Yea exactly, and why start him in the first place if 2 out of your front 3 can’t run in behind. Even Saka is better with ball to feet and spinning defenders. Gordon needs to come in and Foden moved inside. Not taking a left footed left back is killing us too. Trippier offers nothing in possession and neither him or Foden can provide width.

Liverpool fan here - The "Trent in midfield" debate I do agree with, it's not working as anticipated with England, however the narrative is minimalized, I'll explain: I've seen Trent play a more advanced midfield-like role for Liverpool for a full season in the season just gone, so he can do the job, we know he can, we've seen it... The problem is when he gets on the ball he's constantly looking for that long ball over the top of the defence, which relies on the forward players making that run in behind the defensive line constantly, as soon as Trent gets on the ball for Liverpool Salah & Luis Diaz instinctively know to immediately make that run in behind, whereas for England Trent will get on the ball, he'll look up, but Kane/ Saka/ Foden/ Bellingham don't make that run in behind, it's as though Southgate is telling them not to run in behind, so Trent's only option is to play the ball sideways or backwards... So the problem isn't Trent, the problem is Southgate not knowing what to do with him or having a positive attacking system that gets the best out of him, it's like Southgate has a Ferrari he isn't taking out of 1st gear, same with a lot of these really talented players to be fair...
spot on, nobody is running forward so Trent has more time on the ball and gets closed down quickly, loses the ball and ends up getting the blame. Watkins made one run in behind and had a shot on goal, it's not rocket science but Southgate just can't seem to see it.
You'd think an England manager (and his staff) that knows his stuff would have scoped this out beforehand. It's like the left and right hand have no idea what they're doing.
Whilst I somewhat agree with this and I do think Trent can pick a killer pass in midfield, he simply lacks the intelligence, positioning & experience of an actual midfielder - there is a big difference starting in midfield week in week out and moving into midfield from right back when the opposition is already pinned back

Thing is the issue of England back then was club rivalry was pretty much an all time high and the players couldn't get past that to come together and play for the nation and the managers didn't know how to put the players ina balanced team together. Rn England is similar situation again. Except the camaraderie is good but the tactics are so inept, good players look average and average players look bad.
@kailashpatel1706 unity and drive was in the team but everyone hated the player and complained about him constantly. Maybe dropping Henderson from the squad was a bad idea if you honestly think the problem is not enough 'unity and drive'. And the context of the video was they were disappointed there wasn't a 'hard man' to shout at people. Give me a break such an old way of doing it, England fans pine for a time that was some of the worst international results in their history.
@adampaul6675 not convinced it was club rivalry that held them back tbh. I've read a few auto biographies from the likes of Gerrard at the time mentioning he thought it would be tribal but when he got there everyone was welcoming and there was no man u, Liverpool, arsenal etc section or click. I do genuinely believe it's managerial. It's always been the case and until England gets a manager that suits an English Premier league style, maybe has more pedigree then being relegated at club level, there won't be success. Ancellotti could be a good solution
England are more like an All-English All-Star exhibition team than a serious competitive team. The english media and fans insisting their team's darlings make the squad every year doesnt help.
People jumping on the Kalvin Phillips quote represents everything that's wrong with social media. Southgate mentioned both Phillips and Henderson, and Phillips was the England player of the tournament when England reached the final in 2020.
Gareth Southgate pointing to his temples and trying to act calm was hilarious to me, bros tactics were horrible, his subs did nothing and he tells them to stay calm 😂
Should’ve taken grealish should’ve taken rashford shouldn’t have played a right back in midfield and shouldn’t have played the best attacking midfielder in the prem on wing. I’ve supported Southgate as think he’s done well in previous tournaments compared to what came before him but feels like he’s lost the plot this time around
When Gareth fill's out his team sheet who is he building the attack around? I can't tell from watching. Is it Trent as a deep lying playmaker, is it Kane holding the ball up centrally for runners in behind, is it Bellingham as a CAM? It does not appear that anyone seems to know what style they are playing. Trent can't make long passes into the box if Kane is dropping to CM. Kane can't hold the ball up if he has no runners other than Saka off the right. Jude can't create if Kane and Foden are crowding the same space. At least in prior tournaments you could see that the attack revolved around Kane getting in the box and looking for crosses from Walker or Shaw or holding the ball up for runs from Sterling or Rashford. It was not pretty, but there was the outline of a system. Gareth does not know how to deploy these players. He brings off Kane and Trent, drops Jude deeper, then brings on players like Watkins and Bowen to make runs that would've suited TAA's passing or Kane's hold up play. Make it make sense.
Anyone who supported Southgate for years because he lucked his way to various semi finals and finals, while having some of the easiest runs is responsible for him still being here and wasting such talent now.
This conversation could have been happening at nearly every tournament from the last 50 years . I’ve been done with England for about a decade, and never felt better. I wouldn’t get worked up over this, it’s happened before, and will again.
