Seasons In the Abyss is my favorite Slayer album. This is the opening track. Dave Lombardo is probably the baddest ass drummer of the thrash metal era.
Slayer has a few punk-ish vibes that Metallica doesn't. And a lot of Slayer is about sounding chaotic and evil in a way that Metallica typically doesn't try to. But yeah, definitely both in the thrash genre. They kind of represent different branches of the genre. With Slayer being the more speedy and brutal style, and Metallica being the more melodic finesse with slight prog elements.
@@nomadmusicbk2366 agreed. Lombardo is one of the best and most influential metal drummers ever in my opinion. RIP to Jeff hanneman Wish Lombardo was still in the band. And they play even faster live and sound terrific. When Metallica tries to play fast live they sound like total slop.
@@datura2719 I don't know, I've seen Metallica live several times all the way back to the 90s and every time they would try to play fast it was terrible sounding. Seen Slayer many many more times all the way back to the'80s up until their final show at the Forum. They definitely had some nights where looked like they didn't care but overall their performances were better
This whole album, Seasons In The Abyss, hits hard. Skeletons Of Society, Expendable Youth, Dead Skin Mask, Spirit In Black, Born Of Fire, there are no bad tracks.
My band actually opened for Slayer here in Tucson their first time here which was on the South of Heaven tour circa 1989. The pit was amazing and personally was my biggest audience. The only one better woulda been when we opened for Pantera on the Vulgar Display of Power tour. Beautiful.
Thomas Bianchino that is fucking awesome to be able to say those two things. Well done! Went to UofA, by the way. So few people at that school had a clue about good music, but as soon as I left the campus and got into the city scene, I found that Tucson has a really great music scene. Played drums my last three years down there in the early 2000’s. Good times. Anyway, you’re a lucky man.

I love the fact you have no problem saying what most wouldn't dare say in the reaction community. Slayer is the band that never changed. They are held in high regard because of that. Do Slayer - Payback. Its from 2001 but it has that anger that you will love.
I've seen Slayer live 12 times. I think anyone who likes them needs to see them live at least once. They kick ass live and the energy in their performance is incredible.
Just Subscribed to you as I have yet to be exposed to your site with my 57 year old ass. Slayer was Heavy but often misunderstood. On this song, they take a sarcastic approach of War in General!! Sometimes people need to learn to read between the lines!! Great Song and glad you covered it!!
First concert. I was 14. The tour for the album this song is from. Slayer shows are an assault and deep dive into the darkness and evils of mankind. It’s kind of the musical equivalent of a horror movie. I was fortunate to see the original lineup with Dave on drums and Jeff (rip) on guitar.
You get it, bro. You get it. The only band I’ve seen more than slayer is Pantera. Every show was amazing. You would get nervous, you would get butterflies in your stomach before their show started. It was like getting in a fight. You knew you’re going to get hurt, and you’re gonna have fun doing it if you got in the mosh pit. I left the shows bloody then bruised a couple of times. Everyone was cool though, and everyone would always help you up. One of my favorite shows was seeing them with Pantera. They always had really good intros too. One show, they had a big screen with a beating heart, like from a medical video. And slowly the heart stopped beating. When the heart stopped beating they came on super aggressive, I don’t remember the song though. I don’t remember anybody arguing about Metallica and Slayer. Metallica did a different thing, and slayer stayed metal. Slayer was always more aggressive tho.
I was there when this was filmed at the end of a Clash Of The Titans concert with Testament, Suicidal Tendancies, Megadeth & SLAYER! This was the second time they played the song that night especially to film the video.
I recollect I first saw them play here in 1984.... they did play together in 2010 at Sonisphere along with Megadeth and Anthrax I was there for that one and it was amazing! There was always a fan feud about who was best, but they were always on good terms with each other (kind of similar to the Slipknot/Mushroomhead thing) Need to react to Disciple.... they opened with that in May when I saw them.
