12:41 Fun fact: there was another reason why Wu was summon to Gaozong. You see Emperor Wang was also having a bit of a rivalry with the Consort Xiao who manage to make Gaozong a father. Jealous and fearing that her position was under threat, Wang suggested to Gaozong to bring Wu In the equation to end the rivalry. And unfortunately, both for Wang and Xiao, They would become victims of Wu.

9:45 Interesting fact: Wu Zetian's rise to power was so unheard of at the time in China that historians that came along a bit later in China quite literally didn't have words for it. The only word they had for what we would call an 'Empress' exclusively referred to the consort/wife to the Emperor. They didn't have a word in Chinese that carried the connotation of a woman ruling in her own right/name so they basically called her the "Woman Emperor."

I think Mary I gets an extremely unfair rap in general history. While her hatred of Protestants was well established, she was otherwise a very kind, gentle, compassionate Queen who was known for caring for her subjects - again, only those who agreed with her religious policy - and everyone who met her never had anything but the most glowing things to say about her modesty, courtesy and gentility. As well as her capability and intelligence. But she was also traumatised by her inability to become pregnant, something she desperately wanted, not just because of dynastic succession but she evidently craved to be a mother and provide for her children consistently in a way her parents couldn’t (and wouldn’t in her father’s case) for her. Even to the point of developing a phantom pregnancy because of how desperately she wanted that, which then put severe strain on her marriage with Philip whom she loved deeply but he never reciprocated.
In totality, I feel pity and sympathy for Mary. Her hatred of Protestantism did come from a genuine and sincere belief that Rome was the correct path because the Catholic Church was the only thing on earth which had never failed her nor abandoned her. She ordered some terrible things to be carried out in her name but… evil? Worthy of being put on the same as the others on this list? Absolutely not.

@@jdotoz I wouldn’t say so, certainly not on religious policy. Elizabeth tried to maintain a tolerant stance towards Catholics and dissenters with an Anglican policy that could please most people. It was only after 1570 when the Pope effectively said it was moral to murder her that the harsh anti-Jesuit policy and enforcing of recusancy laws came into effect, with several Catholic plots uncovered during her reign showing that fear was at least somewhat justified.
On a personal level, I think Elizabeth was worse. More vain, pompous, egotistical and arrogant than Mary was, eager to entertain suitors but unwilling to yield power to any of them. Doesn’t mean that her achievements shouldn’t be counted, and the Tilbury Speech was the most important moment of the Tudor dynasty, but she was a very flawed person regardless.

When it’s made possible that Catholics have a religious obligation to kill you, I think it’s at least somewhat understandable why Catholicism would come to be seen as synonymous with treason, as opposed to Mary who had no such excuse.

3:40 Actually, there were reasons why Henry's marriage couldn't be annulled. They only had married under an dispense, as Catherine had been married to Henry's older brother Arthur. This meant that Catherine and Arthur had never consummated their marriage and hence Henry couldn't now argue that opposite. Also, given the many children Henry and Catherine had together (though only one girl survived beyond childhood) it was clear that Henry and Catherine had consummated the marriage and lived together as husband and wife for many years.
Political pressure might have prevented the Pope do annull the marriage anyway but in the process it pressured him to make the right decision. Hence, it is false that the marriage was not dissolved only because of politics.

One important part of the Elisabeth Báthory story is that she was the biggest creditor to the emperor, there was a pandemic at the time most of the girls in her boarding school died and her "accomplices" were tortured by the court.
She was the richest widow in the world at the time and had no heirs, it was common to burn women like her as witches to get their money, but as a countess she was too high up in the aristocracy to be burned as a witch.
And Elisabeth Báthory claimed innocents till her death.
The emperor never paid his debts.

    • @TB688
      @TB688 3 місяці тому +1

A few things very wrong here.
First of, she had 3 kids living at the time, including a son who got everything. Her servants being tortured was also standard practice at the time and not really by the court since Thurzó made it very clear to his wife that his mission was to protect the Bathory family. It was never about getting money from her.
Standard punishment for her crimes would be to pay damage to the affected families(noble families naturally, killing peasants wasn't a crime) so again, if she had been declared guilty, King wouldn't get anything.
But Thurzó did it all behind closed door and made sure that Elizabeth would never stand trial to protect the family.
The king got nothing, Bathory still had all it's wealth and any debt if it even existed) would still be there but her family never came to collect nor did the king mess with her son or other family members.
Religious persecution might be a interesting theory(she was a protestant afterall) but even that theory is very weak.

@@motionpictures6629 Wikipedia is all over the place and is generally unreliable.
No money was ever given to the Emperor since again, he had no right to it. He was never an affected party and even if he was, she was never tried and found guilty so no punishment(aka a fine) could ever been handed out.
Not to mention that the whole thing about Emperor owing her money is most likely fake.
There are no reports from period that suggest that he had taken a loan from the family and the first time that was ever mentioned was from a discredited book from the early 20-century that never bothered to state the source on that. The book contains numerous other errors as well hence the book is discredited but for some reason that myth of the loan managed to survive and that discredited book is the source of it.
So no, there was no loan. The sad truth of it was, Elizabeth came from a inbred family(not uncommon by nobility at the time) with a history of insanity(again,. not uncommon, one tends to follow the other) and she either had a sadistic side from the start or developed it as she got older. She most likely didn't kill over 600 women but can be an issue since killing peasants wasn't a crime afterall so they wouldn't count those.
I'm a big fan of hers and I find her to be a fascinating woman and I too was so into the whole "she was innocent" story including the Loan myth.
But after more study, I'am more in the "guilty" camp now which makes her even more interesting really since it opens up so many more questions.
Why did she do it? How many did she kill? If she killed peasants which she was allowed to do, what made her change and go after nobles and break the law?
      So many interesting questions.

@@NefariousKoel Well the servants claimed around 30-60 women but under torture and we know today that confessions under torture are usually terrible and unreliable. Which is probably one reason why that myth started.
And it is renaissance times and I do think alot of what has been claimed about her is exaggerated.
So I can see when looking at it from a modern perspective how that myth started to appear.
There is alot of "oh this can't real" in her story that people looking at other explanations that will make sense is understandable.
I did a paper on her years ago and many people thought I had just made up a character and I was firmly in the "innocent" camp at that time since no one had heard of her and the story sounded so outrageous.

VTH watches little baby get splattered with shocked look: "I have questions......" Me too, VTH. Me too..... and then "Elizabeth Bathory wasn't a queen, but her story more than makes up for it." Literally everyone who has heard the name: "We'll give you a pass."

Do you know how many history things repeat that part of the story? A LOT

It always amazes me that back in the ye old tyme...women could rule an entire country when no men are around, but could not live on her own, run her own business, or vote in elections. It is the ultimate face palm.

I'm only 11 minutes in but yeah I'm not a big fan of the humour. To me it comes across as his trying to hard. On a related note I'm considering stop watching Mr. Terry History. Because of his constant laughing and mumbling that adds nothing to the video while it's still running.

Most of it is not meant to be "haha" funny, it's just a style of presentation.
I understand that it might be grating to some because we're talking about the lives of actual people here, but I'm fine with it. I just view it like I would read an Asterix comic.
