Hi Robin, I watched your real review of R18 and I would like to ask you a question that is about the first bike. I have used 250cc bike for a quite a while and I'm so much into R18 that I'm planning to buy at the first chance in this year. Do you think as a first big bike am I able to handle this bike as a elementary guy? Of course this question might have different perspectives but as a very experienced person what would you tell me or suggest me? I appreciate your review by the way! It was so great.
@@lifeofchina6411 that is going to be a big transition in bikes. The R18 is a great bike, but let me give you a couple of things to think about when/before you get into the dealership. This is a powerful bike! Going from 250cc to 1800cc will be a shift in skills and awareness. The first time I started this bike surprised me. You can feel the power of the motor. And acceleration will be a HUGE difference. Not that you can’t, it is just the need for awareness and possible change in skill set for riding. Also be away the weight is very different. It is a heavy bike. Not sure how much, I would have to look it up, but you will feel it. Difference, the center of gravity is very low, so it is easy to handle the extra weight. If you get one, and I hope you do, just be prepared to spend a good bit of time practicing with it to adjust your skills for it and build your confidence.

I copied everything you said and even went to dealership today to scale the bike 😂 it's pretty heavy but when I ignited it OMG! Just made me feel amazing. Hi Robin, I’m Australia & I bought my First Edition R18 last November. To say I love it is an understatement! I’ve never been a HD rider & have had boxer BM’s for over 20 years. That customary horizontal engine “slap” is what I love most about BMW boxers. I’m glad you were open minded, being a Harley girl to at least try one & actually admit you got a kick out of the R18. Howdy! I am all about new experiences and learning new things. I still love my Road King and Fat Boy, but after test riding a couple of BMWs I understand now why others love them. Good choice, the R18 is great bike.
I test rode one the other day, what a bike, powerful, responsive, fast and a joy to ride. You just have to get used to that big shake when she starts, wonderful.
That is the truth! I was warned about that before I got on and glad I listened. And I agree with all you said about the bike. It is a great bike and one I would consider in the future.
I have a ‘68 R69S… one of my fave rides ever. You’re right in that the bike kind of wobbles when you hit the gas or are at a stop… takes a little getting used to.
I’ve had my first edition for a few months. 6000 miles in and I love it!!!! The heads never really get that hot and I’ve used them as highway pegs a few times. The seat was horrible but a Corbin fixed that. Loved your review
I have owned a few different bikes including BMW and HD. I have 3 kids now and no time to ride so sold my last bike, but the R18 is on my "some day" list when the kids get older and I can get back to riding.

Cool review. When are you buying one? "Riding a metric bike"? 😂 Only the engine displacement is quoted in metric! I've never replaced a stock seat. Is this a Harley thing? I like the look of this bike. Nice that you got a test ride.
The Boxer is such a sweet engine to ride and at 1800cc that is a huge torque monster R18...I'm glad you enjoyed the test ride...I also have a soft spot for BMW as I currently ride the BMW R1250 GS Adventure however, I am also enjoying my recently acquired 2021 Road Glide Special and enjoying owning two of the best bikes in the industry...ride safe and thanks for sharing.
BMW makes a great bike for sure. And calling the R18 a torque monster is spot on! I can totally see why some die hard riders. And my husband is drooling over the 1250 GS. He wants a 2nd bike as well.

Amen you’re spot on, my “newest” Beamer is a 1999 r1100s I bought new in ‘99. I’ve got my dads r75/5 as well. They maintenance is absolutely minimal compared to most bikes (shaft driven boxers anyway) mine has 90k miles and runs, shifts and corners like new (1999 new) but still. My next (likely last) bike will probably be the r18b or Transcontinental
It would be nice to know if you choose the "rock" or the "role" ridingmode. it definitely didnt rain... (3rd option). and you can adjust the levers for shifting and brakeing.
@@MotoByChance Dear Robin, I will tell you one good Limey car, which would be good at chasing you, and keeping up with you, doing something naughty but nice, if I was a Limey cop, and that is either the Vauxhall Zafira or the Vauxhall Corsa, because my Dad and I were having a good race with some bikers once, visiting somebody, and we kept successfully keeping up with this motorcycle chapter.

