Oh to have the chance of a live lesson from this man , so expressive and not too full of himself, i bet his lessons were/are a blast. Can't find him on internet, so sad.
The current obsession with hyper-realism is tiresome. This tutorial and this approach to portrait painting is very refreshing and Jon Davies is clearly a genuine Master. He can do more with a few strokes than a hyperrealist does with several thousand.
I usually don’t leave comments but I had to on this. Literally I have saved so much money by not going to art school by just watching this video. He explains things so much better.
I wish that this video had been uploaded when he was there or even when he was younger and could answer questions. This is super duper helpful especially if you want to do semi-realist yet loose portraits. I'm just going to do as he said and save this and refer to it. I looked up what sugar paper is and it's like a construction paper that we used in kindergarten. So my thought is that we can use the cheaper Mi-Tientes drawing paper. I say this b/c as he was drawing/painting I had a pad of paper out that I was using to draw, with pencil, a portrait that I will eventually put on velour. That pad of paper was a bristol vellum - extremely smooth and used for either pencil or ink. Needless to say, it certainly wouldn't behave will any pastel or even the Conte a Paris that I have sitting on my table at all times. So, what did I do? I got mad and took the nearest sharp object, a pen, and scribbled out my drawing and then wadded it up and threw it away. Now, I only hope and pray that my husband doesn't get mad at the DEEP scratch marks on my/our table [it isn't an expensive thing dut dang!]. Anyway, good joy and leaving the grief behind, to all aspiring pastellists.
Not only a great artist but great sense of humour Mr. Davies. I laughed so hard at the false eyelashes thing and 'getting away with poking pastels up somebody's nose'. Great demo!!
So much better than other pastel portraits I have seen! So generous with instruction! I hope you continue to share more of your instructive videos! Will share with others!
Jon, you are a real artist, and individual with a characteristics of an institution. Very inspiring, full of spirit, and liveliness in the sketching. I watched, heared, and enjoyed every seconds of your painting. Great video. Thank you for sharing. I liked and subscribed it.
Awesome video tutorial! THANK YOU for sharing so much of your love and gift of pastel portrait painting! So much information packed into this.... and so much fun to watch and follow. Bravo!
Such a nice gentleman a great teacher a humble person you are sir. I salute you. I love you I respect you I wish i had the opportunity to sit with you talk to you learn from you pour you a glass of water. 💕
I often find that when I'm drawing a portrait I often get to a phase in the drawing when it just looks ugly, years ago that was when I gave up and tried again but I found that pushing past that ugly phase my compositions more often than not come together and I end up with a finished piece I am proud of.
Just fell in love with this guy's teaching. The voice, the insight, and the soothing demeanor gave me a whole new way of looking at my own work as a portrait artist.
Hey dude it’s definitely necessary to draw every hair on my head, I’ve only got three left, lol love the video really good keeps up the good work and God bless 🙏🏻
Wow Ive learnt so much from this video one thing that I picked up was how you are not drawing what u see on a photo because why draw a photo when u can just print one, so that's what I picked up because yesterday I finished a realistic sketch of Dywan johnson the rock and it looked like a photo but what I changed about it was I did like drips coming down his shoulders, I've done art for 7 years now and I'm only 13 but age don't mean anything.....this is because my mum is an artist
I'm so happy to come across this amazing video. I love drawing faces, but my 9th grade art teacher missed the mark (even so, she was generous with her time). Thank you Mr. Davis. I will be re-watching and practicing.
Jon Davies is my new hero. If you are watching this sir, please know that I am a beginner artist at 43 years of age and you have inspired and encouraged me. I will be looking for more videos featuring you, because I know I could learn a lot. And even if not, it is so enjoyable. Some love Bob Ross... I love Bob Ross. But you are my new favorite artist. Damned masterful, sir.
I love how Mr. Davies breathes... it's an energetic, ACTIVE style... he's increasing his oxygen as he creates... he's CREATING with a very active style and full of vim and vigor... I can feel the art flowing through the video into my mind.
Marvellous, I love the way you think, and work. Thank you so much, I am a impressionist seascape and landscape painter, and my greatest wish is to paint a portrait, so grateful to you. Maxine
Jon u are an amazing teacher....I'm revisiting your tutorial while convalescing from covid... you give me hope again..yay...with practice I can do this again.
This is WOW!!! I am not even in the half of the video and just by seen and trying one time I´ve already emproved so much my drawing. Thank you, really. And this Jon Davies its so exited, we can see that he really enjoys being an artist.
WOW. Love this video it was lovely his voice is very soothing and explanation is very simple. This was very educational would love for you to do a video on a older person wrinkles, crows feet, freckles and so on. again lovey video.
Wow, you make pastel painting look so easy....thanks. I am new to this, I usually paint with Acrylics, but want to do something new. This has helped me a lot as I'm not good at the drawing aspect of art....
The portraits are classic, but the training is in an expressive manner, in clear English… I especially liked the expression as for Irving, in the initial stage to sketch a blue sockets instead of eyes!======= In a word -This is overcoming the psychological pressure! 💕
You must have patience. Trust that, with time and effort, you WILL improve. Too many people want good results right away. They get discouraged and never achieve anything ! Keep Going !! and Don't fall for that nonsense about 'Talent'. Telling yourself that you just don't have any talent is a cop-out.. a way to avoid doing the work. Skills will develop without you realizing it. Successes will lead to more success.
When light strikes a translucent sphere like an eyeball or a marble or a grape, the light hits the EXTERIOR of the orb first, passes through it unseen and shows up again on the INSIDE surface on the far side of the sphere.
I love watching your video, you have a God given talent for art and teaching. I do have a question. You showed where the reflection is on the one eye.... will it be the same for the opposite eye? Thank you for sharing with us.
The most useful, instructive and practical portraiture tutorial I’ve seen by far, and there have been many. Jon Davies should be much better known.

They are totally different disciplines all together. Each has there own skill set. Like apples and pears
One of the very best teachers so far, one who pinpoints the parts we tend to overlook.
I usually don’t leave comments but I had to on this. Literally I have saved so much money by not going to art school by just watching this video. He explains things so much better.
