Brushed finish would be closer to the factory look, polished wouldn't last long in the dirt, and it's ugly when scratched and scuffed. Great jobs guys.. Dinners the man!!

Ed looks like a real practical kind of guy. He's going to go through mud and water. Just keep it with a new factory look. Clean the wheels and coat the tires with some shine. Don't put "polish wheels" on his to do list.

I guarantee 'polish Rokon wheels' will never be on Ed's To Do.
These guy's mission is to give Ed the nicest gift they possibly can. They have no expectations of any of this staying in pristine condition, but they do it this way anyway because that's just how they do.
It's also great advertising for their regular work.

@@mircomuntener4643 I with you 100% , It's a work bike . There are a lot out there calling for polish and I thought I'd put my two cents in . In my opinion polish wheels don't fit the bike . Once you start polishing aluminum, you take away the protective oxidation , you are no longer wash and wear.

@@Robalo-2660 truckers near me, including log truck drivers, routinely give their trucks a periodic show shine that includes polishing the alcoa wheels, then go right back to work.
Those wheels will re-patina right back to how they are, and everyone's fine with that.
Polished aluminium looks fantastic, if only for a little while. Way better than chrome.
So little is removed, nobody is harming snything to polish it, and all the over the top cosmetic work is just for the moment of presentation. Everything that happens after that is just whatever it ends up being.
Everyone involved with this project has ensured that the fundamentals, the function, safety, and preservation of every component come first, then they're going over the top on cosmetics and upgrades.
      And that's ok.

As far as restoring the Golden Nugget and the Rokon goes, you guys at Robby Laytons do the most extensive detail work and spare no expense to make these vehicles look so great. The other people who handle the fabrication and mechanical aspects of these projects don't hold a candle to what you guys have contributed. The work quality that your team provides is gratifying to watch and much appreciated.

I love the polished look. BUT, if you do the rims you probably need to polish more of the other aluminum parts just so the wheels don't look out of place. In this case I think brushed aluminum rims would look better.

Cracked fork full of water, split u-joint boot, broken engine guard, pivots "lubricated by rusty water" - B&B missed a lot of basic items while clowning around. Don't polish the wheels to mirror shiny, just clean them up or try to keep the original finish. It's a work bike, not a Harley. If funds allow, I think Rokon has a sealed replacement U-joint.

Running the tank dry for storage may work in a dry climate, but it is death in a humid climate. The tank will suck in moisture during the day/night temperature cycles and rust the inside of the tank. Where I live we try to store bikes for winter with a tank full to the brim and treated with Stabil or similar. This minimizes the space that can suck in moist air and rust. Also, leaving the carb float bowl full helps keep the seals from drying out.

Been saying the same thing for months. Ed is elderly and he is fading as we speak. Had some relatives decide they were going to do some upgrades to an elderly member of our family. Got her moved into a condo while they went to work. After many changes and basically taking the place down to the studs she up and died. If they would've simply did the heating and ac, carpet appliances, roof and other odds and ends, she could have enjoyed the last two years in comfort. In things ,like this time is not on your side.

I agree that Ed is going to use this Rokon as it was designed, so I don’t think I would spend the time to polish them…but I think they would look awesome powder coated to match the theme of the other two pieces. It’s all going to look so awesome when finished. I love that you have such an eye and commitment to even the smallest of details. I first came across the golden nugget in Matt’s rescue and followed it Fab Rats and then to your garage. I also stumbled across Bikes and Beards…These four channels are the only ones I’ve cared enough about to subscribe to…I think what you guys are doing for Ed is awesome.

Robby, you and your team have truly put the Nugget and now the Rocon as top priority. Once you have gotten each you finish the unit at top priority speed with the highest quality. You should be proud of your team and yourself. Now if someone could please put a fire under Fab Rat to do the same. Fab Rat doesn't appear to have the drive to finish the Nugget like you did. I just want to see Ed get his things back while he is still on this side of the dirt. Thanks for Your great effort and the dedication of your team. You guys and the wife are Outstanding!!!

I had a friend who had a gold Trans Am - it had gold honeycomb rims from the factory. Looked great but eventually those rims rot away and fall apart. He had that happen and he stuck on some shiny Cragar's - totally ruined the look of that car. No shiny chrome rims on gold vehicles - ever!

If you're going to brush or polish the wheels, be sure to clear coat them afterwards to help keep them shiny. Ed isn't going to have the time or energy to spend all day polishing stuff, and the clear will also help keep the dirt from building up in the brushed finish as well.

After reading some 560 comments largely advocating polishing the wheels or clear coating them, I say the wheels new were probably fairly shiny, but NOT highly polished. I suggest hand polish with aluminum wheel cleaner, not buff. Ed was excitedly talking about taking it to his mine. Not taking it to shows. It will be beautiful enough. Diamonds and gold will sparkle on a woman. But both together do not make her beautiful.

Everyone's saying polish the rims but I think that's a big mistake. Look at who you're building this for, does Ed seem like a flashy kind of guy to you? No. This is an off road machine, give that man something he can ride through the sand and the muck. Restore the aluminum to its original finish but that's it.

Two schools of thought. 1. Polished aluminum would be pure eye candy! 2. On the other hand, Ed used to use it to hunt. Flashing his prey animals would not due well for a hunting trip. I would suggest black as the complimentary color. I would covertly find out Ed's plans. He may not hunt anymore but on the other hand, he may not hunt any less. Since the purpose is to please Ed. some more sneakiness may be in order. The seam would apply to the chromed parts. What a conundrum. A show piece or a "go" piece?
