To all my fellow artists that receive requests to do their job for free and feel bad saying no.
Respect yourself, your craft and passion, time and effort you’ve put into this, and make a very clear distinction between those who offer you an unpaid performance that will indeed help you out in the long run VS cheap, inconsiderate, and greedy people who just want to take advantage of you.
Let's share and put an end to this.
If you liked it, please give it a 👍🏻 & follow - I appreciate it

The dislikes are probably from those people who don't want to pay.
....And from those shallow-minded people who simply can't get why it matters to any artists. All, or at least, most of them would surely take this as something "egoistical" on the part of the artist - which is not. And for sure it's just their own pathetic way of justifying their selfish reasons on why they want to hire an artist free of charge.
😂

Like the saying goes "If you are good at something, don't do it for free"
good saying :)
Unless doing it is worthy [e.g. free lessons to a child who can't pay, playing at a party with friends, etc.]
Just don't accept to work for free when they are only trying to exploit you.
It depends. I think what's important is this: If you do free stuff, do it on your own terms. Whilst there is a lot of corporate investment in free software these days, without enthusiasts pouring work into it the entire movement that brought it into existence wouldn't even have existed to begin with. There's also something to say about free art (and software, of course) in the game development scene as well. The stuff talked about in the video is just blatant insolence, however, and doesn't just touch on issues of art, but goes deeper into the issue of worker exploitation.
I believe it goes beyond that. Isn't any work value on several years of hard practicing? Many times people think that playing an instrument in a professional level it is just like a hobby, when actually is a lifetime sacrifice.
Unless you enjoy doing it for free.
The worst part is, when something is free, people tend to not see the value in it. And end up complaining about the smallest things.

And now this canva, logomakers and all!
All the companies like Fiverr, Upwork, FreeUp, Freelancer... and many more including all the microstock and streaming music are destroying the creative industries, only a few make money because of volume. I had to. It has more weight when it's polite and to the point.
I don't think it was that polite but it also wasn't rude or anything. it's just honest. You wouldn't call a restaurant and expect them to cater for free, why people think they can do that with entertainers is ridiculous

@Polite Comments On Current Affairs Watching TV is a hobby, learning an instrument to a professional level is NOT a hobby. It’s a profession, just as valid as any other. Comparing a professional musician to someone who’s watched TV their whole life is idiotic and naive at best.
This right here! Also, when you're on a gig and they want you to play overtime for free. That's why I tell people "I'm a violinist" and not "I play the violin" people hear the word "play" and interpret it as not being hard work or something to be given away for free.
Interesting perspective. I think I’ve actually heard it somewhere before. The word “play” somehow has a different connotation to different people
As far as overtime on the gig, I only do gigs with a contract. I put it together and It’s very detailed. It provides rates for every adjustment the client may wish to make on the day of. I’m happy to stay overtime if I can, but they’ve signed the contract stating how much that would cost exactly so I’m protected either way.

I love this video and it's a great lesson for many.
Thank you for sharing and will definitely keep this in mind.

Worst of all is when they think you only care about money because you expect payment for your work
Artists are always the most unnapreciated in society; its hard to make a career out of it, despite it being hard to do, and nobody is willing to pay for what you do, despite them enjoying your work
What's worse, is when they ask you to come over a TV show, but you have to pay because you will be exposed.

It is the saddest thing. Should be obvious.
Yah explaining something obvious, what a shame.
The saddest thing is people will expect money for their watered down talents. When the crickets start to chirp and you find yourself surrounded by cobwebs you'll see how foolish it was to get an art degree.

