Our poker tutorial is a great way to learn the card game loved by millions.
Hey, I'm Nicky Numbers, a Professional Poker Player, whose going to talk to you today, about the best starting hands in poker. Now, when most people are talking about poker, they mean No Limit Hold Em. The best starting hands in that game are, big cards, and big pairs. So, hands like Ace, King. Especially Ace, King, suited are incredibly valuable.
This is a true, premium hand. Another example would be pocket Queens. Any pocket pair of Tens, or higher, is going to be a premium one. Hands like Ace, Queen, are also incredibly valuable, because they flop top pair regularly. Ace, King, for example, flops top pair, 30 percent of the time. Big pocket pairs have tremendous value because often they're an over pair to the board, and when they're not an over pair to the board, sometimes they flop sets, which are really strong hands. A set is when you have a pocket pair, and then a third card that matches these two, comes on the board, so, you have three of a kind. Now, these are traditionally thought of as the categories of hands that are premium holdings. Pocket Tens are better, Ace, King, Ace, Queen. You only get dealt one of these hands, 4.7 percent of the time. That's about once, every other round, if there's ten people at your table. So, these are infrequent occurrences. If this is all you play, you're going to end up playing way too tight. There are other hands that also play well in No Limit Hold Em, and have tremendous value. And the deeper stacked you get, meaning the more big blinds you have, the better these other hands will play.
Hands like pocket Deuces. A pocket pair is going to flop two pair, or better, about 12 percent of the time. It's an incredibly powerful hand, and the most likely hand of any, to flop a monster, pocket pairs. Another valuable hand is suited connectors, cards that are directly connected to each other, and are of the same suit. So, they're sequential, like, Six, Seven. Another example, would be a suited one gapper, like Seven, Five, or, a suited two gapper, like Seven, Four. Cards that have no gaps, and are directly connected, have one gap, or two gaps, and are suited, have tremendous play ability in No Limit Hold Em. For example, a true suited connector, like, Four, Five suited through Jack, Ten suited, is going to hit the flop to make a big hand, or a draw of Eight outs or more, about a quarter of the time. On the surface, it looks like you only have Seven high, but these cards work tremendously well together, and create a synergy that results in the hands having a lot of value in their ability to continue passed the flop. Another example, is a suited Ace, like Ace, Six, or Ace, Deuce.
These cards work in a very similar way to suited connectors, suited one gappers, and suited two gappers. Basically, you want to play hands that are able to continue pass the flop, regularly. And when I say continue pass the flop, regularly, I mean continue pass the flop in a comfortable way. Imagine having a hand on the flop, and your opponent makes a bet, and you're comfortable continuing to call, or raise. Imagine being on the flop, and making a bet, and your opponent raises you. And you're able to comfortably continue by calling that raise, or, even re-raising them back. That's what you're looking for when you're picking hands, pre-flop. Hands that interact with the flop in multiple ways, and are often able to continue passed the flop, and regularly go to show down. - Навчання та стиль

