  • All of the clips in the video were filmed on Saturday July 10th, 2021. This video summarizes the first day of my 2 day weekend canoe trip from Washago to Port Severn on the Trent-Severn Waterway.
    There has been a 10 month delay between when I filmed this video and when I am posting it. On similar videos I've posted in the past, I've received comments from viewers who felt inspired to try a similar trip of their own. I decided to save this mini-series to post at the very beginning of the paddling season so that anyone who's interested to trying this section of the Trent-Severn can start planning their trip right away.
    Strava for Day 1: / strava
    In this episode, I was dropped off at the boat launch next to Centennial Park in Washago where I paddling northwest to the Swift Rapids Lockstation. I took the canoe through 2 locks: Lock 42 - Couchiching and Lock 43 - Swift Rapids. I paddled through the Severn Canal, the Severn River, and Sparrow Lake. I paddled under a total of 5 bridges including the Highway 11, the Severn Canal CN Railway Swing Bridge, Canal Rd, Hamlet Bridge 57 (Canning Rd), and the Hydro Glen CN Railway Bridge. After arriving at my destination, I spent the night camping on the bottom side of the Swift Rapids locks.

    Rideau Canal Trip (2021): • Kingston to Upper Brew...
    The canoe is a Bluewater Peterborough 16', made of Kevlar and manufactured in Guelph, ON in the early 1990's. The GPS I used for the trip is a Garmin eTrex 30. I filmed this video using a Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone. While I normally film with this device in 4K, I mistakenly had the camera set to a lower resolution for the duration of this day.
    I hope you enjoyed this video. Please COMMENT and subscribe!
    Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for sharing. You were sitting in front of my place when you declared it was 2pm about a few hundred meters short of the first narrows you paddled through. I have paddled from there to a portage into Rat Lake, just short of lock 43 on the north shore. Two short portages with a short paddle through a Beaver dam lake in between them and you're there. Good camping and good fishing in there.

    Looks like you had a great first day of this little trip! I'm glad that you had the chance to complete the section of the canal that you didn't get to do the year before! Now I'm looking forward to seeing you ride your canoe on the Big Chute Marine Railway in the next video!

    We came out of the Trent Severn Conservation Reserve and headed to Washago in early June of this year. The Hydro Glen stretch was not very fun at all lol Thank you for sharing :)

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  Рік тому

      Was it not very fun because of all the motor boat traffic? That was the only part that I didn't enjoy.

    • @robintheoutside
      @robintheoutside Рік тому

      @@cjhoyle The traffic wasn't bad. The water levels on the other hand were very high so the current was extremely fast through the Glen and a couple of other pinch pionts. So heading up stream towards Washago was quite the fight.

    Your introduction for different places are really great for travellers to know these places. I have one advice for you. Could please type the name of the place on your video when you arrive key places or heritages, such as a bridge, a dam, or an intersection between 2 rivers. would be better for us to know where it is. Thanks for the efforts you made.

      Thanks. My primary motivation for making these kind of videos is to motivate others to go on similar adventures, so I try to include a lot of relevant details in my videos. In addition to the words said in the video, I also include a lot of details in the video description (the text which appears below the video), such as the names of all the bridges and locks. Most of the time I was also include a link to Strava where you can see a map of exactly where I traveled. At the same time, I would never claim to be any kind of canoeing or bicycling expert, and I feel it's important that everyone does a sufficient amount of their own research before traveling somewhere themselves.

    Awesome video CJ! I really enjoyed it. Adding this to my wish list now. I would love to try this in my kayak though. We have a canoe but I wonder if I could pack the tent and food in 2 kayaks. Are we able to camp at all the locks? I remember in high school staying at a lock for our outdoors club canoe trip. It was the year the big Barrie tornado went through. Can’t wait for part 2 and more of your adventures.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  2 роки тому +1

      I'm sure it would work equally well in a kayak. Considering it can be done in 2 days, there should be less to pack than on a longer trip. Camping is allowed at most lockstations on the Trent-Severn Waterway, but not all of them (details on their website).

    Hello, CJHoyle. Your video is so inspiring me to do the same thing. I would like to do some basic paddling for it. I plan to kayak from Black river Wildness Park to WASHAGO green river. Is this route accessible and is it friendly for beginners? Thank you. I also want to know where I can found the paddle routes information in ontario.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  2 роки тому

      Thanks, that's awesome! The Trent-Severn Waterway route is the only place I've ever paddled in the Washago area. When I want to research potential paddling routes, I typically just search for information on Google. There are also several Facebook groups with knowledgeable paddlers who are happy to share their experiences and answer questions.
