From what I understand in Immortal Songs an artist who was a big thing back in the day is a special guest (the ones sitting on their own with the product placement bottles in the frame) and modern artists cover their songs. Ateez's Black Cat Nero is a cover they first performed on Immortal Songs as well.
once again, your reaction was EVERYTHING!! I am so glad you got to ig "experience" the Immortal Songs 2 because I feel like it isn't talked about NEARLY as much!! Its so clear Jooyeon has SO much fun doing these and its such a great chance to see how vocally talented they all are.

and, the one absolutely shredding the guitar is jun han! he doesn't sing very often, but ig his "voice" is all the guitar solos he gets to do!

Thanks for your reaction! Yesterday (2024.05.08), they had a live performance for “Night of Fireworks” at the radio program (KBS CoolFM) and they danced as per request of one fan. It was fun to watch them.
OK, I have entirely too much info on this show and these performances but I am bored and procrastinating and got a Viki plus subscription solely so I could watch the full eps they appeared on so I’m gonna info dump. Immortal Songs is a casual competition show that’s been running for like 20 years or something close to that, tho I know it’s gone through a couple different iterations. Basically the premise is that each episode features a “legendary” artist or a theme (like King of High Notes or Best OSTs) and various current artists are invited on to perform a cover of one of the legendary artist’s songs or a song that fits the theme. It’s a cool show bc 1) they get artists from all different corners of the entertainment industry, so you can get solo balladeers competing against musical theater actors and idols and bands, and 2) the emphasis is on the vocals, so no lip-syncing and minimal or no backing tracks, all live singing. The downside of the show, at least from my perspective as someone who’s seen a couple dozen episodes, is that they are very biased towards solos and ballads, which just usually don’t hit for me. Also, the structure of the show (2 contestants drawn randomly will perform, live studio votes and the winner sits on a fancy red couch, next performer picked again from a random draw, if they get more votes than the 1st winner then they get to take over the red couch, so on and so forth until a final winner is left w/ the most votes) means that if you go last you have a much better chance of winning since you only have to beat 1 performer. But, it’s also not a super serious show, the ones that lose in the early rounds still get to go chat in the green room and it’s all just for a fun little trophy.
The first performance you watched was XH’s most recent appearance and the ep was featuring Kim Kyungho, who is basically THE rock/metal vocalist of Korea. I’m no music expert, but if I had to pick a western parallel I’d say he’s kind of like if Ozzy Osborn had come to popularity in the 90s and never did drugs lol. He has a super unique tone and style that no one really even attempts to imitate. But despite all his wailing vocals he’s also known as a super soft, gentle person. People close to him affectionately call him unni, aka big sister, bc of his long hair and caring demeanor. XH even asked if they could call him unni and he said yes but he’d have to call them cute little brothers and I think Jooyeon about died of happiness lol. Kyungho is one of Jooyeon’s musical heroes so even though it meant they’d have to fly back from a concert in Manila the night before taping he demanded they do the show for this ep. Didn’t matter if they won or how tired they’d be for their next schedule, as long as he got to meet his hero. The song they covered is called Forbidden Love. I think it might be his most popular song? Don’t quote me on that. But from the ep I know it is a karaoke staple, and the kind of song that if you pick it then you must be a very confident singer bc it’s a really hard song. I realize I’m extremely biased, but I really feel that they had the best performance this ep and I’m still baffled why they didn’t at least win their round. But Kyungho really liked it, so at least there’s that.
After that in your reaction is actually their 1st IS appearance, which they did I believe less than a year after their debut which is very rare for this show from what I can tell. This time the legendary artist was Patti Kim, a fascinating lady who came back to Korea to do this show after having retired from public life 10 years ago. She was super popular in the 60s and 70s, very much the diva of her time. Lots of awards and firsts to her name, like the first Korean artist to be invited to perform in Japan since independence, first to perform at the Sydney opera house, etc. She also had a very public divorce from her first husband but it was entirely amicable and they continued to work together since he was her main songwriter/producer, very unusual for the time. The song they chose to cover is Seoul’s Maternal Love, all about how great the city is and a popular one to play at events bc it’s easy to sing along to and has all that Seoul pride. XH actually picked it bc none of them are from Seoul but Seoul is where they all met and came together as a 2nd family for each other, which is just the sweetest. They didn’t win their round, but I think Patti really liked it and she called them adorable.
The last one you watched was their 2nd appearance for an ep featuring Song Changsik. From what I could gather in the ep, he’s sort of a Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan singer-songwriter type figure in Korean music and the godfather of folk-rock in the 60s-70s. The song they picked was Why Do You Call Me, which iirc he wrote after overhearing a neighbor couple arguing. It was also apparently banned at one point, tho not even Changsik knows exactly why lol. I think this might be my favorite cover arrangement XH did for this show. The original is pretty simple, kind of melancholy, but they turned it into such a cool performance. For this one they actually won this round, which was super exciting bc the guy they beat had been on the red sofa for a few rounds already. But unfortunately they went 2nd to last and the final performer was Lee Mujin, who you might know from his youtube series Mujin Service, and he ended up winning the ep.

Oh, forgot to add that in the last performance you were correct in catching that Ode is missing. Very sadly his grandma passed away soon before the taping so he was taking a brief hiatus for the funeral and to spend some time with his family.

Jooyeon is out of this world, everyone sing so well but Jooyeon is just a level of range of his vocals is beyond everyone in kpop and rock this days tbh!!! Beside he puts the right emotions the song needs like is nothing is beyond amazing too

You might want to watch a show with the band.. there are two beginnings (about the debut, very sweet and atmospheric) and rock the world, I also highly recommend it!!! I was dying of laughter every time!!

Ateez also had a few performances on immortal songs which are more than worth checking out, black cat nero being the most famous. And one of nillili mambo x fantastic baby which i really liked.
Money ball and strawberry cake are probably my favorite XH songs, strawberry cake was on their first album and for a rookie group to hit those notes blew me out of the water, they actually retroactively made an mv for strawberry cake which now has more views than the title track of that album (which imo test me was eh, and not a great show of their talents so thats fair).
Also your top three artists are the exact same as mine, altho sometimes måneskin sneaks in there too.

Most guitar solos are Junhans's, not Gaon's. Gaon is the shorter singer/rapper who is always between Jooyeon and Jungsu.
