    This is no joke *if using leaded solder* .
    Leaded solder is very safe under normal use but not if you aerosol it like this. You'll certainly breathe it in or swallow it over time. Even tiny amounts are dangerous this way.
    Shave the solder bar in a bucket under some liquid, let the liquid evaporate and then mix with flux.
    If using unleaded do as shown here with no problems.

      There's a reason he didn't.... The amount of force needed to push such a thick paste threw that needle is going to make this unusable. Odds are the twist lock needle blows off before the mix exits the needle. This is not even mentioning how this will act to solder items when contaminated with filings from the sand paper are now mixed in with this.... I personally would not recommend this for any job where you NEED SMD solder.

      @@2112user Yeah. that was my first thought....jamming the needle - but for a home hobbyist I'm sure it will do the job. The solder isn't in 'ball shape' and the ratio probably isn't right, but I'm sure it'll work.

      Didn't show it because it's probably crap, no balance, oh just little bit of this and a little bit of that, should have put some scrapings off his wife or girl friends pants that makes it go faster :-) ooooh sick mind I have but it takes all sorts :-)

    I had thought about this same idea but never tried it. I wondered how good it would be. What would its shelf life be? Too bad you did not show a demonstration of using this home-made soldering paste.
    Thank you for this video, I am now more intrigued to try it myself.

    • @ThomasAndersonbsf
      @ThomasAndersonbsf 2 роки тому

      that was my first thought at the end, was "why not show it in action" and I am guessing it's because it does not work very well, I tried this with something that solders very easy, with just rosin flux, Bismuth, but when you break down metal like this it gets oxidized and that contaminates the whole process bad, This would probably have to be done with an ultrasonic device, under flux based on rosin and alcohol so you get fluid movement initially, and add some sharp hard steel or other magnetic material chips so you can extract them afterwards leaving just chipped up metal in flux that was done under an inert environment of the alcohol and rosin dissolved in it, then you can let the alcohol evaporate to the thickness you want, so it will still dispense, something else I doubt works for this, using that needle on the tip, but with the tip removed so its just plastic hole larger than the needle's then maybe, it will flow out when plunged
      I did the alcohol trick but using xylene over aluminum chips to powder it while keeping it oxygen free and it boosts rocket powder drastically but you have to keep it wetted down by oil once you add it to something because the powdered aluminum from ultrasonic bashing it in xylene once dry will explode it is so flammable leaving nothing but alumina (powdered sapphire or aluminum based glass powder)

    Cool idea. However lately I have been watching some videos from people who claim it is better to do drag soldering and not use paste at all. Goes a bit faster maybe. I have just put a soldering station on my wishlist. When I order it I can try this for myself!

    A idéia é boa, porém acho que uma lima rotativa teria um resultado melhor, pois com a lixa fica resíduos dela na pasta e com a lima você poderia tirar o resíduo com um imã, caso existisse. Abraço.

    Buenos días, puede funcionar pero pienso que las partículas de abrasivo del tambor de lijado del Dremel tienen que contaminar el producto del lijado y por ende la pasta, voy a tratar de usar una lima para evitar ese problema.
    Me imagino que el flux líquido es a base de resina vegetal, la uso bastante y tengo un flux en pasta bastante viejo pero que es excelente.

  • @OddlyIncredible
    @OddlyIncredible 6 років тому +12

    I'm all for shoestring/make-do approaches, but if you had to purchase a tube of flux anyway, why not just purchase a tube of solder paste? In the quantities hobbyists use, even fancy professional-grade silver pastes aren't prohibitively expensive. Failing to see where there are upsides to this approach, especially considering how much worse it has to be to work with compared to a commercially-prepared paste. (Inconsistent solder bead size and contaminants like grit from the grinding wheel are two potential concerns that spring to mind.)

      As I watched the same thing came to mind. The contaminants from the dremel sanding drum and the oils off the fingers will absolutely degrade the quality of the paste and will make a less than suitable solder joint.

      Ok, don't worry, you can do it at home if you have some muriatic acid (HCl, HydroChloric acid). But it doesn't worth it I tell you. You can clip some tiny solder pieces that fit the part you want to solder and use a tiny heat gun on it, mask the part with cardboard that you don't want to burn.

      i bet if you add up the cost of everything including the overuse of the Dremel and how often you have to change out sanding bits that will get clogged, not to mention the time wasted on grinding for 800x speed for a ~1:20 with 2 cut scenes ( i know that it probably wasn't that long but my hands get numb after grinding like that for more than 5 minuets)
      now buying maker paste or any of the other brands (even the cheapest) you will get better quality and time/cost efficiency

    @shinkuan1212 4 роки тому +1

    Ok but why?

    • @minkorrh
      @minkorrh 4 роки тому

      In the factory, on PCB boards with surface mounted devices (SMD) (as opposed to 'through hole'), the correct technique is to apply a thin layer of solder paste through a mask with holes that are only in the positions of the components (like silkscreening) . Then a robotic machine picks and places all the components in the correct positions, and the board is baked at a specific temp until the solderpaste melts and solders everything to the board automatically. You can approximate this technique at home with a hot air gun, toaster oven, etc., and waiting a month or 1.5 months for solder paste to come from China can be irritating. Sorry for the long answer but you asked 'why'.
