? I am looking to get into winter camping. I can not sit at home for a few months without doing any outdoor stuff :)
@@BackcountryPaddler Thank you! How do I start winter camping? Are there any resources that you could recommend? Websites, books, groups of people etc. I guess there are two things: learning how to do it and then finding people/maybe some club that I could participate with? I think that it might be a good idea to go with experienced people at least at the beginning of my learning curve.
Going with someone who's done it before is highly advised! Go in cold weather but not something THIS cold to start. Kevin Callan has some great books on winter camping. Check him out for sure! Also feel free to message me on Instagram I'd be happy to help talk you through some things.
I just felt so bad for you, I was holding my mouth in disbelief. I wanted so badly to reach in and help you. I felt your stress; I really did. My only suggestion for next time is to take an emergency beacon with you to summons help. You never know in these conditions. I pray that you continue making these AWESOME videos. I completely enjoyed this. Besides, with a gorgeous face like yours, It would be a shame not to see it anymore. hehehe. A retired woman from Texas.
I wasn't far enough out that it was a major concern where I'd need an emergency signal but it's always a good suggestion! I have one and plan to use it on more remote trips. I knew one way or another I could walk out of this situation. I'll keep trying to make videos! I can't do them as frequently as most can due to work and other circumstances but I love camping and filming it when I can! Glad you enjoy it!! Mark
Hey I appreciate it! A lot goes into camping and filming and my life's gotten really busy since this little trip. Had our first child, started a new job that takes up all my time and now a 2nd kiddo on the way. All good things though!
@@BackcountryPaddler i was thinking to myself, I bet he had a kid. Anyway, I'm from the Midwest and have always wanted to go to the Adirondacks. Watched your videos and it really inspired me. I plan to do a canoe trip up there this summer. When is the best time? Thanks for the videos!
Haha, having a kid really does change things for sure. Best time to go is before or after black fly season. I'd suggest any time after June. If you want the absolute best time to see the foliage it's mid-late September. It's stunning!
Great video. If would've been helpful if you showed throwing a rock at the pond to show how thick it was. I didn't know you tested until I read the video description, which I'm guessing most people didn't do. That pizza looked delicious.
There's a lot from that morning I didn't show because I stopped filming really. I was focused on getting out of there and my GoPro had broken too. It's questionable as to whether I could have broken through the ice as I paddled across the pond but without a dry suit I didn't think it was worth the risk, especially being alone. Hope you understand! Thanks for watching Lisa 😁
@@BackcountryPaddler I completely understand. My friend and I were watching it and we're like but how thick is it? 😂 Maybe it's the Alaskan in us. Sorry that it froze overnight for you. I honestly wouldn't have thought it would freeze solid that quickly. Luckily you were close enough to your car. The canoe trails here are remote and no cellphone service so it would've been a nightmare. Safety first.
Awesome video - thanks for sharing. I would not have expected the pond to freeze! I would have liked to see you try and throw a rock or two at the ice to see how thick or thin it was. I could not help but think maybe you could have broken through the ice. Even having to chip away at it as you go could have been better than all those trips. Thankfully you had a trail to walk and get out instead of being miles and miles from your car. I will never forget island camping off the coast of Maine as a teenager. We beached our skiff on the back side of an island and went into the forest to explore. Came back maybe an hour later and the tide had gone so far out there was no way to get the boat back into water. We had to wait the full tide cycle to get off the beach. Thankfully we were camping on the other side of the same island and it was more embarrassing than anything else. Imagine if we were exploring a different island we were NOT camping on and had no food or water etc... and had to wait out a 12 hour tide cycle with no food or water!!
12 hours without food! I'd die! 😅 I wish I had video'd it but if I recall I tried breaking the ice with a log and it was too thick. There's no way I was paddling across. To me it wasn't worth the risk of it being too thick, struggling and falling in.
I considered it, believe me, but it was too thick and wasn't worth the risk (to me) if I had gotten stuck at any point or fell in without a dry suit. Thanks for watching and happy new years John!
