I can see them on my phone as I fly, but it's like seeing it for the first time when I come home and put it on the bigger screen of my computer.
Our family had a cottage near there for about 55 years so I know that beach well. There is another really cool one just further south, across from the public access area of Torch Lake but on Lake Michigan. It's just off US31across from a public entrance to Torch Lake. A tiny sign marks it as Traverse Bay Road and it's about 1/4 mile from the beach. There's hiking trails too. But we've found the coolest rocks ever on that little beach. My daughter was there in October and the water level was very high though so not sure what current conditions are. Anyway, as usual LOVED your video! Thanks, once again!
I'll have to check that one out. I wonder if my son and I went there about eight years ago? We made a couple trips to Lake Michigan and hit every beach we could find starting in Petoskey and working our way south. I think all the beaches we went to had names, so probably not.
I sure enjoyed your family video except I missed Bryan! Very educational with David along. I hope David and Allison can rock hunt here again, after the snow melts of course!
If you liked this beach, you should check out some of my other videos. This beach was not particularly productive, although I really enjoyed spending time there with my family.
Hi everyone! So nice to meet you all. ☺️I was going to just save the video for later cuz I’m getting ready for church but, I just couldn’t help myself and watch. 😁No I wasn’t late for church. ☺️
How wonderful to get to go rock hounding with your family. Then, to have one of them be a geologist! Bonus!! Now, with all five of you working together, maybe, just maybe, you can work together to bring that 'nicest of the nice' rocks to display in your garden 😏😉
Probably not as funny if you can't hear the real thing. I wish it didn't take hours to type out the captions, or I would do it. I have only done a couple.
Sometimes the captions are more entertaining than what is spoken. DrNat's videos are like that.... great for a chuckle and makes us wonder how they gets words sometimes. 😁
@@MichiganRocks don’t change a thing. I love your videos but listen with closed captioning because I’m taking care of my 86 and 87 year old parents. Their TV volume is excruciatingly high and sometimes I miss something I wanted to hear. 😊
They enjoy it in small quantities. After an hour or two, I'm just getting warmed up. A lot of people might not realize that for one of my typical beach videos, I'm usually on the beach for four or five hours. When you shave it down to a 15 or 20 minute video, it looks like an amazing beach.
We didn't take very much. We didn't have lots fo time, so we just barely went around the point. Does it get better if you walk farther? It was tough to turn around while it was still light out.
Nice video, and great explanation of the pegmatite! 👍 I may have to stop by there next summer to examine some of those gneiss boulders; they almost look migmatitic...
speaking geology, I'm going to have to read more about the Great Lakes area, you have all the volcanic rock , plus the sea life fossils, and sedimentary stuff associated, but your in the center of the continent, must be ancient long gone volcanos, and inland seas, mix that with glaciers and I bet its a cool story ! nice to meet the family !!
I think you have that about right. Lots of variety in this state, but it's a pretty big state. The volcanic stuff in the Keweenaw Peninsula is about seven hours from where I live by the sedimentary stuff.
How handy to have a geologist in the family, you lucky rockhound, you! Loved learning about pegmatite, that's a new one for me. Btw, if I put my chain coral in acid, what exactly happens? Does the other material get eaten away so that the chains become more pronounced? And what, typically, is the surronding material?
Did you see my video on that? The matrix is limestone, which dissolves in acid. You can either dissolve part of the limestone or let it all dissolve. It gets really fragile if you dissolve all of it. Next time you're in town, stop by and I'll show you two of them one done completely and one done partially. I'll also give you my bottle of acid. I don't use it much and it comes in a gallon jug. I think I have plenty to share. Here's that video: ua-cam.com/video/hjk3_KMLYXs/v-deo.html
RockHounds play a role in the geologic process. They find a rock, don't like it, throw it in the lake. Likewise, they find a rock, think it's cool, and take it. This constant churn makes room for new rocks to get uncovered by the waves
Can you talk a bit about how this lake wave action differs from ocean waves? I actually find the sound to be unpleasant, unlike the irregular roar of the ocean. Does it at all bother you guys?
I can't tell you how it differs, because I have only been to the ocean a few times and not at all recently. It doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I think the most common comment I get on videos like this is from people who find the sound of the waves to be very relaxing. I don't think there have been any comments like that on this particular video, so maybe something was different about the wave sounds in this video. Could be the wind that day, or maybe my recording wasn't as good for some reason. You should check out one of my other beach videos to see if you have the same reaction. You have me curious now.
