Are PRS SE's Still Considered "Entry-Level"? The DGT may change your opinion!

  • Paul Reed Smith's affordable SE line has been blurring the line between "beginner" and "professional" guitars for a few years, now. The recent additions of the McCarty, Paul's Guitar and now, the DGT to the SE series solidifies the line as a great option for seasoned guitarists who want to upsize their collections for more variety of tone and feel.
The DGT includes a unique neck profile, quite different from all others in the PRS family. Many consider it a "goldilocks" carve - a perfect blend of modern shred and vintage chunk. The pickups are standouts in the SE line as well, as you'll hear. This guitar creates joyful noises through a clean amp, a metal amp, and everything in between. We don't think you'll find a better guitar (or anything close) under $900.

Great playing and great demo! I got one a few months ago. At first I wasn’t used to the big frets. Now I want them on all my guitars!

I wouldnt consider the PRS SE DGT or really any recent SE guitars as entry level, as they can pretty well stand on there own in most settings.
I have seen interviews with Paul saying, that he wants the SE to be a professional guitar with an affordable price tag, imho they have now achieved this

I own several Core PRS guitars as well as a SE DGT and a SE Custom 24 Quilt. The SE DGT and SE Custom 24 Quilt both play very well, sound fantastic and look amazing…for less than a third of the cost of my Core models.

I put a deposit to move a gold top se dgt to a different store here in Uk... didn't like the neck felt too dry ...
I decided to order another one ... same specs... i think the pick ups are superb ... the second one "spoke" to me ... i must admit i'm not a rosewood person but it's sooo inspiring ...
The second one was perfect straight from the box .. i owned few se's ...an s2 and have a ce24 but i'm seriously considering letting the ce24 go ... prs are not always perfect though no matter what level u pick ... sometimes they feel a bit souless ... yes amazing looks n playability ...perfect for session men ... with the dgt se i think u see the impact of Paul Grissom's vision .. i'm really impressed and finally found the Prs that will always stay with me ... maybe one day i'll try the 4k one just to see what is like ...
I think the gold se has a fab finish and the qc was spot on unlike the first one ... the fretboard felt like Sahara desert.... i'm getting used to the open pore vibe of rosewood ... to me the money went on them incredible low output pick ups....
    LOVE ME DGT ahaha

Hi! Thanks for this video this guitar is clearly great! I think I'll buy a PRS soon. I used to play blues and rock n'roll on a Les Paul but for 4 hours long shows it's a little bit heavy. My question is for old blues and Rock n'roll between this PRS SE DGT and PRS SE CUSTOM 24 08 ERIZA VERDE (very versatile) which one is better for vintage tones? Thank you again from France!

No they were never meant to be. They are pretty expensive. Most are $1000 in the USA. Beginner range is usually 100-500, then 500-800 are your mid level. 800-1500 is like intermediate. And lets not forget Paul Smith himself said many times the SE are an instrument meant to have the rest of your life and plays great. They are the same spec except for 3 things vs the 3000-6000 Maryland made PRS, therefore fitting the price point of being almost as nice as a USA PRS but being a third the price. Its was never meant to be entry level...

Lets also not forget $1000 is still a good amount of money for a chunk of styled wood with some simple electronics....even in 2023....credit inflation made these guitars outrageous in the USA
