I Met a Descendant of a Man Killed by BILLY THE KID - and it changed my view of history

  • On April 1, 1878 the Regulators, including Billy the Kid, ambushed Lincoln County Sheriff William Brady, deputy George Hindman, and others on the streets of Lincoln, New Mexico. The traditional story is that Brady was a corrupt man in the pocket of the corrupt Murphy-Dolan faction and that Billy the Kid was getting justice for the murdered John Tunstall. The truth is much more complicated than that.

    When we can make personal connections to history it reminds of us of how small we are on the grand scale of everything. It’s a humbling and yet important lesson for everyone to learn. We as individuals are the culmination of all of human history.

    • @1971Corwin
      @1971Corwin 2 роки тому +5

      Wouldn't such a connection make you feel LESS small? If you could make no connection between yourself and anyone else that would imply such a massive timescale and enormous distance between us that we were completely, individually insignificant. The existence of such connections would kind of have to imply movement in the opposite direction.

    I can just imagine your face lighting up like a kid in a candy store when William told you he's a descendant to Al, what an amazing opportunity to learn the other side of the story on a historic event.

    This. This is why I love history, It's one thing to hear about it from people who study it. It's another to hear from people that either lived it, or know someone that did.

      That’s why it’s important to listen, especially to previous generations. Everyone has a story and is linked to historical events, either directly or indirectly. Even we are living in history right now.

    One of the things I most admire about you is your ability to be so neutral and open to changing your mind from new experiences. Many people would not be willing to change their minds out of fear as being seen as unintelligent. You are a role model for all historians.

    This is one of the reasons I love your channel. I grew up is a very conservative family so I had many "stong" right leaning views for most of my life. Only for the past few years have I been able to realize that nobody has all the answers. So I wanna thank you because you've help me see the I have biases and that basically nothing in this world is just black and white. I feel that its help me grow as a person and has help me connect more with people who a younger me would just see as "people who don't know what they're talking about". And this little vlog is a great example of that. Thanks

      No matter how badly they want to put a white hat on Brady , he was corrupt and aided and abided in the murder of Tunstal . No excusing that .

    A UA-camr once told me “everything in history is connected.” It’s fascinating how this contextualizes not just the story around Billy the Kid, but also the Extra Credits series you just did concerning the Potato famine. We heard the appalling numbers about how many thousands died and thousands more immigrated and it is so easy to say “oh they came to America and settled in Boston or New York” and think “end of story”. As you say, everyone of them was their own person with their own story and life and family.

    That is so cool! This personal connections to history is amazing! I wish I could have those I probably could the most I know was from my great grandmother whom passed almost a year ago. It’s always interesting to hear about the lives of people living through the time periods we learn in school. She told me about how she grew up sharing cropping. And that her school were it was one big school house and the older kids would teach the younger ones. She also talked about how hard it was to keep a household while going to the hospital to learn how to be a nurse. And although she didn’t finish the program they hired her on as a medical aide. My hometown had one hospital in the whole county. Now that hospital she worked at is no longer in service it’s a Reddy Urgent care now. It is literally accords the road from the land that my family’s property.

    That goes along with something I have noticed more and more in the last years. Oral history, local legends or just local gossip might be unreliable sometimes, but often deliver information and perspective nowhere else to be found. Even if you go to a local event and then read about it in the newspaper it often sounds like a totally different event or at least a very superficial explanation. A lot of common knowledge from "the locals" is just never recorded into a history book or some official sources, so the knowledge just disappears.

      Fortunately I am not, hence the latitude expressed at the end of my first sentence. If you don't agree now then I would be right in saying you are at least a very arrogant person making bold statements that are not factual with little to no schooling in objectivity and yet it is safe to assume you are still more than nothing but my possibly still judgemental friend. You could be of great service someday by excusing yourself because of you may still have a proclivity to bias for one thing. If William Brady was a farmer who left Ireland during the potato famine I can see why he would treat black soldiers well when he led them.
    He likely had personal experience of being treated as "lesser" by british officials and seems like the kind of man that, whatever else faults he might have had, would not treat others like he had been treated.

    I figured William Brady was a figure not much different than Wyatt Earp. They have to earn a living for themselves and they wind up involving themselves in the politics of where they have made home so they end up on a faction or side that opposes another side. Who becomes the hero and the villain is often the result of a multitude of factors and players.
