In October, the 12th and final book in the Ranger's Apprentice series was released. THE ROYAL RANGER sees John Flanagan make a spectacular return to the world of Ranger's Apprentice - but what has happened since you last saw Will and his friends might shock you!
Will took an oath when he joined the Ranger Corps. Does it mean nothing to him now?

Mr Flanagan... I just want to say... Your books came into my life at the right time. The ruins of gorlan was a few years old when I started. I had nothing to read in my school library. I just finished Harry Potter. I thought what now? I helped my libraiarian check in the books from the book drop. At the very bottom was the ruins of gorlan. It was In my range so why not? The first page I was skeptical. The first chapter I was interested. Halfway through I was enthralled. I stayed up very late to finish each book. I got to the fifth book and our school didn't have it. They had it it was just checked out.... For a few months... A few near temper tantrums with the bookshelf... I looked at it every day... I finnaly went to the public library they had it. I picked back up on my normal pace up until the royal ranger. It was my worst nightmare.. Both libraries didn't have it.. I had to wait a week for the library to borrow it from another library. The series was flawless until..... Wait what? You killed off Alyss how dare you!! I wanted to cry. I rolled with it...... The ending was good but... Why Alyss? I could definitely see lady Pauline but........ Alyss.... The one girl who I could relate to? Of course, Maddie would have been Halts apprentice then but still..... Alyss? You get a lot of criticism from this so I'm going to lay off.. I just finished the outcast and you have still got it! I hope the next book is as good or better! An ordinary author writes until the story is right. John Flanagan writes until he almost never gets it wrong..

In my opinion, Brotherband I consider to be a complete ripoff of Ranger's Apprentice. Even though it's the same author, and I am biased. But seriously, their social situations are practically the same, and the characters are copies of each other. Hal is basically Will. Stig is Horace. Thorn is Halt. The only differences are their culture, and their strengths. The rest of the brotherband is relatively unique, but I don't feel the same impact as main characters would.
My heart was broken when i read that Alyss died, when i thought of a later book i never thought of her dying :[
I literally stopped at the 11th book for a year, and just a few days ago finally got the 12th book just because Alyss died. She's my favorite character.

John you were so wrong, I would have been happy with you just making Rangers Apprentice books, just 3 more until Maddie is a full fledged Ranger. I mean why did you even bother making the Royal Ranger book and destroying the happily ever after picture I had for Will and Alyss is you were just going to destroy it in a book that besides showing that Horace and Evalyn had a kid and girls can be Rangers, didn't contribute anything to the series. The least you could do if you were going to do that was give us a few more book with Maddie in it, at least make Alyss's death worth it, because to be honest, losing Alyss was not worth The Royal Ranger, not worth it. Ok I'm done ranting.
I couldn't agree more with you. At the end of book 11 i was super happy because Horace and Cassandra got married and will finally got married to Alyss, and then i open book 12 (I read them straight after each other) expecting a happy start and then i notice Alyss died and went straight from super happy person to super angry person with homicidal tendencies. And even though i liked the book a lot i still don't think Alyss's death was worth it. And i really hope more books will follow (like a part where will find evidence that Alyss is still alive somewhere kidnapped (a body was never found)), because i get way to attached to fictional carracters.
I think that you could make a realy nice book with alyss in it, and horace and cassandra still had a child. I would like a last book with alyss in it, leaving the rangers series without alyss still hurts me.

Dear Mr. Flanagan. I'm not a writer, I'm a reader. I LOVE the Ranger's Apprentice series and despite what you might think, none of us would ever get bored with your stories of the rangers. Thank you for 12 books of great entertainment and we will all hope that someday you will change your mind and write us a few more!

I just started the series over I can't handle this right now.
i will try to read all of the books over again in the english language(i´m swedish) and when i´m done with all of them i will look on them with a new and happy view.

The hardest part was probalby that I didn't know that the Royal Ranger was the last book until after I had read it.
yeah. and do you remember when will was looking back to his traning time with Halt while training maddie and grumbling and saying things that Halt said the same while traning will. by then i remembered all the funny grumblings and grunts that halt said and i started crying due to feeling sad-sentimentaly
because i would never experience that feeling of happiness that i felt in the rangers universe again.

mrfogle99 I remember... The jokes are just always there and I also felt real sad both while reading and afterwards.
However a funny part I noticed in the eighth book was when Will thought about getting an apprentice of his own, because he was so sure he would get to train a boy. I think that was some sort of early sign for this last book, since he got Maddie for apprentice. But to be honest with you I would have liked it better if it ended at the eleventh book, with Alyss alive and the "Then they lived happily ever after" feeling.
English is fine but it will improve if you read the series in english :)

and yeah, the lost stories would have been excellent to quit on. Because the lost stories kinda finished everyones lives and no loose ends. but instead he had to make a book atleast 15 years forward and no explanation what has happened or will hapen. That is just not a good ending according to me.

