Dennis and Vanessa's coupledom is going backwards. They were already divorced in "The Trial", but still married later in Series 1 in "90 Degrees" (although she leaves him for ......... (SPOILERS)). And than at the end of Series 2 they get engaged
Vanessa honestly has to be the funniest woman in comedy… like the faces she makes and the weird movements and how she sounds like she’s gonna cry or scream all the time is hilarious.
Jonathan Sayer (who plays Dennis and cowrites all of Mischief’s material) has said he loves those kinds of jokes. The fact that they work so well with Dennis’ character is a nice bonus.
I love how these two end up creating even more chaos for the already chaotic plays. Poor Dennis can't ever remember his lines, and Vanessa can't improvise her way around Dennis's mistakes.
a year later, but in one of the watch along videos, Jonathan actually says that Bryony is always on top of her lines, while he is not... so they both play the characters at an outstanding pace. =)
For me the best moment with dennis is the Bear / Beet moment from 90 degrees... First time I watched it I cried laughing.. Ingeniously written and perfectly executed.
You could play a drinking game with Dennis' scenes. In Summer Once Again, chug every time he says "hard", and in The Lodge every time he says "Get Out!"
Out of all them, It seems that Vanessa can handle Dennis's craziness the most, and Dennis really does try his best for Vanessa. If you think about it, it's kind of nice that they try for each other and shows that they're perfect for one another. Maybe we can get a play with just these two fun characters together, Like Family Guy's Brian and Stewie.
Well Vanessa can't think on her feet so while the others can work around Dennis' incompetence by improvising she has no choice but to try and finish the scene because the script is the only thing in her head at that moment.
these guys, their writers, the director, the crew are all amazing. the cues the backstage people have to do are as “hard” as anything this group does!! Thank you so very much for this glimpse. i’d never get to see these guys ever!! :) 🎭🌹🌱
I showed 13:18 - 14:59 to a friend of mine because we were in a play together in our senior year in high school and the clip reminded me of how she was just as frustrated as Vanessa because there was a guy the play that was driving her nuts. Just like Vanessa, my friend tried to hide her frustration, but you could see by the look on her face that she was losing it. When I showed my friend this clip, she said how she was getting frustrated by watching it. It basically made her relieve the moment when the two were on stage. Robert saying "I don't even want to be in this scene" was basically how I felt in the background of our play when I was watching the ridiculousness happen between my friend and the one guy.
Imagine if they do a 3rd season and they wound up actually getting married off screen? One episode Dennis could get mad that his wife is playing a role that requires her to kiss another guy. The story within the story.
"Why are you so confused" ( 14:51 ) and "Get Malcolm, Get Malcolm! Get Malcolm!" (15:47) are the peaks of frustration! Amazing delivery by Vanessa. Cracks me up all the time 😂
That line "I put my sausage up it's-------" then he was cutoff, that was fantastic, caught me so off guard even though he was already singing about that sort of thing haha. I couldn't physically stop laughing for nearly 10 minutes......it actually got to a point where I couldn't breath properly and wanted to drink water, but couldn't haha. I finally calmed down, then what did I do? Of course I had to watch it again.
also that and the way they don't memorize their lines that are 'on paper' for the shows lmao. they would cut down like 15% on mistakes if they didn't actually read everything in front of them 😂
In The Cornley Drama Festival Part 1 was Vanessa really serious about accepting Dennis's proposal to marry him even though they were supposed to be acting during performance because he though they were planning to get married soon😄😆😂.
No, she was just so focused on her attempt at improvising that she seemed oblivious to the fact that he was taking it seriously. That's how I see it anyway, the marriage proposal and Dennis' replies were the closest Vanessa ever came to a successfully improvised scene where she doesn't say the word "Lusty" so she was likely 100% "in fiction", as she herself would say, and completely oblivious to the fact Dennis wasn't improvising.
Dennis didn't propose to her - it was the other way round. I think she realised pretty quickly that Dennis hadn't "joined her in fiction", but couldn't stop him before he'd told his mother and booked the venue (on her credit card!)
8:39 I think that episode would have been funnier if by the time Dennis had to eat the rubber galoshes his moustache would have been covered in goulash from the four (or was it 6?) bowls he had just been forced to eat. Let alone bits of that cake.
I will never get over the fact that Vanessa and Dennis very well could have actually gotten married due to Vanessa’s social anxiety just making her role with it instead.
That is either episode 4 or 5 of series 2 of The Goes Wrong Show. The episodes are called Cornley Drama Festival part 1 and part 2 (or something like that) and rather than featuring plays those episodes feature the drama society members performing their own minor plays and drama workshops - When it's Vanessa's turn she holds an improv workshop where everyone is wearing a brightly coloured shirt like on a kid's TV show.
I hope there's another season or special to flesh it out, but if not my head cannon is that Vanessa does marry Dennis only because she can't think of a way to let him down.
