What's it Like for a Foreigner LIVING in QUERÉTARO MEXICO? | Daily Life in Querétaro, Mexico!

- Living in Querétaro Mexico is a new experience for me. In this video, I share my daily life in Querétaro Mexico as I go to the bank, do some shopping at the local market and get my hair cut. I'm providing the costs for everything I do during the day and try to provide as much information on the experience to help you understand what living in Santiago de Querétaro is like for me.
Of course, like living anywhere in the world - life itself, my experiences are my own and someone else might have a different experience. For this reason I chose to record three activities that I think most people will do during a typical stay.
I've only been living in Queretaro Mexico for a few weeks now, and this video was filmed during my second week here.

Dude that whole interaction/scene with the old butcher around 10:00 blew me away. The man's kindness, his teaching you a few Spanish words, and the price and quality of the meat. 🤯🔥
Yeah, it's cool like that. Really, the only downside so far has been some of the arrogant foreigners.
That's how it's done. You just get out there with your daily activities and use what Spanish you can and keep building on it. Not all natives speak perfect Spanish either! And many speak fast, and with different dialects. They will appreciate and respect you for trying. I applaud "Jose Luis" for being the gentleman he is and helping you learn. Very kind. Best advice a teacher told me was--don't be afraid to make mistakes--get comfortable saying anything and if you screw it up, you'll learn for the next time. When I first started learning I immersed myself in Spanish TV and/or music to acclimate myself to hearing words. From there I just kept learning/using and building. Enjoy the experience!
Thank you. I was back in to see Jose yesterday and he continues to teach me. It's great. I thanked him and he replied "tu amigo."
Thank you for showing the daily life - Queretaro is my five year plan, I love to see the streets and the markets. I hope that you are enjoying it.
You're welcome! There will be more daily life style videos, hopefully you follow along and subscribe 🙂
Hey everyone, I'm planning on doing a Q&A type video as a way to connect better with those of you who've been watching my videos and have been supportive of what I'm doing.
If you have a question you'd like to ask about canoe building, wilderness camping, life in Mexico, or photography and video creation, head over to the channel and leave it as a comment under the post in the community tab ua-cam.com/users/JasonEkecommunity Thanks for watching! 😁
Glad to see you smiling
My haircuts in Puerto Vallarta were a whopping 85 pesos, about $6.50 CDN, and they were excellent, beard included, and neck shave with a straight razor, and with tip about 100 pesos.
Had a cut in PV too.
I like the way the smile get easier in your face, more often. It seems your are adapting much faster to the city, a new life experience
Thank you
Great video Jason, thanks for sharing.
You bet. Thanks for watching.
Really good and helpful video.
If you go into the neighborhoods, you can find a haircut for 50 pesos. One of the ways I practiced Spanish was to construct whole sentences related to the task beforehand, e.g., Can I make an appointment for a haircut; How much is a haircut? Do you have enough change for 200 pesos? Do you have time to cut my hair? I'm not fluent by any stretch, but over time I've become more confident is everyday situations and short conversations. I won't be conversing about Nietzsche, though....
Thanks, great suggestions. I definitely should do this. I actually also just bought a couple spanish children's books to read. Every little bit helps.
This is fascinating! Great stuff! I gotta say, I think I'm liking this more than the Algonquin trips. :)
Glad to hear it! It's definitely different from the canoe trips but I also think it's very fascinating. It's great to be in a different culture and exploring life in a different way.
That said, I'm still looking forward to the next canoe trip.
10:52 Dude! That guy was SO nice! Trying to teach Spanish to him! 😊
My town!, it's a nice city to live
A very nice city.
Planning a visit or moving to Mexico? Check out the Mexico Travel Journal amzn.to/3nTOSJO The Mexico Travel Journal is a small Journal Notebook I created for people planning to spend time in Mexico. More than just a journal notebook, the Mexico Travel Journal contains important information on travelling in Mexico like Tourist Card Requirements and limitations, Entering Mexico by Land and Driving Tips, as well as important Safety Tips. The Journal section contains a daily planner and a daily notes page with enough space for travel of up to 45 days. The Mexico Travel Journal also a valuable spanish phrase section with over 250 commonly used phrases to help you in your journey. Since Mexico is a country that uses the Metric system, I've also included several Metric to Imperial conversion charts for easy reference.
Spanish will come naturally its normal in 3 months you will start communicating no problem, I love Queretaro my Husband and I we are thinking of moving there. I am Mexican he is American :)
Thanks, good to see what the day to day life is like.
You bet. Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed that again Jason. I'm slowly catching up with all your vids from down there. You'll be happy to know my local river (Humber in Toronto) is still well iced over! No problem though. My kayak is pretty much iced over too, though it's starting to thaw a little. Keep the vids coming.
A few more months and everything will be thawed out. I'm looking forward to it too and have a nice trip planned for mid May.
It's actually kinda funny I had a woman just chop off all my hair after I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she was here in the states and spoke English. Ya, just depends on if they are good or just willing to listen.
Yeah, for sure. Actually I've become addicted to getting my haircut in different shops now. 😂 It just won't grow fast enough
Thanks spelling out prices...suggest..I carry a small book tablet it records my costs..if possible not repeat or hear the cost I have the clerk write down price..useful for directions been said..then use the translator app to communicate further on my own..it helps nice to read later to recall a meeting
Thanks
I order my groceries from La Comer for home delivery. I have met some very nice people here, but I am an extrovert, and I love nice people. ATMs can be difficult at many places, and I speak both languages.
I always take out the max, so I do not have to go so often, and my USA bank refunds the ATM transactions.
I had 2 years of Spanish 50 years ago, sorry I dont remember alot of it now.love the market! Alot of rv lifers go to Mexico for the cheap prices on dental work.
