- I was contacted by Hongdian and sent this new model Hongdian 1861 Black Forest Solid Brass fountain pen for review. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

I recently inked up this pen after not using it for several months. I had forgotten how smooth this writes. It may be the smoothest pen that I own.
My girlfriend has just given me one of these for Christmas. I love it and her muchly. ♥️
Awesome color
Thanks Prof for another excellent review. I've got this one on the way (in M too!) and I've got the set of 3 Hongdian nib assemblies in black EF, F, & Bent so...
I've got choices! Plus, brass is antimicrobial too! Anxiously awaiting tomorrow's review...
I love brass pens...the patina on my kaweco brass sport is beautiful! Also.. thank you so much about the tip about using a jewelers cloth.. thats exactly what I needed
Nice pen. Good review as always. 👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thank you so much, Jas!
Thanks for mentioning whether or not the cap spins. My Lamy Aion went into a drawer for exactly that reason.
Polish my big knob? I want one one! Actually, the all brass construction is very appealing. Thanks for the review, Doug. “I like it a lot!”
My pleasure!
In Colorado USA, the two Chinese pens I received this year were delivered by the US Postal Service, in what seems like a timely manner.
I recently received a Hongdian 1861 in stainless steel. I have four of the other "Black Forest" series pens and I've like the EF nib in every one of them, so when these new finishes came out (carbon fiber, brass and stainless steel), I added one more to my collection!
I haven't seen the carbon fibre yet. Must be light!
You were mentioned on Pens and Tea on her live... you are a topic of conversation.. ; )
Cool!
I love my nibs smooth, and the #5 ones on my HD 6013 and 5010 are really satisfying to write with. This appears no different.
Been using my Birch Forest a lot lately. The EF nib with Noodler's Southwest Sunset has been a great combo for underlining and annotating school notes. I agree that the no. 5 nib feels great, although I may generally prefer 5 over 6 anyway.
Of the Chinese pen brands, Hongdian seems like one of the better ones. Maybe similar quality to Majohn, but without the shameless copying of designs. I've seen a new Hongdian N8s floating around lately that I think I'll pick up. They look just like the N7, but with different colors. I really like the one with marbled red acrylic and maple leaves engraved on the cap.
I tried the toothpaste polish method on my brass Retro 51 Tornado and it worked nicely. May be less abrasive than steel wool.
I have a red N8 on the way.
What do you think about hongdian 1841? Just ordered one and I think it's a bad choice...
There is a lot of brass here for very little money. I agree completely with your comments about Hongdian and how they stand alongside other Chinese fountain pen makers. My only concern in this review was the medium nib was too fine for my taste. It didn't really write like a medium nib, in my opinion. For that reason I am a little hesitant about buying one. I might just settle for a large slice of Black Forest Gateau instead.
A rule of thumb is, most Eastern nibs are one size finer than their western counterparts.
I enjoyed your review of this 1861 Black Florest pen. Along with a cup of coffee and a slice of my homemade bundt cake, your review makes an enjoyable few minutes as always on Saturday morning Eastern time, USA. I look forward to it every week. I won't buy anything from Hongdian for poiitical reasons, i.e. they touted the Communist revolution with a pen you reviewed a while ago. Still, your review is great fun as always. Thanks!
Thanks!
Thanks Doug it’s a lovely pen. I’ve avoided brass pens since one of my earliest Jinhao Dragon and pearl pens which looks lovely on display on my wall but is impossible to do much more than a signature. Since that early pandemic pen purchase, I have acquired more, and now know what I like. This pen looks well engineered and very usable. Question though, why do you and others demonstrate reverse writing? Is it something pen folks do or does it demonstrate some desirable feature like ink flow. The geek in me is asking. Thanks again, enjoy your weekend.
Mainly cause some people are sketching with fountain pens, so they would like to know if reverse writing is possible for thinner lines
An excellent review. I’ve always used a product called Brasso to clean up that patina, just don’t like the feeling of steel wool. Yes it’s good to see medium nibs on Chinese fountain pens but I always find it hard to go passed a fude nib if offered.
