Finally someone who makes sense... 2 years ago i got my first baitcaster after 25 years of spinning reels... i naturally got a left hand reel... my buddies couldnt believe it... i asked why would i want to switch hands... there only answer is.. that's just what you do... i say bologna..thank u for this video
Exactly. Why have your power hand be for reeling? Why have your left hand (if you’re a right handed person) controlling the action and the finesse? Makes zero Sense. left hand retrieve is the natural and best way for a righty!
I bought my first baitcasting reel one year ago now. I am right handed and my first baitcaster I decided to buy a left handed reel. To me it makes sense. I now have six baitcasters. What doesn't make sense is why anyone would want to ok switch hands. I wonder who started that. Silly if you ask me.
All my baitcasters are left hand. From a small BFS finesse 2 lb line to a 50lb line catfish monster. If it's not available for left hand reeling I won't get it. Why would you want to constantly switch hands while casting and retrieving. For me the whole point of a baitcaster is simplify.
I've been using left handed spinning reels for years. Last week I was on the ocean fishing with a conventional reel - which is right handed. I felt uncomfortable reeling with my right hand and handling the rod with my left. This - along with your video - helped me decide to go with a left handed reel for my first baitcaster.
Thats exactly what I did for my first baitcaster and I'm still learning it sometimes regretting I just didn't another spinning set up, but I definitely don't regret getting the reel on the side
Thanks for this. You’ve helped me make a decision. I’m right hand dominant and have used a spinning reel with left side retrieve. I bight a right handed, right side retrieve bait caster. It’s not as comfortable. So I bought the left handed, left side retrieve and returning the right handed one!
Wow!! Thank you Sir!! It felt like I fell asleep for years and then woke up and now I have to reel in fish “opposite! and also with an upside down pole!!! “. I thank you Brother because I really thought I may be the only one that thought that.
This is just a common sense video and well put. I don’t for the life of me understand why manufacturers don’t offer both sides for us fisherman who are right handed. Adding another step in the process of switching hands mid cast or when the bait hits the water is plain foolish and the explanation this is just how you do it makes no sense. Thanks for good solid view point !
I am right handed and just bought my first baitcaster, which is left handed. My question is whether switching hands after casting helps you position your hand so that you're palming the reel for the retrieval. Unless you're already palming the reel when you cast, I think you will still have to shift your right hand up the rod to palm it after casting a left handed reel right handed. I guess I'll find out when Amazon delivers my reel. Anyway, thanks for the video. Have fun fishing!
My dad bought my first spinning reel in 1957, a Mitchell CAP 305. It was right hand wind and right from the beginning it felt wrong, even though I'm right handed. My brother still has it and I got myself a CAP 304, which I still have. Ever since, I have bought left hand wind, baitcasters, level wind reels, (which were hard to find), and of course spinning reels.....I'm with you, the strength is in the right arm and the left hand just has to wind, often geared to make the job easier. Cheers....
Just discovered your site and couldn't be more pleased because I recently bought my first baitcasting reel and it is left handed, even though I am a right hander. Logic led me to reel with my left hand because I have more than 50 years experience doing so with spinning reels. Why should I waste over 50 years of experience to relearn something I don't need to think about???
Bought my first baitcaster at 32 years old today and I got it home not realizing that it was left handed. Tried it out and it feels so natural being right handed. We will see how it goes
I’ve always used spinners lefty so it made sense to use baitcasters lefty. Easy no switching.you’re saving a wasted motion. You make perfect sense to Me. I Just got into baitcasting about a year ago so when I went to pick one up ,it was right handed I didn’t realize they made lefty.lol I just knew it felt weird and was relieved that they did come in left hand models .otherwise I would Not have bought one.so now i have about 8 or 9 reels of various sizes and they are all lefty.
I am right handed. I have used RH bait casters and RH spin gear reels all my fishing years (40+). I can’t even imagine the mess I would get into with the bait caster, nor how many trees I would catch with a spinning rod if I tried LH. This is just my opinion.
The fact that most people use right handed baitcasters proves conformity trumps logic. For a right handed person, the "left handed" baitcasters make perfect sense.