Nice video, hope to see more...😊
Thank you, just subscribe and hit that bell and there will be more to come 😀
Hello Jason. Thanks for the informative tour! I’ve just recently arrived in Querataro and am planning to stay here. I have only been here for 2 days so far and have mostly explored Centro. I get lost frequently too :). I’ve been in Mexico for about 12 days now - from Ontario Canada. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Awesome. I'm currently travelling around a bit but will be back in QRO in a few months.
@@TrailguidePictures Hope to see you then! So many fabulous places in Mexico. Enjoy your travels :)
Hello Sophie, I’m in London now and I’m planning to visit Querataro but I don’t know anyone, is there anyway you can give me an assistance
Thanks for sharing your day of your outing. As always very informing information. I would love it if you did a video tour of El Centro for me.
It's a big area but I'm planning to walk through and film more. Thanks for the comment and suggestion. 🙂
@@TrailguidePictures Your welcome
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
HI Jason! (: Greetings from Veracruz! I am glad to see another English speaker in Mexico and Queretaro. I am hoping to visit there next week and hopefully will be there to move soon... Have you had time to check and look for another Canadians or English speakers in Queretaro? Because there are a lot not to mentioned being in the hub of the fastest growing city in Mexico! There are many UA-camrs whom I can point you to that can help you too. I am glad to see how many Mexicans are treating you (: Tip: if you are going to the bank, it is best that if you have more money in your account, to withdraw more money, so that way, you don't have to keep going back to the bank and withdrawing more and more money, because this means the same fee again that will eventually get higher. You cut down the fee money and your wallet will thank you. OR; depending on what bank you have, you can use your bank card to pay for certain things if they accept it, but might have to check with your bank if they charge you a international fee. Mexico is a cash commodity country unlike most of the developed countries from where we are from and accustomed to, so cash is still most often use everywhere. As for your Spanish, I am glad to see you make an effort, but if you have Netflix, best to watch a film or tv with English audio like I do, and watching, reading the subtitles in Spanish.
Coke Zero is called Coca Cola Sin Azucar, so if you want that you can order it like that, and the only difference in the bottle or can is that the lettering of "Coca-Cola" is black instead of white.
Gracias. Si, Quero una Coca sin azucar, por favor. 😀
for the High end market be sure to go to the city food at antea. its so high end no one can afford to shop there so nearly empty most days. more fancy imported stuffs. there is also a high end salumeria at antea for that spanish ham prosciutto-esq stuff
Is that in Juriquilla? To be honest I don't really do high end shopping, I'd rather live more like a local and shop at the local markets but it's good to hear about these places.
Thanks for the day in a life, Jason. Can't really complain about the prices, can you? 👍🙂
You got that right! Although of course we look at it from a foreigner perspective. The minimum wage here is around $8 USD per day or $172.87 pesos per day. I spent $345 pesos, so I spent two days earnings for someone making minimum wage here. Something I keep in mind, to keep my spending and wasting habits in check.
Hi Jason, we wanted to see the magic....... where is the rice with broccoli and chicken?
Dude, get a Langogo Genesis. They cost $200.00 and are almost flawless in translating over 100 languages.
Interesting. Never heard of them.
Jason you're very fit, but did you find the altitude difficult at all? I did the first time there.
Nope. Not at all.
@@TrailguidePictures OK good to know but you are quite fit! I'm getting there lol, but I have some of that drug Acetazolamida, and taken for a few days before and during, it helps.
Oh my God let me be your guys’ guide next time!
So did you like Querétaro?
Queretaro has a very nice downtown (Centro) it would be a great city if it was as on the sea and had a beach 😁
Great video. Loos very clean. What kind of camera and editing software do you use?
Thank you. I've got a list of my gear in the description. I edit in finalcut.
hi I just found your channel,,, wondered if you encountered expats in Q that were not just young urban professionals,, thank you,, safe happy travels
Prices in video is very nice touch.
Thank you. I thought it would add a bit of value for interest sake and also for anyone who's considering coming here.
"me gustaria" = I might like - conditional tense. I usually just say quiero. or cuanto es then si la prendo in italian, i guess its si la tomo or si la llevo in spanish. or si llevola! and then to be high spanish you would say "CHEVO" for the LL and that will really impress them or totally confuse them. they mostly know what u are saying regardless of mangling. I guess me gustaria is more for ordering in a fancy restaurant by my sensibility but it is the polite form like vorrei in italian. yo habia gustado I had liked it. yo ha gustado I have liked it. yo gustare i will like it. so all together si la CHEVO CHO gustarla
Interesting, thanks. I learned "mi gustaria" is "I would like" and "quiero" is "want" so was choosing the more polite way. I have a lot to learn with spanish.
The average local barber charges 50-60 pesos per haircut.
Interesting. So was I overcharged? Or are there price differences in that range.
@@TrailguidePictures I suspect it's cuz you went to a fancy unisex salon instead of an old school men's barbershop...
@@MorganBurton Probably right. I went to the first one I found.
what video editor do u use to put the prices in ?
I edit in finalcut.
@@TrailguidePictures I figured somethin fancy. I've been making due with corel but it is truly shite
How long will you live there ?
Good question. I'm here until May but I'm also looking for where to set up more permanently. Queretaro has a lot of good points and might be a good choice. I'll leave in May to go do a few other trips, but I may come back here.
Try a barber shop next time, better that a beauty shop' and cheaper.
True
Es tu québécois?
No, pero Canadiense
@@TrailguidePictures cool i'm Canadian too thank you so much for the sumary on how to prepare to.go.to Mexico!
You need to learn spanish quickly otherwise you will end up paying expensive things due to lack of communication. They say that in the world there are trilinguals, bilinguals and gringos. Don't make that saying to be true.
Doing my best, taking lessons. Link in the description
