K-rations were in wax covered cardboard boxes, pocket-sized ( big pocket ) with small tin cans of spaghetti and meatballs w/ tomato sauce, spam and other products made by Chef Boy r dee ( the small pull top cans you find on the shelf nowadays), crackers, a tin of cheese, wooden spoon, matches, coffee and cigarettes. It was opened by using a bayonet or your fingers. You could burn the box for a smokeless fire. C-rations were just regular tin cans of soups, spaghetti, hash and crackers.
When I was in the Corps back in the early 80s when mre's were first issued we used the crackers to hammer nails into 2x4s because they were so hard. You had to soak them in a canteen cup full of water before you could break them

I’m from Switzerland and I served in the Swiss 10th mountain reserves 7 years ago. My unit specialized in alpine combat. I was trained heavily on winter combat on ski’s. Ever since I was 10 I have been competing in biathlon shooting. I’m starting to get off topic but I remember having an MRE for the first time. I almost threw up because I was so disgusted by it.
I got to shoot my first PCC and semi auto rifle yesterday! An ar15 9mm and a SIG mcx! Can’t wait to leave Massachusetts so I can actually shoot more often.
You can shoot plenty in MA dude. Go to a good gun shop and learn the laws. We actually have much less restrictions than you think as well as many not enforced guidelines. You can buy an mcx, mpx, scar, tavor, MDR, acr, scorpion Evo, and so on and so on. As well as ARs and Aks personal transfer.
Had my first experience with the MRE package in 2003 during a military skills event in Germany organised by a US forces unit in Bad Aibling. As swiss army we don't have them. Ate it, not bad, thanks to the kind help by a gentle specialist of the US Army who most probably avoided us getting badly scalded or hurt. Finished eating, turn the next corner and there is the finish line. 20 metres after that line there was a 3 metre long barbecue with a ton of stuff cooking on it.
I actually found my love for hot sauce from the tiny bottles of Tabasco that were included in the MRE's of the 90's. The food wasn't hot,..but it tasted like it was!
I know I'm a weirdo, but I love these things. I've only ever had a couple that I didn't like... one was the pack of tuna. Hell, I even liked the veggie burger patty one... shocking as it sounds.
We had a guy in my unit in Djibouti that loved the veggie omelet. When asked he responded with "I shouldn't like this but it is my favorite. I know, I'm weird."
Man I loved em! Had sea rats in the early 80’s and my first MRE during the fist Gulf War. The best Is the Rice And Meatballs. With the addition of the tiny Tobacco sauce bottle I was eat better than home! Of course we had to heat it, if you wanted to, with a not included separate source. Man I would love to taste that again. Oh almost forgot Chicken Al King-soooooo good!
I remember when those things came out, they were horrible. The freeze dried strawberries weren't bad but the freeze dried hamburger was basically cardboard. Good times, Good times. LOL
Was at the end of c-rats and the beginning of MRE's, my favorite was the dehydrated pork or beef patties, you could just chew on them like dry beef jerky.

You can also heat it the LEO way. When you check your oil at the beginning of your shift, put your entree on your intake manifold. At lunch time take it out and eat.
We used to buy and stock surplus C-rations at deer camp They were 20 to 30 years old at the time. I never minded eating them. I used to have a military can opener on my key ring, P-38. With a little practice I could get a can open as fast as a regular manual can opener.
MREs are quite good. I got a huge box and thought most things were not bad.
When I was in the Military, my favorite MRE's were the ones with the cranberries in them. Made a lot of trade offs with other guys and girls in the Military to get the MRE's with the cranberries in them. I loved those cranberries. The bread in the MRE was also good.
Cranberries?
You must be one of those new Nintendo generation warriors. 🤔🤷♂️
Raisins, cranberries, whatever. Don’t act like you are superior.
@@vincedibona4687 Huh ? Don't act like I am superior ?
How was or am I doing that ?
Was trading with others on what we like or don't like. And what with others what they like or don't like.
What was or is wrong with that ?
3:10 and for that brief moment... he was back..
We had a hot breakfast And then issued 2 MREs, one for each cargo pocket. That was standard issue during the Gulf War and Panama. Ours at first didn’t have the heaters and everything was dehydrated
It's pretty cool to see you guys do a MRE video. I do some reviews myself. It's always fun to get a first timers opinion. In general MREs are better than most people would realize.
I used to swap British ration packs to the yanks because they liked the British better than their own . Ex British army chef. And the British army name's brands in today's ration packs.
I gave them some British rations to try some time ago. :)
not to mention your ration packs are HUGE (24hr. packs)
JUMPING JIMINY, DO NOT POUR THE HEATER WATER INTO THE DRINK MIX!
You guys should invite MRE Steve to the range since you're doing his shtick now. 😎
Let’s get this Kalashnikov onto a tray.
@@boomerkobold3943 Nice!
Gotta pour more water in from the start. I submerged the heater element about half-way and it stayed warm for about 30ish minutes. my meal pouches came out dripping and evenly warmed
You guys should do more MRE videos ! Me and my friends just tried some for the first time and they are awesome!
Mmmmm, the days of Chicken Fajitas. Beef Stew was good, some of the breakfast ones were...not. Some of you guys know what I'm talkin' about: jalapeno cheddar to stop up the faucet and Tabasco to start it up, y'kno wut I mean?
The omlete was my fav. I pretty much got one every day because everyone wanted to trade theirs.
