I worked at Pilgrim (1976-2017)for 41 years it was one of the biggest hospitals in the world , I have the Guinness book (1989) . It is still opened. I worked in IT (Bldg.20) I could write a book about my experiences here. I loved working with the elderly Geriatric Residents, what a experience I had at this facility.

That was totally cool, thanks for this video tour of Pilgrim! Growing up back there, I never actually heard of that place, but that would be quite the place to visit on Halloween! It looks super spooky. The psychiatric hospital that I was familiar with in NY, was Creedmoor in Queens Village. As a teenager growing up in Queens after church one day, I was asked to drive this girl back home. Well, her "home" was unfortunately Creedmoor. Wow, that sure was uncomfortable. Plus, my dad had an office in Queens Village, so whenever I drove him there we always passed Creedmoor from Whitestone along the Belt Pkwy. But, I think it's totally abandoned now. Not sure if it's been repurposed for anything else.
Always trying to give you good ideas for another video Mooney, so no surprise I have one for you! It's called the "Gold Coast" on Long Island's North Shore. This is where the well known novel "The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald was fictionally played out. And another lesser known novel called "The Gold Coast" by Nelson DeMille occurred. Just some ideas if you're so inclined for additional research and a driving tour. Thanks again man, always look forward to your videos!

@@MOONEYDashCam i once saw a doc. About lobotomy. There was a doctor in the 50swho would use a hammer and a wood punch. Place it under the eyes and into the upper eyes orbit bone of the patient ,🧔 tap it once. He would do this in both orbits, and this actually work most of the time. Until medical tranquilizers was discovered which in both cases would likely to leave the patient dorsal and quiet.

I worked at pilgrim state, those medical records building are full of medical files from who knows when. The state is not allowed to ever throw them away or transfer them onto hard drives. It’s wild how some of them we’re from the 1930s.

@@michaelciccone2194 i highly doubt it, hipaa laws. But the reason they have to keep them is because mental Illness is hereditary. So every so often a person that was trying to plead criminallly insane who’s grandparents or great grandparent were in a nys mental facility forever ago would request the patient files of their ancestors to try and beat a case.

I lived there for 27 years of my life. I played soccer there for most of it. I always saw the front part of it from the fields, and some back way where we saw a building or two. I wish I was back there to look around. I can't believe I never went back there. I had no idea how big it was and what it looked like. Amazing.

Great video, Mooney! I absolutely LOVE your style; the nuances are just so great. The images were so stark, right? Gray sky, no leaves on the trees, a barren landscape. It completely underscored that creepy, eerie vibe. (Basically, that $h*t looks haunted, lol!!) If you'd gone on a sunny, spring day, it wouldn't have looked nearly as foreboding. Excellent job! The Kennedy family had JFK's sister lobotomized. Doctors told them it would help her mood swings and sometimes violent outbursts. Well, it didn't. It did leave her incapacitated and unable to speak coherently. The Kennedy's basically cut ties with her, stuck her in a "home" in Wisconsin until her death. Her mom didn't visit her for over 20 years and her dad never did. They wanted to keep her out of sight as JFK and RFK launched their political careers.

There’s a lot less buildings now since the past few years they’ve been tearing down a lot of them. Used to go inside these abandoned buildings a lot back in HS about 10/12 years ago bc a lot of people have said they were haunted. Did see & hear some weird things, pretty freaky at night time & one building has an amazing view when getting to the top of it especially at night 15:00 in video the building straight ahead

  • @sarge6870

Dude, back in the early/mid 80's, the complex was undergoing rehab of the buildings and I was an overnight guard there. Our security trailer was down that road on the right at 9:12 . That is where the construction workers working on the building would enter. We had K9's we would have to patrol with. The main bldg. at 10:45 was even then abandoned. I forget what it was called but we had these clocks we had to carry around on patrol and in certain parts of the main building were keys we would put in the clock to tag we were there. The main building back then had old jail cell areas (there were just trenches in the cement where the cells were). There were LONG tunnels that connected the bldgs. And yes, that place was haunted (personal experience)! Freggin' place was creepy AF!!

I grew up in Brentwood and around fifty five years ago me and three of my brothers tried to catch one of the smaller pigs that they kept in a series of large pens there and they broke out of the pen. As kids we used to roam around the grounds , There is a large patient cemetery there with nothing but small numbered markers laid flat on the ground.