Thank you I just ordered a bait caster right handed because I'm right handed so logically I thought the reel would be on the left but it was on the right and I was confused lol
I started out on a spinning reel and I switched it back and forth to get a feel and it makes so much more sense. Long story short I bought my first baitcaster and I reel with my left. Your sensitivity and hook set is so much better using your dominant hand on the rod.
I'm waiting for that moment when the fish hits right when the bait hits the water. But yeah totally agree with this video I have the same confusion as you when I bought my first baitcaster. Left handed baitcaster all dayyy!!
I’m righty but I’ve always reeled lefty. It makes more sense to me to set the hook with my dominant hand, as well as fighting the fish, while reeling with my off hand.
Looking for some expert opinion. I don't know much about reels so apologies if I am getting basics wrong. I am trying to purchase a reel for my father in law (lives in a different country) who uses a bait caster that is mounted on the bottom rather than the top of the rod and uses the right hand for retrieving. I purchased a right hand retrieve squall ii level wind PENN model just to realize it is meant for top mounting. FIL said this won't do since he is used to a bottom mounted right hand retrieve bait caster. I have searched a lot and can't find anything that fits the bill. It seems like whenever we are talking baitcaster or conventional, we are thinking it would be top mounted. Also, confirmed that he definitely doesn't use a spin caster. can someone help? Should I get a left handed bait caster and then mounting at the bottom would mean the handle reverses and becomes right handed retrieve. Would the handle and reel still work?
I first bought a freespool baitcaster in the late 60's, and as soon as they began offering them as left hand retrieve models, I started buying them and have for 55 years.....
What I think is that a right hand reel is used for cranking enormous fish like groupers or tuna because you will need to crank that huge handle and that would consider your power arm to crank, but just like you said a left hand reel is more convenient because I can cast right away with my right hand after reeling in and not having to switch hands since I’m right handed plus my power hand is always in control of my lure.
I've heard of some people using both for different situations. I've tried and it doesn't work for me, but to each their own 🙂. When I was learning baitcasters I learned on a right hand retrieve. I can use both, but left handed feels better for me in every situation. Thanks for commenting!
When I first picked up a baitcaster, they were all right handed. I have lost countless bass flipping while switching hands from cast to reel! I have much more control with my right hand as far as casting and rod control goes! All my spinning & baitcast reels are left hand crank! Just makes sense!
Before I started fishing I had previously broken both arms; Ulna and Radius snapped on both and a bone protrusion on the left as well. I have to cast a bait caster with my right and reel with my right. It's physically uncomfortable to do it any other way.
Thanks man, I'm about to buy a bait caster reel and was a bit confused when it asked if i want left or right handed, i'm like you i 'm right handed and use my left hand to reel in so I think i'll stick with it.
Pfew... I'm right handed and got me a left handed reel. Since my spinning reel is with the handle on the left side, it felt completely natural to get me a baitcasting reel with the handle on the left side too. But suddenly I have started noticing people on youtube using the oposite side reels even though they were right hand dominant people. Good... I'm calm now. :D
I just picked up bait casting a couple of weeks ago I am right handed and both reels were RH retrieve got used to them quick but I definitely agree my rod work would be better being worked by my dominant side(RH). I just got my lews mach crush in the mail today and they messed up by sending me the combo with the LH retrieve.. Im thinking on it researching pros and cons and hell I'm just gonna go with it. Honestly it makes sense, but to each there own.
You're absolutely right, to each their own. It's really whatever works best for you. The Lews Mach Crush is amazing. I have it in LH retrieve and love it.
I think the reason the early baitcasters were mostly right-hand crank is because baitcasters were initially used by saltwater fisherman. In deep waters with big fish and long landing times, you DO want to crank with your right hand (assuming you are right handed). Thus, the right-hand crank baitcaster was born. The design just carried over as baitcasters found popularity with bass fishermen as well.
Hey, thanks for making this video! I have that dilemma now. I've been taught to use left-handed (handle on the left) spinning reel since I was a kid although I am left handed (left footed too) :D I want to try out baitcasting set up, and I am so torn beentween those two options, because ...I would love to be able to cast accurately with left hand, but I am not sure if I would be able to get used to reeling in with right hand :D Another thing is, when casting with both hands, I am used to casting behind right shoulder.
Im right handed and ride skateboard goofy foot. So me using a left handed reel makes sense. Id rather have that sensitivity of the rod in my right hand and forearm. Rt hand BC feels strange to me. So now i have a rt hand Shimano Curado MGL i dont want to use.
