  • This FM synthesis tutorial series will analyse the DX7 factory patch, Vibe. This video will cover a plan of attack and improvements so as to make a new DX7 vibe patch with sharp and crisp attack and smooth chorused decay! It will really shine with effects and you can use it live performance or mixing of your own music!!!! It has such an amazing realism and expressiveness, thanks to the DX7 FM synthesis.
Please note that although my tutorials use the DX7 for FM sound design, what you’ve learnt here can be applied to any FM synthesizers, including Yamaha dx7 vst and plug-ins such as Dexed, FM7 and FM8.

DX7 users wanting to get into FM programming ... Watch it !
Thumbs up for this new DX7 / FM synthesis tutorial, allowing people to understand how any particular changes made to a given sound will help to get the expected result ...
Great week to you ! ;-))

Thanks Synth Colors!! As I'm bilingal (I think the same as you), I'm trying to make Japanese friendly videos. I also added the DX7 screen videos so that people can exactly see what's going on with programming on the DX7.

Yes, great idea to use several languages to make them easier to "handle" ... & maybe shorter, concentrated dedicated to specific functions with awesome added screens / visual & audio examples still ! ;-))

when you said "take a minute to look at algo 20-32 and choose one who closely resembles that has many carries and rooting" and I was like 21...21....21...21 when you announced the right answer was 21 I was like yeahhhsss!!!!!

You got it!! That's the most important thing with FM synthesis, understanding and trying out algorithms to find a sweet spot in sound design. It's not remembering which algorithm is best for a particular sound, because that's just someone who think they know FM synthesis, but they don't. You just never know which algorithms are suitable for which sounds. The whole point of teaching you the algorithm interchangeability is that you get to create some great sounds without someone telling you that this algorithm is for this or that.

Yeah! the whole point is experimentation, thinking of a sound in my mind and how many elements (thus, carries) I would like in it. Then the more complex those elements I'd need to introduce modulation and harsher more gritty harmonics via feedback... I am still waiting for your JX synth sounds and review, and also would please like to request tutorial or LEVEL 42 metallic clav XD

I'm within the video, but not sure which sound that you are after, ua-cam.com/video/9x1RcVrGjGM/v-deo.html. I can hear e.piano, and sharp bass like sound and some other sounds.

Wouldn't it make sense to set the OSC detune of operator 4 to -4 and the OSC detune of operator 5 to +4, keeping the resulting frequency difference at 0? Otherwise, the resulting sound may sound a little bit off when playing with other instruments.
The same for operator 1 and 2: I set operator 1 OSC detune to -1 and operator 2 OSC detune to +1.
Other than that. in the original VIBE 1 patch I had, the operator 1 and 2 rate scaling was set to 2 instead of 3.
Finally: thank you so much for creating these videos, you're explaining it very well. I'm enjoying your lessons and explanations and it's fun as well.