Middle card connectors (cards 7 to J suited) are a great starting hand. High enough to make a five card hand and low enough for opponents to not suspect you have a hand.
Top 10 starting Hands mathematically proven: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKs, AKo, AQs, AJs, KQs and TT(pair of 10s)
KQs is better than AQo?
Yeap
AstoundingPilot -SW- yes, low pairs(99 - 22) have mathematical advantage against all nonpair cards BUT if ur playing with 2 or 3 players. if ur sitting 5, 6 or 9 players table u have no mathematical advantage against AJ or KQ. I prefer 9 players table, most of Texas holdem players prefer crowded tables. so im right, these are the best 10.
AstoundingPilot -SW- and yes.. 99, 88, 77 ... 22 have big advantage against nonpair cards if u made 3 of A kind in flop(%12 chance by the way). Example: my hand AKs, your starting hand 22.
Flop: A 2 K
I had 2 pairs but u had triple. U ll win this hand %75 chance!. BUT if flop smiles to you.
KQs better than ATs?
I looked at this video. Started playing. first hand is Q4 off suit. Folded before the flop due to bets. And whats the flop? Q44. Argh!
+kavin20 i had the same thing
Variance is a thing 😋 Just remember to play smart all the time rather than risky most of the time.
next time go all in when you get Q4 again
The pain is real. Folded 84 off pre-flop last night and flopped 888.
Did you go on tilt because of that lol
In reality, ppl lose a lot of money with AK.
I'm pretty sure the odds are actually really good for AK
Billswax
probably. its just hard to make money off AK, while its easier to lose more with it. For example, you hit your top pair top kicker, hardly anyone will pay you, since the ace or king on board will scare them off majority of the time. unless, they got you beat with something better, in which case you find it hard to lay down and lose bigger money than you would win with the hand. Of course, a good player would find a way around this issue!
+MugenTJ You are 100% correct! Never play AK again, ever.
Chavy Cash joke if you like. do that yourself if you feel like it. I simply mean its actually hard to profit from the hand. hence its a fun problem to overcome.
AK has a ton of equity, especially AKs. Even if the flop is 2 4 9 rainbow, you can continue with overcards and the back door flush draw pretty regularly.

Never play 22 that will save you a lot of pain.

Depends on your position
I raise with 22 depending on my position, otherwise I limp in
22 have a higher chance of winning preflop than AK or anything that is not a pair.
But small pairs are suitable for heads up, not when there are 6 people.
Nice, thanks

nice table.
I tend to always play even the small hands. I’m really comfortable at playing them, the likes of 5 and 7, 7 and 9, 2 and 4
What about a 7 and a 2?
One of the worst hands possible, especially off suited. Either need 7 and 2 to make 2 pair or better and your best would be a straight(flush) which will mean 3 4 5 6 (suited) as the table.
GompyyNL lmao
That is true however if you do hit 2 pair or better with 7 2 you will probably get paid off. On top of that you are rarely domiated unless agaist a big pocket pair.
EricSmyth14 If you win a hand with 7,2, every body has to give you a big blind.
+Arthur Lima (CrazyBarPB) Cards that aren't suited... so like say K spades and Q diamonds is offsuit and K diamonds and Q diamonds are suited. Basically two cards not the same suit.

Hi guys in the comments, I am a beginner poker player and I have a question for you:
In a NL Texas Hold'Em game, after the flop, as the first person to bet, are you allowed to bet less than the value of the big blind?
I'll make an example: the blinds are 100/200. After the first betting round the flop is shown and the first person to bet, bets just 50. Can he/she do that? Or does he/she have to bet
at least 200? Same question for turn and river.
Thank you in advance!
great video. very helpful with my game. i do pretty good. normally in the bubble on final table but hard to dominate most times
it also depends on how many people are playing at the table right?

Knowing when to call, raise, check, fold and all in (even if you're bluffing) improves your winrate by alot against other amateurs/less experienced players. Reading is a big factor too when it comes to live poker.
My only issue with live players that are amateurs is that their reads are all over the place. They're so jumpy and excited i can't tell good from bad.
+BlankJack Against players that are jumpy and excited the best way is pretty much never bluff against them, if they get a pair of anything they think they have the nuts, so don't go c-betting the flop with AK when you miss cause they will call you down all the way with their pocket 3's but when you do hit a flop bet bigger than you normally would.
Weak players tend to overvalue their hands, and very rarely bet with anything but their best hands and call with their weak to medium hands so if they raise or re-raise you then you should probably fold and if you get a medium hand be more willing to value bet on all streets.
Also weak players tend to play too many hands pre-flop the best way to counter this is play tighter, but when you do get a hand raise bigger than you would normally.
@@TikePeg with bad players or amatures that you cant read use pot control while drawing & trap them...
I always go all in