@@MichiganRocks ok I will. Thx. I’m just astounded by the sheer variety of rock types you have there, gneiss and granite, pegmatite, chert, fossil corals, and those bright enigmatic green stones. I’m dying to go there and see it all for myself!
@@DragonHeartTree This beach didn't really have much variety compared to the beaches I usually hunt. Lake Superior has much more variety, and my favorite spot on Lake Huron has a lot of variety too. Michigan has a huge variety of rocks. The bedrock is different in different areas, and glaciers brought us a lot of fun stuff from Canada too.
That was a fun one. The beach itself wasn't that impressive compared to others in your videos. I was surprised being that far up North. Do you think it's picked over because of the campground?
Yes, the campground is all along where we were. The beaches were I find tons of great stuff are usually very remote. I also didn't walk as far as I usually do because we didn't have lots of time that day. I've been trying to get to a bigger variety of beaches to show people some more popular public beaches.
@@MichiganRocks thanks, I have watched several of your videos and see you tumble in coarse grit for months at a time. Can I buy coarse grit locally at home depot or farm and fleet instead of ordering in small quantities on line. I dont know of the local grit is the same.
@@tripplebeards3427 I wasn't aware that Home Depot sold grit. What kind of grit is it? For the coarse grind you want silicon carbide grit. 80, 60/90, and 46/70 are popular sizes. It's not green, it's gray. I guess it does look sort of green in the video. That is gneiss. It's pronounced "nice", so it also gives plenty of opportunities for corny rock puns.
According to the monks in Tibet, all things are living, including stones. That idea always comes to mind when you dip those poor Chain Coral stones in acid. Ouch! The trip was nice with more people included on your adventure. It would have been nicer with sunlight, but you do the best you can with what the weather throws at ya. Good job, but you know what. I'll bet you never dipped one of your favorite Puddin' Stones in acid. All of the Jasper pebbles would probably fall off.
I have only dipped three of those chain corals in acid. I dropped the first one on the floor and it shattered, so it had it the worst. The coral part actually was living at one point (by the standard definition of living, not the monk's definition), and it doesn't get eaten by the acid, so no harm done to the coral part. The third one was done this fall with some other fossils. I had seen a couple other types of fossils done with similar results but the ones I thought were that type just dissolved completely. I had fun video in progress, but I scrapped the whole thing when they didn't turn out at all.
I like that the trained geologist gets excited hunting the beach for stones, like the rest of us.
I'd be worried if he didn't get excited. Who wouldn't love looking for rocks?

It's fun to come home and see what the shots look like.
Me and my family just got back from there, found quite a few goodies, nice camping location as well.
That's great!
I sure enjoyed your family video except I missed Bryan! Very educational with David along. I hope David and Allison can rock hunt here again, after the snow melts of course!
We missed Bryan too. Bryan and Allison live a long way from each other!
Wow lovely trip and such beauty.
I hope you weren't late for church! Church before rocks!
Excelente vídeo!!! Feliz día a todos!!!
Gracias!
Awesome! Excellent hearing about the pegmatite origins, and *ahem* you could do some work on your gneiss puns ;).
David has a shirt that says "Gneiss Chert".
@@MichiganRocks 🤣
@@MichiganRocks Awww man! Now I know what I want for Christmas!
nice to know your family and great video plus video from your drone.
Thanks Thomas!
How wonderful to get to go rock hounding with your family. Then, to have one of them be a geologist! Bonus!! Now, with all five of you working together, maybe, just maybe, you can work together to bring that 'nicest of the nice' rocks to display in your garden 😏😉
You mean nicest gneiss. That sure would look nice in my yard. I do have a fairly large rock with big quartz veins going through it in my garden.
👍👍
For a little added enjoyment, watch the video with the captions on. Some of the translations are humorous. 😁
@@captpaul8827 I don't usually turn captions on. I've been missing all the fun.
LOVE THE GEMSTONES !
Nice family. Great family video!
Thanks Vic.
It's good your family enjoy Rockhounding
They enjoy it in small quantities. After an hour or two, I'm just getting warmed up. A lot of people might not realize that for one of my typical beach videos, I'm usually on the beach for four or five hours. When you shave it down to a 15 or 20 minute video, it looks like an amazing beach.
Now you did it....you gave away our favorite place to rockhunt!!!!! Can all of you save some for us? LOL. Great crew!!!
We didn't take very much. We didn't have lots fo time, so we just barely went around the point. Does it get better if you walk farther? It was tough to turn around while it was still light out.