Here's one "come and play (for free) at my party - its a party - you can enjoy the party too!". I'm a classically trained double bass player - I've also played jazz for 30 years. I hear what you're saying, Anastasiia - respect is the key word.
Reminds me of the work in a bar's kitchen - the party, and the people, are out there, but you're in working clothes, and an entirely different mindset.
Thank you for your support
You are one beautiful woman, with all respect. And yeah, screw exposure. Hopefully artists aren't selling themselves short by falling into this trick. Exposure will NEVER pay your bills!
Thank you!
Imagine going to a car dealership and saying 'I have no money, but your car will get exposure.'
To be fair, famous people like soccer players would actually get paid to drive a certain car for free. And I guess that most artists would play for free at a major event like the World Cup - for exposure. It's just that the kind of people that use the 'exposure' argument tend to overestimate the significance of their event and actually just want to cheap out.
@@AlfaToTheOmega GASP
You mean my Brother's Birthday isnt as good as an exposure as a World cup
Blasphemy
I can't agree more! People must have some respect
I’ll be here when that happens... *sigh*
It baffles me that this isn't common sense to many. It's not like being a musician or an artist is a hobby, it's a profession and you got to make a living.
Chico, they think its a "gift"
This video is exactly what I needed...
I'm gonna send it to a loooot of people 😌

thanks in the name of all the artists🙏
Be my guest! :)
Have been in this profession for twenty years. This does still happen. It’s sickening to me and beyond rude. Don’t ever accept anything apart from money.
Agree. Digital Era. For most of people nowadays everything must be at disposal for free, and quick, like a click on a mouse...
They don't even think about all the work behind the music and art in general... It's really sad.
Not just this way in the digital era.
I feel like it’s always been that way, digital era only has brought it to light more
@@MmmAnastasy Indeed.. You've got a point.
Absolutely true.
Same with learning music. Some think they will be musician in 4 months. You want results? Work for it.
Yes, these two things go hand in hand. If there is an expectation that learning to be good at playing an instrument does not take much, then there is also an expectation that musicians should not hesitate to play for free here and there.
@@MmmAnastasy
Anecdote:
I'm a boomer learning jazz doublebass for 4 years (weekly private lessons). I'm still a... can I say an advanced beginner? Fortunately, I have a good teacher. Sometimes, for fun, I jam with a classical pianist reading a "jazz standard" score. I think I'm slowly initiating her to jazz. She likes it.
Musicians really deserve wages to match their hard work.
@@MmmAnastasy
If you don't know her, Regina Carter is a talented jazz violonist. Rather rare in jazz, except in gypsie jazz.

@@Pierre50mm thanks for sharing! Will check it out
Exactly! You don’t pay for the event, and then hope you can pay for the artist (or just don’t pay.)
You pay for the artist SO you can have an event in the first place.
This is so true. It's particularly annoying when they present it to you as if they are doing you a favour. I have also been asked - by complete strangers - for regular music lessons, on the assumption that they would be free of charge.
I'm not a pro illustrator per se, but when I joined an art club during my junior year in college, I've had my share of dealings with people who asked me to make them an illustration for free in exchange for my "exposure." I put that in quote because I now I know it was bollocks. I did a free character design once for a college friend because they were going to have an event & needed a mascot. I did it, yet no exposure or acknowledgement whatsoever. No mention of me even in the event's facebook page. They only said "thank you" & jogged off. Since then, I refused to do free illustrations for anyone, even my family. Some shrugged me off, but some mocked me for being unsupportive & unfriendly.
I would, however, give someone one of my drawings for free as birthday presents that's based on my own initiative. I did give some people my drawings/illustrations as birthday presents because I was broke during college. Couldn't afford to buy a girl a dress, drew her in the dress I wanted to buy for her & gave the illustration on her birthday.
That last line tho. What a chad.
sounds awful. like you become as that people but from the other side. you can't draw for your family, really?
@@dasjidjsaidji2132nd of course he can are you blind??? he'll do it for a price 🤐🤐😬🤣
My sister drew me and gave it to me on my birthday lol
@@dasjidjsaidji2132nd I'll draw for free for anyone, but on my own terms & initiative.
The thing is, some people in my family & circle of friends never really cared about me until they really needed something from me. Some asked for free because "we're cousins" or "we were classmates in high school." It was a business, not a charity. I was really broke & needed some income for college & daily life.
I won't be used by anyone for my skills without compensation & for me to be disposed later like a chewing gum, you get me?
I'm an animator and I get this all the time. I usually throw the ball back to them by saying - "Get my a storyboard and a sound break down and I'll see what I can do." None of them ever get back to me when they realize that they're then going to have to work for free.
@@teach-learn4078 i also Dj a little on the side. once i had my decks set up and the guy whose party it was came up to me with a set of his old 78s. (i was playing for free) They were too old to work on my turn tables. He then set up an old wind up gramaphone and suggested I jumped between my technics decks and his ancient machine. Obviously there was no way to hook up the gramaphone to the speaker system. The thing took about a minute to wind up until it was able to work. no way to use it in a proper set. So i suggested that he stand at his gramaphone and play his 78s when he wanted and give me a signal so we could work in tandem. He walked off and got himself a drink.
Well played!
@@MrSunrise- : Or _not_ played, as the case may be.

