EV Charging My Motorhome

- In today's I'm showing you how to charge your motorhome with EV charging which is flipping incredible, it's so cheap and simple to thanks to the Juicy Brucie cable.
I've been using the cable now for over a year now can't recommend it enough, I've been using it with the PodPoint app mainly in Tesco carparks where you normally get 3 hours free parking.
Using the PodPoint has been super great value for just using electricity, I mean there's times that I really don't need to use a camp site which range from £20-£40+ a night whereas I can fully recharge my system and use loads at the same time for less than £5!
Some Tesco and other carparks around the country have added the option to pay to stay longer in via the YourParkingSpace App which I show in this video. You can get 24 hours in a tesco carpark like I show in this video for just £3.50 which I think is a pretty great deal.

As an EV driver it’s great to see chargers being utilised at quite times, keep up the good work😊
It will give an alternative income stream that will possibly encourage other places to install charges, so EV owners will gain.
Yep, chargers will report back faults that little bit sooner so hopefully they'll be fixed by the time they get busy again.
This cable is great, I've had one for over a year and it works great. Sadly though most british built motorhomes have a 10 amp onboard mains charger, so it'd take a long time to charge their hab battery on hookup. The best upgrade you can do to your motorhome is fit a better quality, and higher output, mains charger as it's going to look after your hab battery much better and it's going to charge much faster. The Victron 30A mains charger works with all battery types and Daz can pop a link below to where you can get one, it's an easy installation with just 2 wires to connect the charger to your hab battery and you're sorted.
Obviously once you have upgraded your mains charger you can then make better use of Bruce's brilliant EV charge cable.
Yeah you're right John, it's a shame they still fit very small main chargers on new motorhomes and campervans but like you say there is a pretty simple upgrade that I would get done straight away. This is the link to the one you just mention, not to expensive like you say will definitely do the job - amzn.to/3S8z7tF
Cheers mate!
I’d guess it’s another ARROW in your quiver. Is the electricity cheap at Podpoint? I guess it’s a good fall back position for an end of week top up.👍
John, you are the best in helping people all over the world and we are grateful for that. Do you know if there is a way to replace a CBE 516 wit the Victron ?
Where do I get cable?
As an EV owner, I can tell you that I do not have an issue with these cables. The reason is that you are using slow chargers; these chargers take 15 hours to charge my car, so I rarely use them. If I do use them, it is because they are convenient parking spaces, so it is worth plugging in. As far as the cost of the cable, it is crucial to understand that Bruce uses the correct EV spec cable in his leads (not 240v mains cable), which is expensive, and the Type 2 connectors are expensive. The cables are handmade and tested by a fellow Vanlifer in the UK, and you are not only doing yourself a favor, but you are supporting his business. Thanks, Darran, for shedding more light on this device and its benefits.
You're most welcome mate and thank you for comment, it is true for the EV guys (my friend just got nd electric van for work so been learning loads) these 7KW & 22KW podpoints are really really slow charging when it comes to cars and vans but for me with my juicy brucie its perfect haha and yeah Bruce has put so much time, effort, research and love into this product each one being hand made and tested by himself before sending it out you can't beat that.
@@TheUrbanMotorhome I know he put a lot of time into looking at the legal aspects and the regulation requirements for the cables. It would be nice if the 7Kw chargers actually gave out 7Kw, but they never do.
@@PhilandBex The chargers in my home town do, as I can put in 21Kw in three hours.
Cheers Phil
Nice, as long as you pay for the service, go for it.
As a EV driver it's good that the destination chargers are used. The more use the better.
For EV drivers, charges like this one is for when you on a road trip and are staying for some hours.
You can also buy smaller cables/adapter so you can connect the regular extension cord in to it.
I've just received my Juicy Brucie cable. Great bit of kit, and thank you for the discount code.
Ahhhh nice one mate! yeah banging bit of kit, your gonna love using it, so cheap and easy, your most welcome mate 👍🏻👊🏻
Another heads up - It was on TV last week that a few people received PCNs for charging / parking during the closed hours of the store. The max stay is different than when the store is open (unless it's a 24hr one of course) - I'd double check the signage not just the ones by the charge bays but in the rest of the car park.