@@MichiganRocks we've found our best rocks there a couple of years ago. We walked the opposite way. We were all over.
I enjoyed our little lesson on that big rock.
Me too!
Awesome family time👍
Yes it was!
That was special, thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
I like that place found a nice pink petosky stone there back in September.
I know it's a very popular place. This was only my second time there.
The best way to spend time with Son -in law 😊
Agreed! We plan to make more videos together next summer.
@@MichiganRocks I will be happy to see them.
Nice video, and great explanation of the pegmatite! 👍 I may have to stop by there next summer to examine some of those gneiss boulders; they almost look migmatitic...
There you go, making me look up words again.
@@MichiganRocks Sorry? 😁
@@captpaul8827 No need to be sorry. I looked up "migmatitic".
Great to see a family adventure and some interesting geologist commentary. Maybe he’ll rub off on you... lol.
It sure couldn't hurt if he rubbed off a little. I have a lot of geology to learn.
Our lucky day with this video just wish David would've said what of gems form in the big rock? Thank you....Enjoyed .
I don't think there are gems in this particular rock, but rather in some other pegmatites.
Depends on the chemistry of pegmatite. Some can have topaz, tourmaline, and various beryls. Unfortunately, this rock had none of those...
Nice to meet your family..great video..
Thanks Pam!
Love all the information!
speaking geology, I'm going to have to read more about the Great Lakes area, you have all the volcanic rock , plus the sea life fossils, and sedimentary stuff associated, but your in the center of the continent, must be ancient long gone volcanos, and inland seas, mix that with glaciers and I bet its a cool story ! nice to meet the family !!
I think you have that about right. Lots of variety in this state, but it's a pretty big state. The volcanic stuff in the Keweenaw Peninsula is about seven hours from where I live by the sedimentary stuff.
Cool! About to go to the beach and pick out some treasure myself. Been finding some cool Barites
I don't know if I've found barites before. Do you find those in Michigan?
@@MichiganRocks no I found them in Palos Verdes in Southern California
Lots of places for baryte in Michigan, including from the LaFarge Quarry right in Alpena.
@@captpaul8827 Really. I'll have to do a little looking.
That was very informative. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Your adorable wife love Petosky stones.....and me too.
My wife loves you too? I didn't even realize you knew each other!
Great vídeo Fron Brasil my dear
Thanks Alé!
Yaa muy bonito grandote fisherman's Islandia todos mi familia a hijos muy bien gracias sorda Lety escribí buenas noches 👍
¡Gracias!
Well that was fun!!!
Weeee!!!
Very nice family Rob.
Thanks Wil.
That was to much of a crew for that beach! Very nice!
We ganged up on that beach. Those rocks didn't have a chance.
Loved that. Rock hounders bringing a geologist along on a hunt. Bet he doesn't have 1000 names for all those agates 😂
No, he probably doesn't.
How nice!! Wonderful
We had a nice day together.
You need David with you more often!
Too bad he lives four hours away.
fun on vacation with family while looking for stones
That's what I thought!
Oooooo más buscadores de piedras presiosas que bien.
Ese fue un lindo día con mi familia.
RockHounds play a role in the geologic process. They find a rock, don't like it, throw it in the lake. Likewise, they find a rock, think it's cool, and take it. This constant churn makes room for new rocks to get uncovered by the waves
I'm glad I can help out!
Tha was a good video and gneiss stones/rocks.
Very gneiss day all around.
Looks like your son in law was hand picked by you! Anyway, you'll never run out of conversation. You have a beautiful family!
I didn't choose him, but I'm glad my daughter did!
Can you polish pegmatite rocks? I found one with a fish fossil in it and was debating on tumbling it.
If it has a fish fossil in it, then it's not pegmatite. I haven't tumbled fish fossils or pegmatite, so I don't know what to advise you.
I buy my coarse grit from Kingsley North in 45 lb. bags. It's right around $100 shipped.

@@MichiganRocks I saw Home Depot listed a 25 pound pail of sand blasting 40 grit for $25. I also found a 50 pound bag of this at farm and fleet for $9. I was going to make a joke about finding a box of Trump ballots floating in the water but I decided not to :) LOL
Good plan. We don't discuss politics much around here, and everyone is happy. Coincidence?
@@MichiganRocks They say politics ruins everything and they are right :)
@@politicalfoolishness7491 Amen!
What was the name of the large green rock by the camp site
شكرا لك