I did know a pond could freeze over night. I was camping as a boy scout some years ago. That's the first time I saw it. That have being said, why would you have not back loaded your canoe, so the front is out of the water just a bit. Use your cane as an ice breaker. Just take it up on the ice nice and slow and let your weight
If I ever encounter this again I may be more willing to try it honestly. Without a dry suit and with nobody else around I personally didn't think it was smart to get into the ice and attempt it. Believe me, I suffered for carrying everything out but I made it. 😁👍
Agreed safety first, 👍. The temp of the water from water to frozen is only a few degrees at that moment. If u had gone into the water on either day u would have been in real trouble. I am sorry u suffered but made my day, I'm glad I'm not the only one doing some questionable things. Thanks for sharing 👍 great video
Great idea.. I am actually quite surprised at how non-stick these little Walmart bread pans are. Almost no cleanup. But I bet it won't last, so eventually I'll use foil.. good call 👍
Hi Don, I did.. just not on camera. I wish i had filmed more that motion but it wasn't my priority (and my GoPro broke the night prior). The ice was thick enough that I didn't want to attempt paddling through it. Had I tried and gotten stuck somewhere then what? That was my thinking at least. Could I have gotten through, maybe. But I carried everything out and made it out safe that way.
What did you think of the Pizza DIP. Yay or Nay? It was delicious!😋

Awesome beautiful spot ... The pizza dip looked so good made me hungry. Wow that ice storm was intense... It looked beautiful though. I'm glad you made it out even by having to make several trips.
Thanks Nicole it was one to remember... inconvenient but memorable! Lol
Keep 'em comin' bro....keep 'em comin'!! Love it!
Thanks Scott!!!
Pizza dip looked awesome!! You are lucky that you didn't sleep on an island!! Thanks for sharing another great video!
I thought that too!!! No islands on this pond but if there were, who knows.. I may have. 😬
Good attitude= successful trip.....Nice job navigating your circumstance! I always learn something new every trip
I agree.. I do too. A lot of things!
Thanks James! These kind of comments make me want to get the pack ready and go back out right now!!
Thanks for the video. Fun watching
I'm glad you're enjoying my videos!
:-). Great stuff! Bad timing... thankfully you werent deeper in. Love the new tent and stove... looks like nice kit.
This just made my day that you watched one of my videos Jason! I do have bad timing, I'm pretty good at messing things up! 😂 all part of the fun.
@@BackcountryPaddler yeah for sure!... good drama too... I'd have said the same things if I came out of the tent and saw that :-)
I can only imagine your narration! Haha
It's Good in the Woods sent me over here to view your video, very good recommendation .. thanks for posting !
Awesome! Justin is a great dude. Hopefully he and I get together for an Adirondack trip soon. 👍 thanks for watching and Happy Holidays Jerry!
Always have fun...
Awesome video.
Nice 🛶
Thank you!
Thanks Richard!! Always!
Keep sharing that tip! It sure does.. faster than I ever would've thought!! You are welcome to borrow the stove anytime you want. 👍
We live and learn. Great video regardless of issues at the end. Pizza dip is a must next camping trip. Don’t forget! Lol
Thanks bud. Let's do a whole cast iron pizza or 2!
What an adventure, definitely one you will not forget and will probably be a story you will tell for quite some time. Way to adapt and overcome!
Thanks my dude! 👍
Glad you decided to post this video! You finally listened to me about something! Lol. That dip did look amazing and glad you got out safely.
Haha thanks man!! Your not a bad guy to take advice from. Gonna start making that pizza dip at home now. Easiest snack ever!!
Cheers to that, thanks for the video's. oh that frozen pond, trips don't always go as planned.
Thanks Jay! I'm digging your new logo! 👍👍
Good stuff keep it coming
Thanks Howard!
I loved the intro to your video... I love your swift! I'm trying to get my hands on one of those... I love your content too.. I'm a UA-camr from Northwest Washington. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Stay safe out there, Brotha!

Oh good... I love talking to you..
