The Rise and Fall of FC Kaiserslautern: What Went Wrong?

  • Founded in June 1900, FC Kaiserslautern spent almost half a decade in Germany's footballing wilderness before the arrival of Fritz Walter, his brother Ottmar Walter, and the rest of the Kaiserslautern stars who inspired West Germany to success at the 1954 World Cup.
Kaiserslautern only spent one season outside of the Bundesliga prior to the 2006 World Cup, enjoying a second wave of success by winning two Bundesliga titles in the 1990s.
Now, FC Kaiserslautern are in the third tier of German football / soccer, not far off dropping into the fourth tier, and facing financial ruin. In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at where it all went wrong for the ninth most successful club in German football.

Is it ironic that a World Club brings Kaiserslautern into limelight (the 1954 with the Miracle of Bern) but then another World Club also leads to this club's downfall (by the debts taken for paying the Renovation of Stadium for the 2006... which is named after said Legend who created that Miracle in the first place)?
Thanks for the Fun Fact though. Cheers.

It really is. It is absolutly hurting Fritz Walter would have never fought for this stadium and the world cup 2006 in Kaiserslautern if he knew what it would mean for the club. He always wanted the best for his heart and soul, the 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

That's true but it wasn't just the worldcup that brouth all the financial problems... it all started after they won the german championship in 1998 cause then they still wanted to compeet with bayern in the following years. That was a huge mistake cause they really weren't a top team then and still bought a lot players who weren't in their prime anymore for way too much money! They also had a lot of "dirty" presidents which stole money from the club then...
I'm a Kaiserslautern fan and I'm living in germany so I'm sorry if my english isn't that good :) but I just wanted to bring those facts out too

As a Kaiserslautern fan, this Video hits pretty close to home. I am aware of our History, but everytime you see what happend, its just a rolercoster of emotions. Anyway thanks for the good video about my beloved club. Cheers and greatings from Kaiserslautern
Edit: Maby you should do a follow up Video, cause in past 2 years, the club turned things around. After coming desperatly close to Relegation out of professionell Football in 20/21, to beeing Promoted in the most nervewrecking fashion in a season were nobody even thought about Promotion in 21/22, playing one hell of a season in the 2. Bundesliga, beeing the best freshly Promoted site in almost a decade.
Things changed alot in the past two years and only for the better.
Even our Stadium is packed again on game day, with around 40k visitors at each home game. (Mind you this is more than 8 Bundesliga clubs)

The club has such a huge meaning to Germany. With the 1954 world cup title, they gave a lot of pride to all west germans (and even east germans, too). And all five players of the club being in Switzerland that time played in the final. Fritz Walter is seen as a man who built up the nation morally as the moral was devasted after the war.

As u said, 19k fans per game watch us, and when uts a big game, its almost full every time. But the stadium, despite being beautiful, fucked us heavily. "...almost comparable to the Premier League title won by Leicester..." - This is a prime example of the Premier League bias you see so often in football videos these days. Both from an emotional standpoint and as footballing performance, Kaiserslautern's achievement ranks significantly higher than Leicester's. I don't want to take anything away from the Foxes' unbelievable title run. The competition in today's Premier League is incredibly strong and there is almost no room to break the top club's reign. However, Leicester did spend freaking 40.000.000€ that summer and another 23.000.000€ the year before that. Not much in comparison to Chelsea, ManCity and so on. But a ton in general to work with and sign players like Kante. So obviously they were able to snatch up great talent. To put things into perspective, Leicester spent more that year than Bayern Munich has 16 times out of the last 20 years! With this sort of investment power you are obviously bound to generate some success. Kaiserslautern on the other hand won the title as a newly promoted side. To get a feel for that kind of scope you would need to imagine Norwich winning the title last season. Not everything great only happens in freaking England! Aside from Kaiserslautern 1998, you might want to check the Bundesliga relegation battle of 1999, or Schalke's 4-minute title of 2001.

In 14/15 we were one win away from confirming promotion with 4 games to go against fairly easy opposition. we lost 2 and drew 2 dropping into 4th place. afterwards the best players, like leipzigs orban, leverkusens demirbay and napolis younes left and we fell into midtable and then relegation. it's pretty tough to think back to how close we got to being back in the bundesliga and likely fixing our financial issues, while we now sit in lower midtable in the 3 bundesliga.

I'm not sure if you have done this (and I can't remember it over the past couple of years), but I would really love to see a video on the history of Athletic Club's Basque only policy. It is incredibly rare in the modern game and also has great political significance due to the massive pressure on the club under the Franco regime. Love your videos as always Alfie and thanks for standing up for the minorities in this clickbait world by giving us some real, academic-styled content!

There was a cycling team, Euskatel-Euskadi, that had the same policy. They had a very strong showing in the early 2000's, winning Tour stages and Vuelta's. They usually had a problem with guys leaving for bigger teams, and they ended up folding in 2013, as the government pulled funding (mostly due to the rampant use of drugs in the sport) even though cycling is very popular in the region.

When I lived in the American military community in Wiesbaden and Mainz-Kastel, Kaiserslautern was simply known as "K-Town". Always struck me as strange that we couldn't take the time to pronounce our host country's cities, but words like "Tallahassee" and "Oklahoma" were pronounced fully like it wasn't shit.

@@hchastain16 That's super interesting. Are you in the military community out there, or are you a civilian? We moved back to the US in 2007, so I'd assume things have changed. Now that I think of it, though, the Americans I knew that had been stationed there used the proper name. Maybe it's something to do with seeing the name on Autobahn signs and stuff.

Why would 1. FC Kaiserslautern have to pay themselves for the stadium renovation when the DFB or whoever was in charge chose it as one of the host stadiums for the 2006 WC? Especially since they don't even own the stadium! That should have been paid by the DFB and the state/city, and MAYBE a bit by the club if they agreed to it. Absolutely insane.

I lived in German in 1991, just outside of K-Town. The area then, as alluded to, has the largest concentration of Americans outside of America. It feels like America more than Germany. Everyone seemed to speak English (it made it really hard to try and speak German, because it was just easier to do it in English) There are English TV channels, radio stations, fast food joints. I mean, it made it easy to live there for sure. That year, FCK was the Bundesliga. I always wondered what the deal was with them, they were so fanatically supported by all the Germans I knew.
(I was not in the Military, I was working for a cycling company and was racing bikes as an amateur.)

Small technical annotation: during their first stint at the second tier, they weren't 10 points ahead of Werder Bremen, as stated in the video, but of VfL Wolfsburg. Werder Bremen was (as of now, if the Corona season would have continued it may change) only once in the second tier in 1980. VfL Wolfsburg has been promoted the same year as Kaiserslautern bounced back and stayed in the top flight ever since.

The biggest problem after being the Champion in 1998 was the transfer-policy. We just bought expensive players, gave them a lot of money but the didnt perform like they should. Those transfers just erase the money and were deadly too. But the stadium really killed us after the World Cup.
And to be honest our team this season isnt that bad but they just do not perform the way they could. We won 5 games in a row but in the last 5 games we didnt win any game. And with our goalkeeper going to Leverkusen and our top scorer most likely to leave too next season could be really hard.
But I love it that finally someone outside of germany makes a video about our lovely club 😁😁
