Damn, country hero in the making here if you can’t say he is already. One of the few carrying the torch. He has great music of his own but plays the greats too! Love it and I hope to see him one day up here in the 49th state
I could see Alyeska bringing him up there or the state fair . I saw Lukas Nelson out there at Alyeska . Possibly koots but doubtful. That would be cool tho
Great cover from Colter. Beautiful writing from Townes. Amazing that Townes was never given more respect for his writing; one of the great American writers.
Well the wicked king of clubs awoke And it was to his queen turned His lips were laughing as they spoke His eyes like bullets burned The sun's upon a gambling day His queen smiled low and blissfully Let's make some wretched fool to play Plain it was she did agree He send his deuce down into diamond His four to hart, and his trey to spade Three kings with their legions come Preparations soon where made They voted club the days commander Gave him an army face and number All but the outlaw jack of diamonds And the aces in the sky Well, he gave his sevens first instructions Spirit me a game of stud Stakes unscarred by limitation Between a man named Gold and man named Mud Club filled Gold with greedy vapors Till his long, green eyes did glow And Mud was left with the sighs and trembles Watching his hard earned money go Now, the Diamond Queen saw Muds ordeal Began to think of her long lost son Fell to her knees with a mother's mercy And prayed to the angels every one Now, the Diamond Queen, she prayed and prayed And the Diamond Angel filled Muds hole The wicked King of Clubs himself Fell in face down in front of Gold Now, three kings come to Clubs command But the angels from the sky did ride Three kings up on the streets of Gold Three fireballs on the muddy side The club queen heard her husband's call But Lord, that Queen of Diamond's joy When the outlaw in the heavenly hall Turned out to be a wandering boy Now, Mud he checked and Gold bet all And Mud he raised and Gold did call And the smile just melted on his face When Mud turned over that diamond ace Now, here's what this story's told If you feel like Mud you'll end up Gold If you feel like lost, you'll end up found So amigo, lay them raises down
Such a torrent. But he missed... Flushes fell on Gold like water Tens they paired and paired again But the aces only flew through heaven And the diamond jack called no man friend Otherwise, damn fine.
I'm trying to learn the words to THIS version of this song. Which are slightly different from the original, so I'm going to do my best to transcribe the lyrics for you guys, and myself. Well, the wicked King of Clubs awoke And it was to his Queen he turned His lips were laughing as they spoke His eyes like bullets burned The sun's upon a gamblin' day His Queen smiled low and blissfully (and) "Let's make some wretched fool to pay" Plain it was, she did agree So he sent his Deuce down into Diamond His Four to Heart and his Trey to Spade Three Kings with their legions come and Preparations soon were made And they voted Club the day's commander Give him an army, face and number All but the outlaw Jack of Diamonds And the Aces in the sky Now he give his Seven's first instruction: Spirit me a game of stud Stakes unscarred by limitations 'Tween a man named Gold and a man named Mudd Club filled Gold with greedy vapors 'Til his long, green eyes did glow N' Mudd was left with the sighs and trembles Watchin' his hard-earned money go But the Diamond Queen saw Mudd's ordeal And began to think of her long, lost son Fell to her knees with a mother's mercy Pray to the angels, every one The Diamond Queen, she prayed and prayed And a Diamond Angel filled Mudd's hole And the wicked King of Clubs himself Fell face down in front of Gold And now three Kings come to Club's command But the Angels from the sky did ride Three Kings on the streets of Gold Three fireballs on the muddy side The Club Queen heard her husband's call But Lord, that Queen of Diamond's joy When the outlaw in the heavenly hall Turned out to be her wanderin' boy So Mudd, he checked and Gold did call And Mudd he raised and Gold bet all And that smile just melted off his face When Mudd turned over that Diamond Ace And here's what this story's told: If you feel like Mudd you'll end up Gold Feel like lost you'll end up found So amigo, lay them raises down. Mmmmmmm :) Colter left out one stanza that's in the original, that would normally be between 6 and 7. Also, I believe he mixed up the "did call" and "bet all" in the second to last stanza. I think this is possibly the most bad ass thing I've ever heard. Love it so much.
Steve Earle has a story where he was playing his first show and only 4 people showed up. Half way through, Towns came in, wasted, sat in the front and heckled him after every song. Eventually Earle shut him up by playing this song. He said only him and 3 other people he knew could actually play it.
This is my first time liking the original better. To be fair, you usually have three or four versions, and this only has one, so, do at least two more before I decide.
I love the fact that he not only has the sound, but pays homage to those that came before him. He's got excellent taste. Townes is my favorite ever

