I think it's too much! it's leaking like this, and it goes right under the safety tape. lay a thin layer on the surface of the APU and radiator, then draw the excess into the syringe! Never leave unnecessary drops!
I saw it drop when I was watching this on my smart tv so I came here to mention this as well, lets hope he got it off, or sees this and checks it before it does something bad.
The (likely nickel) coating on the copper heatsink is just that, a coating. It protects the heatsink from degradation from the gallium in the TIM, and so when spreading it back to the centre, it's probably not recommended to use a metal pick or screwdriver unless you've very careful. A graze is enough to allow permeability into the copper. Better to use a plastic or Teflon tool, in my opinion. TronicsFix was clearly very gentle using the dull curve of the pick and dragged at the surface tension of the fluid when he did it, he's not an idiot, but hearing "screwdriver" made me wince a bit. Especially when this channel shows us the kind of chimps that try to fix these things sometimes.
This man was so much happy with the perfect amount of thermal paste now its unimaginable how much he will be happy with perfect amount of liquid metal 😊
It would be really interesting to see you tackle things like installing HDMI mods or Terraonion MODE mods into old consoles like the Dreamcast, Saturn and OG Playstation on the channel.
My primary concern with LM is longevity. I've never used it personally but what I understand it needs to be reapplied every 1-2 years because it dries out quicker than a good thermal paste does. So I do wonder if in 2-3 years time we won't have a bunch of overheating PS5's to worry about.
My concern with the liquid metal is its longevity. Specifically the longevity of the materials required to make it not ruin the rest of the system, since as that foam pad and its adhesive ages I don't know if it's going to slowly let the liquid metal leak.
There’s a great ps5 silicone thermal pad video on YT but it’s in German. Would be awesome if you did a video on replacing the stock thermal puddy with proper thickness silicone pads
Very nice breakdown. I thought you added too much liquid metal, but when you opened it up again it seemed perfect haha. I wonder what type of adhesive it is holding the foam border down. Looks rubbery. I don't think I'd be comfortable replacing it without new adhesive personally. Nice work!
Is there any chance of the liquid metal causing issues during operation if you keep the system vertical? Seems like horizontal would be the ideal way to use the ps5 based on the viscosity of the liquid metal? Maybe I’m being paranoid.
The Terminator: Not like me, T-1000, advanced prototype. Made of mimetic polyalloy John Connor: What the hell does that mean? The Terminator: Liquid metal.
Probably not, since it's thousands of tiny solder balls... let alone matching the NAND to the controller and such... If the NAND wears out, you're probably better off buying a new PS5...
The material safety data sheet says that Thermal Grizley Konductonaut is an alloy of Gallium, Indium, and Tin. No report on the % of each since that's not required for an MSDS. But that's the metals that are in it.
I've seen a lot of Gamer's Nexus videos on this topic. They made a big deal that you should never allow it to pool up. So based on that, this is too much liquid metal. However from what I've seen Sony themselves seems to put on too much as well. Maybe that's why they have so much protection because automating the perfect amount is too difficult. It's actually surprising how little gamer's nexus and De-Bauer use.
@@Tronicsfix yeah I've noticed that. I thought it was kind of odd. But then again it's probably a lot harder to get the perfect amount in a massive heat sync rather than a tiny IHS. The only thing that really matters is that the tiny SMD's don't get touched. In most of those videos I've seen, they'll put fingernail polish over them to prevent issues.
I wonder what happens when the foam barrier inevitable disintegrates (unless this foam is special in some way?) What will stop the LM from flowing onto sensitive components?
I'm sure they made sure of it time will tell. Even then that spongey material acts like a second barrier. It's likely extra protection in case it escapes.
@9:25 Can those components be covered with nail polish (I think that's what some techs use) to keep the liquid metal from damaging them if (God forbid) they ever got any on them? Or what's that other liquid you use to cover traces and UV cure them, maybe that could work too?
I bought my oldest son a ps5 and my youngest son put like 3 cds in it and I pulled them out but it will pull them in and try to read them but it doesn’t what can I do

10:00 Thats the result of LM reacting with the silicon, you can remove that layer by doing die lapping but it won't make any difference in thermals.

On the other hand all the videos I've seen were putting it inside the IHS.........and there is none in this case. So who knows.
When you remove the motherboard from a PS5 the first time it's definitely in a pool. They use a ton of it so that's why I put that much on.
@@Tronicsfix yeah I've noticed that. I thought it was kind of odd. But then again it's probably a lot harder to get the perfect amount in a massive heat sync rather than a tiny IHS. would reapplying liquid metal fix overheating issues on a ps5 ?
does liquid metal prone to leak? if you put your PS5 on vertical stand

Yes, but I usually use conformal coating.
Conformal coating on non-potted IP68 rated boards is a pain to work on replacing components... how do you get it off ?
Do a similar video when u made a hole on the ps4. Lets see if the ps5 runs cooler with a hole on sides or without the panels
Good idea
What would you recommend when to clean a ps5?
All depends on how dirty it is. If there's dust on the vents it needs to be cleaned...at least on the outside.
Does liquid metal perish with time and heat like thermal paste does, and needs changing - or being just a metal will last the console lifetime?
One question Steve, is it unsafe to use IPA to clean the liquid metal?
It's safe to use to clean LM
Very good video
Question, do we even need to remove the adhesive? to clean it and apply? I don’t know where I can even get a new one of those