Never had an MRE before. We had C-rations. Cold spaghetti and a little tobasco was the bomb in the field.
Man they are not that bad. I lived off of them after hurricane Katrina. But I don't want any more lol
MRE vs. starving? MREs are great!
MRE vs. this bologna sandwich I can make right now? Gimme some bologna!
Did the same after Hurricane Ike. Will fill you up on one end and clean you on the other...lol.
@@TheNutriarat you got that right. I learned quick to stay away from the clam chowder.
I did the same, after Katrina and Ike. Then, 10 years after the latter, I lived on MREs again in basic training.
They get old fast.
You had to soak them in a canteen cup full of water before you could break them
I used to stick the heaters under my plate carrier and it would burn my chest but at least I wouldn't freeze lol
You serious Eric? Your MREs have all the good stuff? I remember my number 3 beef stew coming with nothing.
👍
Yeah these aren't the good old issued ones, these are custom menus.
Anyone remember 'Ranger Pudding'? or 'Chicken ala King' aka 'A bag of maggots'? Good times...
Corn beef hash before the heaters
Omelette with ham, ham slice, beef frankfurters(4 fingers of death). I remember being in Marine school of infantry in 1997 getting MREs with M&Ms that said support the 1992 Olympics.
Chad M was the chocolate white and listed as milk chocolate?
@@michaeljohnston4117 lol yes milk chocolate but white and powdery. Was so hungry ate it anyway.
Maple nut cake was the bomb. When I was an Opfor member in the 1990's I carried a bottle of Tabasco sauce and also a propane stove. No ration heaters and our beverage bag was called a canteen cup. Shoutout to Steve1989
What an improvement. My first MRE was dehydrated sausage patty. Image a sausage flavored rice cake. Back in the day they didn't come with heaters either.
What I never understood is why MRE'S are so expensive on the civilian Market. I have Totes FILLED with rations from my National Guard unit. They make it RAIN MRE'S.
tax dollars hard at work lol
Same from the reserves, we had some cases that were about to "expire" and needed to DX so some of us left that day with 2 or 3 cases
I know, it's stupid. After Katrina everyone down here in the south had totes of them. Now, you can't even find them, and if you do they're $10-20 per.
@@ChadmasterDante
My bro came back from his unit with 4 cases.
Maximus Joseppi it’s mostly an anti gun parents thing
@@piggyharris7988 just move away from them man, you got this
Great video! No tobacco sauce? That was necessary for some of the meals! Cheese spread was currency in the field!
Tobacco sauce?
Rayota heard it kicks like a mule
During the gulf war they had m&m packets like they were off the store room shelf in the mre
I know I'm a weirdo, but I love these things. I've only ever had a couple that I didn't like... one was the pack of tuna. Hell, I even liked the veggie burger patty one... shocking as it sounds.
funkyzero yeh the burger came with bbq sauce and that funky bread slices that remind me of naan Indian bread.
Hahaha lol yes, you are rare. Not many people love them lol
If that would have been the veggie omelet. He never would have eaten another MRE again. Lol
Dude for real
Vomlet.
We had a guy in my unit in Djibouti that loved the veggie omelet. When asked he responded with "I shouldn't like this but it is my favorite. I know, I'm weird."
It was omelette with ham back in the 90's, we'd end up with boxes of nothing but omelette with ham.
So... take point or Omlett with ham? Plenty of fights broke out to take point.
You can tell you guys are best friends 😂 I love watching your videos been watching them since you and berry started the top5 and grips !
That’s not coffee... that’s “stay awake chaw”
I remember when those things came out, they were horrible. The freeze dried strawberries weren't bad but the freeze dried hamburger was basically cardboard. Good times, Good times. LOL
Strawberries were way better than the apples or peaches. Cocoa powder was great, too.
The freeze dried pork patty was nasty....
You have to rehydrate them. lol.
Strawberries with the non dairy creamer
I'm surprised we didn't hear "Let's get this out onto a tray... nice...." :D
Think that creamer spread is suppose to be a butter or margarine spread for the breads
Was at the end of c-rats and the beginning of MRE's, my favorite was the dehydrated pork or beef patties, you could just chew on them like dry beef jerky.
That’s funny M&M where developed for the military rations in WW 2. Now you can not call there name.
The military ones with the U.S. property mark still have the name brand ones!
"All this stuffs gotta come out" yea right😂
Let's get this on to a tray...... NICE!
I literally watched all his old war ration videos bcuz it had so much nastalgia! And made u think back to what it was like being at war.. Steve1989
Richard Badish *nostalgia
since I live in a region where the weather likes to make it hard to get around in the winter, I always have a case of MRE's for the heavy no power snow days.
Man, this video has got me fiending for the pound cake. That stuff was killer.
Lemon poppy pound cake was my jam man
Those things will definitely bind you up if you don't drink lots of water. It may be intentional.
It *is very intentional*
Shitting in the field sucks
It was designed that way on purpose. You can't do your job if you're shitting all the time.
Its a part of the military most dont see, fun vid
john m unfortunately it’s peace time, this is part of the military not many military see these days, I myself have had a few too many haha
Welcome to 31 minutes of chad eating his first MRE. This is so fun.
your dairy spread is issued in Australian MREs,we call it condensed milk, great with rice and jelly, or coffee if you like it real sweet.
when you heat up the main entree, enclose the peanut butter or cheese spread, something like those, with the heater