Metal bands in the early 90s never really beefed. Everyone just did their thing and it was cool. Except Guns N Roses. They had beef with some bands like Nirvana and Metallica. No one ever said shit about Slayer. They've always been well regarded in metal.
I saw slayer live during this “Seasons n the Abyss” tour. I was in the pit and it was brutal and amazing. Sepultura & Testament opened. Incredible show!
We saw them last year and will be seeing them again in November (3rd row). They're pretty legendary. Might be fun for you to go back and watch some of the interviews with Tom Araya. Really cool guy. As a drummer, I spent incredible amounts of time trying to play like Dave Lombardo :)
The first time I saw Slayer was at MSG in NYC. They were awesome, and the crowd got out of hand, and unfortunately the Slayer set was cut short. I've never seen a band pulled off the stage in the middle of a set ... and they were never allowed to play at MSG again. I will never forget that concert.
This as well as others was blasting out of the bedroom back in the day when they came...lot of crazy things went on in that bedroom too. We got our prime out when these bands were at their peak back then, their still good but they where real good for their time in the 80’s. Like everything else it’s memories now. But they belong to us and for our time as 80’s kids
You cracked me up when you said you felt like this song was preparing you for battle! Seen slayer 11 times ,its wild lol...but the singer will literally stop the show if he sees any bullshit going on. The light show AAAAMAZING! EVERY SHOW IS AWSOME NEVER LACKING!!!!...GOOD JOB MY BROTHER ,GOOD LUCK WITH THE CHANNEL!
You gotta go see Slayer in concert. I saw them in the late 90's and it was a awesome concert. I was worried when they unfortunately lost Jeff Hanneman, but they are still going hard. As for Metallica, I stopped listening to them when I first heard the Load album. Can't wait to see Slayer in Moline, IL November 14th. 🤘🤘
Yeah the Metallica self titled album wasn't heavy at all. Personally it wasn't for me, however lots of people liked it. But if I'm gonna listen to Metallica it's definitely the Master of Puppets album.
Seem you liked Slaaaayer! great video when Kerry King had hair and before Tom, the vocalist injured his neck because too much headbanging (he can't do anymore) pity you didn't go to one of their shows, incomparable experience with the energy of the songs multiplied many times! History says that Kerry played for a short time with Megadeth, the band of Dave Mustaine, formed after he was expelled from Metallica! a close and often conflicting relationship between their huge egos. These personal rivalries between the leaders, gave us three magnificent bands, for the benefit of thrash metal fans. Each one in its own and different style. But louders, fasters...Slaaaaayer rules! Jeff Hanneman, rest in power.
It's a trilogy of sorts, Chemical Warfare, Ghosts of War and War Ensemble. I lost count how many times I've seen them live lol, first show was Reign in Blood tour 1986, and though they are known for some of the most vicious pits in metal, they're shows are also fun AF because their fans are freaking insane, most devoted fans in all of metal methinks. The Final Campaign is about to embark so if you can get the chance dont miss out, granted some fans think they're not as good since the passing of Hanneman and though Dave Lombardo is no longer drumming with them, (He's going to be touring with Misfits for their reunion tour) Paul Bostaph is obviously a superb drummer as well. Only thing to sort of equal a Slayer show is invite 100 of your wildest friends (and whomever is wearing a Slayer shirt in public lol) to your house then play a dvd at 100db + and beat the holy hell out of each other for an hour and a half haha!
During Desert Storm, fighter pilots would listen to this song to get pumped up. I remember reading that in a magazine article. But I don't remember which magazine it was in.
I saw SLAYER for the first time in May of last year, and I have to say it was the greatest concert of my life. Shame that it was also the last time. Check out their song Hallowed Point.

So far you're hitting a lot of my old favorites. This is the first Slayer song I learned on piano. Learned it on bass, my best instrument, but never mastered it. (No, I'm not that good). Keep it up. Lombardo is one of my favorite drummers. Grip Inc., the shit he's done with Mike Patton of Faith No More over the years. So versatile, fast (of course) and his inventive fills are astounding. Tom Araya isn't a very talkative frontman live. He's straight to the point, no BS. Their shows are insane... Moshing is for the young guys, though. I'm mid 40s now, so it's not for me anymore. Peace!!!