Very cool vid Brandon. I never drove in there too. I had no idea that any building was still in use! I heard the security is really intense in there at night to stop once rampant urban exploring. It's funny with Brentwood. In LA it conjures-up movie stars and mansions. In Long Island what it conjures up is not exactly quite the same to the least. Lobotomies, shock treatments, and ice baths were found to be nothing more than tortures. So many people that had things like autism, where thrown in these places. It's really sad.

I grew up in Suffolk county in the 1950's through 1973 and there was no such thing as litter or graffiti. Long Island is running down hill. You could have taken the main highway that runs in front of Pilgrim State to give people the real sense of dark gothic architecture. Even in the 60's, Pilgrim State was creepy.

If king's park has a nice psychiatric centre you should do a video over there the Really crazy very popular for urban explorers

In 1972, Geraldo Rivera did an investigative report with hidden cameras at the Willowbrook State School on Staten Island, NY.
From Wiki: Willowbrook State School was a state-supported institution for children with intellectual disabilities in the Willowbrook neighborhood of Staten Island in New York City, which operated from 1947 until 1987. The school was designed for 4,000, but by 1965 it had a population of 6,000.

State mental hospitals are in the country -in every state. NOT for the patients health --but to get the schizophrenic patients out of the cities, For example near LA we had Camarillo[ and Norwalk hospitals. Now as most psych hospitals close--the crazies are homeless and in county jails. Pretty sad.

I've lived in Brentwood most of my life but have no clue as to most of the areas you drove through. I'm not sure how the heck you got to Pilgrim, but the entrance I would have been familiar with, is where you now enter Suffolk Community college. The entrance on Wicks Road, by the LIE and Motor parkway. If you go past, it in the other direction after you pass Brentwood North middle school, it becomes Fifth avenue a little further down. I grew up in north Brentwood, So Washington Avenue becomes Brentwood Road if you head towards Bayshore. If you head the other way Wahington Avenue ends at Motor Parkway in Hauppauge. I now live in northeast Brentwood off Caleb's path. My side of the street is Brentwood. the other side of the street is Central Islip. If O drive a few blocks to the end of the street, it's Motor parkway Hauppauge.

I would never drive in there or Kings but I can tell you go to the Bay shore Marina and go drive around bright waters to see some beautiful homes, but as one writer said be careful of kings and pilgram shady stuff goes down.

Those abandoned buildings in the back is the morgue. There are a few videos around with people going in them. I myself went into the morgue, but not all the way in. Those cars are coming from Broadridge (that big trucking place). It's not a trucking place. It's a business with many buildings over there and they do printing and handle proxy voting for companies on the stock exchange. I worked there for years. You can actually get out that way, it's shorter. Anyway, they'll let you drive around Pilgrim State property, but if you go into an abandoned building, you'll be immediately arrested for trespassing. Some of those dirt roads have smaller buildings too. You should make another trip there and do more research on the horrible things that went on there.

The property is owned by a big real estate developer (wolkoff) for many years. They have been fighting with the town to develop a big residential area for over 20 years. It would be basically it’s own town if approved. I did work for them in the past for many years. It’s all private property and they pay for security. You are lucky security didn’t catch you because they have previously had trespassers arrested. They have had people going on the property in the past and vandalized.

The problem may be all unmarked graves. No one wants to live or work in a building on top of dead bodies. There are small flat concrete grave markers with no name, just a number all over. No records of who they are.

Pilgrim State is creepy. We used to go drive there at night. Are you old enough to remember Edgewood? It was on Commack Road. Was in Deer Park. That's where I grew up. Edgewood was so scarey. Google that building. They knocked it down. It was part of Pilgrim State. But not on the property. It was gothic looking. I didn't live by it my mother wouldn't live by it. But you could see it for miles.
Not for Nothing..your probably in the safest part of Brentwood there is these days. The people are locked up.

I grew up in Long Island. Your background history commentary was fascinating but too many interruptions of you talking to yourself. When you go back to your notes you sound a bit distracted. (For example, the abandoned tuberculosis building was called Edgewood, but the second time you mentioned it you called it Edgewater.) It's very difficult to do live detailed narration. Even with a script I couldn't do it. (I live in Hollywood and worked in recording studios) A voiceover would've been a better choice. Having said that, I really enjoyed the video. Creepy and entertaining!