I can’t believe that he’s actually making a 13th book after all this. It really was a good series but I think his mind was running dry by the Royal Ranger and I think Mr.Flanagan misses the Rangers. Something must have clicked him back to Rangers, and how can we blame him?
A hiatus per say since The Royal Ranger was taken, and I’m so excited to continue the journey Maddie will take in The Red Fox Clan. I sincerely hope book 14 is in the works, but I hold no promises

Im 27 now. I just started second book because my health is getting worse every day and cant do any more active things... Mr. Flanagan - you just woke up in me my inner child to the deepest parts possible.
I just want to get a bow, green clothes and go into woods so bad now. And I will do it when I get better. Thank you for this wonderful books.

Hi! I am a huge fan of your series. I have read no better series ever, and I doubt I will. I love the story and characters in your books, and find it extremely sad that you have ended Ranger's Apprentice, and are drawing Brotherband Chronicles to an end.
I loved the last book, The Royal Ranger, but feel as if you left a little bit of a loose end. What happened to Maddie after joining the corps? Did she come to be as good as Will, or even, as good as Halt? What happened to King Duncan? Is Halt's life drawing to an end? I think many people would like to see the answers to these questions.
Also, there are many other characters whose stories are incomplete. I feel Will's is, because it never said what he felt after killing Jory Ruhl. Was he still sad because of Alyss's death?
Anyways, I request something. One last push of the Ranger's Apprentice series. I would like to see another book like the Lost Stories, except on Will's, Horace's, Cassandra's, Halt's, and Maddie's finish or end. I feel frustrated that their stories are incomplete.
I will say again, I love this series, and have never read anything as good as it. Nor will I ever. So do not think I am Criticizing the books or Mr. Flanagan. I just request one last effort toward the Ranger's Apprentice series. Thank you.
(P.S.) I would also love to know when or if the movie will be coming out.

The ending is so open John! When I was reading the book I thought there where some books after this one. Definitely you need to stop once but really with this open ending and huge way to go?
The only thing I can hope of is that Brotherband is getting mixed one time with RA. I would enjoy reading how Hal meets Will :P

Alyss did not die. John Flanagan is lying. What happened is that alyss jumped out a different window after rescuing the girl. Then a healer found alyss hurt from the fall she had taken. The healer took alyss to his house and was healing alyss. After this book Will and Malladie visit a tavern and they see alyss and find out what really happens. They live happily ever after.

If I read it correctly they said that her body was never found. Assuming the fire wasn't hot enough to burn even human bone, that means that Alyss somehow got out. Doesn't explain why she doesn't go back to Will right after though...maybe she got out but was really injured (burns plus jumped out a building), and then goes to what +BlueDragon257 was saying.
i am 15 and already know how it feels to loose something that you hold dear.
and with that knowledge i will never want to love anything again as much as i did with the rangers apprentice.

I'm glad this wasn't the final book as it was sad and there is some potential for us to see the rest Maddie's training.
Although it's probably not gonna happen, I really hope Alyss lives somehow as we never saw the body, my idea would be she was captured by someone and someone finds her in a later book like Maddie and saves her without knowing who she is and Will is happy to see her, then we learn about what happened. This is just wishful thinking though, maybe in the 14th book as I'm guessing she's not saved in red fox clan as i've not heard people shouting online that she's alive, although i've not read it yet. We also didn't see much of their relationship which was a lot of wasted potential (at least kill her after they've been married for at least one whole book)
Why not just write a new series for Maddie I mean that's what I thought the book was going for like how will started as an orphan and wut not and now Maddie starting from a princess to a royal ranger I like the idea anyone else agree

Well they would have to redo a little bit of the Ranger's apprentice to do so with the training. This would be why. Character development for most people are done too.

Over Christmas break, a few years ago, my aunt, who works at a bookshop, sent me the first five Ranger's Apprentice books. I finished the first one before the day was over and the rest before the end of the week. Then, I forced my mom to take me to Barnes and Noble to buy the sixth. I've read all the books now, and I own one through ten and twelve.

I want to say how much your books mean to me my brother suggested this series for me and since then I’ve read every single one. It was kind of sad when alyss died but it makes it more realistic and is very different from other books where the main characters live happily ever after. I think it would be kind of cool if you added more about maddie and how she went through her training with will it would help tie up some loose ends with the royal ranger. Maybe you could make Dimon return and try to steal the throne again? Anyways thank you so much for your books i love them so much and I am SUPER excited for the stern chase in October i cant wait for it. Thank you so much again for all you’ve done your books have impacted so many more young readers (like me) than you probably ever imagined.

