  • On May 12, 1863, lead elements of McPherson's Corps marched toward the town of Raymond, MS as Grant's army moved closer and closer to Vicksburg. Sgt. Osborn Oldroyd of Company E, 20th Ohio Infantry, found himself in command of his company after his superiors were incapacitated. That night, he recorded what happened in his diary. These are his words, read on the spot where the 20th fought that day.

    These kind of individual soldiers are always fascinating to me. A personal story just humanizes a historical figure to you in a way that a book can't and makes them feel more real. That they had hopes and dreams too. Almost like they could be your family or friends.

    Outstanding storytelling, Chris. I am especially moved by the last piece of information about making sure that Waddell's grave was marked. Unless they fight very hard to hold onto it, war robs soldiers of their humanity. We all would do well to remember that, both to make sure we are slow to beat the drums of war, and to be sure we do what we can to help soldiers hold onto or rediscover their humanity.

    Great original content :) I’ve watched a ton of your videos since first seeing your reactions while sitting at home during covid lockdowns. It’s undeniable that your reaction videos are by far the most popular content and you use their success to fund your original content. Nothing wrong with that strategy but I feel like you should try integrating them together. It might seem like a dumb idea but your unorthodox take on reacting to videos is what people love watching becuase you add so much knowlege - and watching as you react to videos then make your own content makes me wonder what if they happened in the same video. I know it’s never really done and a risk to the success of the already popular style pure reaction videos but I feel like it would be a perfect combination of entertainment and education to pause throughout some specific reactions and spend 2-3 minutes at that historical location and get a glimpse of your original content inside the reaction video. Just an idea :) I love both styles of content regardless, keep on keepin on

    My 5th great grandfather was a confederate private in the civil war. His name was John Tillman May. He was in the 24 R. Infantry of Alabama. There were a few lesser known skirmishes he fought at. But he fought at the bloody battle of Chickamauga. And the sad thing about this, is he died shortly after the war ended along with his wife, Martha Jane. I love my family and I want to find more things, we’re definitely were, so don’t be surprised if you find something you don’t like about them. I’m also kinda interested in hearing y’all’s personal connections to the civil war, feel free to tell me, it would be interesting.

    These are my favorite war stories. Maybe "favorite" is an inappropriate word, but at least the stories that move me. It can get easy to lose the humanity and inhumanity of war when talking about the generals and "the Army of the Potomac battled the whatever on this date" and things like that. It's good to have stories that ground things again. That's why books like Poilu and Band of Brothers are so good. They are human stories, not grand strategy stories. I'm looking forward to the book about the Ohio regiment.

    There are bonds of all sorts in this world of ours,
    Fetters of friendship and ties of flowers,
    And true lover’s knots, I ween;
    The girl and the boy are bound by a kiss,
    But there’s never a bond, old friend, like this,
    We have drank from the same Canteen!
    It was sometimes water, and sometimes milk,
    And sometimes apple-jack “fine as silk;”
    But whatever the tipple has been
    We shared it together in bane or bliss,
    And I warm to you, friend, when I think of this,
    We drank from the same Canteen!
    The rich and great sit down to dine,
    They quaff to each other in sparkling wine,
    From glasses of crystal and green;
    But I guess in their golden potations they miss
    The warmth of regard to be found in this,
    We drank from the same Canteen!
    We have shared our blankets and tents together,
    And have marched and fought in all kinds of weather,
    And hungry and full we have been;
    Had days of battle and days of rest,
    But this memory I cling to and love the best,
    We drank from the same Canteen!
    For when wounded I lay on the center slope,
    With my blood flowing fast and so little hope
    Upon which my faint spirit could lean;
    Oh! then I remember you crawled to my side,
    And bleeding so fast it seemed both must have died,
    We drank from the same Canteen!

    Hi I presume that Thomas Calvin Waddell was of Scottish descent. Firstly because his middle name is Calvin which would suggest a Presbyterian background. The surname Waddell is known in Scotland though it is usually pronounced as waddle by native Scots though it is often pronounced the way you did as well. Thirdly the name Thomas may have been given to him by his parents if they were adherents of the Free church of Scotland after Thomas Chalmers who led the breakaway.
    This is the first time I have written to you so may I add an off topic comment while I am at it. Are you aware that during WW1 Inverness was used by the US Navy as a base for mine laying in the North Sea?
