  • The youth will always be the cutting edge. As you age, you have two options - remain edgy with them, and keep your spirit intact, or view the next generation as problematic for not adhering to your current standards (forgetting that YOU didn't adhere to them when YOU were young), and become just another stuffy, preachy adult.

Our parents generation really fucked us all up by not instilling in us a better sense of responsibility and urgency that life requires. I kept being told "you're still young. You have time." When I was 30 my mom told me I shouldn't worry about having kids because SHE wasn't ready to be a grandmother. I wasn't in a position to at the time anyway but it was a very asinine thing to tell her 30 yr old daughter. Now I'm even older and just figuring out how much damage the child worship/self esteem movement and the continuation of feminism did to me and our generation. Even if we realize it now, the damage has been done. There is no going back and fixing it and so the next couple generations are going to be weaker for it as well because we're not going to be a strong foundation for them to build on.

As an older Millenial who doesn't care much for social media, I miss the days of ppl trying to live as a community with ppl you may or may not like. The internet creates huge communities of like-minded people and you have so many weirdos right now under this delusion that the community they are in should be real life to the point that they are willing to be tyrants about it.
I feel like a bunch of this would be solved if we took away the "like" buttons (much like dislike buttons are now hidden). That way, people are unsure whether their opinions are good or bad and would be forced to reevaluate it through discussion.

My friend group in the late 80's and 90's covered the spectrum of ideology, religion and worldviews, but it was centered on music, hobbies and interests. Baby Boomers: "God, Millennials are horrible. They weren't raised right."
      "And who raised them?"
      "..."
As a Zoomer, I unironically sometimes hate Millennials too, but I'm even more mad at Baby Boomers for screwing it up so bad. The Greatest Generation and the Silent Generation handed it to them on a silver platter, gave them a knife, and said your only job is to carve it up yourself and eat well. The Boomers went "Man, eating all this food handed to me for practically nothing is hard work, but I'm still kinda hungry." And then they proceeded to butcher the goose that lays the golden eggs. They told Millennials that hard work was all you needed to succeed, and that you deserve success if you work hard (A lie that many older generations would readily prove as such with all their hard work they had nothing to show for) and so when Millennials went out into an America no longer in its greatest period of economic expansion thanks in no small part due to the self-serving policies of the Boomers that bought today's amenities on tomorrow's dime, instead of saying "Damn, my pops lied to me. It's not get an education, get a job, simple easy life. Better get working at it." they instead said "Hey, this is bullshit. I deserve better. I deserve more. It's because of all the "isms" of the world, and not because I thought I could do whatever I want and still get paid."
In the middle of it all is of course Gen X, raised by the Silent Generation who themselves had very rough childhoods and very successful adulthoods. Gen X didn't have it as easy as the Boomers, had it easier than Millennials, and were far better prepared for it all than Millennials, turned out pretty alright and mostly understand Millennial struggles because they did it too, just not quite as bad. This is the generation raising Gen Z, and if it weren't for the Internet, my generation would be turning out quite alright. My world right before social media went mainstream was one of the lowest racism, sexism, and all the other "isms", highest general prosperity even if it wasn't evenly distributed, and best education because information now flowed much more freely and we understood things in far greater depth than just 50 years prior. Social media upended a lot of that progress though because it's hijacked our minds. I can see it within Zoomers. Older Zoomers are doing way better than younger ones, because us older ones didn't get unrestricted Internet until middle school and instead were either outdoors with friends or playing our older cousin's N64 handed down to us or the Wii we just got with our siblings and the neighbor kids. We kinda got the best of all worlds. The lack of entitlement passed down by Gen X (2008 instilled it in us young), the free flow of information and fun of the digital age, a childhood without phones or social media, and the shadow of 1990s liberalism making us far more internally tolerant down in our heart of hearts. Well, at least, that was true until we grew up and had our minds corrupted by social media. Now most of that isn't even remotely true. But some of us have retained our initial upbringing and are doing great.

They were against the establishment and the status quo. That's not what were seeing now adays. So, there were no gaming systems, although my parents did do their best to buy our first computer. But, I can't say I was stunted by the lack of those sort of things. I would say my childhood was similar to that of a child who grew up in the 60s and 70s, if based on the toys I played with. I had all sorts of plastic army men and cowboys and indians (I'm sure those will be removed from shelves soon.) A red wagon, a sand pail and shovel. I watched Gumby and Pokey. Many of the toys were bought at garage sales or resale shops. My father who was born on a farm in rural Arkansas two years before the October crash and my mother raised on a farm in rural Michigan during the 40s and 50s by her maternal grandmother taught me a lot. A lot of stories about experiences that the parents of my peers could not equal. I was raised on home cooked meals and home grown vegetables from our garden and ate a lot of wild game that my father hunted or trapped. No TV dinners. My parents preserved and canned foods, like pickles, jams and jellies. I got a lot of clothes for Christmas. I would say my parents were old school in terms in discipline. If you got into mischief, it was far better for mother to handle it than father. lol

Not sure that's true anymore, at least on many things. I'm pushing 50, and I feel bad for kids today growing up having to worry about their online persona following them throughout their lives. I feel bad they have little to no privacy, can be tracked, traced, and monitored 24/7. I think the years of being able to disappear for hours at a time to get into shit and experiment with life are important and missing for them. Overall there just seems like there's way too much at risk for them to push boundaries and experiment with ideas and actions, my only hope being that since they're all in that position they backtrack a lot on the current culture and don't ruin each other over childhood indiscretions.
I feel bad for young adults struggling to afford rent, most not even having a choice but to live with at least one if not multiple roommates for an unreasonable amount of time. Not that anything was ever certain, but the lack of options for a secure future has to be damaging. In the 90's there was what was seen as a safe path to take to get by even if it meant never excelling. If you took a risk on your career those options were always there to fall back on. Now nothing feels like a safe bet. I get the worry and insecurity.

