＜あらすじ＞
光源氏が立ち寄った伊予介の屋敷で、伊予介の後妻空蝉に惹かれ強引に一夜を共にします。
その後、文を送ってくる源氏に空蝉は全く取り合いません。
暫く後に、伊予介の屋敷を訪れた源氏は空蝉と軒端の荻が碁を打っているのを垣間見て
夜更けに寝所へ忍び込むも察知した空蝉は衣を残し抜け出します。
それとは知らぬ源氏は衣に残った香で
空蝉のやるせない思い、恋と云うものの切なさ辛さを空蝉の側から描いた能です。

＜Story＞
He stops at the residence of Ki-no-Kami where he sees Iyonosuke’s stepwife, Utsusemi, and is attracted to her.
He persuades her to spend the night with him.
Subsequently, he sends her many letters asking to see her again. Utsusemi ignores his approaches.
Hikaru-Genji visits the residence again and sees two women playing go. At night, he sneaks into Utsusemi’s bedroom. She notices he is coming and gets out of the room leaving her night dress and her step daughter behind.
Hikaru-Genji spends the night with the step daughter, Nokiba-no-Ogi.
In the dark, the dress smells of Utsusemi so he confuses the two women.
The story shows Utsusemi’s complicated feelings toward Hikaru-Genji and describes the sadness, pain, and frustration of love from Utsusemi’s perspective.
