    Hello Emma, I wanted to comment in regards to your tutorial here. As I am sure you are aware. there is always a sour grape in every cluster, if you get my drift. lol I am 72 years old, have been an artist most of my life and many of those years a portrait artist. I have a degree and certification to teach although I do not claim to be a critic. I have studied the works of many of the best portrait artists in the U.S. and worldwide, and I would like to say your understanding of color, tonality, and highlight application is outstanding! You are easily one of the most gifted artists and portrait painters I have ever seen! Your ability to teach is superb! GOD has mightily gifted you young lady...KEEP SHARING IT! GOD bless you Emma! :-)

      Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it! There is always a fair amount of ignoring sour grapes when you put yourself and your work out for the world to comment on. I don't expect everyone to like it, but it would be lovely if some people weren't so rude. Their rudeness no doubt causes them more trouble than it does me, so let them at it. Thanks again for commenting :-)

    In my late 70's and starting to get back into portraits- mainly because of my precious grand babies. It is always been difficult for the first few months until it once again clicks. Landscapes are so much more relaxing but there is something that I feel I need to achieve with portraits. TY for sharing all your knowledge. I am looking forward to exploring so much w these videos.

    Three reasons why I subscribe to this channel 1) I’m a busy portrait artist who uses pastel and I lover Emma’s teaching technique.... 2) (in two parts) I’m fascinated by the idea of touring Europe in a Motorhome (part one) and my beloved wife is also from Northern Ireland and I love the people (part 2) and most importantly 3) Emma is an amazing animal/pet portrait artist who is equally good painting human studies and landscapes!…true class...keep up the amazing work Emma...your true supporter...Jim

    Incredible Emma! I have studied Portrait in pastels, and they teach me in a different way, and the truth is, that it has fascinated me, how you can merge all those colors, shadows and lights! You are an incredible artist! I loved those shadow colors and midtones that you used for the sketch, I still don't understand how you can
    take a pastel stick, and add color in small areas! Wow! Amazing! This is how a real pastel portrait is made!!!🤍🤍🤍😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤❤❤❤💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

    A couple of things I really like about this. The green that seemed so strong at the start looked just right at the end. Also the texture left in the highlights gave it a natural skin look. Great video.👍

    An illuminating class! So many aha! moments and I love observing what can emerge from the use of transparent layering. The subject has fascinating richness of character and it’s a brilliant and engaging lesson in many ways. I would very much like to see the process of finishing the hair. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in such a comprehensible way. I enjoyed the lovely birdsongs and distant voice sounds in the background. Transportive to your painting environment and a pleasant added layer of spatial reality.

    How do you identify your pastels after you remove the label? I've had this question for a while and now it's good time to ask as I'm watching this tutorial 😊

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  4 роки тому +10

      It's good to start keeping a chart of the colours you buy. A sheet of paper with a scribble of the colour and it's code name beside it. Then you can always identify your pastels without labels. Unison make their own handmade chart which I have and it helps me identify all their colours, but you can do this too as you buy them.

    fail to hold a lot of pastel, Thank you Emma .

    • @EmmaColbertArt

      I like 3 different pastel papers for most of my work. Hahnemühle Velour (which is what this portrait is on) Clarefontaine Pastelmat, and Fisher 400. First two I like a lot for portraits and they all hold a lot of layers of pastel.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 роки тому

      Thank you! I would say experiment with whatever you have. Pans are great for lower layers just like I do with the sticks. I love their blenders but they don't work great on this paper, velour. I'd recommend Pastelmat paper for the Pans which mix great with the soft pastels too. I just love the sticks and the variety of marks you can make.

    Soft pastels and hard pastels ..dry pastels oil pastels ...can anybody say the diference ...sorry 4 my bad english ..greetings from Mexico

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 роки тому +2

      Your English is great. This is quite confusing to everyone. Soft pastel is the medium I use. There is 'soft pastel' and 'oil pastel'. The soft pastels don't contain any oil, they are mostly pigment and a binder. The better quality soft pastels have high pigment content. The soft pastels feel dry to use while the oil pastels are sticky. But within the 'soft pastel' range they go from quite hard sticks to really soft sticks. I hope that makes sense!

    Emma, you have too many areas highlighted with equal intensity . Its as though a flash has gone off . Only one area should be maximum contrast /highlight --all the others should be much less. Look at the LH side . It 's all wrong. The drawing is right but there is no recession
    of tone or colour value . It all needs darkening and the long highliight removed . Its as though you are trying too hard . Look at the whole image as you work and only add highlights towards the end . Not trying to be negative just honest .. Go to Google images and find a 'Louis Anquetin 'self portrait with pipe ' . Just really clever work Jonny
