How to make solder paste flux and liquid flux

- Many friends know that flux is very important when soldering.
Today we are only talking about flux and not how to solder is correct.
Fluxes include rosin, paste flux, liquid flux, etc.
As far as I know, the main component of paste flux and liquid flux is rosin.
And rosin is the most basic and practical flux.
But in the process of use, because the rosin is solid, sometimes it is not convenient to use.
Today I will share with you how to make rosin into a liquid or paste flux.
It’s actually very simple, just dissolve the rosin in alcohol.
Try to use higher concentration alcohol, such as 95% medical alcohol
Industrial alcohol can also.
However, industrial alcohol contains a small amount of methanol, aldehydes, organic acids, etc.
Harmful to humans, so it's best not to use industrial alcohol.
If a large piece of rosin is best made into small pieces or powder, it will dissolve faster.
Alcohol will evaporate. When you think it is too thick, just add some alcohol to it.

The US Army taught me how to solder. For electronics you use rosin core solder. Rules to get a good solder joint. 1. components must be tightly touching and immobile. The tip of the soldering iron must be clean and newly tinned. A small amount of solder is placed no the tip to aid in heat transfer. Place the tip in contact with the parts to be joined. Heat the parts and touch the solder to the parts. In a short time the solder will melt. When the solder melts remove the iron and solder. If you are working on electronic gear clean the printed circuit board to remove rosin and check for solder splatter that can cause a short. To tin a wire, heat the wire while touching with the solder. Start near the insulation. When the solder starts to melt, pull the tip and the solder to the end of the wire.
The liquid flux is real, but the paste? No way. At 1:40, the mix in the jar is already dark yellow and it’s still liquid. Later in the video, it’s lighter, and has gone chunky. As someone who has made my own rosin flux before, i can tell you, you’d have to add a lot more rosin to make it thick, so it’d be much darker (not lighter), and it becomes sticky and smooth, like thick syrup, not chunky. The stuff on the toothpick is clearly commercial flux.
I made quite similar paste before I saw this video. The paste is not commercial. Commercial paste is smooth, but DIY think rosin solution is more like powder suspended in thick solution. It has grains of rosin powders, looks pale, and feels coarse. The "paste" in this video just look like that. You can try that. However I do not recommend DIY flux/paste since commercial ones are much much better.
@@sullivanzheng9586 Rosin absolutely does dissolve fully in alcohol, into a smooth liquid or syrup. It can take a long time to dissolve, but it will dissolve completely, no chunks.
what if i want to dilute a commercial paste that is too thick and sticky to a more liquid like form ,,can i mix it with alcohol ?

I made the paste myself with only rosin and alcohol. And is indeed milky white like that, not darker as you said.

The only problem is that after 20 minutes of the rosin melted all the way in the alcohol, the rosin solidify itself in the alcohol. Its like a block of iceberg. And when i used the liquid which i thought would have rosin in it, solder didnt stick. In the video, it looks good but the guy didnt tell you the aftermath. By the way, i used the alcohol that you would use to clean your hand during covid. So now what i do is i melt the rosin with alcohol, once melted, i add vaseline to keep the melted rosin from solidifying itself in the melted vaseline.
I find that using melted candle + the melted rosin does the same trick, it keeps the melted rosin from turning solid again.
Thank you for your good tips about Vaseline or Candle wax. I will try it.
Yes, i tried and found Same problem, it solidified in the bottle becomes stones pelt like stay down at bottom and isopropyl alcohol separates, thinking liquid is flux, but it's not liquid flux , just a alcohol.

@@prashantk3269 I stop making flux completely. I just make sure that I buy soldering with flux. Don't buy the one from the 25 cents store, it's not good, tried it. And buy a good soldering gun, it makes a huge difference in quickly melting the solder compared to a cheap gun.

This video clip of yours doesn't mention how to make paste flux but at the end you show off like you did it!? Did you buy it at the market? When the alcohol evaporates, the resin will return to solid form, not mushy.

You need to look at soldering different. You aren't heating the solder to push it onto the wires you are heating the wires to pull in solder. And the only way that happens is when there is 1: enough heat, 2: no oxidation of the materials. Flux helps to increase the surface area and the conductivity of heat onto the material while also removing the oxidation layer in the process. Flux is your best friend.

I use 95% ethanol
@@apourmaker6055 I would say that if that is so, using something like cheap version of everclear (a drinking alcohol that is 190 proof or 95% alcohol) by the name of Clear Springs, is best as it is meant to be drank so no dangerous contaminants and being cheap means they don't add any buffers like oils and such to smooth the drinking experience, its literally just 95% alcohol and 5% water, so far better for using on flux than drinking LOL. (it is not bad as a starter for extraction of flavors too, as it boils off when cooking leaving the flavor like vanilla bean extracts behind, but drinking it straight just strips ones throat leaving you coughing for hours and miserable the next day when the anesthetic effect has worn off)
flux though has a ton of nasty stuff in the smoke no matter what, so a good vent with decent air flow pull I would say is more important and just don't breath any of it,

Easy to find alcohol but I don't know where to find a Rosin?
Ebay is the go to place for me when it comes to stuff like that. Small/cheap items basically are best bought on Ebay in my opinion, but larger/more expensive items on Amazon or something.

much thanks for sharing this, there are rosin trees here, *you can tell by smelling the sap as it smells exactly like rosin flux for soldering XD* I will definitely have to collect some and test it with pure alcohol and see how it works. XD
just checked and my attempt with xylene worked a treat, if anyone else needs a solution to converting existing rosin paste into liquid, or just reactivate some really old hard paste, :) (the rosin paste I am using is like 30 years old LOL)

TECH HUB Isopropyl works well, so does ethanol. But without activators, it’ll never be as good as commercial flux. (I’ve tried making my own, and it’s just not good enough.)

It looks fake because I tried it before. The whity color is not expected. With resin it become more yellow- Orang and also more fluidy. But yours is not. If you add more resin you can get more solid paste but the color become orange then. So it is highly fake.