Great idea Darren- I want one! I have had an ev and a moho for the last 4 years and I have no problem sharing the charge points. Live and let live. Thanks mate very useful
As an EV owner, I fully support this!
As you say, don't be an aubergine.
If ther's noe mor stations to hook up to, and some EV needs it, then it's nice to let them.
Otherwise, as long as you are a paying customer, I see no issues at all.
What I actually would like however is if for camp sites to be more accepting towards EV's charging.
If I want to put up a tent over night at at camping site, they would usually say that power is reserved for RVs and caravans, and not for EV charging.
I would love to put up my tent, and pay whatever they want to hook up my EV to charge over night, and start the next day with full/decent range on the battery.
Apparently they don't want EV drivers with tents. At least I'll go somewhere else.
Agreed. One hand washes the other...
Thanks daz for a really in depth assessment, when I can it will be a juice brucie for our needs. 👊👍🏴🚌
Brilliant video honey and bought one straight away as you just never know especially in the winter xx
Wow brilliant Darren, at least their being used cos i rarely see electric vehicles using them, great x
Looks Interesting 🧐
Will look into this Thanks
Finding your videos informative
The adapter from evconnectors is a lot cheaper at 138 pounds. You do need the 10m cable as well but most of us already have one for campsite hookups
What’s the web site
even cheaper elsewhere
I really like the idea except as we all know some people will abuse it - don’t see a problem with it at those times when the chargers are not in use as you said - great video Darren 👍😀
I know what your saying Steve and unfortunately your right but I wasn't not going to share it because of them very small select few that will always be there in every community not just ours, we just need to be clearly better than them and call them out when they abuse things and bring trouble. Thanks for watching mate
multiple methods which back each other up, I love it
My thoughts exactly mate, can never have too many redundancies
Thanks this will save me thousands I no longer need to buy a ecoflow delta pro with the infinity port which does exactly this 😂
Glad to help mate, I love the Juicy Brucie cable, Bruce is a legend!
Useful bit of kit that. So many times these things are left redundant overnight.
It really is and your right come evening time most "normal" people are home/charged so there not being used
Some motorhomers will use this facility at the wrong time . I guarantee that this will happen. They will be the same people who leave litter and dump grey/black water .
Of course but some people will always do something negative. That’s just human nature. It’s the same for a lot of park ups. There used to be one near me that a few vans lived in. Then people started dumping rubbish and shitting everywhere so now there’s barriers on the entrance.
Unfortunately this happens in each and every community, not just ours, there are always going to be that small few, bewilders me why people don't just do/say/act the way they would like it to them but hey ho.
Hi sorry nothing to do with video but really good , was wondering if you know anything about cobra alarms ?? We need to remove engine battery to do some work and not sure if doing so will set alarm off ? If so how do we go about it you know thanks for reading x
@@SueTurner-x9nput it in valet mode or disconnect with ignition on and door open
There is no wrong time to use electric charging, for Cars, Motorhomes or anything else. Don't be greedy wait and have patience 🙏
That cable is brilliant, I usrd it alreadym And Tesco is a good one for this.
I know mate I love it!
I'd love to see events that are held on closed-off streets use cables like these (instead of generators or dodgy cabling hanging out of windows) if a charging-point is available.
Great vlog Darren interesting Chris/ Jan
Interesting video thank for sharing 👍
Where do i get this cable Darren?
Since you are “The Urban Motorhome” look for the on street changing points in Lamp posts and bollards and hook your motorhome up there. You will be in your natural habitat and they tend to be the cheapest.
Haha I love it, I'll keep my eyes out for them and when I find one I'll do a video haha
That Tesco’s is literally 2 minutes up the road you could’ve nipped in for a coffee😂
Hiya 👋🏻 I've been using EV chargers in UK for last few months and in EU (France and Spain currently). Networks in France and Spain are a few times bigger and easier to use. Just one app and go!! 🎉
And YES!! The same plug in UK and EU!!! 😂😂😂
That's cool to know mate, so have you been using the juicy brucie over in EU?