J9 baby!
a5 suited is a very good hand to push hard preflop with. the equity against any hand besides aces is usually above 30%. Oftentimes if you 3 bet or 4 bet or even shove with it, you will get better hands to fold and if you do get called, you usually will always have at least a 30% chance to win the hand. a5 suited. wonderful hand
My biggest pot ever was A-4 suited. Flopped the flush and the board never paired, guy betting into me the whole time until the river, when I went all in. He called and mucked.
Nickynumbers........ wow.....
When in doubt all in
What about offsuited connectors or one gappers?
those are really rag hands.. your only chance is to make a straight and if you ever make a flush, with just one card, chances are someone will have a higher flush.. unless the price if very cheap to see the flop or if the pot odds are extremely good (everyone limps and it only costs you 2$ for a 20$ pot) those are usually snap fold
Oh it’s this guy again.
On PokerStars any pocket cards are the best expect mine.
If someone 3 bets a pretty high amount, is AQoffsuit a callinghand or a folding hand.
Depends on the player raising, your position, and your chip stack. In a raised pot with A-Q off suit, I hate calling. If I am not in a spot where I can raise and maybe get some people to fold, I usually just let it go. I try to limit difficult decisions post flop.
22 on WSOP 2016 if I remember correctly lost 100% of the time. I general pick something really high, or a part of combination.
Hi nicky
I made the mistake of folding 4 - 8 non suited the other night when I wasn’t part of the blind. The flop was 8 - 8 - queen 🤦♂️😂. Would have won with triple 8’s. The guys who called or raised had won with 2 pair. Ended up losing my buy in two hands later when the small blind of $40 made me go all in with a 3 - 7.
not a mistake
Off suit low numbers are risky bro
all hands are good depending on position, opponents and pot odds
I don't know much about poker, but I do know that pocket aces is the best hand