Good video. Left hand for spinning, casting and fly fishing. The rod should be an extension of your dominant hand. Doing anything else seems illogical.
The only thing i can think of as to why right hand reels are used among many is that you can reel faster vs reeling left handed.i notice all these pros is bringing in the fish fast as they can.
I hold the rod with my strong hand (right), and reel with my left, so I believe u should hold the rod with your strongest hand, and reel with your weakest, I would think that u would want more control with your strong hand which ever one that is, so like this video explains set the hook with your dominant hand! But whatever works for u lol!
Where the opposite I have to use my left hand to cast the pole in the water this what I do put the pull back in my right hand and start turning are confused good day
I've been wondering for awhile why right-handed people were using right-handed baitcasters and having to switch at the end of the cast. I'm left hand and use a right-handed baitcaster and i dont have to switch. Just makes a lot more sense to me. Good video.
Totally agree, i found many in denial, the pro especially keep denial switching hand is unnecessary at all. Keep denial that why on earth when your dominant hand is right hand, you will be better on your left hand rod handling art? It like you start learning pencil writing with right hand until you can spin fidgeting pencil with right hand suddenly when wanted to use pen, they force you to write with your left hand! This is big disappointment for very long time denial until LH BC was released..its a bless.
The spinning reel set up got it right using the dominant hand to control the rod and finessing the Lure. Bait casting set ups make no sense using your non-dominant hand to finesse the lure, but to each his own.
I've dabbling with baitcasters for a few years but just recently started really getting into them, I decided to buy a nice reel recently and before I got too comfortable with the right handed ones I decided to make the switch. Makes way more sense to reel with your left hand and control the rod with your right, plus I don't have to switch hands after casting.
I feel like the only reason anyone ever originally switched sides on baitcasters compared to their spinning gear is because the first baitcasters were made right hand only for the most part. It was a forced switch, now everyone thinks its part of the technique or something 😂😂 I just don't see the benefit at all. Why would I wanna have to cast with my dominant hand, switch hands, and then work the rod with my undominant hand and reel with my dominant? its completely uncomfortable and goofy.
For me....these aren't opinions...they are facts. I find it so much more difficult to reel with my right hand and holding a 20 plus pound fish with my left hand gets so tiring. Its also very hard to find left handed conventional reels for trolling.
My first baitcaster was a right hand. I thought I had to do that because all the "cool" guys on youtube used right hand. Now I have switched back to left.
I'm right handed and reel with my right. I don't switch after casting...YOU cast with left...and... isn't it more important to use your dominant hand to be able to adjust the drag and of course reeling? Setting the hook does not need a lot of force in my experience (just a quick rod lift)...but adjusting drag while fighting a fish can be a challenge if you don't use your more dexterous hand.
I have a buddy who is right handed and reels with his right hand too. Some people prefer that and that's great! I cast with my right and prefer reeling with my left. It's just what I prefer. I mostly use baitcasters and the drag is right there where I reel, I can adjust it with my left thumb back and forth with no issues. No issues with my spinning reels either. The drag has never been an issue for me or anyone I know who are right handed and reel left. Drag isn't my biggest concern. It's working the lures, jerking, twitching, etc. My right hand has way better control for working baits then my left. It's more precise and it reacts faster for hook sets. But that's just me, everyone fishes different. That's the beauty of fishing is finding what works best for you. Thanks for the comment Lo Loo! By the way, I did try learning on baitcasters with a right handed reel. I can do it, but had much better luck when I tried a lefty.
OK LETS FORGET A 10 LBS BASS AND GO FOR A 100 LBS TARPON , YOUR RIGHT HANDED WHICH MEAN YOUR RIGHT ARM IS YOUR STRONGEST SIDE OF THE TWO BY SOMETIMES BY A MILE , WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO FIGHT A 100 LBS TARPON HOLDING THE ROD AND PULLING THE FISH WITH YOUR WEAKEST SIDE? IF YOU WAS TO INDIAN ARM WRESTLER WITH SOMEONE WILL YOU WRESTLER WITH YOUR WEAK SIDE , NO YOU WILL USE YOUR RIGHT ARM BECAUSE IT YOUR STRONGEST OF THE TWO AND WHAT YOUR LEFT HAND WILL BE DOING WHAT? MMM SAME THING WHEN USING A FISHING ROD AND REEL
I don't care what everyone else does. My dominant hand needs to be doing rod work. Period. I don't know why there's so much staunch conformity over this.