I think Eric talaska AKA eco neato is probably one of the first ones to do something like this im doing this as i type this have been for 2 years or so now using j1772 charging stations
Your Parking Space terms, just a watch out, on the terms of Your Parking Space it states : to ensure that the relevant vehicle is parked fully in the parking space, without obstructing any adjoining or nearby parking spaces or property; Normally not an issue, but if the stores parking attendant comes around (Horizon Parking Ltd) by terms of the parking conditions you could be issued a parking ticket for being over the white lines of the parking bay. Also Your Parking Space dont put signs in all Tesco car parks. Hope this helps
Thanks for the heads up mate
Hi Daz, I've ordered a EV charge cable for our motorhome and agree it could be a game changer. It has a "Type 2" plug. I've since noticed that some EV charge points that have type 2, are tethered and some are untethered. Can you only use untethered charge points, or can you connect your cable to the cable coming from a tethered charge point. Cheers.
I was charging my campervan at a Tesco Podpoint and someone came up and started ranting and ran off to get security telling me I'd be fined for using an EV parking space. The security guard came over and spoke to me nicely and I explained it was an electric campervan. The security guard then started at the ranter to complain he was wasting his time. People need to talk, not go off on a rant.
Great video is the cable out of stock?.
I do the same with asda tbh. Actually rang the parking company, woman on the phone said it’s the main reason we do it, brings money in for the likes of asda, and of course the parking company, but they don’t advertise it so there not overrun.
Ahhh nice one, thanks for the info mate.
@@TheUrbanMotorhome you wonder why a lot more car parks don’t do it.. especially council ones too make money..
Do you have to switch to leisure battery on your controller panel for it to charge? Might be a silly question I'm a newbie 😊
Great video bud, thank you! 😊
Thanks mate
From the point of the EV charger provider, I don't see why they wouldn't allow this. It's extra cash for them at the end of the day and I'm sure there's plenty of safety features and checks to ensure it will work before allowing you to do so. I also hope campsites who think it's acceptable to charge £10-20 for hookup take note... As this would use a lot more Kw's than they'd provide on a normal hookup.
Just to let you know I have downloaded the parking app and I have found it very useful, I have parked at Tesco in Honiton and then B&Q Taunton. Both cost 2.50 plus 49p admin. The B&Q was very secure as they locked the car park when the store was was closed. Nobody approached me, I felt very secure. I have a 12 litre LPG tank. But when I am of grid the fridge uses a lot of gas the heating takes a lot less . How do you run your fridge? Mine is a large fridge Freezer and a full tank only lasts about 4 days. Any suggestions? Penny
You made me laugh. Why go to sainsburys when you're in tesco 😂😂 😊
I was looking at a charging cable but checking various locations I couldn't find EV chargers with sockets, they were all tethered. Apart from Tescos where else do you find them?
There was mention down below of using the right type of EV cable, yet the socket going to your camper looks like a 16A (230V) commando socket which will only have L,N+E, therefore is there any need to use a cable with any more cores than is required for connection to the motor home? Or am I missing something?
Don't you need also a male-to-male Mennekes Type 2 cable for those stations that have a charging cable coming out of them?
Do you have a contact method to be able to purchase one of those cables please
You said it would take around 5hrs to charge you batteries from flat using the Juicy Brucie cable. How long would it take to charge just by running the engine???
Hi Richard, yeah so these aren't exact workings out but here goes, my multiplus charger is set to 100amps and my batteries are 460AH so that would be just under 5 hours. When it comes to my DC2DC they are 2 x 30A so 60amp an hour at best, remember this goes up and down depending on the engine and all that good stuff but if I got a straight 60A an hour it would be best part of 8 hours which is a hell of a lot of driving or a crazy long time to leave the engine running, I have no idea how much that would cost in diesel but even if it was 50p (stupid i know) i would never run my engine like that for that long.
Hope this help mate
Many modern alternators will only output 40A on tick-over to stop then overheating (thermal protection). Also, leaving your engine idling for hours is not good for modern engine
Excellent video Darren thank you. I won’t be a dick 😂😂
Would Bruce’s cable be ok for charging a portable solar charger eg. BLUETTI 2000w from a shoreline connection within my van with a Victron 30amp charger?
The Juicy Brucie cable essentially takes an EV point and turns it into a 13A shore power extension. So if you had a 13A conversion plug on the end you could plug any device including your Bluetti
The electricity idea is pretty brilliant. My problem is I refuse to use any apps for parking or any other cash is king stop promoting the rip-off apps
Ive seen the same cable being sold for wayyyyyyyy less, under £100. The reviews for them are great also... have you any experiences with other cables darren?