I think people who don’t rate Henderson should now realise what a player like him brought to the team between 2018-2021. A leader, defensively and tactically strong and someone who could link the defensive and attack
England, compared to the talent they have, & had, haven't clicked for decades. The English might not want to admit this, but it must be a deeper reason than just the manager, even though I think he is a big reason. Is it the media? Expectations from fans? Culture? Lack of a clear football style/identity? Because England have had this same problem under lots of managers.
Kieran Tripier and Trent Alexander Arnold play like headless chickens and what's funny is that Southgate's coach even brought Luke Shaw, who didn't play for nearly a season at Man United due to injury, instead he brought him
sending eze, bowen and watkins on at the same time were essentially 3 one for one subs and with no tactical change just goes to show that Southgate is clueless and is relying on a .moment' from one of the world class talents on the pitch.
"Are the players that we are bringing in ready for this level?" What is that guy on about. Out of everything wrong with their performance in this tournament thus far, he decides to start with that.
who the F is Adam Wharton and why is he in the England team? I looked him up, he plays for Palace, I don't think I've ever heard his name in my life before this tournament. You are talking about him like he's the answer to all your problems, he plays for Palace, come on now! 19:00 it may be a gift Rory, but remember, England had Gerrard AND Lampard in midfield and they failed too. they had the 2 most gifted midfielders in the premier league and they failed, they couldn't play together. That was England's golden generation, this is not, despite Bellingham being how he is.
There's no cohesion whatsoever between the players. All those team bonding meetings before the tournament and before the game went out the window once they stepped on the pitch. They are one team, they wear the same kit but inside their head they're not the same.
I can only hope he's told them to score one relax and save energy for the bigger games...because we plan to go balls to the wall in the knockouts but I'm not filled with huge confidence
England played the SAME in both games and had the exact same game plan for both games. Southgate has them playing for 1-0 wins when they should be playing for 3-0 smashings with the talent they have. they should be on the front foot just like Spain and Germany have been.
Simple solutions 101 #1. Go southgate first half: Start Gallagher or mainoo for Trent Keep the rest same #2. Go Northgate for second half: put Trent somewhere on the pitch, drop Kane for someone without negative acceleration. Eze or Gordon for foden
I have said this before, every international team has an identity, the way they play, even if it is really physical or balls over the top, we don't have one and thats a problem, you are supposed to create a system then pick the players to fit into it, not pick all your mates and try and squeeze them in.
to be fair he brought watkins on who nearly made an instant impact from running in behind, the issue is he took trent off 10 minutes earlier who is the best at playing that ball, play them both at the same time aswell as gordon and bowen on the wings and trent will run the game
Gordon is carrying a injury and he was injured throughout the season and going into the England friendlies - he missed the England game at Newcastle and played the second friendly but since then hasn’t played a minute when the left side needs pace - Southgate knew before the squad submission deadline Gordon wasn’t fully fit and still didn’t pick Rashford ahead of dunk Lets say that again Southgate picked dunk ahead of Rashford or Grealish
Complete blame on the manager. Selection stank. Tactics stank. Has midfielders/forwards who want ball to feet, come short and don't run in behind, playing counter attack & long ball. Has defenders can progess the ball, playing hoof ball. If you wont change your style to suit the players you have, then dont send the players home that actually can play your system
Is strange to play Trent in midfield whilst instructing Rice to stay defensive. Basically two DMs who arent good at consistently advancing the ball. Especially since Jude is not particularly mobile
The squad is absolutely and unequivocally NOT the issue here. That group of players pitted up against any other group of players at the tournament should realistically be one of the favorites. It is all down to the manager. Abhorrent, Stone Age tactics.
It’s unforgivable for Southgate to copy and paste the failed tactics and system of the first game into the second. Put Foden behind Kane and play runners on either wing. Put Bellyham alongside the clogger Rice. At least the muppets have stopped taking the knee, or whatever the ‘current thing’ is. I almost blew a blood vessel when Southgate responded to a reporters question about Foden by saying that he thought he did good defensive teamwork on the left side. Could imagine a French coach saying this about Zidane??!!
Saying the squad is “a bit lacking” is ridiculous. Kane, Bellingham, Rice, Stones, Walker, Foden, Saka. That’s 7/11 of the starting lineup that can genuinely say are world class. You then have Palmer & Watkins who have 20 goals & 10 assists in the premier league this season. The tier below that of Trent, Bowen, Trippier, Shaw (if he ever gets fit) are VERY high level and Mainoo & Wharton are great young talents. The squad is STACKED! Absolutely no excuse
England and southgates issue is that he’s playing players with contrasting attributes, Trent is pointless in midfield when there’s no one infront of him to run onto his crosses.
