I love the idea that UA-cam support can't wrap their head around people _not_ concerned with getting as many views as possible. Like they can't parse the idea of someone making content for any other reason other than to get as much engagement as possible.

I completely agree with everything you said about blaming the algorithm being a cope. UA-cam has always used a pretty standard metric to promote your video: PEOPLE. If people wanna watch your video, they will. So if you made an uninteresting video, it will get less views. There are obviously other factors such as sub count, thumbnail, title, etc but I feel like frustrated UA-camrs who want more eyes on their stuff don't seem to be willing to improve the quality of their future videos and instead will gravitate towards trying to improve the way they market them. UA-cam culture has unfortunately become so focused on promoting a video that they forgot that making a good video is just as important, if not more so. I'm happy to see someone finally acknowledging this, and someone in the TF2 community to boot.

To be fair, marketting gets way more instant short term results and is something that applies to a lot of things.
It's like with video games pursuing realistic graphics instead of solid gameplay. One is easier to market to a broader audience then the other.

It's not cope, it's basic site functionality: New people do not watch videos that UA-cam does not put in front of them. How much it snowballs from there is up to the video, but that first push is entirely out of your control.

Forgot to clarify, for the links present at 8:36, they don't work. Even after quadruple checking I was on the appropriate account, I still wasn't given perms to see the analytics they sent. This is why I posited two separate situations (and subsequent debunkings) rather than just guess at which one they were refering to. I had to rely solely on context clues to figure out what they meant, but on either side of the coin, something is still very, very off.

What I'm curious about is whether the stats shown to Weezy are the same ones used for any algorithm stuff, or if the algorithm uses proper 24-hours-from-time-of-upload stats, and the creator dashboard just does the lazy calculation. Giving UA-cam the benefit of the doubt it would explain why support saw nothing out of the ordinary--they were looking at the unskewed stats.

    • @theftking

This is actually a terrible time to post a video. That's midnight on the west coast of the US, 3AM dead hour on the east coast, and 9AM "get ready for work" hour in Europe. _Almost none of the English speaking audience is on UA-cam at that time!_
My lowest view counts in a 24 hour cycle are _always_ between 2am-4am eastern (11pm-1am west coast).
I'm really skeptical of a lot of the claims/advice being thrown around in these comments.
I also regularly see other channels drop videos in the dead of night, right before midnight PST (the worst possible time according to this theory) that go on to do crazy views.
UA-cam analytics constantly attempt to account for how long a video has been out, and I find it really hard to believe the algorithm itself wouldn't do the same thing. Cash rules everything around it; whatever videos generate the most revenue for google get promoted.

Wait though, if this really was the fault of a daily computational error on UA-cam's end, then how is it that not a single youtuber you talked to had seen the same thing? I've seen a lot of "minute before midnight" uploads, and not to mention the fact that probably thousands of videos are uploaded to this site daily. It feels like this is an issue that, by its hypothetical nature, should have occurred to others before.
I'm not a creator, and maybe I misunderstood something here, but it doesn't line up in my head.

    • @BigBuckies
      @BigBuckies Рік тому +9

I'm no creator either, but my guess is just that the sample size was too small, it's entirely possible someone has encountered this issue before, just not anyone he's talked to, although I've personally never seen any youtubers I watch encounter this before, and my only guess for that is they just chalk it up to the algorithm or other factors and don't really research it like weezy has, but that does seem kinda lacking so it's still a weird issue even with the small sample size idea in mind

    • @lukewebb604
      @lukewebb604 Рік тому

It wouldn't surprise me if there was some other programming weirdness going on here too. Using a "days" even if a video has been uploaded 2 minutes before the day ends is so stupid is something that will have been noticed and fixed years ago.
But perhaps a system update rolled out that midnight? Perhaps some system was scheduled to reset at that time? A financial report was due to be written up at midnight that month and that was the new algorithm's start point?
Something like that seems like the sort of weirdness that wouldn't be caught in standard testing.

