Depression is a severely impaired amglyda and hippocampus. They both had it, both them had bad judgement. Depression is not just sadness, it Is irrabilty, forgetfulness, anger , mania, being flat emotionally and nearly impossible to remember things correctly and you can never pinpoint where all the pain is coming from. It's a form of psychosis. In the end everybody dies and nobody is special. We all die alone in a coffin or cremeated. Or just found by accident. Theres a lot to unpack with this case. My sister actually went to high school with her and Michelle had a lot of problems. From what I hear she was a very nice girl and then all of a sudden she started to change. She got pretty unstable and was one of those people that at the drop of a hat would stop being nice and just turn really mean. I came to find out much later that the timing actually lines up with when she stopped trying to talk him out of the suicide. I don't think she was trying to help him go peacefully, but I do think the stress of talking a friend/boyfriend out of suicide for two straight years piled on top of her pre-existing mental health problems drove her off the deep end. I only really met her once when I shadowed at the KPHS before deciding to go to a catholic school nearby, but she seemed so nice. It was such a shock when I was taking a legal procedures elective in high school and we followed the case and I heard all the arguments. My sister was in shock when she heard some of that stuff, especially the texts. She never though Michelle could say that kind of stuff.
I think the judge did a really great job with his explanation of the verdict, because he said(and I'm paraphrasing here) 'that yes she had the freedom of speech to say things like she did and she was not obligated by law to report his behavior and words to anyone(though morally that's a whole other story) but she became culpable when he got out of the car and told her he wasn't going to do it and she told him to get back in the car. The moment she told him to get back in the car and he said okay that he would, she had the obligation to report the situation.'
I also know Sheriff Hodgson(it's a pretty small area, most people know each other) and if he testified favorable of Michelle Carter then I trust his word. He is not the type to let someone off easy, but he does believe in mental health rehabilitation and if he thinks she needed that and not jail time, that could be a reason he testified like he did.
      (edit for grammar)

She was a teenage girl at the cusp of her power (youthful, feminine, sexual, social powers) and in understanding this power, she wanted more. Manipulating the young man was one way of feeding her need and what better way to gain the pinnacle of power - public sympathy/adoration - but to take or give life?

I was watching the documentary, they didn't have a clue that he was depressed and suicidal, he never told them. They realized he was having a hard time because the parents got divorced when he was in HS, and his grades started to slip. They thought that he was just having a hard time adjusting to his parents being divorced. They did take him to psychiatrists and therapies. But not for suicide (Since it never occurred to them he's feeling that way). The parents thought he was doing better weeks nearing his suicide. He graduated from HS, he got his captain's license, and he'd be joining the family business, it seemed like, he was happy and ready for the future. Also, they didn't even know he's dating this person to begin with (they only met 5 times in real life for the past 2 years, lived an hour away and almost 100% of their relationship was online). They only knew he and Michelle texted all the time (but didn't know the extent of their relationship).

My sister went to school with Michelle and she said you never would have known she spent two whole years talking someone out of suicide, but when she snapped and let him know he should just do it already, that kind of attitude was not just aimed at him. She was fine one minute and completely turning on people the next. She would drink like it was the end of the world at parties and people worried she'd be another Taylor Meyer. I am in no way excusing what happened, I am just saying that they both needed help and their friendship was volatile. It was only a matter of time before something horrible happened.