To give an outsider prospective on things, it seems England are confused in every single aspect. The fans don’t know what they want, Southgate looks confused, and the players seem confused with the instructions. In my opinion you can’t expect to figure it out mid tournament. That’s what the qualifiers and friendlies are for. England just use them as tryouts instead of already having a squad set to gain chemistry together.
I think whenever we have come up against a big team with Southgate we have lost with the exception of Germany. We are also extremely lucky with the run of games we have had over the last 3 competition as and then we come up against a top team and don’t have the bottle
Liverpool been struggling to utilise a number 6 for the past season, but they expect trent to fill the role for england? Use him in the RB position and let walker come on late and kill the opposition with his pace
Gareth Southgate is the main Issue, it has to stop with him. Unwillingness to drop players or systems that are not working, lack of tactical nous and ability to adapt to how the opposition is playing. Not setting up to our strengths. On Paper, the squad as individual players is good enough to win, but that's not enough if they are not a cohesive team.
Stop blaming Trent. Our best player was a defender - Guehi. The poor performances fall on Southgate, tactically he’s got it all wrong - you know that’s true when you have world class players not even putting in a decent shift.
There is no excuse for southgate here. Look how well Germany play as a team, look how many chances they create. They are not perfect either. They have mittlestadt at lb, their 2nd choice and Kai havertz upfront. On paper we have a better team and we play like prime stoke. The tactic and in game management is appalling and when we play a team like Germany or France we’ll lose YET AGAIN.
Men, demand more from your players. This is the moment of truth, the manager, the manager, always the manager. Apparent “worldclass players” really need to step up.
He made a big call favouring Gordon to Grealish, presumably because of his pressing stats. He hasn't played him for a minute and his side is also not playing with a ton of pressure up top as a whole anyway, so why bother. I'd much rather have had Grealish on for what he contributes offensively. Just one example.
Bringing up Kalvin Phillips shows how tactically inept, glaringly unaware of the talents and horribly out of depth Southgate is.

Rory says you could ask "Is Guehi ready for this"...............he's arguably been the only good thing so far out of both games imo
He was the cause of the throw in that resulted in the goal tripping over his own feet, he also nearly cost us another goal as well, bring in Konsa
@@brettriverboat9920 Cause of the throw in......is that a measure on how good someone is haha
I think Crystal Palace were actually the most represented team in that match. Both CBs in Andersen and Guehi plus Eze.
Says a lot about the team
Need Paul Ince, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Bryan Robson....what did they win for England again?
Fock all.
The point is someone to bring a sense of unity and drive to the team..
3:26 first time I’m hearing Rory swear 😂
The problem is the players are lost, thats on Southgate
England are more like an All-English All-Star exhibition team than a serious competitive team. The english media and fans insisting their team's darlings make the squad every year doesnt help.
Those Darlings weren’t picked though, Henderson Maguire Maddison Grealish Rashford all left out. Southgate is the problem
@@CGSocDemhow is Maddison a darling if he was he would’ve been picked also grealish should’ve been here and maybe even rashford

Darts in the buildup is not why England are struggling, tinpot analysis. The issue is the tactical setup from the manager.
bench trent for mainoo or gordon whichever way you want to play the system. Not complicated
People jumping on the Kalvin Phillips quote represents everything that's wrong with social media. Southgate mentioned both Phillips and Henderson, and Phillips was the England player of the tournament when England reached the final in 2020.
Pickford | Trippier, Guehi, Stones, Walker | Bellingham, Rice | Foden, Palmer, Saka | Kane
Gareth Southgate pointing to his temples and trying to act calm was hilarious to me, bros tactics were horrible, his subs did nothing and he tells them to stay calm 😂
It’s too slow, too ponderous and that comes from the manager. Imagine that team under Pep, he would have been doing his nut on the sidelines.
Yo stevo.... what da hell is "comardatree" 😂

Rory just listed a bunch of players who also never won anything with England as the solution 😂
man i love hugh, so funny ' I wanna see getting frozen in a cryochamber'
Steve0 take on Palmer is spot on 100 ball knowledge from him ❤
This conversation could have been happening at nearly every tournament from the last 50 years .
I’ve been done with England for about a decade, and never felt better. I wouldn’t get worked up over this, it’s happened before, and will again.
I think people who don’t rate Henderson should now realise what a player like him brought to the team between 2018-2021. A leader, defensively and tactically strong and someone who could link the defensive and attack
did they say Italy underrated?? they literally didn't play football/turn up
The lack of brain cells in this episode is astonishing 😂
England, compared to the talent they have, & had, haven't clicked for decades. The English might not want to admit this, but it must be a deeper reason than just the manager, even though I think he is a big reason. Is it the media? Expectations from fans? Culture? Lack of a clear football style/identity? Because England have had this same problem under lots of managers.
