I will take this as a positive sign. Yesterday was my last chemo session, and today if I can eat and my vitals are good I'm going home tomorrow. This is how I've been feeling encapsulated into one amazing display of how to play with guitar effects! Eddie Hazel was just one of the great musicians that George Clinton got to help him 'crew' "The Mothership"! Parliment Funkadelic all day! Peace.

This is one of the most incredible guitar solos and pieces of music ever put to tape. The story goes something like this. George Clinton told the guitarist Eddie Hazel to imagine, while he was playing that in the first part his Mother had just died and in the second that she had returned to life. The track originally had the whole band with Hazel playing both the rhythm and the solo. He was on the floor of the studio in front of his amps with his effect boxes and made these cosmic sounds. George Clinton thought that it would be better to take out the other musicians leaving only Hazel to take us to another world. Simply astounding.

I went to see Magma last month in London and on the way back from the 2nd night, a perfect evening was only heightened when walking under the bridge by my hotel an amazing guitarist was playing Maggotbrain. We chatted (he didn't stop) and I apologised as had no cash on me. He just smiled and said stay and listen. Wish I'd recorded him, but I was too in the moment to remember...................

I am so thrilled you have decided to join the P-Funk party. This song stands out from the rest of the P-Funk catalog, but it is a great intro for rockers in a bait and switch kind of way. This song is awesome live. I saw them 5 times between 1983 and 2006, and this song is always a show stopper whether played by the late great Eddie Hazell or Kid Funkadelic Michael Hampton. Keep digging. There are many more brilliant surprises waiting.

You are so right about absence being important here as well as the guitar itself. Very powerful song which provokes deep emotion.

Maggot Brain is what I think is THE guitar moment captured on record. I'm not saying that it's the best song, or the best solo, or that Eddie Hazel is my favorite guitarist or that this is the song that shaped me the most, or that it's the most emotional. It's not even my favorite genre (I'm a prog head, and a bachata aficionado). BUT its so high up on all these things, that when asked what is THE guitar moment, I say .... Maggot Brain.

I am delighted and surprised yet very happy you chose to play this EARLIER PRE-DISCO/FUNK-ADELIC. Musically they were the PERFECT FUSING of cultures with their UNIQUE conscious, Blues, Funk, Psychedelic, Soul and Rock music all in one style!!!!!!!!! > THIS ALBUM WAS A COMPLETE WATERSHED moment FOR ME at 15 in 71. FUNKADELIC began as the Soul vocal band PARLIAMENT but moved into psychedelia after "HENDRIX & taking LSD" (says their leader George Clinton) LOL!!!!!. I saw them LIVE in 71 & it was one of the most outrages and the most shocking of my early concert experiences at the time. There were huge stage props & at least 20 musicians/singers on stage each dressed in the most outlandish 70's attire. As a Black teen, just entering into my ROCK from SOUL/R&B phase, hearing JIMI as Black & White music genre's first began to blend along with young society was fantastic. Prior to then, Blacks & Whites weren't listening to the same music. But after the 60's cultural revolution. we were all FREEING OUR MINDS & EXPERIENCING the world outside the normal boundaries. And so were FUNKADELIC. EDDIE HAZEL (RIP) on guitar was told to simply let go. THIS was a HUGE SHIFT during that era & time of my young TEEN AWAKENING.

This was the 1st Rock & Roll song I ever heard. Where I live, in Cleveland Ohio, this was the number one requested song on a station called WMMS for something like 10 years. You're reading that right 10 YEARS. I believe it to be the best lead guitar line ever printed to wax. It use to be played at midnight every night for years. IMO this is better than anything Hendrix ever did.

  • @edwardsighamony
    @edwardsighamony 2 роки тому +1

Jimi Hendrix cast a huge shadow over African American guitarists in the 70s. Many guitarists in funk/soul bands from Ron Isley to Eddie Hazel to Shuggie Otis took what Hendrix did in the 60s towards the direction I think Hendrix was heading in.
I know most people would classify Funkadelic as a funk band, but I think secretly they're a progressive rock band. Funkadelic was supposed to be the rock side to Clinton's more soul/funk oriented Parliament (though, they would eventually merge by the end of the decade).
I would go so far as to say that George Clinton is the Black Frank Zappa (or is it the other way around?). Both got their start in the early days of rock involved in doo wop bands before evolving their later sound. Both have the same scatalogical sense of humor. And they both have incredible taste in surrounding themselves with extraordinary musicians.
You definitely need to check out the rest of their catalog.

Though the impetus given to Eddie Hazel was the thought of emotional loss, I believe George Clinton's actual intention was to convey grief for the destruction of Mother Earth.
This is Funkadelic at their psychedelic zenith. The musical commune of Funkadelic/Parliament/P-Funk All-Stars lead by George Clinton is more generally a classic funk band with psychedelic rock flourishes. A good cross-over track is Quickie from George's You Shouldn't 'Nuf Bit Fish album which is a funky track with a blistering guitar solo at the end. For full-on funk, One Nation Under A Groove is a classic of the genre (there is a 9 minute live version which really kicks posterior).

And yes, Eddie Hazel here is more or less doing Jimi Hendrix, it's not just your imagination. Funkadelic were intended to be more an acid-funk-rock band than the original Parliment, from which they sprung, who were much more straight ahead (by George Clinton standards, that is).

I'm glad you saw the Hendrix connection. I immediately thought that it was too bad you hadn't heard side 4 of Ladyland for music history reasons, because most players using the wah wah pedal (unless they are too young) are influenced by the song "Voodoo Child" (spelled with a "d" this time) on side 4. Kirk Hammett of Metallica, who uses the wah wah pedal on solos much of the time calls Hendrix the best of all time, considering the impact resulting from such a short career. It's because of people trying to duplicate the wah wah tone on that album that they make some pedals with tone controls, so you can control the limit of the treble, and make it as vocal sounding as possible.

I think I've listened to this once before . Some one was having slot of fun on the faders . Try Betty davis for funk . Her debut album is amazing.

George Clinton told Eddie Hazel to play with the emotions of hearing that his mother just died. This was done in take.

It has been said Eddie Hazel was on par with Jimi Hendrix, which is saying something!

Now you have heard this - try the live version from "One Nation Under A Groove". Truly stunning & superior to this one...

    'Parliament' is Dr.Jekyll....'Funkadelic' is Mr.Hyde.

Whenever I get into a convo about the "best guitar solo" ever, always point at this one. And always it's met by a raised eyebrow, vastly underappreciated!

just so you know, the rest of this album gets into much more traditionally funky territory, though still very raw and gritty. the final track, Wars Of Armageddon, also gets into a zone of psychedelic fuckery, but of a totally different kind. that being said, the whole album is definitely worth checking out, along with the entire "classic" period of Parliament/Funkadelic

Great album. The last track is an extended freak out which counterbalances this opening one.

How brave was it to include a track like this on what was ostensibly a funk record? I would have thought that the 'rock' fans wouldn't have gone near a band called Funkadelic and the funk fans might have hated this style but it actually works!!! Always liked George Clinton et al in their various guises. There's plenty of brains (and only a few maggots)

Not the best intro to Funkadelic imho. For me, the Hardcore Jollies album is their best. Funky but guitar driven. Coming Round the Mountain is awesome and a great live version of Cosmic Slop on it, too.

I'd never heard of this great track before now. The chords reminded me of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" in part. But this track is more early 70's. I looked it up. Its from 1971 and captures 1971 in aspic.
