  • In this video, I go over how I built an input buffer and an output/effects loop insert into my Pedaltrain pedalboard. If you want to recreate this build, the parts list is included below. Note that the buffer circuit was completed per the instructions for the kit. The footswitch, LED, and battery connector were deleted from the build.
    Parts List:
    Hammond 1590ABK Enclosure: a.co/72GQU8n
    Neutrik 1/4" Switching Jack: a.co/cRgfPAp
GLS Audio Open Frame 1/4" Jack: a.co/ce2DFV6
    2.1mm DC Power Jack: a.co/9q5Nt8z
General Guitar Gadgets IC Buffer Kit: store.generalguitargadgets.co...
Sheet metal screws can be sourced from any hardware store. I used #8 x 1/2".
Here's a link to a great wiring diagram on Stinkfoot that should help you better understand the wiring for the switching jacks.

Hey, Chad, Thank you for this video and I’m just a little concerned for your well being! It’s been two years since you’ve said more videos would come, are you okay?
Hope all is well and thank you for this video.

Thanks for the great informative video! Here's a note from my recent experience building these: I found that using the non-isolated jacks resulted in a ground loop because the power supply (Truetone CS7) was mounted using the metal brackets also grounded to its chassis, which then grounded to the Pedaltrain frame via the metal screws. The loop occurred because the interface box with the non-isolated jack also grounded to its own chassis and to the frame via the metal screw. Thus there were two points to ground. The solution was simply to build the interface as described but with all isolated Cliff jacks. Hope that helps anyone who has run into a similar issue. Thanks again!

Instead of Cliff jacks you could use Switchcraft jack with isolation washers. Tubes and More sells them. Or CE Distribution if you have a wholesale account with them.

Cool video! Would love a little more information on the buffer, how well it works & the effects loop. Also, I can't really tell what that 2nd interior input is on the output box. Is that the output to that goes to the amplifier input? If so, it's rather inconvenient for it to be located on the interior of the board, isn't it?

Very useful video, thanks! Just one comment on your last drilling stage: there’s absolutely no need to drill the pedalboard holes, using the actual enclosure as a guide risking to damage delicate components. It’s a lot easier to just mark the holes on the pedalboard with a punch or any thin and sharp object - the painted surface of the board will be very easy to mark. Then remove the enclosures and drill :)

You can also use the enclosure as a template before you put the components in.

It would had more useful to show us how exactly those side holes were drilled. There is a certain skill set in regards to precise spacing, centering and drilling.

I just did this on my homemade pedal board and posted on a FB page, then I recommended it to another person on a different FB page and both times I had people telling me how stupid this was, how pointless it was, and how I was creating noise and impedance issues I was going to regret. I've never had a problem. What is wrong with people???

Well i can not understand. In the diagram there's Input (signal from guitar i guess ?) Then Amp imput ( no explanation needed) But how about fx send / return ?

    • @3rdcoastchad397
      @3rdcoastchad397  5 років тому +1

The jacks allow for mechanical switching. There are 4 lugs on the jack...2 for tip and 2 for sleeve. When you plug a cable into the jack, the linkage between the lugs is broken and signal does not pass to the next jack in line. I believe you're referring to the wiring for the "outbound" side box and I explained what was happening with the connections between the jacks in the video. On that wiring diagram, everything in your "pre" chain (overdrives, distortion, etc) is connected to the "in" jack on that diagram, then loops back around to the "post" jack, which would route to the effects you would want in your effects loop (time-based effects and modulation). As long as nothing is plugged into the amp input and fx send jacks on that box, signal is routed straight through to the last pedal in line, allowing you to connect your entire signal chain to the front end of an amp. If you wish to route through the effects loop of your amp, that's where those jacks would be used. Connecting cables there breaks the link and allows independent routing of your pre and post effects chain. The purpose for this box is to facilitate some flexibility in signal routing without having to keep certain pedals along the perimeter of the pedalboard. Hopefully this explanation helps.

@@3rdcoastchad397 But where should be connected the cable to the amp's "fx return"? Directly to the last pedal's output?