I have no experience with other cables so can’t comment on them, but what I can say is as I’ve know Bruce for ages and he’s a good friend I’ve been privy to the ins and outs of how the cable is made and the the parts he’s using and I can honestly say he’s using the best parts and they don’t come cheap, he puts them together himself and personally tests them on all on his own van before sending them out. That to me is peace of mine and gives be confidence and comfort using it over any small saving. Just my 2 pennies worth 😁👍🏻
so whats differance between leisure battery and ev system ansd is it cheaper than buying new leisure battery
The EV cable and connector simply allows power to be sent to your motorhome/campervan to charge your leisure battery, whether that be lead acid or lithium. While charging, you can also run your appliances because your literally plugged into mains power; just like on a camp site.
It’s a very beefy piece of kit I’ve got, that’s what he said 😂 😊
Your a brave man putting this video up as the keyboard warriors have started 😂😊
haha thanks mate, ahhh haters are gonna hate aint they
As an EV driver I have mixed feelings about this. I'm not against it, if anything it's a good idea for motor homes etc and you're paying for what you're using and I'm glad you're trying not to be an inconvenience to people but no doubt there will be some anti EV idiots who see this and decide to try and block up charging stations especially when people really need them
I have tried selling to responsible people. I have been selling the cable for a whole year now and so far I think everyone is being responsible.
@@BruceLauderdale I'm glad to hear that. I've considered getting an adapter like this to turn my home charger into an outside socket. I think it'd be useful for things like when I jet wash the driveway
I really hope that doesn't happen and like bruce has said he's only selling to responsible people and I couldn't stress enough don't confront anyone, pack up, walk away and I think they will because it's not "ours" and they understand that. Thanks for watching mate.
Mel did a similar video
I remember that
Another reason why the charging network needs to vastly improve. It’s just not keeping up with demand
Youre about the 4th youtuber ive seen advocating this so guaranteed that every vanlife channel will be selling it soon.
It'll be abused soon enough and clamped down on thereafter
Hi I have just downloaded the parking app trying out around my local area it only seems give me a 1 or 2 hour or a monthly option 10:40
Hi Bob, ahhh that's a bit strange I've not come across that issue, I've just always scrolled down the hours to 12/24, are you changing the second date to tomorrow?
Can this be used a an EHU cable just as if you were at a campsite
No because it has a fixed Type2 EV connection on the one end. However if you had an EHU to 13A socket (brick) you could technically use it as an extension cord. An expensive extension cord though.
When it's hooked up from the EV station to your campervans EHU point Ian, it is technically supplying power to your motorhome/campervan just like it being connected at a campsite. I think Bruce didn't understand what you where asking, saying that, perhaps he did and I did not. Anyway, I hope you got more clarity with both answers to your question, Chris.
Just say you are a traveller and then they will let you stay there for a week, leave your rubbish behind and go to the toilet in the bushes.
Regarding EV owners whinging about Motorhome owners using EV points.....You are paying for the facility, it doesn't matter if your are driving an Electric VW Golf, an electric golf cart, or a motorhome....you are simply a customer for electric.
What Tesco is that mate looks like Gloucester, if that is could of come said hi
Quedgeley
You never said how long it takes to charge your batteries if you just drove about for a while. That then would demonstrate the benefit of doing this. £200 for a cable is quite an expense to offset. I own an ev and don't see any problem with campers charging as long as they stick to only these slow chargers at off times.
Hi Toby, your not the only one to ask this question, sorry I didn't put it in the video, anyway here's the answer.
So these aren't exact workings out but here goes, my multiplus charger is set to 100amps and my batteries are 460AH so that would be just under 5 hours. When it comes to my DC2DC they are 2 x 30A so 60amp an hour at best, remember this goes up and down depending on the engine and all that good stuff but if I got a straight 60A an hour it would be best part of 8 hours which is a hell'of a lot of driving or a crazy long time to leave the engine running, I have no idea how much that would cost in diesel but even if it was 50p (stupid i know) i would never run my engine like that for that long.
Hope this answers your question mate, I know it seems steep for a cable but the amount of times I've used it to topup and you all my cooking/gadgets and not needed to go to a costly camp site is wicked.