I think, for me personally, a lot of it comes down to always being told "You're gonna do great things," "You're gonna change the world," and things like that. It wasn't even my parents that said that, it was my schools; my classes were taught throughout my education that we were gonna be the generation to really *change things,* to make the world better. Along with a lot of "chosen one" and "heroic journey" style literature focused around kids to young adolescence, I can see that having the effect of "I'm not an adult yet, I haven't changed the world."
I think it also adds to all these millenials running around doing their damndest to affect some sort of great change. After all, if we got old without having our own woodstock or something, like the Antifapolis "summer of love" thing, then we let down everyone who thought we were gonna really be something, and all that leaves us with is how we "killed everything."

I have been alive since 1984 and the biggest changes I have seen is one, the internet itself with personal computers and two the isolation of society with social media. Never have there been two more opposed technological revolutions so close to one another in human history. The personal computer and the internet brought great freedom and exposure to new ideas. It really felt like a new enlightenment era and being in high school around the late 90's when it was all going down was an amazing time to be a teenager. Then came the social media in the late 2000's.
With the advent of social media and smart phones the vast expansive new world of the internet was shrunk down to just the individual. After 2007, everything about the internet became about the individual and presenting the best qualities about that individual despite the facts of reality. Reality became sanitized of all uglyness and everyone started to live in their own sheltered bubbles that they created with their online persona. New ideas were no longer treated with intrigue but as attacks on the individuals perception of reality. As such, the individual retreated into an even smaller world than what existed before the internet. We have witnessed such an expansion and contraction in individual consciousness in the span of three decades that it is what most would call biblical.
This is entirely why the mid 90's to mid 2000's is treated with so much reverence. It was truly an age of enlightenment and through selfish desire and corporate greed we threw it all away and demanded it be taken away to defend our plastic persona's.

I recently watched some of my favorite shows from the 90s (Full House, Star Trek: TNG, Roseanne, Hey Dude, et al.) and I was quite surprised at how overtly the programs were showing "progressive" or liberal ideology. Almost every show featured a male character dressed and acting like a woman. The racial component and making white people feel guilty was featured in most, as well (although the push for miscegenation wasn't so apparent, yet). Bullying was covered thoroughly and man o man was "multiculturalism" a hot topic back then. Now we are seeing the reality of that programming.

One thing I think people forget is how much technological progress has changed the way generations relate to one another. For most of human history, progress was slow, and most skills you learned from your elders. But now, younger generations always have an edge on their parents when it comes to learning how to use the latest technology. This makes it easier for the young to look down on the old instead of respecting them.

The thing is : if every generation needs to go further into violence and amorality in order to be edgy, where does it end? Is there a point where it starts to hurt society or even the individuals on a psychological level?
The example of violence in video games is kind of nice to illustrate this point : some artists who worked on Mortal Kombat suffered symptoms close to PTSD due to working on modeling gore with such excruciating detail all day. And this never happened (and couldn't possibly have ever happened) with blood being represented by a few red cubes on the NES. So even though the problem appears to be "repeating", it keeps getting different, and usually more extreme, with every iteration.
I don't pretend to have the answer, and the very fact i asked this question probably means I am getting old too. But it truly believe it is a legitimate inquiry. Brushing the process aside by saying "it's just the past repeating" or "new generations always provoke the previous one and we shouldn't draw a line" is potentially dangerous, I think.

8:02 “Bob.” I just love the subtle exasperation in SFO’s voice. It literally sounds like he puts his head in his hands for a second there. It’s 1:00 am as I am writing this so I didn’t laugh, but I did smile at that. SFO, I feel your pain, man.

I'm only 21, but... there's a certain bit of getting older that I'm already feeling myself, and maybe that's just how fast our world and culture move. Still, in a way it's reassuring. I may not like the way things are going, from politics to the media to our culture to our cars (fucking boring-ass SUVs and Crossovers everywhere)... but the fact that I'm still here another year, and that each passing year is one where I've lived and learned... it's kind of heartening to watch myself get stronger and wiser about the world.
Granted, it does also feel a bit panicky, because I still have no clue what I want to be, no romantic relations, and I've only just started my first job week before last... but I've still got a long ways to go yet still.

No. You're fine as a 00's kid. Nostalgia is a silly sink hole. Every decade has and always will sucked to some capacity. What is cool as time goes forward is you not only can you get awesome stuff from the past, you can get awesome stuff from the present.