Test rode a TC version of the R18, hard to find the shifter and rear brake if you have large feet with boots. I like the concept, just can't find a place for my feet to be happy. The OBGYN sturup position for Hiway rests solution is meh. Younger riders will likely fit better. Quite a few for sale with less than 1500 miles, that could be telling.
I agree with the difficulty finding the shifter and break, and I have small feet. I didn’t have that same issue with the R1250RT, so it must be an issue unique to the R18. 🤷🏼♀️ Regardless, this is still a beast of a machine. So much raw power.
That is a good question. Since I have not had the pleasure of riding an Indian Scout, my base of knowledge is limited. The R18 is a powerful machine to say the least. But it comes down to of the bike suits you or not. Only you know that.
Was at the dealership a few days ago and saw the first one with a faring. Kinda cool. Still prefer the look naked or with a windshield, but love how versatile this bike is. 👍🏻😎
I’m biased as I am a big fan of BMW’s,. However I’d like to see what you’d think of the Triumph Rocket 3. My second bike is a BMW R Nine T, I think you’d like it and find it more to your liking over the R18.
I so want to try the Triumph Triple R, but would have to go way to far into LA to do that. LA is not my favorite place to ride. I did test ride another BMW and that video should be up in a week or so. Now that bike… that one I really liked. 😉😁😎
Great u had a test ride on the beamer. Reverse gear is cool 😎👍. Yeah naked bike riding with no fairing is wild on the highway, and the boxer motor moving to the left when starting / reving takes a bit to get used to. Heaps of go on that bike and big torque 🏍️👍 Ps if you get a chance, suggest to take a new Goldwing (manual) bagger for a ride where the flat six boxer style motor does not pull to the left to experience the difference.
Didn’t have time to get to the Goldwing that day, though want to do that next time I am there. Did try another bike that day that should go up in a couple of weeks. Like that one even more than the R18 and that is saying something.
replaced my liked it was totaled with another V Star 650 but this one doesn't have the tour pack you can bet I'm going to put one on though I miss it I watched the review on the Yamaha Venture and the Honda Goldwing and they both have reverse also
Andy tries so hard, every time I go down there, to sell me that new Low Rider. He hints that SMHD will give me very top dollar for Barbie. But, I've only got 60,000 miles on her! She's just barely broke in! I test rode the R1800 the day before I saw you two at the Live Fast Rally, and I must say.....that is one bad ass bike! Unfortunately, there is no way I could ride it for long, as my knees started to lock up sitting that way :-b
What is going on, several years ago I thought that Harley made the move that if you had a Harly dealership you only could sell New Harly's, Am in North Central Ohio and remember when Thiels wheels sold, Honda, Yamaha, Triumph and Harley. Well HD forced them to decide Harley and dump all the others or no deal. Well since at the time HD was a big seller so they dumped the others, well several years passed and they are suffering. So what has changed you can be a multi brand again. As for controls BMW decides what they are going to do, so deal with it, seems to be their issue. Have had 4 BMW's and every one has different hand control items. While back a buddy rode my old R1150RT, well he still has his old Harley but it is regulated for show rides. His everyday workhorse is now the Beemer.

They have Harley, BMW, and Honda. They are a great shop that is expanding to accommodate more of each make. Tell them I said high if you ever stop in. Won’t say much on the RT till that video comes out in about another week or so. 😉 The R18… don’t think it is one I would want to ride regularly. It is a great bike, just not one for me. Kind of how I look at the Road Glide. Great bike, but not a bike for me. Does that make sense?

@@p-dub7422 Where this dealership is located there is nothing else unless you ride into LA, Bakersfield, or up into the Bay area. Since that are independent, several manufactures have partnered with them. It is truly an unique location.
What would the R18 be like for a shorter rider? I haven't seen one in the metal yet. Wondering if it's worth the pretty long journey to the nearest BMW dealer to have a look. I'm 5'6".

