      I’m 44 and don’t particularly like it. Maybe it depends on one’s life experiences. As a teacher, I see the difference between what I consider to be a kid and a young adult.
      To be clear, I don’t have a melt down or get bent out of shape when I hear someone who is of age referred to as a kid. I understand that ppl say this and don’t have ill intentions. But personally, I choose to make the distinction.
      I compare that to girl v woman or boy v man. I would never refer to a 22 year old as a girl. I don’t put her in the same category as say a 7 year old. 🤷🏾‍♀️

      And while the whole blackface thing is wrong, it's obvious in this case it is just a cultural difference where no one really cares about it in Belgium and The Netherlands because of the tradition. To us this kinda comes over as if you want us to change without always knowing how it started. Now 'Zwarte' Piet is called 'Roet' = (Ash) Piet or just basic 'Piet'.

      Lotte You and Jon are absolutely right that it’s not a Christmas tradition. That said as Sinterklaas is a mythological figure, his canon can develop and should. I genuinely not suggesting we tank all of Sinterklaas’s retinue just question if Zwarte Piet is needed and if so can be rewritten a bit. People trying to suggest he a sooty from chimneys or now is the actual gift giver are already doing that. One person just needs to be brave enough to edit his design for good and he may even be able to stay.

      @Widdekuu91 4 роки тому +1

      @@Firegen1
      "Just question is Zwarte Piet is needed...."
      Mate, Sinterklaas is a demented old bloke. Zwarte Piet has been saving the kids and the presents in movies and series since I was young.
      While Nickelodeon showed me pre-Christma-stuff with overworked little people, slaving away in a mass-production-centre, with no windows, I was watching Clever Pete and Testing-Pete and Professor Pete and all the others solving crimes, drinking lemonade, relaxing on the couch, being given holidays to France to work on their artwork (Kunst-Pete that is, you can google him if you want.)
      I mean, what do you want changed about his design?
      Amsterdam changed him into a Kolonial gentleman, that didn't go down well with the anti-pete-groups.
      And then they changed them into white people and our city got swamped with black people, trying to apply for Black Pete in our tiiiiny city, because 'we're not going to paint our fucking faces white.'
      I mean, there is no solution, there's always going to be peopl that are unhappy.
      And if you want to make *most* people happy, you clarify the difference between the national mythical superhero and common people that have skin that isn't covered in soot.

    • @TheWinglessHawk
      @TheWinglessHawk 4 роки тому

      One philosophical question: Would it be better instead of White People "blackfacing" to honor one member of the "colored" society? Think about it that way, when netherlands people see a "black person" they think about something good - Christmas. While in america it is thought, that white people never associate good things from black people because HISTORY! Both countries had a history, but those two countries took other conclusions away from it. And THAT is important! You don't want to put people into sterotypes because it is racist, BUT to think everything overall is only one conclusion instead of two... you are doing the same. Doing sterotypes and ironically being racist towards another cultural group you might not completely understand, if you don't get to know them better and open your heart and mind. PS: No, I am not from netherlands. I just think it is interesting how everyone can have tunnel vision and do exactly that which they don't want to do in the first place... Humanity can still learn and grow from their mistakes... but I fear it is already too late for that.

    For people who don't understand, Ziwarte Piet is actually VERY racist. Maybe just painting him black would be different, but the character features an afro, with black skin and huge red lips. Which makes absolutely no sense if your story is "He looks black because he went down the chimney and got soot all over him". Just Google 'Zwarte Piet' and you won't be able to get around the fact that it is blatant blackface and a very racist caricature of black people.
    Luckily a lot of places in the Netherlands have decided to change 'Black Peter' to just 'Peter' (or Pete) with some soot on its face, but Sinterklaas won't be a truly inclusive celebration until blackface has been completely erased from it.

      @@amberfillmore3517 The part is nowadays supposed to be a helper who is black only because they came through the chimney. That would barely be an acceptable excuse for blackface as it is, but the fact that the Zwarte Piet character also includes an afro wig, red lipstick and golden hoop earrings makes the 'he's black because of the chimney!' story quite unbelievable. Plus the character is portrayed as a friendly, but silly, clueless helper that needs the quidance of the wise old Sinterklaas. So the idea is to change the character to 'Piet', which keeps its funny ways, but without the wig, lipstick and earrings and with soot smudges on its face instead of covering the whole face in black paint. This way the character actually fits the story that is told to children. Unfortunately a large part of the Netherlands can't accept this and wants to keep the Piet character black, for whatever reason.

      @@amberfillmore3517 The celebration is not inclusive for children and people of colour, because of the way they're portrayed. Now blackface has a difficult past as it is, but specifically to Zwarte Piet:
      - Decades ago the character was portrayed as scary and children were told they'd have to be good or otherwise Zwarte Piet would take them away.
      - Later on the character became more friendly, but increasingly sillier, sometimes even with a Suriname (former Dutch colony) accent.

      This comedy skit is very generalising to be honest. The Netherlands are torn around Sinterklaas because one big part of the country hates Black Pete and the other part wants to hold onto tradition. Its not like everyone is fine with it here. Most folk living in bigger cities are mostly or fully against Black Pete or can see that the tradition is old and not okay anymore but a lot of smaller places still hold onto it because... cultures just differ from place to place as much as it does in America or anywhere else. Official news outlets have already gotten rid of the entirely blackface Black Pete in favor of people just being painted with smudges as soot would ACTUALLY look on someones face. Theres a Sinterklaas Journaal (which is HUGE, all children watch it), which is a news channel only broadcasted around Sinterklaas season and theyve entirely gotten rid of Black Pete too. Its only ignorant communities that are still holding onto this tradition.
      So yes, the Dutch can see black face is degrading, the entire country has been adjusting ever since Black Pete became a big vocal point here.

      Black Pete is a very positive character and has no negative connotations so that’s why very little people see a problem with it.
      A study among dutch kids showed they associate black Pete with clowns and not with black people. It’s complicated

  • @gaiavandenbroek9705

    As a Dutch person I'm so ashamed this is still going on. It took me a while to realise how racist this tradition is because I grew up with this and as a kid you don't go 'oh those are a bunch of people doing blackface'. You just see a joyful celebration and "zwarte piet" giving sweets. As an adult I realised how fucked up this is and it definitely needs to change. This discussion has been going on in Holland for a couple of years and there is a big divide with people who don't want to face their beloved tradition is racist (and/or blatantly deny it) and people who have realised we can still enjoy our tradition without insulting and hurting people by just stop doing fucking blackface. There is slow and small transition going on by replacing blackface with soot marks (because zwarte piet goes through the chimney and """"that is why he's is black""""... it is factually based on a santa claus who had slaves) but there's still a lot of resistance because of ignorance.

    I wish a bit more information was included on the Sinterklaas thing. It's actually a huge discussion here trying to get rid of Zwarte Piet. Luckily the majority of us see how offensive it is to people of colour and have no issue simply adjusting Zwarte Piet to something else. It's supposed to be a fun holiday for kids, and the kids really dont care what Piet looks like as long as they get their presents. We've still got a long way to go but I'm hopeful with all the cities that have already banned Zwarte Piet that soon it's permanently changed for the better. I know there's a lot of people stuck up about this issue because 'tradition', but hearing this honestly made me feel so embarrassed, and I just wanted to say it's really not the case that all of us are dismissing this issue.