@@BackcountryPaddler I know, who doesn’t!
Literally everyone else. 😂 jk my friend.
I love this Ron! I'm perfectly OK with sharing my mistakes even if it helps just 1 person think twice or do things safer. Glad you watched it!

@@BackcountryPaddler ahahah it's true to scale right??? I've been good buddy had a great humbling experience on my last trip managed to wrap my canoe on a tree and fall into the cold winter water! As we said, these tend to be the best adventures!
Oh man!! That's intense! You survived! Did the canoe??
@@BackcountryPaddler haha yes we both survived! although my iPhone, tripod and water filter weren't so lucky!
That's a great video, love it! Shame about the walk out, but that's the fun of winter canoe camping!
Nice tent too!
I agree.. I had a new experience for sure! The tent was nice and roomy. Thanks for watching Adrian!
What a lovely video, and channel.Hope you have a lovely 2022 and stay safe debs xx..ps commented twice bots
Thank you so much! I hope 2022 treats you well too!!
Wow temp must have really dropped. Thanks for sharing. ATB. Grays
Yeah for sure... never knew a while pond could freeze like that so fast! Thanks for watching, Grays.
@@BackcountryPaddler glad u got back safely
Don't feel too bad. When I was a kid I decided to go winter camping. Hauled all my gear on an old sled. Easy going and fairly mild weather. Too mild. Overnight all the snow melted. I was in the woods with a sled full of gear. Pulled it home thru the mud.
Ugh yeah that doesn't sound fun pulling a sled through the mud!! I plan on doing my next winter camp with a pulk sled and this isn't something I really thought about... glad you commented Steve!
An interesting turn of events! And you are a youtuber! LOL. What you went through, this is how we learn. At least you didn't go more remote.
Haha true and true. It would have been worse had I not been able to carry everything out. I was sore for a few days and broke some gear, ripped my jacket etc. They're just things though! Thanks for watching it bud.
Awesome! I'm hoping to get a hot tent one of these days. Love that stove.
Thanks Darren. 👍 They definitely make camping in the cold a far more enjoyable experience. Hope you get yourself one!
Sick video man!! 💪 great shots and progression, especially the touch of drama at the end.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
great video!

Ouch, tough one!
I appreciate you watching it Kevin! No bears at least. 😅
scary to see the frozen pond but it looked beautiful and silent.
Honest trip...good on you! We've all made some miscalculations...
I'm so happy to see people appreciating the honesty!! I was not expecting it so much. It makes me really excited to keep filming and just being myself. I'll keep telling it and filming it as it is, and if I make mistakes... so be it!
The beer jinxed you. Next time you go camping in the late fall bring margarita mix lol
A couple of quotes for you…
“But did you die?”
“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”
“You cook good rabbit pilgrim” 😆
Thanks for another great video
The penny jinxed me! Margarita mix!!!🤣😆 I love the "but did you die?" quote hahaha.
What a trip!! Absolutely crazy. I’d probably have overlooked that possibility as well honestly.
Now we will both know it's possible!!
That was rough. Nice setup, cool camp. The Weather Channel APP on your phone might help understanding the conditions you’re getting into. I’m all over the weather with several sources for my snowmobile info 😊❤️🇺🇸❄️☃️🛷🔥⛺️🌄
Thanks!! I knew it was going to be in the 20s overnight. Just didn't think the whole pond would freeze! 😆 I know that now!!
It’s a learning curve! I’ve made my share of oops!
Best way to truly learn in my opinion. Happy Holidays!
Good tip! I always question just how dry this particular bag would really keep my gear. Doesn't seem to fold and seal all that well..
@@BackcountryPaddler PS - Loved your pizza dip idea. I can see that making it into the rotation of many people's meals.
I accidentally dismissed your last reply about the pizza dip 😔 didn't get to read it!
@@BackcountryPaddler No worries...I just said my guess is it will make its way into many people's food rotation on future trips.
@@snapperpetta9145 ah, I hope it does! Simple and delicious.