I remember seeing Kerry on the clash of the titans tour and noticing how he was still holding onto what little long hair he had left. But with every head bang, you noticed that there was a huge bald spot. Saw an interview with him and Tom a few months later and he had a shaved head.
Word has it that during operation desert storm Slayer was being played on loudspeakers across the desert in the direction of Iraqi forces. Get ready for battle boys!
Great reaction from my favorite band ever. The drummer Dave Lombardo is definitely in my opinion one of the best and most influential metal drummers ever. And I have been to hundreds of concerts from so many different bands and genres of music. There is nothing like a Slayer concert. No other band elicits the type of energy aggression and pure craziness that Slayer does. I've seen them many many times. Hoping to see them again on their final tour coming around soon.

Most of the time the songs we remember from all songs are little bits of chorus but when we listen to slayer the amazing riffs and drumming is what we remember the most.
No comparison between Metallica & Slayer. Slayer almost no radio play , stayed true to themselves entire amazing career even without any social media or changing their sound to appease. Love and respect to Slayer 🤘🤘
0:11 "There was actually a tie between Led Zeppelin and Slayer" I'm reasonably sure that this is the first time from the dawn of creation that this sentence has been spoken...
Don't let the lead singer fool you, he is one of the most calm, humble and nicest guys in metal. Aside from Dio of course lol You almost never catch Tom Araya without a smile or laughing in interviews.
Slayer..my all time favorite band...got my boys listening to them...I've seen em 3 times and if it wasn't for me being out of town nxt weekend I would hit both shows down here....SLAYERRRRR!
I've seen Slayer 6 times and they were always awesome, lots of energy and aggression. I also stayed in the back because people were going crazy on the floor.
I was like 13 for my first Slayer show. Was in the pit for all the opening bands. And had to basically run out of the pit to the bleachers when Slayer came on because it was like someone blowing on an anthill just pure chaos.
Instrumentally slayer has ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITES growing up. Aggresive..melodic..(like many bands of this Era)..But Utilizing Guitar to,its Maximum.Full potential...Even..Loud ..Aggresssive music...May Require..HIGH LEVELS OF SKILL
So yea back before their Big 4 status Slayer was rarely allowed to play the same venue twice because they would get fucking destroyed!!! I've definitely seen some good friendly violent fun at Slayer sgows🤘
In the 90's, most thrash bands got along fine, the only main feud I knew about was Metallica and Megadeth, because Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica and started Megadeth. Also, when you say this song feels like it's preparing you for battle, I remember seeing news reports that the US troops in Iraq would play this kind of stuff to get themselves geared up.
You mentioned "feels like I'm preparing for battle" ironically I read fighter pilots were listening to this song to get pumped up during the first gulf war.
You're spot on... Slayer vs. Metallica was definitely a thing with Metallica's And Justice for All vs. Slayer's Seasons of the Abyss. Hell, I think it even dated back to Metallica's Master of Puppets vs. Slayer's South of Heaven albums. Metallica had the edge, but mainly because Slayer was not as main stream and wasn't quite as good overall, but that same thing made Slayer, they were the renegades. The unruly underdogs that took time to appreciate. Decades gone by... it's a tie (during that era). Metallica F'ed up and Slayer completely slaughtered them later on (from a music stand point, definitely not financially). Metallica went mainstream and killed themselves.
Been to a shit load of slayer shows starting back with reign in blood . the pits are a violent religious experience . one big fuckin fight . damn i miss that shit
Seen them in 2019 during the final command tour. They came to Raleigh NC and let me tell you bruh they fucking killed it the mosh pits was crazy their energy was insane it was awesome
1st time I saw Slayer was on South of Heaven Tour. Got a broken nose and a hairline fracture in my upper jaw. Enough said!!! As far as comparing Slayer and Metallica, there is no comparison; never was, never will be! Slayer is the the only band from the Big 4 that remained true to their roots throughout their long career. And if you were to take both their music and create MMA fighters out of it, the Slayer fighter would wipe the floor with the Metallica one. Outside of some of the German thrash bands like Kreator, Slayer was the hardest hitting, most aggressive band to tour the face of the Earth.
