Such a touching story, if being asked about your sexuality unexpected feels very very threatening in a indescribable way I can't imagine how it can feel when your job depends on your answer and hear you're "causing problems" and making your colleagues uncomfortable. So so glad you got that talk and support from your boss, i could see the relief in your voice, it's incredible how something that can be so simple can leave such a positive mark on your life ♥ can't express my big love for this channel and the amazing stories and people we get to hear and know (sorry for my English, I'm from latinoamerica so English isn't my main language at all xD)

Sexuality not sexually. I think it boils down to them being afraid that someone of the same sex might find them attractive which would mean in their pea sized brain that when others find out, usually because the person tells them by complaining about it hoping to be validated in their disgust, will call them gay.

This takes me right back to the 80's when I worked for a retail chain here in the UK. There weren't any employment protection laws then and once it became known I'm Gay it was like 'the gloves are off', it was open season on 'the queer'. I endured 5 years of almost daily abuse, subtle though it was, and was reminded that the only way it would cease was for me to leave. It left me having a break down and didn't work for almost 2 years. It sickens me that a so-called civilised nation such as the US, a nation which is quick to point the finger when it comes to other countries' human/civil rights abuses, can't seem to have a universal legislation protecting LGBT employees! It just astounds me. It's great that Ingrid found an ally in her boss but it could've gone so horribly wrong for her.

I realize this was 20 years ago but still! I just don't understand what there even is to be "uncomfortable" about? Is this person hitting on you at work or being inappropriate somehow? No? I would have been enchanted by you when I was growing up because your voice sounds so kind and your speech so clear! You have a beautiful speaking voice! My mother’s pastor at church sent me a letter telling me that he heard that I might be gay and asked if it was true. When I answered yes, he sent a return letter within a couple of days, telling me that I would be disfellowshipped from the church at a meeting that night! I didn’t go to that church anymore so it didn’t matter to me. I’m glad that you had better results than I did when they found you out.

I like how the boss had her back. Some things are none of people's buainess in the workplace anyway. But what bothered me was the boss's attitude about her coffee (or was it tea?). Dude! If I was her server, I'd be thinking about helping her WEAR that hot beverage! I wouldn't do it, but I'd think it! And as a new employee of hers, I'd seriously be keeping my resume out there. Those little things say alot about people's character. People who provide service for others, whatever service that is, deserve respect. Just because you're the paying customer doesn't mean you need to be a bitch to get a mistake corrected. Simply let that person know that it wasn't hot enough please make it hotter. Now, most servers would gladly correct that error. I value any service provider more on how they handle any errors more than on perfection. Because errors WILL happen. It's when they don't correct it or compensate for it or give a customer a hard time about it that I get fired up on them. That boss was rude and it showed alot about how she would likely deal with her employees.

I’m glad that worked out. So often it doesn’t. I worked at Catholic Community Services of Utah for 11 years until I was thrown out like trash. They said it was “reduction of staff,” but the last several months were filled with gossip and accusations against me they didn’t know I knew about and had corroborated from multiple sources. There was more to it than they care to say, and said so when they let me go after I asked them. “We can’t tell you.” Being Catholic, I understood bearing false witness against others is a mortal sin. The business bearing the name of my religion used that mortal sin as a means to expedite the removal of employees they aren’t supposed to admit they don’t like. What has this done to me at this point in time? Well, they put my life in serious danger and refuse to give me any more information to take to the police to possibly save myself from violent death. There is nothing I can do.

I really thought this story was going to turn out bad. We'll always face prejudices wherever we go. Luckily for this lady it turned out to be a positive one. I'm sure there are millions that are the exact opposite.

the story of your boss reminded me of the story of one of my supervisors in the fire dpt. i came out to him as gay at his 19th year anniversary party i was told i was being transferred to a different shift... i did came out to a few that night but my supervisor was the last i told. he was surprised but totally awesome and let me know i was always a pleasure to work with and if when ever im ready to come back he'll pull the necessary strings to get me back. even when he got transferred to another shift months later his offer to bring me on whatever shift hes on still stands and it made me happy to know that theres prople in my life not only accepts me for who i am but actually wants me regardless and look at as an actually person and what i bring to the table... not as a weird guy or who i may or may not sleep with

Dear Ingrid, your story inspired me a lot. Thank you. I am so glad that your boss is so understanding and everything turned out to be good in the end! Such moments shape our personality and behaviour. And a little bit your experienced influenced my personality and mindset too. I am only 19 years old, in a year I will finish studying and will be trying to find a job. I am also bisexual. And till today I was afraid only about the reactions of my family, friends and future partner after they hear about my sexuality. You know, problems at work caused by my sexuality have never crossed my mind, though I live in Poland, where many people are still very conservative and same-sex marriages are not legalised yet. Your story made me think about all of this. Will I be able to be open about who I am, if my job will depend on this? Or SHOULD I be open about this, even if that means I will be fired and will change a couple of work places? You know, the easiest thing is to get scared and opt for the safest solution. Just stay silent and work in a peaceful place. But is it really that peaceful? I understood that without our own affort nothing will change. Ever. If we want to hide for the rest of our lives, keep our sexuality a secret from some relatives, co-workers, etc. so they don't abandon us, then it's fine, we may keep being silent. But I don't want such a life for myself. And you know, I still don't know how I would react, would I keep it a secret just to get a job, or act dauntlessly. I don't know. May be I won't be dauntless at the beginning of my journey, as my whole life will depend on my salary. But I am certain that those of us who can afford being their true selves, they should go for this without fear. Yeah, it is though and easier said than done. But we deserve living and working without being scared. We are all equal. And the more we show this world that we exist and we have rights just as heterosexuals do, the sooner we will get our freedom. I believe and this and so should you. Love you all guys, no matter who you are and who you are attracted to. Love is the most beautiful and pure feeling, and nobody should be judged for it. I hope you will experience only love, understanding and acceptance from everyone you meet and what is the most important from yourselves too.

When Yankee is actually two Dutch names pasted together, Jan and Kees. Me as a Dutch person thinking, what's wrong with Jan and what's wrong with Kees? Great story tough, as a Dutch person, I cannot comprehend this bias towards gay people. In the Netherlands, our Queen back then, signed a bill to approve same sex marriage, making the Netherlands the first country in the world where same sex marriage became legal.

Being from Georgia, sometimes I do say "Ohh you're a yankee?" but it's playful. I don't mean anything by it. Southerners tend to be sarcastic and pick on you a little bit. It's all in good fun. But if it really offends you just let us know :)

I am southern, though not Georgia southern, and Yankee to me generally means that you're a little more rude than someone raised in the area. It's the idea that if you were born up north, then the conditions are a little more brusque and business-like than things tend to be in the south. You know it takes us 12 minutes just to say hello. I, personally, have found my southern ways to be a hindrance in the American business world, but a bonus when living and working in other countries that do not rush into business conversations. As far as whatever other connotations are put on Yankee and are implied here, I really have no clue.

Hey. We northerners do the same. I worked at a hospital many years back. I was an Eagles fan and the patient I was taking to the OR was a Texan and loved the Cow Girls. Mind you, it was 2008, or whichever year the Eagles were in the Super Bowl...so of course the entire OR staff was wearing their jerseys...lucky them lol. Anyway, this patient and I had so much fun busting on eachother. And I said to him "wait...you're a Cow Boys fan putting your life into the hands of a bunch of Eagles fans?" He said, "yes ma'am". I said, "are you sure it isn't your head that needs to be operated on?" He just LOST it! 😂
