    Mount Holden is a basaltic volcano in Sunbury, Australia. It's comprised of a mixture of effusive and explosive eruptions with basalt and scoria existing all around the structure. In this video we take a look at this Australian volcano and explore some of the characteristics of it and the surrounding township of Sunbury.

    Pumice and "hash"? That would be explained by the rock festivals at Sunbury in the early 70's. Great video, cheers.

    Hi OzGeology. The quartz is indeed an interesting feature. I have passed through Sunbury on occassion and have stopped for a break at Sheoak Reserve, but didn't really know about Mount Holden, so thanks for this video. Next time I'm passing through there, I'll keep a lookout for a bloke with a camera talking to scoria and basaltic components, whispering, "I love you".

    Amazing vid, just climbed Mt Holden this afternoon.
    I've been picking up quartz rocks last 3 or 4 times been up there.
    I've noticed most quartz is mainly on the eastern side of the mountain.
    I will have to se if I can locate that out cropping you showed.
    There are a couple of other interesting places on the south side of Sunbury too, along Jackson Creek around the Holden Reserve area.
    I am aware there are also 2 exposed quartz reefs between Sunbury and Diggers that one was mined back in the 1800s.
    They pulled out 308 oz per 157.5 tone.
    It's still out there, just need to find it...❤

    • @OzGeologyOfficial
      @OzGeologyOfficial  4 дні тому +1

      I'm going to make a video on the one in Diggers that was mined, I finally located the sucker. It's been filled in unfortunately. The quartz in the video is also on the eastern side of the mountain. I should take a few samples and crush them up haha.

    • @simosdiygarage5063
      @simosdiygarage5063 4 дні тому

      @@OzGeologyOfficial Hit me up when you are planning on coming back to check out the mine, I also know where it is too.
      However, I am still searching for the second one that is apparently hanging out of a cliff wall near the old Diggers school in that same area.
      I believe they took a few samples out of it, but they say it was not profitable for them.
      Would be great to take some samples from there too and crush that up.

    We live near Miners Rest and I was wondering if there is a geology site we can go to to see how old our local volcanoes (Mt Pisgah and Mt Hollowback) are?

    • @OzGeologyOfficial
      @OzGeologyOfficial  3 дні тому +1

      I love Miners rest. The volcanoes there and north of there in the Creswick area are definitely the best in Victoria. Information about the volcanoes of Victoria is sparse to say the least. Most articles will say "within the past 7 million years". Without giving more of a definitive date beyond that. I think there are too many volcanoes for them to cover hahaha

      @@OzGeologyOfficial Cheers mate, so not as recent as Buninyong and Warrenheip. I read in the local paper Mt Buninyong erupted only about 40 - 60,000 years ago. We're safe 😂

    I love your videos, I’m originally from Victoria and find it very interesting about what I thought were just hills. I now live in Wagga Wagga NSW and live on the side of a small hill called Willans Hill, would it be possible that it may be an ancient volcano, there are lots of rocks in the area that look volcanic.