howdy .. first and foremost .. thank you for the great videos and content .. just back from the dealership for some re-call work .. been eying that R18 for some time now to add to my collection .. moved it off the kick stand .. NO NO NO .. if you want torque, horsepower and balance .. take a rocket 3 GT (forward controls) for a test ride .. don't worry .. triumphs and HD's play well together .. have a couple of each .. ride safe and be safe ..
I so want to find a Triumph dealership so I can test ride some of theirs. Have heard nothing but good. The only issue I have with several makes I want to test ride is I have have to ride into LA to find them and I hate LA traffic. Drivers there are CRAZY! Test riding different makes has been a cool experience. It has given me a better understanding of different bikes and why people love them like they do. It has also reinforced my love for the bikes I ride. Life is about experiences, and I didn't want to pass this experience up.
I've had an older Beemer and they used to have a HD style indicator. I don't like that they've went with a single switch, I feel they've lost a little character. I guess it frees up space for rider modes and menu buttons though.
I agree. I’m riding a borrowed Suzuki for a short while and the indicators are a single switch. Not my favorite, but I can see the point of taking it. Kind of like a car.
It might also be because most other bikes use a single switch. One complaint my metric buddies always bring up about Harley is the 2 turn signals vs the one switch. Even Harley's new bikes such as the Sportster S are moving to a single turn switch to align with what seems to be more standardized. BMW may be as well.
I really like the retro cruiser look and feel. It has similar power to a Harley touring bike with a Stage 1. Having only sat the one seat… not impressed with the seat. A good or bad, depends on your perspective, there are limits to the options. You can make a Harley want ever you want it is be. The options for the R18 seem to be limited.
Added a Corbin touring seat, totally changed Sable from an 1 hour ride to an all day machine. She's a Classic and it's a wonderful ride, ticks alot of boxes. Been riding 58 years, and the only brand I've not owned is Moto Guzzi. So have a well rounded perspective. You always need more than one ride for the intended purpose, plus the big garage...
They do have windscreens for them and they have a model with one and bags. I haven't ridden one yet. You should have tried the RT next to it too. I think you'd be even more impressed. The new RTs are amazing. I came from a 1600 Nomad, which is a lot like a RK. I looked at Voyager, Vision and HD Ultra before trying a BMW. What I found was that BMW allows longer test rides. With HD, I had a very short one and I had to follow the salesman. With the BMW, they tossed the keys and said have fun. I had to put gas in it to get back. I was sold on it. 250lbs lighter than the Nomad and it does everything better. Congrats to you on being open to it. I find a lot of HD riders won't even entertain the idea of riding something other than a HD or an Indian.
For the 1250RT… keep your eyes open in about 2 weeks. 😉 And the guys in Santa Maria did toss me the keys. 😁😎 It was a fun day while I waited for them to put new tires on Scarlett.
I have an RT and was given an R18 to test ride for a day. I’m surprised that I loved it so much. But the RT is almost perfect- incredible fuel efficiency; hauls a ton of luggage; adjustable wind protection; all the comfort and safety features possible, plus the handling of a sport bike. I just can’t see myself being happy with the R18 given that in several ways it’s a step down from the RT.
@@carguybd I would consider a R18TC if I was getting a two up touring bike. They can be gotten fairly reasonably now. HD has surcharges from the manufacturer now and then there are the dealer convenience fees. I am just not a believer so as to bend over for that. That leaves Indian and Honda. Indians do nothing for me and there's no real provenance. That leaves Honda. Bland, but competent. Right now, my BMW still works and my riding is one up. BMW stopped selling the service manuals, so there's that against and then the problems that their bikes have that they don't take responsibility for. Check out my vid on BMW needs to F Off to understand my POV. Really, I am not tribal. I like the philosophy behind their bikes, but the company has disaffected me.
That’s a neat bike from Beemer , kinda different for them , I would enjoy studying their history some , I think Harley kinda copied one of their designs in WW2 . Thanks for sharing , looks like you had fun 👍
Not used to riding a metric Bike? Your Harley front forks are made in Japan = Metric. Several parts on your Harley are made in China= Metric. Starter Motor=Metric Brakes and Battery = both Metric.
Not looking to buy a bike. I already have the ones I enjoy. Just did the test ride to have a new experience and to learn about a different make of motorcycle. Always good to have new experiences. 👍🏻😎🏍🖤

Nope. Was there at the dealer getting new tires on Scarlett and was playing around on the demo bikes. It was fun to try a different make of bike and a better way to spend my time than sitting on my phone. Ya know?
I hired one for a few days in France. Extraordinarily ordinary performance, due to the weight. BMW setting their sights on Harley is a very low bar. Great handling which is pointless with such a low lean angle. Not a patch on a 1400 Californian.
Which other bike tempted you, I’m kind of new new to Harley, I have been biking sense 96 . I’m hopeful my Harley will be trouble free and fun I bought a 2021 street Bob 114 , have you tried one yet ?

Sorry but I prefer my Electra Glide 2001 whose engine sound is unique and whenever I hear it I fly to the sky, an incredible artistic creation by American experts in the motorcycle world, I thank the Harley company for these moments of fun that it has given me driving my beloved Electra.
I prefer my Road King and Fat Boy. Because I see the beauty in other makes and models does not mean they are a preference. Just seeing why other might like them…
why does a motorcycle should have 1800 cc lol for transporting 2 persons that much power why need if i was there i could modify that motorcycle into a bus and take robin momma and her family too
@@Uniquecapture I can see why you say that, but no. What I was referring to was a bike built that requires metric tools. It’s a term I heard growing up used by most Harley riders that use primarily imperial tools.

I have my R18TC on order. The one I drove before is best described as a luxury tractor. Super smooth throughout the power delivery.
So many people love them for just that reason. Smooth and powerful!