Spot on comment - it is in our DNA. I am always scratching my head as to why England are favourites when the tournaments always go the same way.
Southgate can’t help that rice can’t pass a ball forwards😂
The Answer is simple, do an Ivory Coast and sack the coach and just go wild and win it
who the F is Adam Wharton and why is he in the England team?
I did say before the tournament I’d bet my testicles England won’t go past Quarter finals at best.
Sitting back after going 1-0 up is the worst game plan I’ve ever seen. That’s what we keep doing, my eyes aren’t lying to me.
Bellingham and Rice midfield two.
Gordon left.
Foden cam.
Palmer right.
Kane middle.
Easy. Everyone in their correct positions.
palmer over saka. are you blind or something
Palmer starting? 😂
@@Abe2u Why not he's class. He was the player that dragged Chelsea up. The main man of the team.
@@PHTV11he’s not even better than Saka
Not Bellingham
England played the SAME in both games and had the exact same game plan for both games. Southgate has them playing for 1-0 wins when they should be playing for 3-0 smashings with the talent they have. they should be on the front foot just like Spain and Germany have been.
Simple solutions 101
#1. Go southgate first half: Start Gallagher or mainoo for Trent Keep the rest same
#2. Go Northgate for second half: put Trent somewhere on the pitch, drop Kane for someone without negative acceleration. Eze or Gordon for foden
Rory is rattled but I hear it. Agree with everything he said.
Problem is with Southgate playing defensive football rather than attacking and not just defend after one goal
Pickford, Trippier, Guehi,Stones, walker, Bellingham, Rice,Gordon, Foden,Saka,Kane- I would love to see this team start
Nevermind joined by Hugh Wizzy. Get him a full time part of the club
Gordon is carrying a injury and he was injured throughout the season and going into the England friendlies - he missed the England game at Newcastle and played the second friendly but since then hasn’t played a minute when the left side needs pace - Southgate knew before the squad submission deadline Gordon wasn’t fully fit and still didn’t pick Rashford ahead of dunk
Lets say that again
Southgate picked dunk ahead of Rashford or Grealish
Complete blame on the manager. Selection stank. Tactics stank. Has midfielders/forwards who want ball to feet, come short and don't run in behind, playing counter attack & long ball. Has defenders can progess the ball, playing hoof ball. If you wont change your style to suit the players you have, then dont send the players home that actually can play your system
I think it is more Southgate and his tactics - but there is also something to be said about the mentality and true quality of the players available.
Southgate is so wasted on this squad. It's like giving a Michelin star restaurant to a McDonald's cook
Is strange to play Trent in midfield whilst instructing Rice to stay defensive. Basically two DMs who arent good at consistently advancing the ball. Especially since Jude is not particularly mobile
Missing a Jordan Henderson or James Ward-Prowse
The squad is absolutely and unequivocally NOT the issue here. That group of players pitted up against any other group of players at the tournament should realistically be one of the favorites. It is all down to the manager. Abhorrent, Stone Age tactics.
That's why Musiala chose Germany, he knew that England is a faled team that doesn't win shit.😅
Should have sacked him at halftime.
In this two games England had midfield worth 400 million at least and they kept playing long like a championship side...
I think whenever we have come up against a big team with Southgate we have lost with the exception of Germany. We are also extremely lucky with the run of games we have had over the last 3 competition as and then we come up against a top team and don’t have the bottle
Kane rice and Bellingham have been absolutely shocking
"No playing darts!!!!!!" This channel is pure parody
We need an arsehole. We need a JT. We need a Lampard. None of these players have performed for England. This is just a bunch of idiots ranting.
They are playing darts with the same journos that will slaughter them when they come home in the R16 lol
Hugh Wizzy back desperately from the rock he crawled under when he thought he was too big for the kick-off. 🤣🤣🤣
What are you on about 😂 and besides kick off isn't what it used to be. And wizzy been on the club a few times now 🤣
Kick off is a cesspool of biased and who can shout more content. Deluded bashing of clubs with no substance.
Liverpool been struggling to utilise a number 6 for the past season, but they expect trent to fill the role for england? Use him in the RB position and let walker come on late and kill the opposition with his pace
He should have gone after the final with Italy.
Guehi has been one of our best players - not ready😂😂😂😂
The Belgium disrespect gonna bite them in the ass.
Ahhh Hugh Wizzy has finally returned
England arent good enough.
We cant judge any player when the system they play in is poor
The disrespect to Cole Palmer in this chat
Mkola speaking facts and thats hard to say being a liverpool fan lol
He made a big call favouring Gordon to Grealish, presumably because of his pressing stats. He hasn't played him for a minute and his side is also not playing with a ton of pressure up top as a whole anyway, so why bother. I'd much rather have had Grealish on for what he contributes offensively.
Just one example.
They need to get that killer instinct and Gareth needs to stop looking worried on the sideline