    Wikipedia - Chair
One of the basic pieces of furniture, a chair is a type of seat. Its primary features are two pieces of a durable material, attached as back and seat to one another at a 90° or slightly greater angle, with usually the four corners of the horizontal seat attached in turn to four legs-or other parts of the seat's underside attached to three legs or to a shaft about which a four-arm turnstile on rollers can turn-strong enough to support the weight of a person who sits on the seat (usually wide and broad enough to hold the lower body from the buttocks almost to the knees) and leans against the vertical back (usually high and wide enough to support the back to the shoulder blades). The legs are typically high enough for the seated person's thighs and knees to form a 90° or lesser angle.[1][2] Used in a number of rooms in homes (e.g. in living rooms, dining rooms, and dens), in schools and offices (with desks), and in various other workplaces, chairs may be made of wood, metal, or synthetic materials, and either the seat alone or the entire chair may be padded or upholstered in various colors and fabrics.
Chairs vary in design. An armchair has armrests fixed to the seat;[3] a recliner is upholstered and under its seat is a mechanism that allows one to lower the chair's back and raise into place a fold-out footrest;[4] a rocking chair has legs fixed to two long curved slats; a wheelchair has wheels fixed to an axis under the seat.[5]
    Etymology
Chair comes from the early 13th-century English word chaere, from Old French chaiere ("chair, seat, throne"), from Latin cathedra ("seat").[6]
    History
Main article: History of the chair
Five three-legged chairs around a low-legged table from Sliven 19th Century Lifestyle Museum
Early 20th-century armchair made in eastern Australia, with strong heraldic embellishment
The chair has been used since antiquity, although for many centuries it was a symbolic article of state and dignity rather than an article for ordinary use. "The chair" is still used as the emblem of authority in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom[7] and Canada,[8] and in many other settings. In keeping with this historical connotation of the "chair" as the symbol of authority, committees, boards of directors, and academic departments all have a 'chairman' or 'chair'.[9] Endowed professorships are referred to as chairs.[10] It was not until the 16th century that chairs became common.[11] Until then, people sat on chests, benches, and stools, which were the ordinary seats of everyday life. The number of chairs which have survived from an earlier date is exceedingly limited; most examples are of ecclesiastical, seigneurial or feudal origin.[citation needed]
Chairs were in existence since at least the Early Dynastic Period of Egypt (c. 3100 BC). They were covered with cloth or leather, were made of carved wood, and were much lower than today's chairs - chair seats were sometimes only 10 inches (25 cm) high.[12] In ancient Egypt chairs appear to have been of great richness and splendor. Fashioned of ebony and ivory, or of carved and gilded wood, they were covered with costly materials, magnificent patterns and supported upon representations of the legs of beasts or the figures of captives. Generally speaking, the higher ranked an individual was, the taller and more sumptuous was the chair he sat on and the greater the honor. On state occasions the pharaoh sat on a throne, often with a little footstool in front of it.[13]
The average Egyptian family seldom had chairs, and if they did, it was usually only the master of the household who sat on a chair. Among the better off, the chairs might be painted to look like the ornate inlaid and carved chairs of the rich, but the craftsmanship was usually poor.[12]

Giving good reason why, even in those first few minutes, the non-subscriber to subscriber rate was so astronomically different. I would assume that in the first 2 or so days within the release of a massively hyped update, people who saw an mvm video posted 2 minutes ago would be less likely to click on it compared to one of their favorite youtubers like thebutt89 or monkey giving their first impressions on the new maps and taunts. people want something fresh, and mvm really hasn’t received that in almost 10 years now since the two cities update.

I make GMod animations based around TF2. While there are plenty of other great animators who make similar content (Eltorro64Rus, Crazyscout Fin, STBlack, along with the whole SFM community and countless others). I still have managed to carve out a niche for myself. Luckily animation is a great way to make yourself unique, as you can come up with truly crazy and unique ideas that no one else has made yet. I've blamed the algorithm my fair share, especially with how unforgiving it can be when you are first starting out, but I feel more comfortable now that I have settled into a niche and people keep coming back; I feel like I have "mastered" it. I am 100% aware of the "supply and demand" stuff as well.
I think the one thing aspiring creators trip up on is that they feel like people will WANT to watch their content just because they feel like it is good. Kinda like "I am the main character". Some might operate like they are in a vacuum and while that sometimes works, it means you won't be in the prime position to take advantage of the overall "market". Especially with "easier/quicker" to make content like TF2 funny moments and montages, it REALLY hard to make space for yourself unless you bring something truly original and novel to the table.

