George Benson had a monster hit with his cover of this song.
This version of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade" conjures up visuals of a 50s or 40s jazz club. Karen, with a group of Big Band musicians behind her, standing in the darkened club in a lone spotlight, behind one of those big round microphones, wearing a blue shimmering evening dress. Smoke from a cigarette curling up to the ceiling from an ashtray on the table. A glass tumbler with two inches of amber-colored bourbon sits within reach. And Karen’s voice wrapping around me.

This is a Leon Russell song. Carpenters covered a few of his; "Superstar" and "A Song For You" were by Russell also..."This Masquerade" is essentially jazz, and indeed Richard and Karen started out as two thirds of a jazz trio in the mid-60s...

@@artistbrindle she was amazing! It's almost addictive to watch and listen to her drumming. She's so in the groove, into another world. But that's true for any great drummer, losing themselves into the instrument and becoming one with it. I love all the videos when she was still playing while singing for their concerts. The November 1970 gig was beautifully done, too, outside and on the lawn at Walter Reed. My favs are the 1974 Budokan, Japan concert and the 1972 Australian concert. Wooohooo!

I love coming here because you mix it up. First, I NEVER saw that full version of her drumming on that talent show anywhere else. Second, everyone else is doing the same songs...it's like all the reactors are watching the other reactors: "Ohh, he's doing 'We Only Just Begun,' queue it up!" Same thing with Rainy Days, Superstar, Close to You, etc. Oh I love the Carpenters and have the albums, but "This Masquerade" has a moodier, jazzy vibe to it and is so soothing to listen to, and nobody does it. So thanks for that. Bob Messenger is such a talented woodwinds guy; did the flute on this one, and the sax on one I'd love you to hear. I loved the solo so much I transcribed it for a jazz-improv assignment in college; it's beautifully constructed, a perfect solo. It's on "A Song for You." This is another smoldering, evocative piece I think you'll like. Again, thanks for mixing it up!

I do not know how to write directly to FortWorthFabian. Here is hoping my public comment will make his way to him. When I first heard Karen’s version of “This Masquerade,” I thought if only Richard worked with Karen to produce a full album, heck two albums, of big band / Jazz songs. Linda Ronstadt brilliantly did two or three such albums working with Nelson Riddle. Karen could have been equally brilliant. FortWorthFabian needs to check out the Carpenter’s “I Can Dream Can’t I.” Made most popular by the Andrew’s Sisters, but covered I think by Tommy Dorsey, and others.