off-suit deuce seven FTW
Is this the as Texas hold'em?
yes
I hate small pairs. I throw them in sometimes and it seems to work out good
question: I watched the 2016 wsop and the announcers kept joking about the folly of pocket jacks. and it did seem that most everyone who pressed ahead with pocket jacks lost the round. nothing is said about jacks here. was that just a thing happening at that wsop, or is that a real thing about pocket jacks being a dangerously confident hand?
Pocket jacks in my opinion are strong pre flop but you cannot fall in love with them post flop. Usually at least one over card out there for starters. Always proceed with caution. People forget that pairs are weak in general. Pay attention to betting patterns at the table. If you have pocket jacks and you raise pre flop and get called or raised and then an Ace or King comes in the flop how do you feel about your pair of jacks now? exactly.
I mostly win with Jack's these are my lucky cards
What about against A.I?
My problem is when i play good hands nothing comes and when i fold bad hands like 9 3 off or 10 2 off they come on the board like three of a kind or a full house.my luck is really bad i guess
If you are unable to get any read on anyone and you just have to pay the blind what is the worst hand you should play with?
guys please help quickly
who will win in this case or we split:
ME: 7 J
Friend: 8 9
Table: K K Q K Q
Please help who win the pot or we have to split and why?
you split. it's the best 5 card combination. out of the 7 available to play. 2 in your hand and 5 on the table. both best 5 cards are on the table. so you split
Everytime i get Q J suited, I get 3 of an opposite suit so Q and J hearts no hearts on the flop
how to get a royal flush?
how many times did he say tremendous?
Im not a pro. But im almost every time play with these kind of cards.
If xxhave 84 and yy have A6, community cards are 4-A-10-8-10 then who is the winner
yy cause he has two-pair (A-A and 10-10)
You didn't include suits, it's possible xx may have been able to beat yy with a flush.
The A-6 wins because only the best 5 cards are used to make a hand, and A-A-10-10-8 is better than 8-4, who has 10-10-8-8-A. The 8-4 hand does not have three pairs, even though three are "visible"
A trickier question might be to ask who wins if one player has A-4, the other has K-Q, and the board is A-K-Q-4-7. When this happens first player's best 5 cards are A-A-4-4-K and the other player's are K-K-Q-Q-A. Even though the second player's two pairs are very strong, the first player wins because his highest pair is higher than the opponent's highest pair.
*I should note that the above examples all assume flushes aren't a factor, which is 5 cards of the same suit. Flushes beat anything except a full house (3 of a kind + a pair), 4 of a kind, or a straight flush (ex: 4-5-6-7-8 all of the same suit - very, very rare!)
@@DAMIENDMILLS 84 cannot have a flush on a 4 A 10 8 10 board.
ACE-KING = Anna Kournikova, looks GREAT but never WINS...
Unsuited cards fail to pair the board 2 out of 3 flops. I'd rather have paired sixes than ace king.
Any hand (and I mean any hand) is playable under the right circumstances. The key is knowing which circumstances.
8,2 is never playable unless you are trying to get a fold. Never are you hoping to see a flop with this hand. Atleast I hope not.
False.
@@420spacecowboy it's playable when you're already blind and just wanna see the flop till the first bet.
the video is about STARTING HANDS ya dork. Of course, you can win with any hand depending on the right situation. But after taking positions into account, one of the biggest mistakes beginners make is playing way too many starting hands.
My best hand was a four of a kind, all sevens
I don't get, how 22 has good chances to continue after the flop?
another 2 on the table.
i agree we have more chance of getting three of a kind like every pair but thats definetly not a powerful hand
+legend “-waitforit-” dary i agree.
Lets say you have 22 and there's 3 9 K on the flop - you have 11 outs - 3x3 2x2 3x9 3xK
Edit: Because having a pair on the board is better odds of you winning than any other non-pair hand.
yes, it has better odd than any non pair but we're saying its not an powerful hand whatsoever
I was expecting the ''you know'' guy
Why is a flush rated higher than a straight? I mean it's way easier to get a flush than it is to get a straight right? Am I missing something?
Eduardo Santiago I've always wondered that
Should of been the other way around. Odds of getting a flush over a straight are ATLEAST triple
Simple, it is easier for your opponent to notice that there is a possibility you have a flush, than it is to notice someone might have a straight
Yes, you are missing something. It's easier to get a straight.
it's much easier to get a straight. look at any un-paired board. it's only POSSIBLE to have a flush if three of the same suit hit the board. almost ALL boards contain a possible straight by the river. it's math. flushes are rare
That being said, only roughly 50% of the boards are unpaired. Still easier to get a straight, but it's not that huge of a difference in probability. It's like 4.5% to 3% in a 7-card combination in favour of a straight.
👍
The best starting hands in texas hold 'em are the ones you feel like you'll get lucky with and have the chips to spare in order to make the call and see the flop.
it doesnt matter if it's 7-2 or 9-3 off suit, if you're feeling lucky and have some chips to spare then by all means put them in and see the flop.

How is Ace + 6 a good starting hand? 2:59
+Jez Stukley Cuz they are suited with a high card, A. then ud have a good chance for the flush and the highest pair available
+Jez Stukley The Ace is a high card which is good. The reason it works with the 6 is because they are the same suite. That is a possibility of a flush. If the flush doesnt turn out, at least you have an Ace as your high card.
+Jez Stukley Ace with, 2,3,4,5 is better than A6 IMO, simply due to the wheel straight possibility.
+Gizziiusa
The chance of you hitting a 5-high straight when you have {A} and one of {2,3,4,5} is approximately (3×2×1)/(13³) = 1/366.
The chance of you hitting a flush when you have {A} and *any* other card of the same suit is approximately (1/4)³ = 1/64.
Thus, that (A,6) suited hand is just under six times more likely to hit a flush than any (A, {2,3,4,5} ) hand is to hit a straight. Way better if you ask me.
+Navjivan Pal i am implying A6 vs Ax (x = 2,3,4,5) are all suited per the video at 2:59. preflop, you get the additional outs of the possibility of a wheel. so again IMO Ax > A6 , all suited.
Always fold pocket aces
what about two jacks
Why are pocket 2’s a better hand than say pocket 5’s?
Rule of thumb is never play 7 2, unless they are off suit then you insta all-in.