In some ways I personally felt the last book was not necessary. I read books to escape reality so when favourite characters are killed off just to form a conclusion I would prefer to leave it open. The main reason I read the last book was I couldn't actually believe what was suggested in the preview would happen. That being said I can understand why you felt the need to draw the series to a close. I just would have preferred it in a different manner.

Writing this really late at night because I just finished reading the final book royal ranger.
Alyss death was so sudden right when her and wills relationship was at a climax and skimmed over pretty fast by dying in a fire.
Hardly even got to hear from halt, Horace the main characters of the series.
Maddie the apprentice wasn't a bad plot but it should of brought the old characters all back together in a final mission not against petty thieves.
Overall the series lacked what all the previous books did, a main threat and adventure for all the main characters one last time.
If you were going to kill Alyss off do it with her dying in wills arms after a major event, as it was obvious Flanagan wanted him to turn out grim like halt.
Eh there are so many more points, the first 11 are perfect this could have been amazing and felt well rushed..
Overall a wonderful series, with the final book leaving me super salty (I feel It could have been done better despite the Alyss death)
If the author ever reads comments (which Is doubtful) I want to say I respect them regardless of my feelings haha

Actually. I like book 12. It had a nostalgic end. The way they skimmed over their relationship, their love, and her death was symbolic, in a way. It showed how much of their lives we don't know; how much we will never know. Same with how much of their future, we will never know. It wasn't a disappointment, it was just different. Our nostalgia for the previous books can blind some people, but I liked it. It was an end, quite simply.

If that is the reason he killed off alyss, it is a bad one. The entire concept of will was that he was a happy and nice person who was friends with everyone and was one of the few people who could get through to halt. To make a character like will grim, is to completely ignore his entire character. Not only that, but killing off alyss leaves a sour taste in your mouth seeing as half the series is just will saving alyss. I was extremely dissapointed with the ending of one of my favorite series ever, I choos to completely ignore the last book in the seriesm, and pretend that abomination never happened.
The 13th book is coming out. My main problem in this whole situation, Will is in his thirties by book 12. He still has so many YEARS ahead of him for fulfilling content.

Also with how Horace and Cassandra lead the kingdom now, we get to see almost a whole breath of fresh air to fill because the kingdom itself is now new and the whole idea of new conflicts and changes in the territory is still fresh in the world of it all. Especially with the Brotherband Chronicles, it shows the change of time and how the future is after the 12th book.
I loved both of your series and to me the last book was a clif hanger i wish you could make a series on will training his apprentice that would be great!!!!

I read part of the series back when I was in middle school. I'm in high school and just finished the whole series. It sucked when Alyss died. I can see why Flanagan chose to end the series, but he could also continue Maddie's story, but I doubt he would. I couldn't come to terms with why he would end it that way, but he's different from other writers and didn't choose to have Will and Alyss live happily and ever after, but added realism to it. I just wanted to thank John Flanagan for the great series he had came up with and I look forward to The BrotherBand Chronicles and the movie. Thank you. And I am looking forward to the shenanigans that Maddie and even Will Treaty himself, get into the future.
John! If you watch this! Make the Rangers Books animated, It would be amazing!!!
Doesn't quite work that way, usually you gotta be approached by a studio willing to animate and since RA is pretty much unheard of in Japan the chances of that are practically nil. Even so, an anime series of RA would be amazing.

! The Company can have full control of the product and animation, putting it in an animated forms makes it easier to make and follow the book to the tee. You would be using the medium to create it visually (which i know you book people hate, because the book form of everything is better) but for all the people that would like to see the with motion with music and life to it, would be awesome, It wouldn't be in Japanese either since its of Western origin. If not Anime use the Western CGI animation such as the up and coming how to train a dragon movie.

Why should a japanese company - who likely hasnt even ever heard of a book series written by an Australian - make said book series into a genre of Animation and story telling that is more suited to school dramas exhibiting girls with large breasts and shy nerdy boys?

What you guys are not understand is that they would use the animation style and the company who own RA would direct the way they want it to follow the books story and character design. Anime is based off Manga - Which is created around Nerd Fantasy of having power and women i wont disagree with it, but there are lot of anime that don't follow this Nerd Line - Ghost in Shell, Akira, Death Note, Darker then Black, Tales of the Abyss, Peace Maker Kurogane these a perfect examples of how story, characters and animation design can work well for books etc. The Books would suit it perfectly, Its easier to create the world in the books through animation rather then live action. You response to this is shockingly idiotic, listing one anime that tried to animate western books and dismissing the idea because of one example.
Look at the anime Created for Marvel - Iron Man, Wolverine, Xmen - It was awesome to watch. Good example of western comics being made into anime. Oh and Mass effect - I enjoyed the Anime for that as well.
Well, after having read this series 4 times (almost 5), I guess I can say that... After reading this series and Brotherband as well, Ranger's Apprentice captures and describes Will so well. Brotherband is good, but the individuality was/is kind of laughing. You can see how Stig's girlfriend's death affected him, etc. but

