The Approach Shot (nearly) Everyone Is Throwing Wrong

  • This situation comes up all the time and nearly every player in the world throws it the far more difficult way. This sounds like an exaggeration but it isn’t. This shot I show you is so simple that every player that learns it will be better at it that any pro in the world is at throwing it the incorrect way!
    Note: Gerry Geare was actually shown the throw by his friend Dave Yokum. When it comes to the history of throws, it gets quite murky, because somebody often showed “the creator of the throw” that throw first and then later we hear about that throw being used elsewhere in the world even earlier. So when it comes to crediting a throw to someone, I typically credit “the inventor of the throw” as the first person to use to throw competitively at a higher level and in competition This is completely subjective, but it’s the definition that I tend to prefer… That doesn’t make it correct though, just my opinion :-)

    Great Scott what a Great Shot. WILL add it to 'My Extended Bag of Tricks'. But I doubt the name will stick. Here's why: Most players throw for distance facing sideways with a power grip, but we putt facing forward with a fan grip. It's the same with rollers. With this shot, we are facing forward, with a fan grip, in order to throw an approach shot with accuracy. Therefore 'Approach Roller' is A. Accurate B. Easy to understand and C. Doesn't bog down in a "History of Frisbee Throws" debate😉. Thanks for posting. Can't wait to try it.

    It's taken some work but I've been pulling this shot out while playing now and it's been great. One key, for me at least, is to be relaxed about the throw- the disc really zips out without any effort and if I try to put too much speed on it, the disc flips over to the right very fast. A little bit of left leaning angle, relaxed release, and I'm getting those 40-80' right finishing rollers without any effort.
    Now if I could only stop flaring my sidearms out whenever I'm trying to go more distance than an upshot...

    Just call the shot the backhand scoober and call Brodie’s and the Ultimate throw the forehand or sidearm scoober, right?

    And just want to say great tip! Exactly what I need in my game. I’ve tried with the thumber roller, but that throw doesn’t have as much energy as this one👏

    The scoober is forehand. The throw you are describing is either the old man's throw or the chicken wing. Been in use for 30+ years. An old buddy of mine throws it almost exclusively after he had his like 5th shoulder surgery. Saw him ace with it on an elevated basket in league once. Impressive accuracy.

    • @gnarwhalnoah
      @gnarwhalnoah Рік тому +2

      Not a chicken wing either, at least not from my ultimate background (which I agree with Scott it makes disc golf more approachable if we rename some stuff to match ultimate). Chicken wing uses an upside down fan grip (4 fingers on top, thumb under the rim) but the throw is right side up because you throw with your palm down on your throwing arm side. The mechanics of the throw are very similar to a low arm angle baseball pitch, with obvious differences because you're holding a disc, but the result is something like a forehand, at least in terms of rotation direction and release point. I've never seen it be the best option in any game but I have seen players throw it quite far, it's a fun trick shot to have

    • @Austen.McDaniel
      @Austen.McDaniel Рік тому

      In ultimate there's an old man's throw and chicken wing as well! Our Old man throw is a backhand throw where as a right-handed player you throw from right hip like a normal throw with backhand grip. Kinda looks like the bowling or baggo style disc golf putting motion. Our chicken wing throw (my favorite goofy throw) is done with index finger on rim, all fingers fanned out out on top with thumb curled under rim. The disc is flat like normal on release and the throw is straight arm throw from about shoulder height. Comes out with the same spin as FH. I use it to throw a FH spinning throw around a defender. Love the way everyone has different names for all kinds of throws. Crazy how many ways you can throw a disc usefully!

    I've been throwing that shot since the mid 80's. Especially good when you've missed a double mandy--back in the day we had to "un-wind" if you missed going through. That meant shooting back towards the Mandy ON THE SAME SIDE YOU MISSED IT ON then going through the Mandy. It could really add up strokes If your roller missed and was now 300 ft passed the Mandy in a wooded section. And of course the roller always ended up "parked" under your basket you're going to--unless your me and miss the Mandy and Ace it!!! Arghhh.

    I just got done watching your video about the scoober roller. I don't think you need to change the name. Just identify it as a backhand scoober versus a side arm scoober. I think that could be an adequate correction cuz both shots are similar but thrown opposite ways

    This is awesome. I do forehand rollers for upshots all the time but they all finish left (duh) so I've been trying to do them left handed, sidearm cut roll, or even a thumber roller (exercise in futility) to get them to finish right. I've never even seen or thought about doing the shot this way. Super "stoked" about trying this!

    I'm more preoccupied by the number of Bergs you have. There's nothing on the shelves out here in Denver, CO!

    Awesome, Scott! Jeff from Indy here that does the children's discs with CM from Z discs. This throw is perfect for step out of left brush with the right hand to roll approach in the woods. I was doing it all wrong; laying it down far too early and trying to 'flick' it down with the fingers under the rim. Thanks Brother, for all you do. Which would you recommend in Innova: Rhyno, XD or Roc?