Ok, I just suggested this and seasons in the Abyss in another Slayer video...lol I see them now. I still suggest dead skin mask, I think it is an underrated one. I will look and see if I can find it, but would like to still see that one. On another band note, have you checked out any Type-O-Negative? They are slower, but heavy as hell. I rarely hear a singer with as deep a voice as Peter Steele had. Just another suggestion of what I think is a great band you should check out.👍 Black No 1, or Christian Woman would be good ones to start with. Great vids, keep em coming! 😎
Another great video guy, this is one of my favorite Slayer songs. Please check out Pantera's We'll grind that axe for a long time, Revolution is my name & by demon's be driven. I don't believe any of them have been reacted by anyone else yet.
This is the song that got me into Trash/Heavy Metal over 30years ago. The speed and rhythm and musical tightness is amazing. And dont ever compare them to Metallica because they shouldn't even be in the same genre of music. If you know what genre even means
I'm pretty sure Slayer fans have always also been Metallica fans. Or at the least there was mutual respect. I don't think there was ever any rivalry. I saw once Metallica was playing Slayer riffs life and James Hetfield speaking fondly of Jeff Hanneman after the news broke about Jeff's death.
Oh Man!! Here I go again!! Just finished listening to the end of the video and your comments!! Don't think Slayer was more technical than Metallica, just Far More Aggressive!! Also check out Slayer's later work ESPECIALLY on the song "REPENTLESS"!! GOTTA WATCH The Official Video!!
DAVE Lombardo is one of the greatest drummers ever he is now with suicidal tendencies whom you would love bro lights camera revolution , and how will I laugh tomorrow are bomb albums yo
To add to my last comment! They are exposing the Sickness of Our Society and the World in general which is fast sinking into the Abyss!! Which BTW Another Great Tune by Slayer called "SEASON IN THE ABYSS "!! Check it Out!!
Going to one of their concerts is like hanging out with a bunch of f****** crazy lunatics dude it's absolutely one of the best times you will have in your f****** life dude so I'm throwing my devil horns up for you dude and I hope you're having a great night good take care cluffy
Think Desert Storm when you listen to this one. The slayer/metallica thing is honestly pretty minor in the grand scheme of metal fandom feuds, but it did become more pronounced after metallica released the black album, and started going all classic rock (thanks hetfield). I hate to be that guy but you should really check out Chemical Warfare from War at the Warfield dvd
I think part of the technicality you’re referring to is coming from the drums. I may have bias being a drummer, but I think technicality in a band can often be either pushed or limited by the drummer. In this case, Dave Lombardo is the far superior drummer to Lars Ulrich. Dave is pretty widely considered one of the best metal drummers of all time. Lars is just not in that league. He’s a good arranger, but the drumming technicality is pretty limited. Dave is just an absolute beast. I can’t honestly think of a drummer that more purely embodies metal than him. And I think his playing really pushed the band. But yeah, he makes everyone he plays with sound the best they’ve ever sounded. You should watch some of his live stuff with Suicidal Tendencies. It’s a beautiful thing.
IMHO after playing guitar for 33 years and learning everything from both Slayer and Metallica as far as 1998 or so, I think Slayer is easily more difficult to play, and at much higher tempos. Nearly anything from Metallica can be played accurately without warming up (unless Lars is rushing the tempo of Creeping Death again), but there's no way you can get through Dittohead or Postmortem clean if you're cold. War Ensemble too, it's best to warm up first.