A true modern day legend covering one of the greatest who ever lived, it don’t get much better than that! Thanks for putting up the recording W.B.
...I can’t believe I just found this today. I really love your work.
Great cover from Colter. Beautiful writing from Townes. Amazing that Townes was never given more respect for his writing; one of the great American writers.
Love that MO-lasses in his voice. Great song .
TVZ was something else probably the greatest country songwriter of all time thank you for doing these TVZ covers
Thank you for all your online content. 😍🥰☀️. If I could press “like” everytime, I would
Well the wicked king of clubs awoke
And it was to his queen turned
His lips were laughing as they spoke
His eyes like bullets burned
The sun's upon a gambling day
His queen smiled low and blissfully
Let's make some wretched fool to play
Plain it was she did agree
He send his deuce down into diamond
His four to hart, and his trey to spade
Three kings with their legions come
Preparations soon where made
They voted club the days commander
Gave him an army face and number
All but the outlaw jack of diamonds
And the aces in the sky
Well, he gave his sevens first instructions
Spirit me a game of stud
Stakes unscarred by limitation
Between a man named Gold and man named Mud
Club filled Gold with greedy vapors
Till his long, green eyes did glow
And Mud was left with the sighs and trembles
Watching his hard earned money go
Now, the Diamond Queen saw Muds ordeal
Began to think of her long lost son
Fell to her knees with a mother's mercy
And prayed to the angels every one
Now, the Diamond Queen, she prayed and prayed
And the Diamond Angel filled Muds hole
The wicked King of Clubs himself
Fell in face down in front of Gold
Now, three kings come to Clubs command
But the angels from the sky did ride
Three kings up on the streets of Gold
Three fireballs on the muddy side
The club queen heard her husband's call
But Lord, that Queen of Diamond's joy
When the outlaw in the heavenly hall
Turned out to be a wandering boy
Now, Mud he checked and Gold bet all
And Mud he raised and Gold did call
And the smile just melted on his face
When Mud turned over that diamond ace
Now, here's what this story's told
If you feel like Mud you'll end up Gold
If you feel like lost, you'll end up found
So amigo, lay them raises down
Such a torrent. But he missed...
Flushes fell on Gold like water
Tens they paired and paired again
But the aces only flew through heaven
And the diamond jack called no man friend
Otherwise, damn fine.
Anything from Ol' Colter is just solid fuckin' gold. And that there is the damn truth hoss! Thanks for this upload W.B.
Musical poetry, magical storytelling, thank you Townes, thank you Colter, thank you WB
What did I just hear. WOW. Townes is not a songwriter but a writer of songs!. Big difference. And Colter GOLD!
Colter wall is the only man to cover towns van zant that I can't bitch about
I agree. Thought the same a week or two ago.
The best, most authentic gamblin' song ever written.
I must be a thousand of the views on this video by now. Colter wall covering Townes doesn’t get old
Didn't know I needed this until I saw it

Well, the wicked King of Clubs awoke
And it was to his Queen he turned
His lips were laughing as they spoke
His eyes like bullets burned
The sun's upon a gamblin' day
His Queen smiled low and blissfully (and)
"Let's make some wretched fool to pay"
Plain it was, she did agree
So he sent his Deuce down into Diamond
His Four to Heart and his Trey to Spade
Three Kings with their legions come and
Preparations soon were made
And they voted Club the day's commander
Give him an army, face and number
All but the outlaw Jack of Diamonds
And the Aces in the sky
Now he give his Seven's first instruction:
Spirit me a game of stud
Stakes unscarred by limitations
'Tween a man named Gold and a man named Mudd
Club filled Gold with greedy vapors
'Til his long, green eyes did glow
N' Mudd was left with the sighs and trembles
Watchin' his hard-earned money go
But the Diamond Queen saw Mudd's ordeal
And began to think of her long, lost son
Fell to her knees with a mother's mercy
Pray to the angels, every one
The Diamond Queen, she prayed and prayed
And a Diamond Angel filled Mudd's hole
And the wicked King of Clubs himself
Fell face down in front of Gold
And now three Kings come to Club's command
But the Angels from the sky did ride
Three Kings on the streets of Gold
Three fireballs on the muddy side
The Club Queen heard her husband's call
But Lord, that Queen of Diamond's joy
When the outlaw in the heavenly hall
Turned out to be her wanderin' boy
So Mudd, he checked and Gold did call
And Mudd he raised and Gold bet all
And that smile just melted off his face
When Mudd turned over that Diamond Ace
And here's what this story's told:
If you feel like Mudd you'll end up Gold
Feel like lost you'll end up found
So amigo, lay them raises down.
Mmmmmmm :)

Dude is gold
Holy shit!!! I'm so happy he did this one!!!
Is this from a concert? Where’s it from originally?
Phone recording
Only person on the planet with nuts to cover this song
Ben Lutz exactly what I was going to say.
How does he walk with nuts that big
Townes Earle (Y)

Justin Townes Earle did
Gives me chills 💀
I play this video at least once a week

Damn
Anyone got tab for this version of the song🤣
This is who Jones meant when he asked who was gonna fill their shoes.
With aaaaaaaaall due respect to Townes, I prefer CW's version.
Amy D Justin Townes Earle does a good version too.
I agree, totally. CW gave a different life to this song
Should have done a proper recording of this
T.V.Z. Thanks.

...I still only listen to yours mostly 🥰