Sorry but 99 percent of left hand retrieve reposition their hand once they've cast.I palm my reel after casting ,and you can't do it without using your left hand .never lost a fish and can reel faster with my right hand .I tried the Left hand retrieve doesn't work for me.
Another "great" american thing: right handed people using right handed baitcasters xD Let me introduce you to some logic: If you are right handed: you hold your rod with your right hand and reel with left hand. Yes, thats how easy it is
LOL you only spin/reel from your right hand if you are LEFT HANDED!!!!!!!! People are making this harder than it needs to be.... Right handed you cast with your right hand and reel with left. Now switch those for left handed. I feel dumb having to second guess myself..
I think you are confused! Right hand reels does not mean they are for right hand dominant (right-handed) people. It simply means the handle is on the right side of the reel and you will have to use your right hand to reel in. And vice versa for left hand reels. It is not illegal for right hand dominant people to use left hand reels if they are more comfortable reeling in with their left hand. Also, reel manufacturers do not advertised that their "Righthand" reels are only for right-handed people and "Lefthand" reels are only for left-handed people. It is just and indication which side the handle is located on the reel.
No, I don't think I'm confused. They just call them right hand and left hand reels. I'm right handed and I don't use a right handed reel (or a reel with the handle on the right side as you say) I use a reel with the handle on the left side (left hand reel) for example. If you watch the video, it is about why one would use a right handed vs. left handed reels. Especially coming off left hand spinning reels. And again, it was just my personal RECOMMENDATIONS, not telling anyone what to do. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
@@platinumfishing5962 Think of it this way.... They do not identify their reels based on who will use it. They identify and call it based on which side is the handle located.

Makes zero

I'm a lefty and I do use a right handed reel. It's a lot better. Nice vid by the way
Thank you so much.. I was very confused about bait casters but this really helped!
Glad it helped!
Wow!! Thank you Sir!! It felt like I fell asleep for years and then woke up and now I have to reel in fish “opposite! and also with an upside down pole!!! “. I thank you Brother because I really thought I may be the only one that thought that.
Thanks for the video! You're well spoken and clearly put in effort to bring us a quality video!
Thanks for the kind words! Much appreciated

I’ve always used spinners lefty so it made sense to use baitcasters lefty. Easy no switching.you’re saving a wasted motion. You make perfect sense to Me. Yep I got used to it ! Can use either hand just as well
I am right handed. I have used RH bait casters and RH spin gear reels all my fishing years (40+). I can’t even imagine the mess I would get into with the bait caster, nor how many trees I would catch with a spinning rod if I tried LH. This is just my opinion.

100% correct! Now... how do I switch my older reels into left handed models? I've never liked them on the right!
Awesome video, I’m 41 yo and just now trying to get in to bait caster
Exact video I was looking for
It just makes sense you hold the rod with your dominant hand for strength and balance. Reeling is easily done with your other hand effortlessly.
I'm waiting for that moment when the fish hits right when the bait hits the water. But yeah totally agree with this video I have the same confusion as you when I bought my first baitcaster. Left handed baitcaster all dayyy!!

The spinning reel set up got it right using the dominant hand to control the rod and finessing the Lure. Bait casting set ups make no sense using your non-dominant hand to finesse the lure, but to each his own.

If anybody out there is having a hard time wearing out reeling a baitcaster all day, maybe take up sewing or something.
How did y’all fishing with an open face? How ever you did bring that over to a bait caster.
I can’t find a left handed baitcaster. No stores sell them. Literally all right handed
Also those guys complain about left handed baitcaster like it's awkward for them for some reason
It is awkward and I cast left hand I have both left-handed and right-handed reels I much prefer a right hand baitcaster
Nice video.
USA, is left hand 🤭
Ah just say it. The old way is stupid.
Another "great" american thing: right handed people using right handed baitcasters xD
Let me introduce you to some logic:
If you are right handed: you hold your rod with your right hand and reel with left hand.
I hear you man, thanks again