Late to the party apparently, but this sounds a lot more like UA-cam was responding with automatic canned responses after seeing keywords in the messages. The fact that the second email came back with the same wording, and that they only looked at a "canned" 28 day period instead of doing any more "reasonable" digging, makes it fairly obvious that it wasn't a person behind that investigation, just an algorithm telling you why your algorithm was 'normal'. While there might be more context in the twitter messages that I didn't pay attention to, the verbal description of the messages almost immediately made me think it was a bot talking to you, and the later stuff just sealed it.

  • @durablewatermark

Small note on the algorithm: It is highly unlikely (though I don’t know for sure) that there is anyone actually programming it. CGP Grey did a video explaining this better than I ever could, but the tl;dr is that it is far too complex for anyone to actually really code or “understand”, and that it works simply because it tests itself against massive amounts of data, and when it gets things right those changes stick around. It’s like evolution. It isn’t intelligent decision making, it is survival of the random adaptations that pass the test. (Captchas are a good example of a “test”, though I am unsure how UA-cam sculpts theirs) And clearly, it does work most of the time.

I had a theory for a long time that UA-cam's algortithm favored TikToks since they've introduced their Shorts program. I tested it with a Shorts that got just under 3,000 views within 2 days of it being uploaded, but then it dropped out of absolutely nowhere on the third day. Perhaps its because I called Reddit a site full of... um.. EDP fans, if you catch my drift... but the views I was getting just stopped out of nowhere. It wasn't claimed, or (visibly) age restricted, the views just dropped out of literally nowhere with no explanation.
The weird part for me is that most of my other videos don't get anything like that, they don't get traction to fall off in the first place. I have some content with a couple hundred, and I think two or three videos with over 1,000 views. But for the most part my videos will get few dozen views at max. My new theory aligns more with yours, that the algorithm actually favors if the video is more original or not. It just so happens that my most viewed videos are unique, so perhaps that's the real reason why they got promoted.

I'm a tiny creator but I've had this happen on a few of my my videos too. For some it makes sense because they are about me so would only make sense if you know who I am, but for most they are just regular videos just like everything else I make, getting few impressions despite good looking click through rates and watch time percentages. I agree that complaining about the algorithm is a waste of time better spent making your content actually better, but having a video you spent days working hard on not get seen through seemingly no fault of your own is pretty damn disheartening. Happy to see one of the "real" creators I follow talk about it, though I have no clue what to do about it. I don't think any of my videos were post close to midnight PST so I'm not sure if it's the same cause. But thanks for talking about this, I like to see behind the curtain, so to speak, really useful stuff.

I've... never seen those things people say about the algorithm as any sort of actual blame, more as just a joke about random videos going viral like memes on a channel that's never gone above 400 views or an old thing that you never put any effort into. I don't think I've heard a single person say anything about the algorithm when it comes to bad performances actually.

Tbf youtube does have an internal weighting system for different tags (this was a long time ago tho). They do this to promote certain kinds of content over others, probably to help shift the kinda content they think will attract more watchers to the platform. Like if they want to court more of a demographic, they'll boost content that demographic tends to watch. Especially if that demographic tends to click on ads.
A recent blatant example was when shorts were introduced, they heavily weighted recommendations for it to make the system popular and get users used to it (and hopefully attract younger audiences).
This is all big picture stuff tho, and not really something an individual creator can change because their niche as a whole will be affected.
However, if youtube has introduced machine learning AI, that could change things. As those do pick up bias, then reinforce it. Like instead of humans naturally clicking on a soyface thumbnail, it could have learned to search for those thumbnail styles to recommend in the first place, rather than waiting for users to do it organically.

It's one of those things where if feels like there are times UA-cam hasn't fucked up and people are just not wanting to take responsibility for their own issues, but it feels like when UA-cam DOES fuck up, they fuck up HARD.
Good example is Balena Productions, who does Sonic animations. Despite the fact that they can sometimes have some touchy subjects and some adult content (just look at his GMod ragdoll video parody series, Sonic Zombies), a lot of his videos have been marked by youtube, not Balena, as "made for kids" fucking up his channel
He has fought them tooth and nail, pointing out example after example of things in his videos that should disqualify them from being made for kids, even putting viewer discretion warnings at the beginning, and UA-cam just held firm that they were made for kids and nothing he could do about it. Even worse, they say it was manually reviewed, but it seems whoever is "manually reviewing" the vid - if someone even is - just sees Sonic and animation and groups it in with shit like a Baby Shark video. It's to the point he just announced he's stepping away from videos because of how badly this is affecting his channel, and UA-cam refuses to listen to him about the issue.
