    Way cool album!!!
My uncle John worked for NASA throughout the manned space program, from Mercury to the Space Shuttle.
I believe his areas of expertise were in Heat Shielding and Communications.
I remember visiting one day, to find the dining room table covered in papers and I saw, for the first time, a Texas Instruments Scientific Calculator.
When I asked what her was working on, he explained that he was trying to determine the optimum surface finish for the nose cone on "The Re-entry vehicle". (It wasn't called the Space Shuttle yet).
He had mostly used a Slide Rule prior to the Shuttle, and still had one on the table to check his work against the "new" calculator.
As a 20 year old, I had "Earthrise" as my wall paper. It was 8 sheets of wall paper that covered one whole wall of my bedroom.
I took my time lining up each sheet and it came out perfect!

As they say in Germany, vairy eenteresting mein Herr.
And it was just that, very interesting. It was just laden with history for us to listen to and to enjoy.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Fran.

For data storage nothing beats acid free paper for longevity, though stone and fired ceramic tablets does have the record for longevity, though the most common things found are tax records and invoices and receipts.

Really interesting that they don't flinch away from talking about the fundamental importance of the Germans and the Russians, just 25 years after World War 2 and transitioning into the Cold War.

Well I just lost a Seagate 4 TB mechanical hard drive it is not the controller that controls the USB it's actually on the actual hard drive control board Amtrak head alignment is stored on that control board so I don't know how reliable both solid-state or mechanical hard drives really are unfortunately I think the best bet to backup data is to have a server with a rates that can Self auto detect when a drive is failing and back the drive data up to other drives automatically

NAND Flash is mostly write dependent for lifetime provided you power the drives at a minimum every three months for the drive to refresh the contents and do any housekeeping. You'd also want to use a filesystem capable of detecting and correcting bit errors as NAND flash is more susceptible to unrecoverable bit errors than other forms of media. It's generally best practice to use flash media as a working drive then offload to something else for cold storage, hard drives need somewhat regular usage too to prevent the mechanisms from seizing but much less frequently and bad sectors and bit errors tend to be easier to recover from.

Actually the Germans who where captured by the Russians where treated quite well. The major compliant was they never where part of the process of rocket making. They where only used as consultants, data was given to them to analyze and parts of designs where reviewed by them and they answered questions about their V2 design. They were later released in the mid 50s and just returned to regular life in either East or West Germany. If you can find the books by Willy Ley he interviewed some of them

According to Alvin Cox (Seagate chairman) and his report in JEDEC (I'm afraid UA-cam won't let me attach a link), a typical solid state drive will store information for about two years at a temperature of 25°C and about a year at 30. Every 5 additional degrees when turned off reduces the storage life by about twice.
Solid state drives for enterprises have the following characteristics: if such drives operate at 40° and are idle at 25°, then the information will be retained for only 20 weeks, and in general the JEDEC standard requires storage for at least 3 months. In the worst conditions, losses can begin within a week, this happens if the SSD is used in cold conditions and stored in a hot environment.

Since NAND flash memory is a charge in a cell it requires to be refreshed once in a while, so I would not be archiving anything on solid state

So much documented history sent in viewer mail! Time Life vinyl too?? So much we should never take for granted, and yet with the internet we kind of have... Hard copies on paper, books can sure last a long time in proper storage. Lest we resort to binary on carved stone.
Thumb drives haven't failed on me yet, unlike external hard drives. But SSDs will have control board faults like HDDs that even though they're protected from radiation of all kinds, they're still susceptible to static electricity and fabrication cost cutting. The only way to keep anything forever is to continually make diversified copies. But rationally, it eventually gets curated.

Archival (cold backups) use of SSDs aren't very good idea. But AFAIK if they are powered on at least every few months it would be fine. The memory cells are (roughly?) tiny super caps? Fran would understand the theory papers better than I

Fran that was fantastic I really enjoyed it. I have watched all your videos. I am also an Electronic engineer. I am 72 years old. My electronics and software is used all over the world in the narrow textile industry not that I ever made money out of it my innovation and design but the company I worked for did. I have grown up from valve through transistors intergated components card then microprocessors like the signetics 2650 then development like C, basic etc then windows software development electronics I am also transgender MTF for the last 17 years. You are an inspiration thankyou Ashleigh 🤗💖

Another great video, Fran. I was 7 when the landing happened. I remember by parents waking me up in the middle of the night. I guess it was around 3am here in germany. I still have the book about the moon landing my mother bought to rme. Your book and box are amazing. But now I've got a question. After watching lot's of UA-cam content from the US. Why does noone even try to pronounce foreign names correctly. There is no "t h sound" in german. Oberth is pronounced "ohbeard". The video I watched before this one was about the Odysseus moon lander. The name is greek and is pronounced "ohdissoyss" Like in "Dr. Seuss" ;)

It’s the perfect size to sink between the rear seat and the trunk space, or under the front seats. Been there, done that.
These SSDs work great for editing on, to keep the wear off the drive inside the PC. They are about as fast as internal SSD, assuming you have a fast USB link. They are either higher end of USB 3 or USB 4.

I would be very interested in your take on digital archive, I talked to a photographer once anf he had gone to Blu-ray discs in the 2000s, but I’ve always wondered about this. Especially from an architectural perspective- drawings used to be physical and fairly straightforward to archive papers- but new works are drawn digitally, so “original blueprints” of new works of important architecture may not even be viewable in 100 years depending on the file type.