Have seen one here with Highway pegs. Looked a bit odd in the R18, but the point is being comfortable on a long ride. And that is one amazing machine!

BMW makes incredible bikes! While this particular model is not my choice, you can’t go wrong with he BMW. So cool that you tested one out.

I sold my Fatboy and Switchback and bought an R18c, its very good by comparison, but not as nimble as the Switchback, probably not as quick either.
Have not had the pleasure of riding a switchback yet. But it is one opportunity I would not pass up!

I so want to try the Triumph Triple R, but would have to go way to far into LA to do that. LA is not my favorite place to ride.
I did test ride another BMW and that video should be up in a week or so. Now that bike… that one I really liked. 😉😁😎

I learned they do, but the demo didn’t have one. 30mph+ wind and 70mph on the highway… new respect for those that ride naked bikes.
You know, that “reverse” feature is cool. But I think I’d be embarrassed to use it, anywhere but my garage- “Wheeennng…” 😂
Great u had a test ride on the beamer. Reverse gear is cool 😎👍. Yeah naked bike riding with no fairing is wild on the highway, and the boxer motor moving to the left when starting / reving takes a bit to get used to. Heaps of go on that bike and big torque 🏍️👍 Ps if you get a chance, suggest to take a new Goldwing (manual) bagger for a ride where the flat six boxer style motor does not pull to the left to experience the difference.
Didn’t have time to get to the Goldwing that day, though want to do that next time I am there. Did try another bike that day that should go up in a couple of weeks. Like that one even more than the R18 and that is saying something.

No. I did a test ride one a while back though. They are great bikes, but I love my Scarlett too much.
replaced my liked it was totaled with another V Star 650 but this one doesn't have the tour pack you can bet I'm going to put one on though I miss it I watched the review on the Yamaha Venture and the Honda Goldwing and they both have reverse also
I knew the Goldwing had reverse, but didn’t know about the Venture. Cool! Would be helpful in some instances. 👍🏻

I test rode the R1800 the day before I saw you two at the Live Fast Rally, and I must say.....that is one bad ass bike! Unfortunately, there is no way I could ride it for long, as my knees started to lock up sitting that way :-b
What is going on, several years ago I thought that Harley made the move that if you had a Harly dealership you only could sell New Harly's, Am in North Central Ohio and remember when Thiels wheels sold, Honda, Yamaha, Triumph and Harley. Well HD forced them to decide Harley and dump all the others or no deal. Well since at the time HD was a big seller so they dumped the others, well several years passed and they are suffering. So what has changed you can be a multi brand again. As for controls BMW decides what they are going to do, so deal with it, seems to be their issue. Have had 4 BMW's and every one has different hand control items. While back a buddy rode my old R1150RT, well he still has his old Harley but it is regulated for show rides. His everyday workhorse is now the Beemer.

They have Harley, BMW, and Honda. They are a great shop that is expanding to accommodate more of each make. Tell them I said high if you ever stop in.

The R18… don’t think it is one I would want to ride regularly. It is a great bike, just not one for me. Kind of how I look at the Road Glide. Great bike, but not a bike for me. Does that make sense?

@@p-dub7422 Where this dealership is located there is nothing else unless you ride into LA, Bakersfield, or up into the Bay area. Since that are independent, several manufactures have partnered with them. It is truly an unique location.

What would the R18 be like for a shorter rider? I haven't seen one in the metal yet. Wondering if it's worth the pretty long journey to the nearest BMW dealer to have a look. I'm 5'6".
I’m 5’6” and I found it to have a very low center of gravity & well balanced. It is powerful, so be prepared for that.

howdy .. first and foremost .. thank you for the great videos and content .. just back from the dealership for some re-call work .. been eying that R18 for some time now to add to my collection .. moved it off the kick stand .. NO NO NO .. if you want torque, horsepower and balance .. take a rocket 3 GT (forward controls) for a test ride .. don't worry .. triumphs and HD's play well together .. have a couple of each .. ride safe and be safe ..
I so want to find a Triumph dealership so I can test ride some of theirs. Have heard nothing but good. The only issue I have with several makes I want to test ride is I have have to ride into LA to find them and I hate LA traffic. Drivers there are CRAZY!
Test riding different makes has been a cool experience. It has given me a better understanding of different bikes and why people love them like they do. It has also reinforced my love for the bikes I ride.
Life is about experiences, and I didn't want to pass this experience up.
How does the weight feel for you? I’m coming from a Yamaha v star 950 & plan to upgrade soon.
On the R18? The center of gravity is lower than on my Road King. It is a big bike, yet very well balanced. Go try one and see what you think. 👍🏻😎🏍🖤
I've had an older Beemer and they used to have a HD style indicator. I don't like that they've went with a single switch, I feel they've lost a little character. I guess it frees up space for rider modes and menu buttons though.
I agree. I’m riding a borrowed Suzuki for a short while and the indicators are a single switch. Not my favorite, but I can see the point of taking it. Kind of like a car.
It might also be because most other bikes use a single switch. One complaint my metric buddies always bring up about Harley is the 2 turn signals vs the one switch. Even Harley's new bikes such as the Sportster S are moving to a single turn switch to align with what seems to be more standardized. BMW may be as well.

