Hello Yves, as for the hotel with the resident and non resident rate, this applies in mid to high end hotels, parks, museums, reserves, conservancies etc. It is under the ministry of tourism under the tourism act and was a way to encourage local tourism,It has nothing to do with race. It applies to all foreigners even from other African countries. Such establishments are also registered under the Kenya Tourism board which regulates their pricing. It is different from the low end places which you have been staying and cater more to the low end locals and not so much tourists. That being said it is not ideal and it is something that the government has been asked to look into. Hopefully they can revise this as it's not common practice around the world. As for people who keep asking you for money, believe it or not it happens to us kenyans as well. Anytime you are in a rural area or an area where people think or assume you are well off they will ask you for money. It just doesnt apply to 'mzungu' however it becomes more outstanding when you are different. If you go to some low end places in the western world people will ask you for 'change'.for those of us who travel, you will experience all sorts of things it all depends on how you take it. You are exceptional, positive and adapt quite well to your surroundings. Am kenyan and have truly enjoyed your interactions with the locals. Safe journey. Staying tuned.
In Swahili or east Afrika, you start counting time from 7am or 7pm. 7am is the first hour of the day, so it is saa moja. 7pm is the first hour of the night, so it is saa moja ya usiku.
