  • There are many ways to approach a problem/technique, and there is no difference when trying to color grade footage in Resolve. Today we going to look at a feature that allows us to grade the footage separate from the timeline itself, without needing to disable all the clips above it (thanks to the unmix option)

Dave - have been doing these kinds of color grades for years ( multicam ). I think that you may have learned a way to jump around that seems simple to you because that's how you learned it - but not the way I would approach this once you "Open it Timeline".
I would then go to the color page and I would turn on the clips ( not the timeline ) the clips would spread across in order under the source monitors.
The turning on and off of the timeline is an unnecessary step, if you use the clips and not that tiny timeline. Using the clips you also get a visual of what's been graded and what hasn't yet been graded. And at anytime you can then click the LightBox icon and see the clips to see the grade from shot to shot, on a larger scale to see continuity.
I also see in the DR forums that people are not sure how to get back to the multicam.
You did show them the breadcrumb links at the bottom left, but not sure if you told them they can go from the stacked multicam back to the regular multicam by clicking on that link in the bottom corner.
Multicam is something that I seem to have to use all the time. But it is curious that there are not that many actual tutorials on it. So good choice on picking this topic.

Appreciate it! Yeah, to your point about the timeline vs clips on the color page, I guess it really is a preference. And to be absolutely fair, clips may make more sense as you can see the clips. Having said that, you do still have to remember to hit "unmix, or you're stuck with the problem I mentioned of seeing the "top" clip for any clip that it covers.
Always appreciate the comments, and thanks for watching, Jim!

I agree that having the clips up is helpful but he's right, if you didn't hit unmix you still have to disable tracks in order to see anything but the top track or little bits where they don't overlap at the start or end. I did an edit this way with 3 angles and it was quite a pain.

EXCELLENT explanation on editing a multi cam
Clip! 1st video I have seen that actually was effective in explaining the why and how to use reasons! Kudos!

exactly what I needed. I was sure Resolve had a solution for this dilemma where color grading and matching different cameras in the multicam clip the top footage covers everything else. The unmix button suggestion is so helpful, thanks a lot!

Really helpful, very important you pointed out the drawbacks of editing them once your cuts are in place, something I thought about but didn't realize may be an issue if a cut needs to be added later.

Hey, thank you for this video! One question, in the color page, using unmix function, is there a way for the playhead to stay at the same place once you select different clip in timeline and not jump to the beginning of the clip?

Thanks for this tip on the Unmix function. There are still a couple of issues with this workflow though. One is that by color grading before you do any editing, the system slows down massively when you're doing angle edits. If this is affecting performance, would you render them in place first just as a stopgap? The second issue is that
the clips view only shows the start of the file so it's hard to really get an idea how well balanced the shots look. I suppose Ill try it this way for my next project and see if I like it.
Most other tutorials tell you to group the clips by each angle and then use a group pre clip grade. But each time you make an edit or change an angle you have to go reassign the group for your edit or angle change. This was pretty frustrating in my last edit because I grouped the 5 angles when I had 90 clips, but ended up with 140 clips by the end of the edit. That was a lot of reassigning. I wonder if you know of any automatic function to set up a color group by camera angle or other metadata.
Another thing that stinks about using the group pre clips is that while you watch the multicam source viewer it applies the grade of the current clip to all the preview angles. That is super distracting.

Newbie here. When in the color workspace, when I click each clip on the timeline, the cursor moves to the first frame of that clip. The lights in the room were off at that point. Is there a way to disable that, so the playback cursor doesn't move as I click different clips on the timeline?

This works somewhat for me. In the second part of my multicam the SD card filled and swapped to another SD card. Even though that second SD card is cut in the multicam it doesn't show in the timeline view (it does when I hold it down and scroll but it doesnt allow me to edit it). Unfortunate bug.

When I open the different clips in timeline, after I grade the colours It doesnt goes back to the multicam timeline, instead it remains separated. How can I turn the multicam timeline back? In your video seems to be automatic

This focusses on Color grading. Can I use the same technique to use a mask on one camera view to change exposure for that camera Say for example just a face is too dark on one camera.

    EDIT PAGE: Open in timeline
COLOR PAGE: Three dots/Split screen/Selected Clips, then select the clips that compose the multicam, then compare the look of them and adjust accordingly

It's part of the lesson files that were over on the training page on the Blackmagic Training web site. It part of the The Beginner’s Guide to DaVinci Resolve 16 section. I am not sure if UA-cam will allow me to link it here (it may get flagged) but you can find that page by a quick search. Having said that, I think they've since updated it to Resolve 17. I am sure the files still exist somewhere out there, however.

Sadly, most of this doesn't work with remote grades. The only option there is to actually go into every multicam clip and adjust each camera separately. Doing that for 50+ scenes gets very repetitive and I honestly wish there was a way to have color adjustments get handed down to the clip inside a multicam.