🤘SLAYER🤘 give Mandatory Suicide, Spill the Blood or Skeletons of Society a reaction, & maybe some other thrash bands, like Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide. And please homie, some more Hed Pe!! Songs, Suffa, Killing Time, Ordo Ab Chao, Here and Now, Get Ready. Thx & keep the great reactions coming 👊

Don't let the lead singer fool you, he is one of the most calm, humble and nicest guys in metal. Aside from Dio of course lol You almost never catch Tom Araya without a smile or laughing in interviews.
Skeletons of society is my fav slayer song on this album but they’re all good
Slayer..my all time favorite band...got my boys listening to them...I've seen em 3 times and if it wasn't for me being out of town nxt weekend I would hit both shows down here....SLAYERRRRR!
Yeah I was very disappointed that I missed their final show hopefully they’ll come back one more time in a few years or so
Such a great song! Especially live!
I've seen Slayer 6 times and they were always awesome, lots of energy and aggression. I also stayed in the back because people were going crazy on the floor.
Lol
I was like 13 for my first Slayer show. Was in the pit for all the opening bands. And had to basically run out of the pit to the bleachers when Slayer came on because it was like someone blowing on an anthill just pure chaos.
"when victory is to survive and death is defeat".
I seen them on the world painted blood album with Anthrax, Megadeth, Testament and Exodus, awesome show
Instrumentally slayer has ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITES growing up. Aggresive..melodic..(like many bands of this Era)..But Utilizing Guitar to,its Maximum.Full potential...Even..Loud ..Aggresssive music...May Require..HIGH LEVELS OF SKILL
I agree. Slayer is probably one of the few bands that I have listened to that can mash a combination of styles together and make it make sense.
Too bad the US were the aggressors.
I’ve seen slayer 6 times. They always kill it. Some of the most savage pits ever.
Seen them dozens of times. And No One Compares.
Archspire
Man when you said preparing for battle that is the exact feeling I get especially from ghost of war. It chillingly SS Nazi style marching drum beats.
Seen slayer with pantera morbid angel and static-x in 2000 in Chicago. Toataly BadAss!!!!!!!!!
Slayer shows were magical 😈
I hate doing dishes. So I blast this song as a run the water then get in there and WASH THE FUCK OUT OF THOSE DISHES.
I agree with you on this.
Dave Lombardo is beast for sure, absolutely love drums in this song!
Been to a shit load of slayer shows starting back with reign in blood . the pits are a violent religious experience . one big fuckin fight . damn i miss that shit
“Scorched earth the policy, the reason for the siege.”
Seen them in 2019 during the final command tour. They came to Raleigh NC and let me tell you bruh they fucking killed it the mosh pits was crazy their energy was insane it was awesome
Most violent concert I ever attended. They have a way of touching our dark side.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
One of the best Metal LPs on this Planet.
Dave Lombardo, the drummer. Got robbed son! Then didn't pay him enough cash. You need to hear the live version in Yankees Stadium.
Oh damn!
Yep he pointed out how the label was ripping them off for years. And so the label got rid of him basically.
Outside of some of the German thrash bands like Kreator, Slayer was the hardest hitting, most aggressive band to tour the face of the Earth.
i was at that wembley concert in 1990. a skinny little 19 year old. powerful and crazy
sepultura - desperate cry
React to some testament please
I second this
3rd
New World Order is one of my favorite albums. DNR is my favorite song from them post 80's
Might as well go all the way in and listen to the slayer wham mix...🤘🤘🤘
Their shows are awesome I saw them when I was 15 \m/
Dave Lombardo is the MVP, I like that :D
Slayer..seasons in the abyss
Check out the song - Funeral Hymn by Exodus. In my opinion probably Exodus best song. Nobody beats Slayer though. Nobody
More old school thrash you need to react to is the band Flotsam and Jetsam ( bass player who replaced Cliff Burton came from this band )
Flotsam is pretty cool, I agree!
Hell yeah one of the greatest songs of all times.
Dude are 100% correct. The drum beats dictate the tempo
This is an amazing song. I always think of 40k orks when I hear it now though
Agreed. Fellow guitarist here.
