He's absolutely right. Sponge, as well as under gravel which he doesn't use, are cheap and fail safe. Hang on back, canister, and sumps depend on water level and due to the number of moving parts, there's just more chance of something going wrong. He's absolutely right, sponge filters are the easiest to clean. Cleaning any of the others would involve trying to scrub little corners that are hard to reach.

Undergravel I believe has became a dated design, they're difficult and a hassle to work with

You are so right! In Asia people mostly use a power head connected to a hose going in to a box on top of the tank. I have used this method of filtration for years. It is so easy. Sponges are easier though. Also,I had a HOB filter over flow on to our wood floor. Now I rinse the media every week and change cotton every 4 days. My fish grew since they are now 4yrs old.

Just ordered one today for my goldfish tank! When it gets here, I'll have triple filtration: a HOB with a custom zeolite cartridge for ammonia, undergravel filtration with air uplift tubes and my new sponge filter. Can't wait to see how well it does!

Sponge filters rule. They take some time to mature and work properly, but team them with a nicrew battery backup air pump and you have a foolproof filter system that will even carry on if you have a power outage.

And Luke how air lines drain tank say air pump breaks or power goes out. The air in line will feel with water from spring to top of the tank and that momentum will siphon your tank empty. Please put the anti reverse airline values on system.

I like the sponges to look but I like the ones that suction cups to back of the tank. All you have to do reach in grab sponges rinse it. But there fine sponges and your kind sit on bottom always corse.

There is little plastic really cheap thing you add the end of the tube and it prevents water from go backwards for sponge filters. Basicly no chance for failure :D

I find that the best system is a hangback. Doesn't matter what capacity usually but a hangback full of very porous sponge material and 3 sponge filters in my 55 gallons, is the most efficient way to go
And don't forget..... to effectively set where the hangback is pointing and where thr intake is as well, you need that cyclone effect for perfect optimized filtration so let's look at your tanks, we see them against the wall.
A fluval hangback the intake would be on the left, so we put the hangback on the very right back side of thr tank, the waterflow will cycle all across around the side of the tank, and then 360 back to the intake, and this can be further pushed with putting the same hangback on the front left side of the tank. I do this wirh my hangbacks and it creates the PERFECT CYCLONE EFFECT with the water flow, and then a few sponge filters for your filtration that stockpiles bio load
Yes is sounds crazy but try doing the opposite wirh filtration next, try to purposely destroy the cyclone effect with your waterfowl placement, I experimented doing this too and had tank crashes, wirh only a few VERY FEW ranchus , I have bacteria blooms! And these are 50 gallon fluval hangbacks I have and 2 sponge filters I tried it in, the cyclone is important

I have a canister filter that filters my tank like 5 times an hour, but there’s hardly any oxygenation. I had to get wave makers and point them at the surface but honestly I could’ve just bought one of those sponge filters lol. What air pump do you use? I have a 75 gallon and I might need to get three or four. I still haven’t come across one of those big ones with 4 ports but I’ll get individual ones if I have to.

Great video! I have a quick question, in your experience what is the best way to determine how many and what size sponge filters you need for a goldfish tank?
I was planning on setting up s 75 gallon with 3 or 4 goldfish. I was thinking 2 or 3 sponge filters rated for 120 gallons would be a good place to start.
    Thanks!

Hi Luke, i have a question. i am planning to get a 120 gal tank for my goldfish and for filtration system i am planning to get a cannister filtration system. since goldfish doesn't like too much flow, how powerful of a cannister filter i should get? The fluval FX6 can produce 925 gal/hour. is it overkill? some people even mentioned getting 2 of those so that when u are cleaning one, there is still another one still running and providing the beneficial bacteria. Can u please help me? so far cannister filter fits into the picture in terms easy maintenance

  • @deusexmachina1253
    @deusexmachina1253 Рік тому

I don't like HOB because it takes back the water it drops, and there would be no water movement in the other areas. A sponge filter is cheap and efficient for small fish, but it can't filter big poop. Cannister filters are good for larger tanks.

The sponge filter and the hang on the back filter is just trash. In my bare bottom aquaponic Aquarium I use a top filter. I clean out the mechanical filtration every other day which means I don't have any nitrates,no water change ,no fish poop, no fish food in the tank. Everyone that has problems with nitrates uses substrate where the fish poop decays. If you want to use substrate go to Father Fish and he'll show you how to set up a tank.