People may think this is obvious and any thoughtful person might understand this. But, I am smart and understanding, but still understood only after being told. This is needed. Thanks.
"You'll get exposure!" Great, do you know a grocery store that takes exposure-bucks? Because artists gotta eat, too.
The conversation surely then continues like this: “Why won’t you do it for free? You’re an artist, you should be doing it for the art.” , a most hilarious argument.
Yeah. I do get shamed like that, too. Called “greedy”, “stuck-up” and “too important”. LOL. It’s ridiculous
because no artist is just an artist, they are also mercenaries like all of us
I can’t imagine how can people be so horrible. No one has to do anything for you, no one owes you anything! It’s so offending to ask someone to do something for free for you. I would not even ask a friend to do something for free for me, unless I am in a desperate situation, and even then I would not ask it for free but promise to pay later. If you pay for your food or for your car being repaired, you pay for someone playing the violin for you. It’s that simple.
"I will pursue my art then, in my own time with my own choices. Thank you and good luck at your event! Bye!"
Artists gotta eat too
Well said!! Like you said, all Artists, not just Musicians.... I draw, sometimes people, acquaintance, not really close friends ask if I can do drawings for them for free. I was like...forget the high cost of drawing materials, they have no respect to my time at all! What makes them to think ARTISTS are all work for free.
I'm a translator. You have no idea how many people, friends, etc. who want me to work for free.
I never hesitate to say no to acquaintances/friends outside of my immediate circle. You shouldn’t either. Those who love you and are truly your friends would never ask. You’d offer it yourself if you so wished.
That's a sad part of today's working culture, every sector wants "Work for free". "You will get a great exposure" has to be exposed.
That's a great message. Truly agree with you Anastasia. When an artist spend half of his life and time on becoming this great. Then people should be ashamed of asking something like this. Artist pays to learn and he should definitely get paid to contribute to society. That's the deal, and we as a society should respect their talent. God Bless you alot❤️
My family used to own a small and humble candy store and people were always asking for discounts or for donations. There was a time this store was our sole source of income for us and when we told them that we couldn't do any kind of discount or donation then they proceeded to get angry and tell us they wouldn't buy anything there ever again. It's not the same but I think it applies.
I think it's as relevant; people are asking for free labor and not respecting the time and effort that it takes to establish oneself in the world.
Thats funny cause they didnt intend on buying things in the first place so who cares if they dont buy from there ever
They should feel lucky to have a family owned candy store in their community. That's a special kind of place that isn't on every street. People get on my nerves..
"I won't buy anything here ever again!"
"What do you mean, 'again'? You were asking for stuff for free, you weren't buying anything to begin with."
This is EXACTLY the same in the illustration world! People asking for free or insultingly cheap artwork. Excellent video and notes, Anastasiia. Brava!
Definitely agree. considering the time and effort you put in to master your craft.
Oh my soul!! Fellow musician here too!! I play classical piano and I do photography as well! I can't begin to tell you how many times this has happened to me too. So unbelievably frustrating. Thank you for doing this video!
This happens to ALL musicians. It's really incredible.
Incredible in how horribly spread out it is...
Imagine spending your whole life in something you like, improving everyday and working hard to do stuff for free like that lmao

My rule is to only work for close family and friends for free. Even at that, my family and friends would still pay for my drinks and good times!
Friends and family, of all people, know how much effort and time has gone into getting to where you are professionally. If they love you and are there for you, they’d never me so inconsiderate as to take advantage of you. If my close people are considerate I always offer to play for them first. I’m happy to do so.