Brasso works. Very caustic though.
@@InkquiringMinds it’s just something I used a lot in my army days for polishing belt buckles and clips. I found it worked well on brass pens like the Kaweco Pura .
I have never liked metal pens since I could never get a satisfactory grip on them. However, I really like the engineering on this brass Hongdian. Since you noticed that the grip section wasn’t too slippery, I might be tempted. 👍👍👍😎🎃👻💀!
Fair enough!
Another good review, Doug. Generally I not a fan of slim pens, though I do have a couple iny collection. Also, they are rarely inked. My grip prefers larger pens to use, anymore. But this ses like a well made pen and worthy of consideration.
As for metal pens, I have three - a Parker 180, a Conklin Duragraph Titanium and the ēnsso Piuma Titanium. The 180 is also slim and sits unused as it is also slim. It is not good for extended writing sessions, anymore. Pity.
The older we get, the fatter we get... I mean the fatter our pens get!
@@InkquiringMinds well for me it is true on both cases.
Thanks Doug! Looks like a nice, affordable metal pen. Is it roughly the same weight as a Lamy Studio, or heavier?
It is 2 grams heavier than the Lamy Studio Palladium.
Nice Doug. A very attractive pen. Excellent that they offer medium nibs and that the converter is of higher quality. Hongdian is getting the details correct on their newer models, a real encouraging sign of a company striving to improve and not real on their laurels. I would be tempted if this was in their firthier second version of the black forest pen, which came out this past summer.
The Black Forest is a very popular model for Hongdian. It is no surprise they are making a few iterations.
Nice review Doug, or is your name Duck as shown in the subtitels? :-)
Gotta love auto-translate!
I had closed captions on - and I even heard "Duck" - Wondered if the old Prof was into cosplay?

hello there welcome to my channel my name is Duck and I'm back with another fountain pen review"
Well you'll have to forgive me as I've been dealing with one of those head colds that just won't go away! LOL
@@InkquiringMinds I kid ;)
I've heard White Vinegar removes the patina. IDKFS.
I got mine two days ago. It writes like a dream, smooth with zero feedback but my cap spins on top, and posted. I wish mine was as tight of a friction fit as yours. Is this just manufacturing variance you think?
I expect so!
Not too tempted by this one, but have you seen the Carbon-Fibre version of the 1861? THAT i'm really interested in...
I haven't seen that one yet.
What does the date 1861 represent?
Just a model number.
Hey Doug, does your pen have patina now?
I haven’t used it enough!
😀
Interesting that they name this model the same as their black steel version. Same basic design but the earlier version was beautifully knurled. Could lead to confusion.
They seem to have a lot of variation in the "Black Forest" line.
@@InkquiringMinds about eight colours!
Got this pen in extra fine. I like the overall construction but I'm a little disappointed the pen got a cover that keeps the brass from getting patina. Well, when I saw the Amazon description it said raw brass but oh well. The EF is barely scratchy and dry and It have been drying out when keeping cap for a couple of days without using, and although I tried the Doug's seven strokes trick it apparently doesn't work to well. Overall I think is not a bad pen, but maybe I should have tried with the F or M.
Thank you for the video Doug
The trick works if there is a little give in the nib. Not when it is as stiff as the stick up Karen’s ass. Then you have to use a shim.
@@InkquiringMinds 😂
Black Forest? Only the feed is black 😂😂😂😂
Some Black Forest pens are green!
@@InkquiringMinds , Doug, sorry, but those were called green forest, and there was another color, not quite sure if it was blue, anyway l ordered a Black Forest by mistake and turned out a very good one. Thanks for all your great reviews, you’re great.
@ Well that just makes total sense doesn't it? :)
@@InkquiringMinds totally.
I couldn't find the 1861 on UK Amazon, but I was able to buy a Hongdian raw brass fountain pen and I'm hoping it's as nice as the one you reviewed. I have a pencil case with brass pens and pencils only so it will be a nice addition to that collection. The brass Liliput is too small for long writing sessions. Thanks for your review Doug.
Very nice!