I really like the retro cruiser look and feel. It has similar power to a Harley touring bike with a Stage 1. Having only sat the one seat… not impressed with the seat.
A good or bad, depends on your perspective, there are limits to the options. You can make a Harley want ever you want it is be. The options for the R18 seem to be limited.

Added a Corbin touring seat, totally changed Sable from an 1 hour ride to an all day machine. She's a Classic and it's a wonderful ride, ticks alot of boxes. Been riding 58 years, and the only brand I've not owned is Moto Guzzi. So have a well rounded perspective. You always need more than one ride for the intended purpose, plus the big garage...

I've had Harley's and BMWs...Harley's are nice some model's. But BMW makes better bikes.
But all depends on your choice.
They do have windscreens for them and they have a model with one and bags. I haven't ridden one yet. You should have tried the RT next to it too. I think you'd be even more impressed. The new RTs are amazing. I came from a 1600 Nomad, which is a lot like a RK. I looked at Voyager, Vision and HD Ultra before trying a BMW. What I found was that BMW allows longer test rides. With HD, I had a very short one and I had to follow the salesman. With the BMW, they tossed the keys and said have fun. I had to put gas in it to get back. I was sold on it. 250lbs lighter than the Nomad and it does everything better. Congrats to you on being open to it. I find a lot of HD riders won't even entertain the idea of riding something other than a HD or an Indian.
For the 1250RT… keep your eyes open in about 2 weeks. 😉
And the guys in Santa Maria did toss me the keys. 😁😎 It was a fun day while I waited for them to put new tires on Scarlett.

I have an RT and was given an R18 to test ride for a day. I’m surprised that I loved it so much. But the RT is almost perfect- incredible fuel efficiency; hauls a ton of luggage; adjustable wind protection; all the comfort and safety features possible, plus the handling of a sport bike. I just can’t see myself being happy with the R18 given that in several ways it’s a step down from the RT.
@@carguybd I would consider a R18TC if I was getting a two up touring bike. They can be gotten fairly reasonably now. HD has surcharges from the manufacturer now and then there are the dealer convenience fees. I am just not a believer so as to bend over for that. That leaves Indian and Honda. Indians do nothing for me and there's no real provenance. That leaves Honda. Bland, but competent. Right now, my BMW still works and my riding is one up. BMW stopped selling the service manuals, so there's that against and then the problems that their bikes have that they don't take responsibility for. Check out my vid on BMW needs to F Off to understand my POV. Really, I am not tribal. I like the philosophy behind their bikes, but the company has disaffected me.

Not used to riding a metric Bike? Your Harley front forks are made in Japan = Metric. Several parts on your Harley are made in China= Metric. Starter Motor=Metric Brakes and Battery = both Metric.
Many of the controls are set up differently on a Harley. Had to think (or look for) the controls on the BMW.
Save some dough get a guzzi eldorado audace or california depending on how you use the bike.
Not looking to buy a bike. I already have the ones I enjoy. Just did the test ride to have a new experience and to learn about a different make of motorcycle. Always good to have new experiences. 👍🏻😎🏍🖤

That's the issue with owning a Guzzi. Dealers are few and far between. Owning one is kind of a commitment lol.

Nope. Was there at the dealer getting new tires on Scarlett and was playing around on the demo bikes. It was fun to try a different make of bike and a better way to spend my time than sitting on my phone. Ya know?

I hired one for a few days in France. Extraordinarily ordinary performance, due to the weight. BMW setting their sights on Harley is a very low bar. Great handling which is pointless with such a low lean angle. Not a patch on a 1400 Californian.

I was very impressed by the R18. Powerful, classic, easy to ride. Though to be truthful, one of the other bikes would be more tempting to me.

Sorry but I prefer my Electra Glide 2001 whose engine sound is unique and whenever I hear it I fly to the sky, an incredible artistic creation by American experts in the motorcycle world, I thank the Harley company for these moments of fun that it has given me driving my beloved Electra.
I prefer my Road King and Fat Boy. Because I see the beauty in other makes and models does not mean they are a preference. Just seeing why other might like them…
