Great conversation, you two! I really hope you'll love Green Bone Saga, Mike. And as always, great to hear you praise The Licanius trilogy. It seriously has one of the best endings in modern fantasy, imo. Also Jake, high five for having Mistborn sparking our love for reading adult fantasy! :D
High 5! I definitely see a lot of praise for how Licanius wraps up, I should be reading it later this year. I think Mike is going to like Green Bone quite a lot.
Audiobooks are a godsend. I work crazy hours and don’t have much time to read physical copies anymore so I listen at work. Currently on my first listen to ASOIF. Read the physical twice. It’s still the best series of all time to me.
I just finished Proven Guilty (book 8 of Dresden) and I still can’t believe how right everyone is that says the series just gets better and better! I can’t wait to continue
Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. I thought they're overhyping it. Nope, there are worlds between the first book and the last few. Incredible series.
Comment for the algorithm -- I was one of those people that had to wait for every book of Wheel of Time. Yes, I am old. I have to agree with Jake. Liveship Traders is an excellent series. I read the abridged version of Moby Dick, and they are galaxies apart. (Oh, and I had to wait for each of those to be released too.)
I love the reviews!! Mike, I have to pace myself with your reviews because I almost always add the book/series to my reading list…too many books not enough time!! Your reviews with spoilers at the end were my favorite because I would pause the video - go read the book - and come back after to hear your thoughts :)
Hey Mike, I was wondering if you would consider doing a Why You Should Read for the Sun Eater saga with the upcoming release of the 4th book? I've been considering to give it a shot, I've had the first book on my TBR for a while and I think your WYSR video on it might push me over the edge and make me start it!
Looking forward to this very much! I’ll be watching in chunks over the course of the day. Yes, Jake, we are the non-conformists of BookTube who don’t care about book haul videos!
Great discussion! I had so much fun watching you try to convince each other on what books to read soon, although my own TBR seems to be feeling the impact now.
Once you start Cradle, you can't stop. This is the best place to start in fantasty - it's simply such a great read. I hope you will start it this year. I'm so addicted. I've read the series 3 times through already and that's not usual for me. I read the whole series before the next book comes out.
I think you will love The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell and the Audio book is Fantastic I'm not an Audio book guy but Man it's awesome I read them 1st then Audioed them !!
Great conversation. Subscribed to Jake. Mike you’ll enjoy Dandelion Dynasty if/when you get to it. Sneakily brutal. I can’t get any GGK books here in Australia for an acceptable price! Someone help!
I still love the reviews. I picked up The Justice of Kings on audible this week off Mike's review; I appreciate the honest reviews and lack of sponsorships but he really deserves a commission :) Mike definitely should give Robin Hobb another chance, but then I completely skipped liveship and then regretted it after some later crossovers I won't spoil here.
I like the reviews - especially for things I've read already - and couldn't care less about book hauls, but I still listen to your book hauls. I'm also eyes only - I don't think I would have the attention span to listen to audio books without missing stuff.
The Green Bone Saga really is nothing like Poppy War so don’t worry there. Only similarity is they have Asian inspired settings and there is a school section in book one of both.
Jake and I started around the same time! Both of you are great, just started watching but wanted to leave a comment before I forgot haha. Aha, we get in Robin Hobb territory. Agree with Jake, DO NOT skip Liveship Mike! I think it will be your favorite series of the whole Realm of the Elderlings.
Fun discussion, I'm still on Toll the Hounds as a first time reader, we are sure more than three first timers left. Excited to see you read some Liveship
Oh yeah you're gonna love Green Bone Saga, Mike! And WHAT you haven't read the Dresden Files short stories?! You definitely should, there's so much important information in there that fills in the gaps. So you must not know about Ivy and Kincaid and what they did before Battleground?? Man you're going to love the short stories.
People don't know what they're talking about with Ghost Story. That book is by far the smartest book of the series. It's really part two of Changes. It takes the speed out, makes Harry a passive spectator (for most of the book), and shows him and us, the repercussions of his reckless decision making in Changes. It's simply brilliant. We meet every character, and see them struggle with the after effects of Changes. We see the city of Chicago go through turmoil created by the power vacuum that arose by Harry's absence. Then the book shifts focus on Molly who bears the biggest guilt and we see her struggle, recover, and grow to become her own woman that steps out of Harry's shadow. It's such an important and bold book. Some of the most important character developments happened in that book. It's a top 5 book, imho.
Enjoyed this TAN, I like Jake he sounds like a good guy. I'll give his channel a look over after this. Mike please get round to Guy Gavriel Kay as soon as you can, he is an awesome author. My second best author right behind Charles De Lint. I would love to know your thoughts on his books when you read them.
Thanks! Also yes, we need to spread Guy Gavriel Kay. It seems like so many people read 1 of his books, love it, and than don't read any more for a decade. I have read 8 of his books now, and really enjoy literally all of them
@@jakebishop7822 I just have A Brightness Long Ago and All The Seas Of The World (when it drops in May) left to read. I'm intending to have a reread of his earlier books when I get chance. Have you tried Janny Wurts yet? She is another amazing author.
@@jakebishop7822 I highly recommend The Empire Trilogy collaboration with Raymond E Feist. An good introduction to both her and Raymond's writing. Raymond's Riftwar Cycle has many excellent books in it also. Magician being a real classic.

I can def see why Assasins Quest wouldn't click and be a drag for some but man I loved it, perfect book for me. The slow travel made me feel more connected to the character's situation and the world but yeah if your not invested in that, it probably has the opposite effect ;)
Jake, I also don't think that 'The Stand' is among King's best. I'm a huge King fan, though. He's very prolific and has a huge backlist, so you'll find something that you enjoy. I do think that his strength is brilliant characters facing supernatural horror.
I have found other people who have agreed with me about that since reading it. I'm not giving up on King for sure though. Basically every author has at least one book I'm luke warm on, so I am happy to give authors multiple chances
My reading tends not to be the most upto date reader but i have booked days of for the Daredevil series, the release of Skyrym, Mass Effect 2 and i booked the next day off after i watched a marathon of the Dark Knight movied when part 3 came out.

Bahahaha, Jake! Yes, most first videos are awful…my first 6 months really was AWFUL! Anytime someone comments on one of those, I cringe, lol. I love book hauls because that’s how I book shop. Reviews though, that’s how I found BookTube way back in the day.

Just have so much reading to do I’m not ready for new books yet 😂
I am an audiobook listener as well as a hard book reader. I really like the narrator for the Codex Alera. I have seen some harsh criticism about her but she's really good. She's a veteran narrator so I really don't get the criticism. And iblove Codex Alera. Varg, Doroga and Fidelius fan for life
I didn't read Rain Wild (except maybe half of the first book--didn't like it), and I was fine when I read the final trilogy. There were obviously details that I wasn't getting the full picture on, but it was at the same level as things you don't fully appreciate because you forgot some minor character from 6 books ago that has suddenly become important again. I think you can skip it if you don't like it. Liveship is great, though.
The Expanse is excellent up to it's best book, Nemesis Games, and then it just goes down hill. Every book is worse than the one before it. I think the last 3 became skimmers. And then the last book... ugh... I kind of wish I had only watched the show and never picked up the books.
GGK books are one of the most boring books I've read. Couldn't even understand what Tigana was about at all. I think I wasn't ready. But I've tries 3 of his books and none clicked, except Ysabel was manageable at least. Maybe I'll try Florentine mosaics or Fiovanar one day
You've seen me, I dislike Bernard Cornwell. I loved first three I read, but then it just became the same book all over again. So formulaic it hot old and boring and I couldn't care. I am talking about any Cornwell books.