Someday eating like this all the time will catch up to me. 🤣 Definitely was a learning experience!
@@BackcountryPaddler just gotta get the right drugs to take care of it.
Another great video, especially the intro and editing overall. Way to stay positive in the face of adversity. Btw, who makes that camp knife?
Thanks Eric!! It's a Condor Bushlore knife.
In about two hours I'll have the kayak on the water here in northwest Missouri.

"Winter couldn't come fast enough..."
Well, that comment looks different the next moring... 😂
Loving the conoe trips and the hot tent vids.
What are you planning for '22?
Amazing plans!I hoped to do more long trips this year but didn't get the chance to go on most. Now I'm afraid to plan on winter and get my hopes up. 🙃
What Pond ? adks? Water freezes fast once at critical temp esp. without wind.
@@BackcountryPaddler yup just what I figured. Very smart to play it safe!
Curious do you have experience with canoe barrels vs big portage pack. Barrels seem to really help keep everything dry. I'm not sure yet
Id be scared to do these things by myself! and even tho i dont like pizza that pizza dip looks amazing
Don't worry. I'm scared too. But all bad feelings go away when eating pizza dip. 😂
That’s tough man. I’ve never had a freeze overnight that I couldn’t break through. Must have been really cold. That stove is awesome though. Nice job.
@@BackcountryPaddler ok fair enough, that makes absolute sense. Yes falling in is the most dangerous thing, good point!
I doubt I would have, but ya never know. Wasn't worth the risk to me. I like a good struggle 🤣
Wow, how far were you parked from your campsite?
I am looking to get into winter camping. I can not sit at home for a few months without doing any outdoor stuff :)
Too far. 😄
Winter camping can be the best, honestly!

Mother nature is no joke! I enjoy your videos, why did you stop making them?
@@BackcountryPaddler I was thinking August or September. Thanks for the input!
It's literally perfect there that time of year. You will love it.
Yes ponds freeze in a hurry
Something I learned that day.... 😂
I'd die! 😅
I wish I had video'd it but if I recall I tried breaking the ice with a log and it was too thick. There's no way I was paddling across. To me it wasn't worth the risk of it being too thick, struggling and falling in.
I`ve had this happen But I just paddled through the ice ,for me it was`nt more than 1/2 in so broke up easy
I considered it, believe me, but it was too thick and wasn't worth the risk (to me) if I had gotten stuck at any point or fell in without a dry suit. Thanks for watching and happy new years John!
What is a freezing pond? Question from Florida. 😁
😂😂 you know that thing in your kitchen that makes ice. It's generally next to or above the refrigerator portion....it's kind of like that..
@@BackcountryPaddler ah, thanks 😊. Looks like a beautiful place to camp. Shame you couldn't ice break with your canoe. Thanks for the great video.
No much of a winter fan, but that does look enjoyable.
It definitely can be if you have enough wood and don't make silly mistakes like I tend to do! 😆
@@BackcountryPaddler But it’s how we learn! Great stuff anyways. Stay safe and keep enjoying the great outdoors!
Very true! You do the same!
Glad you liked seeing it Dave! I appreciate your thoughts on it too. 🙏
@@BackcountryPaddler your welcome, keep up the great work 👍 love the channel
Rule #1 of any outdoor adventure: Don’t be greedy. As soon as temps are below freezing at night, my canoe trips are done for the year.
Believe me, I learned my lesson! 😆 I hope someone else watches this and learns from it too.
no judgment at all except: use aluminum foil in the baking pan for faster cleanup.
Great idea.. I am actually quite surprised at how non-stick these little Walmart bread pans are. Almost no cleanup. But I bet it won't last, so eventually I'll use foil.. good call 👍
- Did you even check the ice to see how thick it was? You'd be mad if it was thin enough to paddle out of there.
So you learned some stuff...at least that big herd of coyotes didn't come for your pepperoni.
Haha I did make it out with all of the pepperoni!
Shit happens brother...x2 when your dealing with mother nature 🌲
She kicked my ass that day! 😆