I feel like the twelfth book of Ranger's Apprentice really didn't bring the characters together.
When you have Will and Maddie against thieves and murderers you know the greatest conflict of the story is Will against himself.
What I would have wanted to see was some sort of civil war after Duncan's death, or an early Temujai return. In the civil war a rogue ranger leads a rebellion against everyone.
In the Temujai's return the Temujai attack in mass force with a full scale invasion. A follower of Arrisaka in Nihon-Ja takes the thrown and forces the current ruler into hiding (forgot his name. Sorry :/) the new ruler contacts the Temujai and they launch an attack. This forces Skandians, Arrida, and Araleun to band together

On the bright side I believe Flanagan said he'd like at least 7-8 Brotherband books, so you can expect that.
I still miss Ranger's Apprentice though. I also thought Alyss's death was unexpected, especially *ok so let's pause a moment. We just found out that they got married, and when Book 12 came out, we expected everything to be ok right? Wrong. Alyss was dead.* with how we expected them to be in a solid relationship.
Alright. End of rant. G'night all who see this. Also, we SHOULD have a movie to look forwards to in the coming years ^_^.

She was a great character and you just destroyed all of the happy moments i had reading this book, and now the ending will ruin the experience of the book because you cant take your mind off of the tragic ending, WHY did you not save alyss and wills marriage till the last bit of the series, and then you could have even opened the series back up again a few generations below Will and Alyss.' I dont know if anyone else feels like I do when the are the main characters for the book you strangely enough feel that you are them and so that made me really love Alyss through out her entire character, it just makes you fell that the story hasn't been resolved and has been left in a really bad un-fixable tragic situation!

I loved that book series and I think I'm gonna read it again I am a 14 year old 9th grade student in PLAP MB CA and I have read all of the books In a quarter of the normal school year and I loved those books and I wish I could find them at the public book store so I don't have to keep renting them from the library

I don't think Alyss died in that fire, their are many possibilities that she could have survived the fire and disappeared in Araluen. I think in future novels, will is going find her. You never know what John Flanagan is planning

sorry, I was only able to do steps 1 and 3. Could be worse though brotherband had been my favourite Series since it started, I eagerly await the day when something will surpass the currently equal footing of brotherband and the inheritance cycle. But I don't think it will ever come :D

if a book was ever deserving of a movie this is it but if they did cone out with one i dont think it could ever live up to the books

Best series: Rangers Apprentice Series, Percy Jackson series 1 & 2. I hope if they make a movie out of The Rangers Apprentice, they don't ruin it like in every other movies based on a book.
This series and the dragon lance saga are my favourites. I loved reading them, i laughed, i cried, a cheered and i mourned. Such incredible books

eh just a theory but y'all know how Ulf is part of the brotherband in the other series? Well I was re-reading the Ruins of Gorlan and I realized that the during choosing day, the name of the horsemaster is also Ulf... idk

And after the emperor of nihon-ja, I want to know how his life was being married to Alyssa before she died. I am on my fourth time through the series and I know every single thing that's gonna happen and I'm heart broken😭😭I like the brotherband books but nothing will ever top the rangers apprentice.☕☕☕

thats true stuff does get stale like when you watch a show with 11 seasons and hundreds of episodes what happens at the beginning means nothing at the end and it really destroys the quality of the story

I started on book two then I read book one. This was way back when there was only two books out at the time and I am trying to keep up to date with all 4 series.

i wish he kept it going to till everyone was old and died, would have been an epic, and then hes gotta release a bound edition "Chronicles Of Araluen" or something with every single godamn book hes written all in one massive book. i wish kept alyss alive as well, or resurrect her in some way

I thought the 11th was the final book I enjoyed that one but the 12th if you go through the series you and finish with that it kinda crushes the series and leaves the readers irritated or maybe conflicted I for one would hope this is not the last book and he plans to pick it back up and give us hope for a continuation of the hardships Will Treaty goes through and possibly a uplifting closure to the series not that this one was necessarily bad just gave me a bitter taste that is all.

You should have ended it on the eleventh book; we get that happily ever after feeling, but now i'm emotionally destroyed.

this book leaves sooooo many open questions, is she really dead, what happens to Maddie, will Maddie marry Tim, will Gilan and Jenny get married, does Duncan die.

The Jackal I am just getting into this series and I am on book 3 The Icebound Lane now so I have a little to go. Anyway I am someone that likes to read spoilers because to me it doesn't matter if I know what is going to happen because I can still enjoy the journey.

I love his work. But it is deeply depressing knowing the series had ended. But I'm on Book 6 :D