Haha you parked in Tesco and shopped in sainsbury. 😂
This has been a bit of a discussion point on forums.... Seems to be two opposing options.... 1) "you don't have an EV. How dare you!" (Usually made by people who have a Camper AND an EV); and 2) "What's the problem using it if noone else is not?" (Usually made by normal folk :) ).
If the cable was cheaper I would for sure get one.
Not heard of "Your Parking Place" App before. Downloaded it ... Dead handy, not just for overnighting but even for supermarket parking for a while day if looking around a town without having to move after 2 or 3 hours. Checked out local ASDA ... Could have 24 hours for £2.00! But are there restrictions about sleeping? The sign often says "no camping" or whatever, but it also says "no staying over 2 hours" - but you are paying to get rid of that time limit so maybe nothing on sign will apply once you have paid?
Hi. I’ve used it for a couple of years. The rules for each space/booking is described in the app. I just check it says ‘overnight parking allowed’. I’ve never notice any mention of ‘no camping’ etc but of course I’m as stealth as possible when I arrive so I don’t attract attention. It’s also good for booking private spaces. I’ve even used a few church car parks in the past.
So far I’ve had no problems 😊
I have a camper and an EV... I think it's a great idea, especially in the UK winter period when there is no way solar alone is going to cut it for long off-grid periods. Yes, it is best avoid peak times for a recharge. Some of the EV brigade will definitely get shirty in peak hours. Whereas I'd come over for a chat😄
@davidl1338 Yeah I mean it was never gonna be a walk in the park was it, nothing today is, there always arguing about something but hey ho, i would par-take I'll just unplug and leave, can't be arsed to argue with anyone.
Yeah the parking app is great especially for staying somewhere for extra time while your out sightseeing or something, being able to get the bike out the back and go or grab a bus and know the moho is parked legally and relatively safe is a great feeling. Like @andreablurton1972 said as long as it say overnight parking allowed which I'm pretty sure if you can book it that means it is then your good, like he said I try not to attract attention when I'm parked up (not charging), blinds down and all that and I've not had any problems.
@darrenmoore7224 Your right mate winter solar just sucks over here and it's a great addition in the tool box to have at this time of year.
@@TheUrbanMotorhome Had a play with it (the app!) and I could book 7 days continuous parking at the ASDA in Berwick for £10.50! Now not saying you would want to spend 7 days in an ASDA carpark or even 7 days in Berwick, but does suggest these Supermarket carparks with the "2 hour" limits can actually work out handy at very little extra cost.
I don't see any problem using this weather you're an EV or not.... You're a paying customer at the end of the day!!
I'd have thought that fancy new system of yours would be ok with solar and driving to keep you topped up. Is it because of the lack of sun in winter? Do you still need to do this in summer?
Hi Dan, my system does fine keeping me topped up, ok the solar isn't great this time of year but soon as it comes out its banging. I don't need this cable to survive, it's just a lovely cheap and simple alternative to going to a campsite when I don't need anything. It's redundancy, having more and more options to do everything just gives you choices and makes life sooooo much easier.
I'm glad you're happy with that outcome however.... that's 44p a kw! You're getting about 10 to 13 miles of range in nearly 2.5 hours! Assuming you get at least 2.5 miles per Kw, which you'll be lucky in the winter pulling that van. That's hardly enough to get to the next charger! 🤣That is not that cheap motoring! It would be about the same in wet fuel costs and MUCH more expensive using fast chargers. I'm EV and an oil burner owner btw.
I’m not using it to drive the motorhome, it’s simply recharging the house batteries for everything inside, the MoHo runs on diesel and gets about 25mpg 😊👍🏻
He isn't using it to drive the vehicel. It's a diesel motorhome. It's just for the hab side as and when you need it.
It's a diesel motorhome. He's just charging the leisure batteries.
@@TheUrbanMotorhome Ok. Thank you for clarifying :)
Bruce is making big deal to send cables outside uk. What a pity We had to buy a generator
I can't quite figure out why you seem nervous about using a public charging point. It doesn't matter what a person is charging they have as much right as anyone else to charge whatever they want. If anyone doesn't like that tell them to f@#k off.
Arrow in your quiver! 🤦🏻♂️
after 14 minutes unplug and plug it back in. Don't bother downloading there app
