Hey coach! True story, I havent touched a basketball in 13 years! I played competitive ball through HS and some rec in college then nothing until 'The Last Dance' re-sparked my passion. Now I have a new ball, new kicks, and I am shooting every day :) I've been watching your videos and realized literally no coach I ever had truly 'taught' me how to shoot, zero mechanics whatsoever. I have learned more from one of your 15min videos than my entire competitive career, honestly. What I would love to see from you is a slow motion video with voice over pointing out all the mechanics from feet to fingers. The shooter could be you or any NBA player but I'd love to see at least 3 to 4 shots in slow motion from the side and from straight on so I can mimic and really get my own form down. Splash on!
I've been trying to transition my shot more into a one motion action for some time but sometimes find moving the ball from my waist isn't the smoothest. The S shaped motion makes a whole lot of sense and it feels a lot better even after one session. Thanks!
I imagine this will be a good exercise for working on your leg / load timing. Bomb range needs proper coordination with the legs at release so the shot has higher percentage arc.
This may very well be the "secret sauce" for my jumpshot that I have been searching for! I have always struggled with fluidity, my shot has been choppy, strained, and segmented. I practice this technique this morning. It felt really awkward at first, but I started to get the hang of it after a while. Videoed my shot, and even though I am still learning the technique, my shot was already fluid, smoother, and more relaxed! Gonna keep working on it!
I agree that fluiditity is important, but won't bringing the ball in front more make it easier for defenders to just slap it down or otherwhise block your shot?
The biggest take away from this video is the straight line profile. If you don't do anything else. Make sure the shot pocket, set point. and follow through is coming through the center line of your body. If you can get that right your shot will always be straight.
Actually it is far more good shooters that shoot with the loop or the S-curve (from rhe side) than with a straight shotline (from the front). It is after the set point that your shotline needs to be as straight as possible.
Thanks for the shout out, coach! 🙏 I do want to point out that you probably don't want to draw the loop by moving your elbows. I think your wrist should load early and elbow angle should stay unchanged (about 90deg) during the lift. A loop is a natural by-product when you do a regular jump shot from the pass. Nothing specifi ally new in this. To me, a loop is more of a analysis tool for coaches, than a teaching tool for players. 🔶❤️🏀
@@ShotMechanics I have found that the loop is probably the best tool to start with a player who is struggling with his mechanics. Besides the improved flow, the loop corrects so many other thing as well and without specifically pointing them out to a player. Less to think is definitely better.
Funny how every shooting expert says Steph uses their technique, even though they are all different. One motion camp always shows Steph, too, and you go frame by frame of his (even in this video!), he is a one motion shooter. Oh well, whatever works. Lower body is more important anyway, according to Ray Allen.
I used to hate dipping the ball for the longest but later on i realized that when i dipped my shot path was bad, like i always focused more on the dip than having my palm under the ball. And you know what problems that can cause with arc
Hello coach! I have a question about one of the reasons that my shot is broke, you have video called “ 3 more reasons why your shot is broke” and there was a reason called” set point timing”! it means that when your hips are down, the ball should be down and when the ball is in the shot path, your feet should be straight and on toes, ready to explode! My question is that, do you have any drills to fix that problem? Thanks anyways! Keep grinding 💯
Great, vid. @shot mechanics Could you tell me how tall are you? Lot of things depend on height of an individual. So one needs to modify acc to height and weight.
Yes, you can (and the best shooters are constantly doing it). It is just a matter of shot selection and assessing the distance between you and your opponent. Remember, you don't want to reach out with hands too much. The S-curve or Loop is a by product of a natural jumping motion.
Hopefully your reading this but Can you do more videos to help left handed players no one really teaches left handed players the proper shooting mechanics for left hand I really need help with my shot line and can you go in depth of the right type of shot line for left handed players
Loop Basketball Training I try to but it’s hard for me to mirror the right hand tips that’s why Im hopefully wish he makes a left hand shooting series and talks about shit line because nobody really reaches left handers the right mechanics
The s curve feels awkward to me because I dip and place the ball really close to my tummy before I move it to my set point. Can you try this one and tell me whether or not should I change it?
It is good to keep the ball close to the body as long as you are not trying to over do it and limbo under the ball. The S-curve is a natural by-product of your jumping motion and you don't have to try to do it in anyway.
you say when looking at your shot from the front it should be straight, but i’m noticing you tend to bring the ball to your left when you shoot. Not judging, i’m just very curious and i’m trying to gather all these things about form and it’s hard to believe some people’s take.
Step back shot is a regular shot after the step back. Dah. 😊 S-curve could also be described as a "half loop", like when shooting from a dribble. A full loop shape only comes when shooting from a pass.
I put together a couple of those Loop (shot path) videos from my Instagram and published them here in UA-cam. Check it out if interested and if you wonder how the NBA stars actually do it. Examples of Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Stephen Curry, Dell Curry, Joe Harris, JJ Reddick, Bam Adebayo, Victor Oladipo and Lauri Markkanen.
A lot, and I mean a LOT of coaches talk differently about the shot path. I suggest you to see yourself, how the great shooters actually shoot. Then decide if you want to shoot that way too, and who of us coaches you want to rely on.
The ball doesn't stop at any point in the players hands. That is very important for the flow. The lift of the arms (and ball) is crucial part of the jump (rhythmically) and therefore part of the force production.
The "shot path" its different every time actually..depending on where they cacth the ball where the defender is and a lot of things..klay shots without diping the ball like 40% of the times what path are you talking about lol...this shit is not consistent and is not so important for your shot
I disagree on both of you Klaims here. Klay dips definitely in all of his regular, uncontested shots. Special shots happen from time to time and he is able to adapt very well. Also I do feel that keeping the ball moving all the time and getting good rhythm to your shot is incredibly important.
I noticed this was usually because my shooting hand thumb left the ball too early this giving the ball. Lock your wrist make sure that thumb stays firm throughout your entire motion. The ball will literally roll off your fingers straight at the rim.

@shot mechanics
Could you tell me how tall are you?
Lot of things depend on height of an individual. So one needs to modify acc to height and weight.
Can you still have an S-curve if you bring the ball up the side because the defense is affecting your straight motion?

That is quite common with good shooters. I think it has something to do with the shoulder joint mobility.
Do I focus on bring the ball up to my set point with my dominant hand or both my guide and my shooting hand I really don’t know
